East Kent College is delighted to announce that their HE provision was judged as ‘Meeting UK Expectation’, the second highest grade achievable.

Following their routine Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education (HE) Review in April 2014, East Kent College is delighted to announce that their HE provision was judged as ‘Meeting UK Expectation’, the second highest grade achievable. The QAA review is the equivalent of an Ofsted inspection for Higher Education providers. A team of QAA reviewers visited East Kent College and undertook an appraisal of the College’s academic standards, the quality and enhancement of student learning opportunities, and the quality of information available to learners. The Team judged our provision as ‘Meeting UK Expectation’ – which is only second to ‘Exceeding UK Expectation’ in the grading system.

Dr.Andrew Gower , Vice Principal of East Kent College and Lead Facilitator for Higher Education provision, was exceedingly pleased with the outcome and said, ‘The key findings of the Quality Assurance Agency's Higher Education Review rightly recognise the quality of learning opportunities provided by the College for its Higher Education students. The Review gives confidence in encouraging progression to the highest possible levels of learning at East Kent College.’ The review team commended the College for their 'rigorous, robust and self-critical' approach to monitoring the quality of higher education programmes on offer. It also highlighted areas of good practice which included our committed approach to developing our students’ academic, personal and professional potential from further to higher education and onwards. This successful review will mean that East Kent College can display the QAA Quality Mark, indicating to UK and international students that the University/College meets national requirements for standards and quality.

Hartsdown Academy: Kurdish Thanks to dedicated Young Fundraisers

The work of young fundraisers to help build a school for refugee children has been honoured by the Kurdistan Regional Government at a reception at the Palace of Westminster.

The students from Hartsdown Academy have held a series of events as part of their Project 4000 appeal to raise £4,000 towards the cost of the school at the Domiz refugee camp for Syrian refugees in the Kurdistan region.

These include a comedy night, non-uniform days, a radio performathon on the college’s Seaside Radio, cake sales and contacting local businesses and organisations for support.

A charity soccer match was also held between staff and students at Margate FC’s Hartsdown Park stadium, with Hiwa Jwanroyi, Director of Education and Cultural Affairs for the Kurdistan Regional Government in the UK, playing for the staff side. The reception was for Ms Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the KRG High Representative to the UK, hosted by MP Nadhim Zahawi.

‘ The students, accompanied by Hartsdown staff, were thanked for their tremendous fund raising programme that is ongoing. They also met Kurdish Archbishop Athanasius Toma Dawod at the reception held on the terrace, and visited both the House of Commons and House of Lords during their trip.

Executive head teacher Andy Somers, who visited the Domiz camp in April 2013 to help set up the school project, said: “We are extremely proud of everything our students and staff are doing to help support education and life opportunities for the refugee children.

“They were perfect ambassadors during the reception, which was a great experience for them.”

Hartsdown Academy had the chance to get up close to a variety of creatures when Zoo Lab held a series of workshops.

The lives of a corn snake, rats, tarantula spider, frog, tortoise, cockroach and giant snail were explored with Zoo Lab’s handler and educator Emma Lismer.

She explained about their diverse habitats, feeding requirements, reproduction and welfare, in the fun sessions that also promoted environmental awareness.

Emma said: “This is a safe and informative way for students to really engage with different species.

Kent Cooks A passion for cooking: Developing a passion for healthy meal

options and local produce is the aim of the county's official school cooking competition, KM Kent Cooks.

The annual competition has its climax at the end of the year when a Masterchef-style event is staged. A panel of food industry experts have the tough task of naming the best Kent Cook in primary, secondary and family categories.

The aim is to develop the confidence and abilities of young people to prepare meals to a fixed budget, as well as to increase awareness of healthy options and locally grown Kentish produce.

To enter, students prepare a dish they have created, which they think is delicious, healthy and showcases their cooking skills. Every entrant has their recipe turned into an online recipe page.

Nancy Clark from Kent Cooks said: "The event has changed dramatically in recent years with the introduction of categories for primary schools and families. It is really exciting to see the parent and child teams working together to create a special dish. GCSE catering and food tech students have to cook two dishes for their coursework and so our secondary school category matches this. We recommend these students enter the dishes they plan to cook for their exam."

