Better Together &

We learn to read, and then we read to learn. Helping every child become a proficient reader is critical to their future.
Helping children to love reading is a gift they will benefit from every day of their lives.
“ I have long been convinced that the central and most important goal of reading instruction is to foster a love of reading.” – Linda Gambrell *

ACCESS, CHOICE AND PRACTICE are the key elements to help children achieve reading success and become capable, confident readers.

How do you surround children with opportunities to become readers and constantly support their reading journey?

ANSWER — Partner with Scholastic to run Book Club and Book Fairs at your school.

The combination of Book Club and Book Fairs provides your families with the BEST possible ACCESS to books. They support a child's CHOICE in what they want to read and lead to the vital PRACTICE and volume of reading children need to obtain proficiency. They work together to support a reading culture in your school!

This year, give your students the best access to books by running both Book Club and Book Fairs. They will help cultivate a bookfilled atmosphere brimming with delightful stories and valuable information, which will encourage children to embrace reading as a pleasurable pastime.

A Scholastic Book Fair is a reading-focused event providing a hands-on discovery experience. A Book Fair empowers your students to explore and uncover the books that truly capture their interest, transforming reading into an exciting adventure.

*Creating Classroom Cultures that Foster Reading Motivation (1996)

Many budding readers embark on their literary journeys thanks to the ACCESS and diverse CHOICE a Book Fair provides. Each case contains a carefully chosen selection of the most popular books sourced from various publishers and authors. This fun, pop-up bookshop event generates unmatched excitement around books, allowing children to see, touch, and connect with literature, ultimately igniting a passion for reading.

Hosting a second Book Fair later in the year will double your school's excitement and enthusiasm for reading. It will provide a second visit for students to the magical world of a bookstore in their school. It will further amplify excitement for reading, allowing students to discover another new series and delve into their evolving interests as their reading skills improve and flourish.

In between Book Fairs, the Scholastic Book Club keeps the enthusiasm alive by offering students consistent ACCESS to the books they love. From young learners to older readers, Book Club enables children to discuss books in their homes with their guardians. Together, they make a CHOICE from a diverse selection of genres and publishers eight times a year, all at affordable prices

This is why Clubs and Fairs work better together — they ignite an initial spark of curiosity, encouraging students to pick up books and dive into the world of reading while also providing consistent access to affordable, age-appropriate titles to keep them reading for pleasure all year long.

Brand-New Phonics Reading System, Featuring the much-loved character, Ella!

Ella and Olivia have warmed the hearts of readers for over a decade. The series follows Ella from her first year of school in Meet Ella, through early primary in Ella and Olivia, into upper primary in Ella Diaries and into high school in Ella at Eden. Now, there’s a new series Ella’s World, for brand-new readers to begin their Ella journey.

IN 2012, SCHOLASTIC AUSTRALIA commissioned the new Ella and Olivia series to Sydney-based author, Yvette Poshoglian, and illustrator Danielle McDonald. After almost a decade, there are over 40 books in this series, with new books still being published today.

As readers grew, Scholastic decided to release a new series featuring Ella at age ten. This series was to take on a diary format, and was to be funny, quirky and highly relatable for a primary school reader. Melbourne-based author, Meredith Costain took the mantle and Ella Diaries was born. This series, illustrated again by Danielle McDonald, has been hugely popular, with over 30 books in print and more on the way! Meredith also writes the accompanying diary of the younger sister, Olivia, in Olivia’s Secret Scribbles

Even though readers grew in age, they didn’t wane in their love for Ella. And so, again, Scholastic embarked on another series, taking Ella into her high school years. Ella at Eden features Ella at age 12, as she moves into high school at the prestigious boarding school, Eden College. The format of these books is a first-person narrative, moving the reader on from the simpler diary format into longer narrative fiction. These books all have a mystery element, and are written by middle grade author, Laura Sieveking.

In 2021, we went back to the beginning, showcasing Ella in her first year of school. In this early independent reader series, Meet Ella, is written by Sydney author, Rebecca McRitchie, who adds a touch of humour and lots of heart. This series is simpler than Ella and Olivia, and is perfect for the brand-new independent reader. It is also illustrated by Danielle McDonald.

NOW, IN 2025, SCHOLASTIC AUSTRALIA has released a brand-new phonics reading system, featuring Ella. Written by teacher-trained Yvette Poshoglian and illustrated by Camilla Frescura, Ella’s World uses phonics and decodable reading in foundation handwriting font. It includes a phonemes chart, phonics featured and instructions for parents on how to help their brand-new reader to use this series to begin their reading journey.

Each book includes a Phoneme Chart and Words List.

Each story uses phonics and decodable reading in foundation handwriting font.
