Early Years Foundation Stage – Reception | Foundation Stage 2

A dynamic early years programme that bridges the gap between play and formal school learning

Closely matched to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, Get Set Early Years focuses on the specific areas of Literacy, Mathematics and Understanding the world.

For each of the three topics, there is a Teacher’s Guide full of practical activity ideas that cover all the Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Corresponding activity books promote learning and development across both the prime and specific areas of the framework. Additionally, they recognise the importance of strong foundations in reading, writing and numbers, ensuring children are fully equipped for a smooth transition into school.

EARLY YEARS 8 Early Years

WHY CHOOSE GET SET EARLY YEARS?

Transitioning from play to structured learning can be challenging for children. Get Set Early Years is designed to help them do this through a variety of fun activities for use both in and outside the classroom.

Follows the EYFS framework

Activities promote learning and development across specific areas of the Early Years Framework, as well as fostering the three characteristics of effective teaching and learning: playing and exploring; active learning; and creating and thinking critically.

Get Set Mathematics

focuses on building children’s early number sense, including key skills like subitising, counting and recognising numerals, as well as their understanding of colour, shape, space and measure.

Get Set Literacy

supports children’s early reading and writing skills, with a particular emphasis on developing language, phonics and vocabulary knowledge, alongside the physical, cognitive and perceptual skills needed for letter formation.

Get Set Understanding the World

Reception – Year 1 | Foundation Stage 2 – Primary Stage 1

Affordable and effective phonics books and classroom resources to get every child reading fluently

My Letters and Sounds is a brand-new systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) programme, validated by England’s Department for Education and aligned to Letters and Sounds

Developed by expert authors and teachers, the scheme provides a range of high-quality and affordable resources for use in school and at home. With plenty of guidance and CPD training available, the scheme is easy to implement, making it ideal for use in international schools.

PHONICS 14 Phonics

WHY CHOOSE MY LETTERS AND SOUNDS?

My Letters and Sounds offers your staff everything they need to deliver effective phonics instruction, allowing teachers to concentrate on how to teach, rather than what to teach, and to focus on the needs of their class.

Perfect for international schools, My Letters and Sounds provides:

Daily lesson plans that reduce teacher workload

Teacher’s Handbooks include a lesson plan for every day of teaching, providing schools with a consistent approach to phonics, with over a thousand online and physical resources to reinforce learning.

Plenty of phonics practice

Write-in workbooks link to each lesson to provide highly targeted practice and revision of recently learnt GPCs and tricky words.

Attractive and engaging books

Beautifully illustrated decodable readers feature a wide range of stories and themes that will appeal to children from a variety of backgrounds.

Cost-effective resources

Affordable readers and workbooks suitable for schools of all sizes.

Ideal for international schools

A complete toolkit for phonics

The structured approach of My Letters and Sounds is particularly beneficial for multilingual learners who may find the complexities of English spelling unpredictable. This makes the scheme ideal for international schools as it provides a clear and consistent route for learning letter-sound relationships and decoding new words, whilst also highlighting those irregular or ‘tricky words’ that do not follow ordinary phonemic rules.

Books for international schools 15

Pupil Books

These write-in workbooks can be used at school or at home to practise the key phonics skills of grapheme recognition and recall, blending to read and segmenting to spell, and build children’s confidence in reading and writing captions and sentences.

With a page or double-page spread for every new learning point in My Letters and Sounds, the books provide highly targeted practice and integrated revision of recently learnt GPCs and tricky words. Carefully designed to appeal to young learners, the activities are consistent and predictable, and, as the children do not need to complete all the activities in one go, the books are easy to fit into your school timetable.

Each new GPC is introduced in a predictable way to encourage greater independence in the children.

Workbooks are useful for providing additional support to children who need help keeping up with their peers.

PHONICS
Activities use the mnemonic as a reminder to reinforce the new letter shape and its sound.
16 Phonics

Regular letter-formation activities are provided to reinforce learning.

In Phase Five, familiar activities are used to introduce new graphemes, but there are more words to read to reflect the children’s growing stamina.

Writing opportunities become increasingly challenging as children move through the programme.

Answers to the Phonics Practice Pupil Books are free to download from the Schofield & Sims website.

Phonics Readers

The My Letters and Sounds Phonics Readers are exciting, fully decodable stories that perfectly match the progression of the My Letters and Sounds SSP programme. Designed to be used by children aged 4-5, these books allow them to apply their phonics skills to reading ‘real’ books from a very early stage.