Although the world famous aerial display team may not use Manston air base again, their legacy in the area is being commemorated by youngsters at nearby Newington Community Primary School.

They have named their new go karts the Red Arrows after the dare-devil flyers that could be seen flying in the skies above the school on their ways to and from the airfield.

The squadron of pedal-karts bought by the school is a sky-high hit with pupils of all ages who queue up to ride them around a circuit in the school grounds every lunchtime.

The drivers – or pilots – undergo a driving test to before qualifying to be able to use the karts and receive t h e i r driver’s licence.

One of the most common problems, said the researchers, was the time that had elapsed between studying maths at school and starting their degrees. “Many students arrive at university with unrealistic expectations of the mathematical and statistical demands of their subject,” the report says.

Tens of thousands of students are struggling to cope with the amount of maths needed in a range of subjects at university because they do not leave school with sufficient skills, a report has found.

This year 88% of families got a place at their first choice primary school and 85% were offered one at their first choice secondary. Official statistics published today (24 June 2014) by the Department for Education show that 546,000 (88%) families in England received a place at their first choice of primary school this year, while at secondary level over 444,000 (85%) were offered a place at their first choice school.

A Department for Education spokesperson said: “Ensuring enough school places for the growing population is one of our top priorities. That is why we have more than doubled to £5 billion the funding available to councils to create new school places, and are allowing good schools to expand without the restrictions and bureaucracy they faced in the past.

This has already led to the creation of 260,000 new school places across the country. Thanks to our reforms, the number of children in failing secondary schools has already fallen by a quarter of a million since 2010. Overall there were more than 623,000 applications for primary school places and over 521,000 for secondary places. Almost 96% of families received a place at 1 of their top 3 preferred primary or secondary schools this year”. Digital Leaders at Dane Court Grammar School: The Digital Leaders at

Dane Court Grammar School held their first Technology Day last week showcasing the new Chromebooks, iPads and apps that are in daily use in lessons. The Digital Leaders' role is to support staff and fellow students and they are leading the way with Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) so that everyone feels comfortable with using their phones or tablets to enrich their learning. The stalls included advice on the top 10 must-have free apps, introductions to Evernote and Google Drive with 'getting started' leaflets as well as hands-on sessions with equipment.

To make the event even more interactive, there was a QR Treasure Trail Prize Draw with codes on every stall revealing a message that could win them a gift voucher donated by IT Services at Dane Court

The event was well attended and everyone was able to ask questions about equipment; get help with downloading the apps or how to print from their phones or tablets; International Baccalaureate students were given advice on how to use Google Docs to write their Extended Essays and staff were able to book 1-2-1 or group training sessions. All in all, it was a very useful event which inspired the students with new ways to use technology to enhance their learning journey.

Ryan Bowen (Year 9 student, 14 years old from Broadstairs), one of the Digital Leaders at Dane Court explained that the team aims to help train people to use apps, devices and a wide variety of software. ‘We try to help as many people as we can, mainly staff. There are lots of staff within the school who need training in the use of applications such as Google Drive, Evernote, Prezi, etc. The Digital Leaders are happy to help anyone with#in the school community, staff, students and even parents! We work closely with our IT Technicains here at Dane Court. The Digital Leaders have also helped with the introduction BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) campaign within school.

The aim here is to help staff and students learn how to integrate their own devices into their teaching and learning. We have been going at Dane Court for about 18 months now and we don't aim to stop any time soon! I hope this has given you a bit of an insight to what we do to help!’

With the launch of the Dreamland Expo (which saw over 5000 visitors attending in its first week), things are definitely hotting up in preparation for Dreamland's Phase One opening in 2015 - something that we are extremely excited about and hope that you are too!

My name is Donna Watford and I am pleased to have been recently recruited as the Learning and Community Officer for The Dreamland Trust who are responsible for the vision, preservation, heritage and learning of Dreamland. Margate is my hometown and it feels great to be back here after living and working in Brighton for many years. I am lucky enough to be working alongside a group of individuals that care passionately about Dreamland and the area. Everybody that I talk to is so enthusiastic about the place that I can’t wait to start exploring with learners what it is that makes Dreamland so important and special.

