How is my FE exam graded and how will my results be published? The Fundamentals of Engineering exam is difficult. It is considered one of the hardest tests to take. The grading process is not as simple as receiving an ‘A’ or ‘B’ based on an essay you have written. It involves meeting pre-determined protocols to arrive at a reasonable, fair, and unbiased grade. Let’s take a look at the grading process. Exam Format The FE exam has 110 questions with a duration of 5 hours and 20 minutes with a 25-minute break in between. The FE exam is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) and is given at an authorized Pearson VUE center. Scoring Method The exam results are based on the number of correct answers selected by the individual. There is no negative scoring on the FE exams. The results from the test are compared to a preset list and then tabulated. Scaled Score The score calculated above is now converted into something called a ‘scaled score’ which is a quantitative method that represents the examinee’s competence level. This scaled score will compare your exam competence level with the calculated minimum competency level of all the examinees. The examinees' level of competence is based on analysis using a collection of data of metrics and measures. The calculation of minimal competency level through this analysis takes into account the difficulty across different exam forms, giving credits to erroneous questions, etc. Based on this, you are given a pass or fail grade on the exam. Result The exam does not have a specific number for a passing score. A letter grade or a numbered score will not be given. The result of the test will be pass or fail. Test results are published 7 to 10 days from the date of the exam in your MyNCEES account accompanied by email notification. On Passing The exam results will specify that you have passed or failed. If you have passed the exam, there will be instructions on how to proceed with your respective licensing board. On Failing If your exam results indicate that you have failed the exam, there will be a diagnostic report of your performance. The report will not divulge the questions that you missed or answered