A variety of attractive, contemporary illustration styles give the readers the look and feel of real, high-quality children’s picture books. Written in natural language, with plenty of humour, the story texts focus on themes and experiences that will appeal to young children from a variety of different backgrounds.

The decodable books also provide additional support for parents, with activities for the adult to do with the child before and after they read the story.

New GPCs and tricky words are gradually introduced to ensure children are given focused practice.

Digraphs and trigraphs are underlined to remind children that the group of letters makes one sound.

PHONICS
Vibrant illustrations are closely related to each story. 120 brand-new books feature a wide range of topics and stories.
18 Phonics

Tricky words are highlighted in blue.

Non-fiction stories appear from Phase Three to develop children’s reading-for-information skills.

High-quality photography is used in some non-fiction books.

Text devices such as captions and labels are gradually introduced.

Increased space is allocated to text rather than pictures.

Assessment

My Letters and Sounds helps you to track your children’s understanding over the course of each phase. Daily formative assessment is made manageable using ‘snapshot’ assessments of a different group of children during each phonics teaching session. Advice on summative assessment is also given at the end of each phase, helping you to choose appropriate next steps. In addition, optional Assessment checks enable you to assess a particular aspect of a child’s phonic knowledge, such as recognition and recall of graphemes, or spelling of tricky words. The summative assessment guidance in the Teacher’s Handbooks suggests when to use these checks with the whole class, but they can also be used with individual children as required.

A Daily assessment schedule helps you to divide your class into groups and focus on certain phonics skills each day.

In each phase, there are separate downloadable assessment resources to evaluate children’s developing phonics skills.

You can also find My Letters and Sounds on the online assessment and tracking programme, Phonics Tracker (www.phonicstracker.com).

A developmental handwriting scheme to help every child achieve clear, confident and joined handwriting

WriteWell is a complete course designed to guide children from their first steps in mark-making towards the development of secure, fluent and comfortable joined handwriting.

Based on the latest research evidence and best practice in handwriting, it provides a consistent basis for teaching and learning this complex skill across all primary school year groups. It includes:

• Eleven Pupil Books for practice of letters and joins

• A Teacher’s Handbook with teaching and assessment support

• A double-sided poster for handwriting reminders

• A range of free online resources

HANDWRITING 28 Handwriting

WHY CHOOSE WRITEWELL?

WriteWell ensures that children get the basics of handwriting correct from the start by providing:

1. A developmental approach

Children begin the programme when they are developmentally ready and progress at their own pace as their handwriting skills flourish.

2. Movement-focused instruction

There is a strong emphasis on movement throughout the programme, from the motion-inspired letter family groupings, formation patters and kinaesthetic activities in the early stages, to the joining patterns and fluency activities in the later stages.

3. Physical preparation

Handwriting is a physical process and WriteWell ensures that children develop good writing habits using a system of reminders called the ‘P checks’ (posture, pencil grip, paper position and pressure).

4. Structured practice

Pupils are given extensive opportunities to practise new learning in activities ranging from simple tracing and copying tasks to more challenging composition exercises. Activities are carefully designed to minimise cognitive load so that children can focus on developing their handwriting while reinforcing learning from previously taught areas of literacy.

WriteWell follows a developmental model based on the National Handwriting Association’s eight ‘S Factors for Success’. The National Handwriting Association is a leading authority in handwriting that promotes good practice.

Pupil Books

The eleven WriteWell pupil books provide carefully structured progression and a consistent approach to learning handwriting for children aged 3 to 11. Printed on high-quality paper that won’t show through, each book contains 15 units, together with a child-friendly introduction and at least one longer ‘WriteWell challenge’ task giving pupils the opportunity to use their best handwriting to ‘show off’ everything they have learnt.

Each unit provides a clear handwriting focus, explained in the information panel at the beginning of each spread, followed by focused practice activities that gradually increase in difficulty. Exercises progress from simple ‘Try it’ and ‘Practice it’ to more challenging ‘Apply it’ activities that encourage children to use the handwriting focus in a realistic context.

Correct letter formation is modelled with a red starting dot and directional arrows.

Teacher’s Handbooks

The WriteWell Teacher’s Handbook provides in-depth support to help you teach handwriting. Mirroring the structure of the Pupil Books, it aligns learning with the National Handwriting Association’s ‘S Factors for Success’. For every stage of handwriting, there is a detailed set of teacher’s notes providing guidance on the key issues at each level of development, as well as comprehensive letter formation and joining charts, and assessment and intervention resources.

