During Cadiz’s village council meeting last Thursday, the members worked through several readings of ordinances, some of which were in their first reading, some in their second or third. But many of the ordinances reflected the status of 2021 as the council went through their due diligence to get internal matters addressed before starting a new calendar year: village employee pay periods, legal services, and health insurance. Some of the other ordinances focused on agreements between the village, public defender, and prosecutor and also clarified village employee holidays.

Ordinance 2021-38 had its first reading: the ordinance authorizes “the clerktreasurer to prepare the village’s temporary appropriations for the fiscal year ending 2022.”

Ordinances 2021-36, 2021-35, and 202134 all had their second readings.

36 provides “for the definition of employee pay periods for the calendar year 2022.”

35 is “an ordinance authorizing the mayor and clerk-treasurer of the village of Cadiz, Ohio to enter into a contract with the Harrison County prosecuting attorney’s office for the legal services as police prosecutor during calendar year 2022.”

And 34 is “an ordinance establishing the particular health insurance program for the village employees for the year 2022.”

As for third readings, 32 is “an ordinance authorizing the mayor and clerk-treasurer to enter into an agreement with the Harrison County public defender commission for payment of the same for representation of indigent citizens within the village of Cadiz.”

As for 2021-33, revolving around employee holidays, village administrator Brandon Ludwig proposed using President’s Day and Columbus Day as personal days for employees, but the discussion was tabled for the meeting on the 16th.

The Harrison County commissioners met for their first meeting of the month on Dec. 1, and in the short session, commissioners Don Bethel and Paul Coffland passed a pair of agreements that focus on granting supplemental easements to AEP for power line improvement. The first, Agreement 65-21, granted one of the easements and its right-of-way to the Ohio power company for a 0.838-acre plot in Short Creek Township. The agreement allowed the board of commissioners to grant access to the project’s property to AEP for “electric transmission, distribution, communication lines equipment fixtures to allow for the rebuilding of the line across the property.” The pricing for the first agreement came in at $37,710; the agreement was approved and passed by the commissioners.

And the second agreement (Agreement 6621), much like the first, granted AEP easement and right-of-way but for a second, slightly larger parcel; the permissions of the second agreement were the same as the first but only had a different plot for which the power company could renovate lines. As with the first agreement, the second had already been approved by prosecutor Lauren Knight, and the commissioners passed 66-21. The second parcel was for 1.126 acres and an easement payment for $50,670.

Both agreements came prepared with an easement payment schedule and a map of the affected parcels of property, but the commissioners revealed that the plots were “outside Harrisville.” Commissioner Don Bethel explained that the easements would generate funding for the two aforementioned pricings; it was not money to be paid. “That is money coming to Harrison County, not leaving it,” he clarified — “for much-needed, updated lines,” Coffland added. The easement total is over $88,000.

December has some wonderful events during its 31 days: joining the family for a trip to see the lights of Oglebay or the nutcrackers in Steubenville, for example. And we do enjoy them all. However, there’s one day in the month that stands out from the rest: Dec. 7, the attack on Pearl Harbor. Eighty years ago, more than 2,300 troops were killed by Japanese bombs.

Heart-wrenching programs are still held, and some of the survivors attend a village ceremony, but many still living are left unable to gather.

And most who passed away were interred on the grounds where the disaster took place. Flags are hung in honor on electric poles, schools, post offices, home fronts, and libraries.

With the thought of bringing about a united look on Route 20, outside the Smithfield limits, my husband, Lamont, and I decided to add a more patriotic look to our “neck of the woods” to remember Pearl Harbor and the events in 1941.

My niece, Nola Toth, had thought about joining 4-H, and a community project was needed. We agreed to put up the 25 small American flags along our road to show that we still cared about those who lost their lives 80 years ago.

While Nola decided against joining 4-H, 740-945-2205 I went ahead with the project. We have heard call between 12:30 - 1pm nice comments about it, and on nice days, it is a good walking project — I just pray that nothing like that will ever happen again.

