ello and welcome to the new look School News.

If this is the first time you’ve picked up School News you’ll see that it’s full of stories from your local schools as well as useful and interesting articles for parents. School News is the brainchild of Claire and John Turner who have five children and a background in advertising and education.

Pupils and parents noticed that cars often try to park on the corner double yellow lines at the worst possible time when pupils are entering and leaving the school. This is especially bad when pupils are late for school! The children came up with the great idea of four Year 6 children standing on each corner with a bright yellow sign. The sign reads, ‘Please do not park here. It is very dangerous for all my friends.’

Headteacher John Letts said, ‘The response has been fantastic. Cars no longer try to drop off or park on the double yellow lines when the children are there.

Our pupils are very concerned about road safety and the children themselves have come up with the solution. I am very proud of them.’

Ursuline College started the new academic year in great style by winning the prestigious INSPIRE Award for outstanding services to schools across East Kent; we are a national model of best practice.

Over the Summer holidays Sixth Form students have been fortunate to undertake challenging service projects in India and USA. The students are looking forward to applying for the scholarships that will be created throughout our international Ursuline links enabling them to attend university in America and Republic of China. Westgate students in their turn have raised £1200 to send to Ursuline Water Charities in Ethiopia, this ensures money goes directly where it is required to assist the poor and marginalised.

Mr Goodall, teacher of Year 7 who organised the event, commented: “We had hoped to give the students a chance to meet the new friends they’ll be learning with over the next five years at The Marlowe, challenge them with a variety of activities and give them a chance to shine. The students had the opportunity to try a variety of activities and experiences; building bivouacs, exploring their surroundings, enjoying a barbecue, constructing and eating an edible campfire, competing at football, rounders and The Doughnut Challenge!”

During their stay students collaborated as a year but also competed in their four house teams; Apollo, Voted Britain’s Friendliest Business 2014 Saturn, Minerva, and Veritas for the first ever Kearsney Abbey Camp Cup. Minerva House took an early lead with their beautifully domed bivouac, but the scores soon levelled and continued to be close right up to Friday afternoon, when a particularly stealthy group of students weaved their way through the forest to secure the cup for the radiant Apollo House!

INSPIRATIONAL OLYMPIC STAR LIZZY

COMMITMENT AT UPTON

Olympian Lizzy Yarnold MBE gave pupils an insight into her life as an athlete when she visited Cliftonville primary school.

Lizzy, 25, who was appointed an MBE for her services to sport in the 2014 Birthday Honours, is determined to improve on the 90mph speed she set on her Skeleton board to take gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. She explained how her protective headgear gets damaged where her chin is just centimetres from the ground at incredible speeds. Using a sports bench to simulate her sled, she demonstrated her race position and gave pupils and staff the chance to try it out wearing her race helmet.

She told pupils, “Skeleton is a crazy and mad sport but I love it. It is like plunging down a water flume at top speeds only on ice; so very close to the ground.

“I am a bit of an adrenalin junkie so going fast is perfect for me. I do get nervous and a little scared but I always know that I want to give it a go and I am determined to do my very best.”

Lizzy was very keen on sport as a teenager at school in Maidstone, and was introduced to Skeleton Racing in 2008 through UK Sport’s Girls4Gold talent search.

She began competing in 2010 and won her first race in the Europa Cup, in November 2010.

She was 9th in 2011/12 season and became Junior World Champion and a bronze medallist in the senior World Championships in 2012.

The visit was organised through the Inspire Kent programme which aims to maintain the legacy of the London Olympics in 2012 and engage young people in a range of activities including sports.

Upton Junior School in Broadstairs collected the award for the Thanet School showing exceptional commitment to the values of the Kent School Games (KSG) at the Annual Cultural Celebration in Tunbridge Wells. The event, attended by celebrities such as Craig Revel Horwood, from BBC’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, recognised one winning school from each region across Kent. Eight Upton pupils attended the Celebration, which featured the winners of the KSG music and drama auditions performing to a packed audience.