My role involves linking Dreamland’s heritage themes with the National Curriculum by consulting and working in partnership with schools, colleges and other learning providers –supporting a broad range of subject areas in a fun and informative way. I am responsible for setting up the learning department that will not only provide opportunities for those in formal education to engage with us, from primary age to post-16, but will encourage participation from community groups, adult learners and families alike - exciting events that open up Dreamland to all.

Dreamland’s unique and nationally significant history, international importance and place in the history of British seaside amusement park heritage is all there waiting to be explored!

Schools and colleges in the area have been consulted about our programme which is expanding over the next academic year.

Charles Dickens Festival was a total Thriller!

The normally gentrified country fair at Broadstairs Dickens Festival was shaken up with a real Thriller of a performance at the Victoria Gardens bandstand.

Michael Jackson’s ghoulish hit was performed in all its zombie-like glory by costumed performing arts students from Hartsdown Academy as part of their show to finish their set to a packed arena.

The sixth form team also staged a choreographed version of Madness’ lively hit Baggy Trouser, before Year 7,8 and 9 pupils presented extracts from their recent acclaimed version of the musical Bugsy Malone. There were also wellreceived solo spots for vocalists Josh Nicholls and Alanis Russell.

Pat Dunne who co-ordinates the school performances at the bandstand for Broadstairs Dickens Festival praised Hartsdown’s programme. She said:

“They promised us something different this year and we were treated to a lively and enthusiastic set. It was a good mix of fun and entertainment.”

The academy also performed at the venue on the final afternoon of the festival.

It is Hartsdown’s fourth year of invitation to be part of the festival and Executive Head Teacher Andy Somers said: “Broadstairs Dickens Festival is fantastic and Hartsdown is proud to play its part in an event that is central to Thanet’s heritage and culture.”

Seven St. George’s students attended the Duke of Edinburgh Presentation Evening at the Winter Gardens in Margate to receive their Bronze Awards. The evening involved entertainment from local schools and Mrs Helen Ralph Bmus (Hons) presentations were made by Mr Keith Rumblo helen4cello@btinternet.com who, as Principal of St. George’s, stated he was very proud to see the students looking so smart and pleased that there were so many of them present. All students were very well presented and made Mrs Bourlet, Mr Knight and Miss Galer (who attended this event) feel very proud. Knicker Raise - Madagascar Class in Dame Janet have teamed up with a school in Madagascar and after a visit from a teacher from the school devised and run a Knicker Raise campaign to help their peers in Africa.

After finding out how difficult it is for their Madagascan counterparts to access underwear, they decided to attempt to collect 1000 pairs of knickers/pants to send across. - year 6 children were introduced to the world of business when they met with local business leaders Fiona Crawford (Helter Skelter Managing Director) and Jim Gardner (Kent Union Chief Executive) for an hour long discussion on the highs and lows of managing a business. Pupils avidly took notes on how to use the Marketing mix, planning tools and tips for success before quizzing the experts on a set of questions they have pre-prepared. The session kick-started the annual business enterprise project which allows pupils to gain invaluable skills in planning, finance, teamwork, marketing and sales. Consequently and armed with their business expert insight, 18 teams pitched their business ideas to ‘the dragons den’ attempting to secure a £10 donation to set up their business. Ideas ranged from Loom Bands, to Smoothie Stalls and Fruit Kebabs and even a stall where pupils will be able to throw flour bombs and wet sponges at teachers for a fee. All money raised will be spent on the Year 6 prom which is their next business planning adventure!

ASDA, Thanet Leisure Force, Heart Fm, Kent Union, TKAT, Dame Janet and even our very own Thanet School News MD are swapping their work clothes for prison overalls before being locked up by Police Constable Scott Wilson from Margate Taskforce. The ‘inmates’ have agreed to go in to Dame Janet Primary Academy Jail to phone and email for pledges to help them raise £100,000 for the refurbishment of a disused building.

Two years ago, EarthCraftuk became Forest School trainers supporting their mission to bring professional Forest School to Kent & Medway.

To date, EarthCraftuk have trained (or currently in training) 85 adults for level 3 Forest School Practitioner/Programme Leader with the numbers on each training programme growing all the time as word spreads of the amazing emotional, psychological and physical benefits Forest School brings to everyone involved – including the adults!

Scott is an Advanced Bushcraft Instructor as well as Level 3 Forest School Practitioner and Trainer.