During the Freeport village council meeting, the members established the village Christmas light contest date. For those residents participating, the judging will take place on the night of Saturday, Dec. 18. And a motion passed by the council also created prizes for those who finish in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.

Bob Allen of E L Robinson Engineering talked to the Cadiz village council during Dec. 2’s meeting regarding the present status of the village’s south and center collection line project. The project went out to bid last month, and two separate contractors, James White and Border Patrol, both submitted bids; both contractors have done business with the village before.

The total project cost is estimated to be around $11.7 million. Some of that will be covered by an EPA grant of $3,269,000, some by a $950,000 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers grant, and some by a $1,216,271 USDA Rural Development grant.

An added development in the project focused on constructing the new county jail, which will be started in 2022. The new jail will house 60 beds and will be located on one of the collection system’s lines. The condition and capacity of this line are currently being evaluated to ensure that the system line can carry increased flow from the new facility.

Allen explained to the council that whenever a facility like a hospital or a jail is located on one of these service lines, they should have a bar screen installed to catch debris flushed into the system.

BY ED BANKS Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer RICHMOND—Eight second-half points by the Edison Local Lady Wildcats were not even close to hanging with the Lady Huskies on Thursday night in Richmond. After taking a few minutes to warm up, Harrison Central put on an offensive and defensive show that even had coach Nick Yourkovich smiling.

With two wins already pocketed, the Huskies used 45 game points to chalk up their third season win over the Wildcats 45-23. The Huskies outscored the Wildcats by 3 points in the first quarter (10-7) and led by 8 points (2315) as the first-half horn sounded.

At the core of the scoring was Harrison’s center McKayla Dunkle, who held 10 of the

team’s first-half points. Maddy Butler had 7 points, and McKenzie Harbold, Angie Ferri, and Kayln Ledger all contributed a deuce for the team’s halftime score of 23.

When the second half unfolded, the Huskies ratcheted up their performance a notch and ran off 14 points compared to the home standers’ 3 points in the third quarter (37-20). The fourth period was even more productive, and 18 points resulted for the Huskies to just 3 points for the Wildcats. Dunkle added another handful of the points with 13 to her credit.

Dunkle owned both the offensive and defensive boards, and the rebounds led her to 24 points on the night; the 24 points were a game-high total. Butler stayed consistent and tossed in an additional 6 points, and Harbold added 3.

Lady Huskies dispatch Potters 40-26

BY ED BANKS Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer CADIZ—Outside the Harrison Central gymnasium, the wind was brutally cold, but inside, the Lady Huskies weathered a different element to register another victory. Now 4-2 on the season, the Huskies didn’t disappoint; they snagged their fourth win of the season with a 40-26 score over the visiting East Liverpool Potters.

Scoring in the initial frame of the contest went at a snail’s pace, but it concluded with the Huskies on top 12-5. The second period offered little momentum for either team, but again, Harrison was able to outscore the Potters

10 to 7 points. The teams went to the locker room, leaving behind a 10-point advantage for Harrison and a halftime score of 22-12.

McKayla Dunkle scored 6 points in the half, Maddy Butler scored 9, Angi Ferri got 5, and Cali Lewis added 2.

Harrison scored but 3 points in the third quarter, and East Liverpool managed another 6.

The big difference in scoring didn’t happen until the final quarter: The Huskies put up 15 points to East Liverpool’s 8. Ferri added 1 point in the fourth, Dunkle settled down, got accurate, and added 10 points, and Mackenzie Harbold helped carry the Huskies through the contest with 7 points.

However, despite the varsity victory, the junior varsity lost 27-23.

Harrison Central bowling teams roll even with Beaver Local and Union Local

BY ED BANKS Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer CADIZ—On Tuesday evening, the Harrison Central varsity and reserve bowling teams were in St. Clairsville for a contest with Union Local at the St. Clair Lanes. In the girls’ half of the action, the match ended 1,633-1,682, favoring the Jets.