For the second year running, King Ethelbert School are celebrating extraordinary GCSE results. 62% of their Year 11 students gained five GCSEs at C grade or above including Maths and English (74% of students gained a C or above in English and 67% of students gained a C or above in maths). Last year, the school was the most improved in Kent and the best non selective in Thanet on 54%.

STUDENTS MAKE THE A GRADE

96% of students gained at least five GCSE passes at grades A*- C at Dane Court Grammar School this year. Among their outstanding students, Sarah Jones scored 12A* grades and one A , Amy Napier and Alice Rawson both gained 10A* grades and at least two further A grades; Suzanne Fletcher and Esme Votta both gained 9A* and 4A grades. Top-scoring boys were James Howard with 9A* and 5A grades; Matthew Hancox, Daniel Van Hinsbergh and Alex Payne each gained 7A* and 6A grades.

Science results were especially impressive, with 85% of students gaining A* and A grades in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. These excellent results mean that the large majority of students have secured the grades they need to progress to high-achieving sixth-form International Baccalaureate courses at Dane Court.

Head of School Andrew Fowler said, “These superb results reflect the hard work of the students and the wonderful support they have received from their teachers and parents.”

Sarah Snaydon, Assistant Head, said, “I am delighted with the success of our Year 11 students. They have worked very hard for these excellent grades, with a very significant number gaining four levels of progress. A number of students have overcome great personal hardship, and I am very proud of their success.”

Chair of Governors Dr V Austin commented, “As always, Governors are intensely proud of the achievements of students and staff at Dane Court.”

Students and staff at Hartsdown Academy in Margate are celebrating another successful year of A Level results.

Top students included Yasmine Si Mohammed, 18, who gained three A grades; Dmytro Lysak, 18, who gained three A levels including an A pass in Engineering; Tyler Davis, who gained a B and D pass A level equivalent in his Thanet Football Academy course; Harry Arnold who celebrated three A levels in Engineering, Finance and IT; Rebecca Scargill and Hannah Messenger who both achieved two A Levels including an A in Travel and Tourism each; and Emma-Jayne Chadwick, who was one of Margate’s torch-bearers in the 2012 Olympics, who passed 4 A Levels.

Tyler, 18, who gained a distinction, is planning a sports apprenticeship. He said: “The football academy course was perfect as it mixed practical techniques and learning. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who wants to take their sports to a higher level.”

Maddie Lilley, 17, from Year 12 gained a distinction in her Childcare studies and is taking Health and Social Care in Year 13 from September at Thanet Skills Studio.

Darcy Reynolds who gained an overall A in Performing Arts is taking up a place at Stratford University in London to study dance. She said: “That is all I have ever wanted to do and now I can’t wait to start at uni.”

The Ellington and Hereson School are celebrating another good set of GCSE results. Over 50% of students gained a C grade in English or Maths with 64% of students achieving 5A*-C grades at GCSE or equivalent while 89% of students gained passes in 5 or more subjects. Amongst the most notable results were: Keira Debling who gained 11 A* - C grades with 7A and A* passes, Stephanie Williamson who was awarded 12 A* - C passes with 6 A and Heather Jeffryes who achieved 9 A*-C grades. Headteacher, Simon Pullen was pleased with the results and said, “I want to congratulate all of Year 11 and also thank the teachers for the commitment they have shown in supporting our students during their GCSE exams. ”

St Lawrence College pupils are celebrating a significant jump in top grades at GCSE, with the overall A* and A grades increasing to 41%, a leap of over 10% compared to last year. In total, 15 pupils gained at least eight A*/A grades, with top performers Rudy Hagemichael and Ben Spencer each gaining ten A* grades.

Principal Antony Spencer commented; “Our top 25% academically attained a remarkable 88% A*/A grades, which they have achieved whilst being busy with many co-curricular opportunities including music, sport and drama, all of which play a part in preparing them for future success in life.”