Clair is also a Level 3 Forest School Practitioner and Trainer, and has been involved with the National Forest School movement being a member of the Forest School Training Network GB and Clair is also voluntary Director and Trustee of The Forest School Association - The FSA is the professional body and dedicated voice for Forest School within the UK www.forestschoolassociation.org

Considering there was only just a handful of qualified Level 3 Forest School Practitioners in the county four years ago, it is wonderful to now see the number growing, with more and more participants benefiting as a result, and the ripple effect reaching far and wide across families and communities. Forest School is now firmly rooted in Kent & Medway and growing all the time!

Schools plant flowers in memory of World War One

Pupils from three local schools have been very busy planting out flowers in poppyshaped beds in Ellington Park. The red geraniums form part of the preparation for the World War One event taking place on Sunday 13th.July to mark the hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War.

With traditional events such as hurdles, javelin and skipping; coupled with more unique events such as the obstacle course and long jump relay (a personal favourite) there was a lot of sports to engage the children and spectators alike.

The children were in good spirits and extremely competitive, gave their all to each event, Max Williams (6 - pictured) of Minnis Bay class said “My team (Bleak 4) want to win, we’ve practiced and practiced and now we’re going to win”

The youngsters from Christ Church, Ellington Infants and Laleham Gap schools were invited by the Friends of Ellington Park to play their part in commemorating this centenary event.

Friends’ chairperson, Beverley Perkins,said, “It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm among the children as they got involved in this lovely creation.”

The annual event held in memory of local boy Alfie Gough who sadly lost his life to Cancer aged 2 has continued to live on in his memory keeping a real community spirit of fun and happiness in one of our great parks. Newington Community Primary School in Ramsgate is the first in Kent to be offering free school meals to all its pupils.

Children of all age groups will receive nutritious and balanced meals prepared by on-site kitchen staff every day from September when the new school year begins.

Head teacher Cliff Stokes explained: “Official research and evidence clearly shows that daily nutritious meals at lunchtime improves learning, putting pupils who receive these meals between six to eight weeks ahead in their studies in a school year over those who do not have these meals.

“For us that is excellent evidence and we are the first school in the county to offer free meals. We have quite a few families who are just above the threshold for receiving free meals for their children but who find it difficult to pay the £2.25 a day per child. Our scheme will cost around £20,000 but the benefits in improved learning and the knowledge that all our children will receive healthy school meals every day far outweighs the cost.”

Mr Stokes praised the “terrific work” of the school’s catering team that prepares and serves a varied menu of tasty food using locally sourced produce whenever possible. He added:” When our cook Ann Griffiths joined us seven years ago, her dream was for every boy and girl to benefit from a healthy school meal each day – from September her dream becomes a reality.”

SUPER 8s KWIK CRICKET FESTIVALS (Years 3-6) - 2014

This year’s Super 8s Kwik Cricket Festivals will be held at 2 venues, Margate CC and Broadstairs CC, on the following dates:  27th June (Margate) – 4.00 to 5.30pm  4th July (Broadstairs) – 4.00 to 5.30pm  11th July (Margate) – 4.00 to 5.30pm  18th July (Broadstairs) – 4.00 to 5.30pm

The format is the same as in previous years, i.e. all matches are 8-a-side friendlies with 2 matches per session. Children bat in pairs and every one faces an over and bowls an over (underarm bowling is permitted). Fixtures are decided on the day according to who turns up and whether or not they have played each other before. Schools are asked to bring one set of Kwik cricket equipment with them.

Schools may to choose which venue they wish to attend on some or all of the dates above.

On Monday 2 June, eight Dane Court students travelled by minibus up to the University of Kent for the Kent School Games training day.

This was the first time they have held a training day for the event.

The morning started with an inspirational talk by an Olympic athlete, Martyn Bernard. He competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His event was the high jump. We then spent the rest of the morning on working on where everything was situated and also how to make the Kent school games enjoyable and successful for everyone. This was achieved by three workshops. After lunch we united into new groups that we would be working in on the day of the Kent School Games. There was a wide range of activities for everyone to participate in and hopefully the volunteers can make it a successful day for everyone! On behalf of the Dane Court leaders who went, thank you to Mr Wallace for taking us!