The high individual scores for the Huskies were Alyena Runevitch with 175 and 171, Lauren Best with 153 and 139, and Alexis Lishick with 143. In the boys’ match, the score ended 1,923-1,777, favoring the Huskies. The individual high scorers for the Harrison boys were Davis Chrisman with 200, Kobie Hennis with 200, Chad Viers with 182, Corey Hayes with 173, and John Gray with 160.

The junior varsity girls also rolled.

Harrison won in a 985-930 match, and their high scorers were Emily Schmidli at 125, Kendra Dewees with 102, and Cam Aughinbaugh and Hannah Ragusa both with 78. As for the JV boys’ score, they fell to Union Local, 1071-1194. Harrison’s high scorers were Peyton Roski with a 150, Kyle

WATSON Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer CADIZ—The Edison Wildcats and Harrison Central Huskies tipped off a basketball game for the first time as Buckeye Eight divisional foes last Friday night in Cadiz. One of the most noticeable differences on the Harrison Central campus was the presence of the fans.

The entirety of the 2020 season was played in front of limited capacity due to the pandemic, so there was a renewed excitement as the two teams took to the floor. But the impressive crowd was treated to a slow start for Harrison that gave way to an onslaught as the game carried on. Despite the sluggish first quarter, the Huskies overcame and cruised to a 64-25 victory, their second of the young season.

This year, the two teams will compete in the Buckeye Eight North Division after Harrison’s move from the South Division — something that started this season. However, don’t expect this matchup to grow into a long-standing divisional rivalry. Edison will soon move on from their league membership, leaving the North Division with only four teams. The move is expected to start a new ripple in the landscape of the league, as school leaders will have more decisions to make in terms of realignment or expansion. For the here and now, though, the Huskies hold the divisional edge with the Wildcats.

While the Huskies came into the matchup at an even 1-1, the Wildcats were hungry for their

first victory of the season, having been blitzed in their first two contests. In the early going, the Wildcats seemed to find a working rhythm. The Wildcats and Huskies ended the first quarter knotted at seven-all — a promising start for the visitors that had struggled coming into the tip. Unfortunately for Edison supporters, the level start didn’t carry into the second frame.

The Huskies outscored the Wildcats 21-8 in the following eight minutes. What looked to be the makings of a tight ball game had completely turned course by halftime. With a 28-15 advantage at the break, the Huskies did nothing but pile on in the second half. Junior guard Jace Madzia dropped 8 of his game-high 15 points in the third, and the Huskies once again outpaced the Wildcats by a considerable margin at 226. With a 50-21 lead after three quarters, the Huskies simply had to bleed out the running clock in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Hayden Cassidy continued his strong start, adding 14 points to follow up on Madzia’s performance. Freshman Mykel Quito was a force in the paint, netting 10 marks to give head coach Justin Clifford three guys in double digits on the night. A collection of Huskies rounded out the scoresheet against the Wildcats: Clayton Vermillion and Joenus Jones scratched 6 points each, Daniel Ody had 5 points, and Camron McAfee added 4 on the offensive end.

Brothers Nick and Alex Fluharty rounded out Harrison’s scoring with a bucket each.

This past Tuesday night, the Huskies (2-2) fell to Beaver Local 58-49 on the road.

And last Thursday evening, the Harrison Central varsity bowlers met for a match against the visiting Beaver Local at Cadiz’s J D Bowling Lanes. The varsity girls’ match saw Harrison Central win with a score of 1,545 to Beaver Local’s 1,350. The Huskies’ high scorers were Cami Basich with a 142 and an 80, Aleyna Runevitch with a 164, Lauren Best with 144, Alexis Lishick at 134, and Erica Emhoff with 105. It was the first win of the season for the girls.

On the other hand, the boys scored 1,810, which fell short of Beaver Local’s 2,073. The high scores from the match include Kobie Hennis with 213 and 167, Corey Hayes at 172, Chad Viers with 171 and 168, Davis Chrisman at 171, and Drew Culbertson with 130. “The boys continue to do a great job, especially for a young team,” said coach Bobbi Parkinson. “They will keep on working hard to improve their scores and bring home some wins. I’m very proud of these young bowlers. They give their all each time they step on the lanes to improve,” she added.