Pupils also celebrated another bumper set of exam results at A Level, leading to many pupils looking forward to studying at the University of their choice.

Amongst the successes were Anna Harvey who got A*AA grades and will study Medicine at King’s College London.

Stuart Harrison who obtained A*A*A and an Advanced Extension Award in Maths and will study the subject at Sussex.

Jack Greenslade who will study Music at Manchester with grades of A*AA. Demi Oluwole who will go to Sussex University to study Medicine with grades of A*AA. Former Head Boy, Courtney Horey, who has a place at Exeter to study Law after gaining AAA grades.

have gone back to the frantic rush of lunch boxes, notes, book bags, and oversleeping teens. The new uniforms look a bit worn in (or slept in, in some cases - regardless of stain removers and starch), but the one true horror of Back To School is the dreaded word that gets whispered in the school staff rooms across the country, the one word that makes everyone start to feel itchy, the one word that has us all looking sideways at a passing child’s head - NITS. ‘Dear Parents, Unfortunately there has been an outbreak of nits in your child’s class, please check their hair for signs of infestation and treat accordingly.’

Infestation?! Even writing this piece I can’t stop scratching at non-existent creepy-crawlies. I know we’re coming up to Bonfire Night and Trick or Treating and it’s cool to have spiders and bats hanging up, but not lice!

Okay, so what should you look for?

Finally, how do you stop them returning?

Well, the adult lice are tiny insects about the size of a sesame seed, and be careful because although they don’t jump or fly they will climb onto someone’s head if flicked during combing. Generally the way they spread is by head to head contact - just the sort of thing that happens during group work at school, or playing games, or taking selfies - in fact all the things that children and teenagers do on a daily basis.

Great. So that’s the adults, but what about the eggs - the nits? They’re cemented to a hair and look like a tiny grain of rice, and sometimes they’re stubborn and almost armour plated - this is a battle! The problem is that the enemy here, the louse, can lay five to ten eggs EVERY DAY. The eggs take seven to eleven days to hatch, and then the louse takes nine to twelve days to mature. Once mature they find themselves a mate, and then start laying those eggs every day. And guess what - despite the blurb on the boxes of head lice treatment - it doesn’t get rid of all the eggs.

Again there are various options; you can simply have very short hair, boys tend to suffer less with head lice simply because they often have short hair, so that’s one way to go. For those with longer hair the best way forward is to keep it tied up so there’s less opportunity for passing lice to hitch a ride.You may want to keep applying teatree lotion regularly, but certainly you’ll need to keep combing regardless what you put onto the hair, or not.

Sometimes they ‘re stubborn and almost armour plated - this is a battle!

If you haven’t yet bought one, get a nit comb; add it to your shopping list along with the grass stain remover and that family sized bar of chocolate that you keep hidden for ‘emergencies’….emergencies like an outbreak of nits. That’s the last and best remedy - but for parents only - one bar of family sized chocolate eaten in peace without children present, it cures most ills.

So, secondly, what are your options to get rid of these unwanted visitors?

You can take the non-pesticide route and keep combing with a special nit comb every couple of days when the hair is wet. Don’t forget dry combing can end up spreading the lice. Some people recommend using normal hair conditioner, some prefer to use tea-tree oil, or one of the various over-the-counter remedies available from the pharmacy. Experts seem to have differing opinions on which one is best and by experts I mean parents as well as scientists.

The one thing they’re all agreed on is the combing, just make sure you do it every couple of days and dunk the comb into hot water between each sweep - you’ll also be able to see if you’ve caught any unwanted visitors.

I

t’s astonishing how many scary things you hear about when you have children: the news is filled with car crashes, predatory celebrities and nasty bugs that are flying in through an airport near you.

We feel worried about how much or how little time we share with our children, about them eating their five-a-day and drinking enough fluid to power their brain and all the time it feels like there is just another article or playground conversation waiting to add yet another scary thing to the list of things to be concerned about.