The handbook also contains a ‘Curriculum chart’ and ‘Scope and sequence chart’ to help you navigate the pupil books at a glance, together with an extended introduction providing essential information for improving the teaching of handwriting in your school.

An ‘Overview’ at the start of each Stage chapter summarises the contents of the section.

‘P

checks’ focus on the physical writing process and help to establish good habits.

Animations showing the correct formations of letters, numbers and joins allow you to demonstrate each handwriting focus confidently.

Detailed notes for each pupil book explain how to teach each unit and get the most out of the activities.

A

structured programme to

help

you plan, teach and assess spelling in a systematic and progressive way

Comprising six pupil books and two books for teachers, Spelling is suitable for all pupils who have a basic understanding of letter-sound relationships. This accessible series, ideal for whole-school use, gives pupils extensive practice in using their phonic knowledge to spell words and encourages them to become effective spellers.

The Spelling series introduces rules, guidelines and conventions and encourages pupils to develop the skills and strategies they need to become confident spellers who can monitor and correct their own spelling. The series is supported by a range of free downloads available from the Schofield & Sims website.

WHY CHOOSE SPELLING?

Based on the popular pedagogical model ‘teach, practise, apply and assess’, the series builds pupils’ knowledge of spellings by:

l systematically introducing common spelling rules, patterns, guidelines and word conventions

l exploring word structure etymology, and the relationship between words of shared origin

l suggesting strategies for remembering common ‘tricky’ or ‘exception’ words, as well as more challenging Topic words

l providing regular transcription practice through tailored dictation activities

l encouraging pupils to monitor and correct their own spelling.

An accompanying teacher’s guide provides detailed teaching notes that suggest how best to explain and explore each learning point in the pupil books.

A separate Teacher’s Resource Book contains photocopy masters that support teaching, assessment and record-keeping.

Pupil Books

Each Spelling pupil book is divided into six sections containing five main pages that introduce new spelling conventions, followed by a Tricky words or Topic words page that focuses on particular words. Books 2 to 6 also feature regular Revision sections that use crossword-style clues, cloze and proofreading activities to elicit spellings that pupils should have mastered. The main pages in the pupil books have a simple and consistent structure comprising three parts:

1. Remember – a description of the pattern, strategy or guideline with an example

2. Try it – practice in spelling words using the pattern, strategy, rule or guideline

3. Read–cover–write – practice in using the spelling focus in whole sentences.

The main ‘focus’ or learning point is introduced at the start, with relevant examples provided.

Illustrations kept to a minimum to keep pages clean and uncluttered.

‘I can’ statements encourage pupils to take pride in their achievements.

Teacher’s Guide

The Spelling Teacher’s Guide supports the systematic and explicit teaching of strategies, rules, guidelines and patterns to help pupils throughout your school to make good progress in spelling. The main part of the book comprises detailed Teaching notes – one set for every page in the six pupil books. Clearly laid out and in a format that is easy to refer to in the classroom, each set of notes suggests how best to introduce each learning point or ‘focus’ and how to model it in the classroom.

The Teacher’s Guide also includes a full introduction to the series and in-depth guidance on how to implement each of the four stages of the ‘teach, practise, apply and assess’ teaching model.

Each set of Teaching notes corresponds to a page in the pupil books, making planning easy.

Teaching sessions are short and direct, lasting about 10 minutes.

Clear references are given to photocopiable extension and revision activities, as well as pupil prompts and reminders.

Target words from the current focus are underlined in each dictation sentence.

Detailed information on the different assessment options is provided, covering ongoing assessment, weekly assessment and summative assessment.

Further guidelines provide advice on key areas of teaching, including timetabling, differentiation, grouping and partner work, and spelling in the context of writing.

A layered plan of formative and summative assessment allows you to track progress.

Teacher’s Resource Book

The Spelling Teacher’s Resource Book features a comprehensive collection of photocopy masters to help you get the most out of the series. Part 1 of the book supports the ‘teach’, ‘practise’ and ‘apply’ stages of the teaching model and contains extension and revision activities to reinforce or extend the learning points from the pupil books such as Additional word lists that extend the range of words provided in pupil books. Part 1 also includes resources that encourage pupils to apply what they have learnt in spelling sessions in their own independent writing. Part 2 of the Resource Book provides materials that support the ‘assess’ stage of the teaching model, covering ongoing and summative assessment.

Additional word lists can be photocopied and given to pupils to learn at home.

Word collector sheets encourage

to investigate different spelling patterns.