2021 football season in the books; champions crowned in Ohio and WV

OHIO VALLEY—Another high school football season is in the books; teams in both Ohio and West Virginia hauled home the championship hardware last weekend from Canton and Wheeling.

On the Ohio side, Lakewood St. Edwards defeated Springfield 23-13 in the Division I matchup. In Division II, Winton Woods topped Akron Archbishop Hoban 21-10. Chardon, who knocked out Dover and West Holmes, took the top spot in Division III, dropping Badin 21-14 for their third state title in school history. The Hilltoppers made it a back-toback year, as they also won it all in 2020. It was an all-out barnburner in Division IV, as Clinton Massie topped Youngstown Ursuline 29-28. Massie scored on fourth and goal with 45 seconds remaining, then went on to convert the two-point conversion for the school's third state title. In West Virginia, the Class A crown went to the Ritchie County Rebels with a 42-21 victory over Williamstown. It is the first-ever football state championship for the Rebels.

In Class AA, Fairmont Senior completed its run as the 16th seed, beating second-seeded Independence 21-12. Class AAA matched up two heavyweights in 1-seed Huntington and 2-seed Martinsburg. Martinsburg picked up their ninth state title, rolling to a 62-21 victory.

Women’s Health Basketball Classic held; Union Local upends Fort Frye

By Ed Banks News-Herald Sportswriter CADIZ—This past Saturday, eight girls’ basketball teams were on hand to participate in the annual Women’s Health Basketball Classic.

To make the 2021 edition a success, the schools on hand included Wheeling Park, Steubenville Big Red, Malvern, Shadyside, Tusky Valley, Harrison Central, Union Local, and Fort Frye.

In the Classic’s opener, Steubenville Big Red ran into a buzzsaw when Wheeling Park outscored them in the first half by 40 points 5212. Wheeling continued their onslaught in the second half and scored an additional 22 points to close the contest 74-23.

Game 2 featured Malvern and Shadyside.

The contest was played at a high pace, and the scoring and action were both continuous and equal. Shadyside held the upper hand at the halfway mark with a 31-25 score. The second half remained very entertaining, and constant lead changes set the stage for a back-and-forth

conclusion. During the final minutes, no team lead was by more than 4 points, and in the last two minutes, the leads were only held 1 point at a time. In the end, Shadyside prevailed with a 51-50 final score, the day’s closest contest.

Harrison Central and Tusky Valley were in the third spot, and a very talented Tusky Valley took a 23-8 lead in the first quarter and turned the final eight minutes into a 51-16 final score.

McKayla Dunkle had 10 points in the game, and both Emma Fischer and Kaily Banal added a 3-point field goal.

In the day’s closing contest, Union Local surprised everyone in the gymnasium — especially Fort Frye — with an offensive surge that produced a first-half lead of 38-25. The Jets produced a near-flawless effort and never looked back as they moved to a 52-42 victory.

The Jets were led by Reagan Vinskovich, who was unstoppable underneath the hoop. She not only dominated over the Fort but put on an offensive showing that netted 33 points of the team’s total score.

Arnold named OAC Freshman of the Year

WESTERVILLE—Mount Union freshman — and Harrison Central graduate — Jasmine Arnold recently earned the OAC Freshman of the Year title. Arnold, a cross-country standout during her time at Harrison Central, continued her running career at Mount Union University as part of the women’s cross-country team.

This year, Arnold’s performance at the OAC Championships earned her a 9thplace finish, and her placement in the championships allowed her team to earn the runners-up position overall. For the Purple Raiders, the 2nd-place finish hadn’t happened since 2014. At Mount Union, the last time a freshman was named to the honor was in 2016.

At the Great Lakes Regional, Arnold came in at the 50th-place position while helping to propel Mount Union to the 8thoverall slot in the team run.

Harrison Central seniors hold coin drive

The Conotton Valley Board of Education held a special meeting on Tuesday pertaining to the bidding process for the health clinic and competition pool addition, aka the “Project.”