I am not here to worry you. I don’t think worry helps us in this life. Worry saps energy and takes our attention. Worry doesn’t actively make you do anything.

I want to offer you some information that is very simple, very clear and not to worry about. It’s just something to know. And if by knowing it you act quickly if you see it happening, it will quite certainly save your child’s life.

I want you to think about the 4 Ts: Toilet, Thirsty, Tired, Thinner.

19 Insulin opens the cells carrying glucose in the blood and takes the energy to the bits of the body that need it, like your brain and your muscles. Without Insulin this glucose gets stuck in the blood cells and cannot be released.Your body thinks it’s starved of energy and you even feel hungry, but actually every time you eat the glucose in your blood will increase but not get to your cells.

This is terribly dangerous because without energy our bodies will begin to consume themselves rather than starve.You get thinner and more tired and quite quickly you get to Diabetic Ketoacidosis: a state where you are more acidic inside than you should be and your organs will begin to shut down until you go in to a coma and die.

Tom didn’t die. He was lucky and he recovered.

I know how terrible it feels to have your child nearly die of Type 1 Diabetes because you worry but don’t know what to do. I also know what it is like to have your child diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when you know what to do… because we have been through it twice.

When Joe began to wet the bed after many years of being dry an alarm bell rang. When he also got thirsty I got the blood glucose testing kit we already had at home for Tom and I tested him. He was measuring very high for blood glucose and I knew he had Type 1. He was diagnosed quickly and never felt that unwell. He wanted a red injection pen to take his Insulin and we went away for the weekend as we had already planned.

When I worried and didn’t know what to do, my baby went in to a coma. When I knew what signs to be alarmed by, I went to my GP and my sons went camping.

The Meningitis Campaign where you are warned to look out for a headache and a rash, and you press a glass on the rash and if it stays you call 999 was so successful and is still remembered now. Type 1 Diabetes is 5 times more likely than Meningitis; we need to know the 4 Ts, so we can stop worrying and simply know what to look out for.

Children don’t die because their parents don’t worry. But children do die if their parents don’t know.

Any football lover in Thanet can’t have failed

to notice the huge turnaround in the fortunes of Margate FC - since the beginning of the season their record is astounding - leaving them currently riding at second in the Ryman League Premier Division.

I got the chance to speak to the new owner and Chairman, Bob Laslett. A local man who grew up just outside of Sandwich, but had his love of football ignited by his aunt, “Auntie Alice lived in Burlington Gardens, she was a fanatical Margate Football Club supporter.” While Bob’s farmer father went to play Crown Green Bowls in Margate, Bob and his brother went with Auntie Alice to home games at Hartsdown Park. A keen footballer from primary school, Bob got to know the local football superstar of the time - Peter Broadbent (who was born in Elvington, and played in the 1958 World Cup) who went onto play for Wolverhampton Wanderers, and led to Bob’s long connection to Wolves.

“Although I went to school locally, when I left home to go to London for an Engineering apprenticeship, I never really came back. I travelled the world and started my own company in the oil industry. The links to Wolves grew more because they were a big club and I eventually became a main sponsor of theirs, my company’s shirts took them up to the Premier League last time. I became a director. I ended up living in Monaco for ten years. I recently came back to this area because of my family links, back to our roots.”

Which brings us back to Margate FC. Bob explains, “The people who kept Margate Football Club going did a good job literally keeping the club alive. I’ve been able to come in and help to sort things out; improve the match day experience for the fans, and most importantly getting a new manager, assistant manager, and spending a lot of money on recruiting a good quality team that could hopefully this year take

us to promotion. That’s our one aim - promotion and developing the club. My wife says I’m an enthusiastic workaholic. This is 110% for me, night and day.”

Bob’s plan is to engage with the local community, build up the club and foster local talent. “What we want is a team out here that’s playing in the league.

Then we’ll have to build a massive stadium. I’ve just embarked upon the creation of a new company - Margate Football Community Trust Ltd. We’ve already got a really good well run youth section - 300 children in teams from age 6 to 17 and it’s coming into the new organisation. Our academy has started with about 30 students. What’s the benefit to Margate Football Club? We will have engagement with the community - parents, children, schools. We want to see them come through and play in our first team; we need our own talent here.”

You will need: • 28 Digestive type biscuits • 28 white marshmallows • A cup raspberry jam • 375 g chocolate • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil Step 1 Preheat the oven to 160°C. Place half the biscuits upside down on a baking tray. Cut each marshmallow in half, then press four halves onto each biscuit. Bake for two minutes, or until the marshmallow is soft and slightly melted. Remove from the oven and set aside for one minute.

Remove marshmallows from child’s hair, walls, dog, and baby. Eat leftover marshmallows.

Step 2 Spread the jam over the base of the remaining biscuits. Sandwich together each jam biscuit with a marshmallow biscuit, squeezing gently to ensure they stick. Allow to set for 15 minutes, or until the marshmallow has completely cooled. Put on high shelf to stop child and adults in the house from eating them. Remove jam from child’s hair, walls, dog, and baby. Eat one marshmallow jam biscuit secretly in loo as reward.

Step 3 Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of just-simmering water. Watch it carefully, stirring frequently, to ensure it doesn’t burn. Once melted, stir through the oil. This may need to be done twice as the telephone rang during the first melting and burnt the chocolate.

Wipe down chocolate smeared child, dog, baby, walls, and self.

Step 4 Line up your biscuits, chocolate and a baking tray lined with baking paper. Using two forks, dip each biscuit into the chocolate, ensuring it is completely covered. Place the biscuit on the baking sheet to set, then either use a metal spatula to smooth the tops or leave them as are. Allow the biscuits to set completely. Give one biscuit each to adults and children in the house. Do not give any to the dog (chocolate is poisonous to pets). Put remaining biscuits in secret hiding place for ‘emergencies’.

I

was bullied when I was at school.Yeah, I know – a fat, nerdy, undiagnosed-autistic kid getting picked on. Unbelievable! But I’ve forgiven my primary school. When I think back to those times, I think of writing stories in sparkly gel pen, making “bird nests” on the field, rolling down the hill and getting grass stains on my skirt, summer fêtes, and hiding indoors when everybody else went outside so I could have fun, reading. I forgave them long ago.

My secondary school? That’s a different story. They let a girl harass me for a year before putting us in separate groups. They stood by as I nearly had a nervous breakdown over people groping me for their own amusement. They never did anything about strangers calling me names. And instead of kicking out the boy in my IT class who kept stealing my bag and upsetting me, they took me out. To me, they were at fault just as much as the people picking on me. I’ve been thinking about things recently, and I’m starting to look at my time at school differently. I was a bit paranoid as a teenager. I became convinced by the end of my time at secondary school that almost everybody in my year hated me. But on the last day, how many people in the year signed my shirt and yearbook saying they’d miss me?

Almost everyone.

Could it be that my own insecurity and undiagnosed disability were causing a lot of my pain? Possibly. I put the effort in to imagine what it must have been like for my school. When I started getting bullied at secondary school, I did what any kid should do when they’re being picked on: I told an adult. Then, when that didn’t help, I just stopped talking. I decided that adults were useless and I had to deal with things on my own. But who says they knew what was going on?

When I get very emotional, my brain stops working properly and I end up with holes in my memory where I can recall what I felt, but not what actually

happened. So can I guarantee that I communicated what I needed to my teachers? No. After all, it wasn’t until my father – a neurotypical – had sharp words with the head-teacher that anything happened with the girl in Year Eight. Was it because he had more sway, or because they understood him better than me? There’s no way to know for sure.

But maybe they were just as frustrated as I was.

Maybe there was just too much of a communication barrier for them to help me. I don’t know. But I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt.

I will forgive them.