In essence, the special meeting was only to reject the singular bid received for the Rocket Center project. Initially, the project had gone to bid on Nov. 22, but the only offer the board received “exceeded the published estimate by more than 10%.” This is prohibited by the Ohio Revised Code, so the superintendent recommended that the bid be rejected.

A group of seniors held a coin drive at the school for a project to sponsor a child’s gifts through Harrison County Job and Family Services. The coin drive raised enough money that the group was also able to shop for toys to “Stuff the Bus.” All gifts go to Harrison County children.

HC seniors, Jewett Methodist youth, and Military Support Group partner up for Christmas packing

BY REBECCA BRATTEN WEISS Harrison News-Herald Reporting Journalist On the evening of Dec. 7, a group of seniors from Harrison Central High School gathered in the basement of the Cadiz firehouse, along with members of the Harrison County Military Support Group and teens from the Jewett United Methodist youth group. They all spent several hours there, packing shipping boxes with Christmas presents, cookies, and basic necessities for service members stationed in the U.S. and abroad.

Harrison Central senior and project participant Mckayla Dunkle talked to the News-Herald about this project, which was the brainchild of her classmate Kadence Tanner.

Dunkle explained that Tanner came up with the idea of shipping packages to service members when she and several of her fellow seniors were trying to formulate a plan to fulfill a school requirement for their class on service learning. To complete the class, the students have to organize a project that gives back to their community in some way. Because so many students have family members or loved ones in the military, the idea resonated with them. “In our area, it’s something people can relate to,” Dunkle said.

Once the project was approved by the Board of Education, the students reached out to the Harrison County Military Support Group, which has been sending packages to service personnel since their founding nearly 21 years ago, shortly after 9/11. Typically, the Military Support Group sends boxes to service members four times a year: Christmas, Easter, Fourth of July, then Thanksgiving and Halloween donations get combined in one shipping.

Terrence Talley visits HC to talk mental health

The Harrison County Juvenile Court sponsored a guest speaker for grades 7-12 at Harrison Central on Tuesday, Dec. 7. Terrence Talley, the author of “Secrets Anonymous,” shared stories with the students that made them laugh and cry. His hope is to remind students that they are not alone and inspire them to reach out to others. He travels the country talking to over 150,000 students a year and sharing stories to promote positive mental health.

By Susan Adams On Saturday, Dec. 11, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Santa Claus is coming to the Deersville Community Fire Department. There will be free pictures with Santa. Cookies and milk will be served, and children will receive a goodie bag — sounds like lots of fun to me!

The Deersville UM Church has Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. and church services at 11 every Sunday. All are welcome to come.

On Monday, Dec. 13 at 10 a.m., the Woody Paul Blanket Mission will meet in the church’s fellowship hall. A covered dish lunch will follow.

Also on Monday, Dec. 13, starting at 7 p.m., will be the meeting of the boards at the Deersville UM Church.

Congratulations, Koda. Koda is the son of his biggest supporters Travis and Nikki Devore of rural Uhrichsville, grandson to Shelley (late Chuck Devore), great-grandson to Harold (late Joanne) McMillen of rural Deersville.

The Ourant Schoolhouse Association named their 2022-2023 officers: president, Jim Dowdle; vice president, Matt Dowdle; secretary, Lou Ann Dowdle; and treasurer, Nellie Erow.

Ourant (built in 1873) is located on Deersville Ridge, and the one-room school is used each year by Harrison Hills School District to give elementary school students a “one-room school” experience. Thank you to this group for preserving this piece of history. The last teacher here was Elizabeth Keesey in the 1941 school year.

The Moravian Trail Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held their meeting on Saturday, Nov. 20 at the American Legion Post 3 in Cadiz, Ohio. As a service project, the group collected 64 pairs of men’s tube socks that were donated to Capital Health to pass out to veterans. The hostess was Janice Yager, and Peggy Milliken gave a program about Armistice Day. The minutes and treasurer’s reports were accepted. The president-general letter was read, and potential new members were discussed. The next meeting will be Saturday, Dec. 18 at 12:30 p.m. at Mr. Lee’s Restaurant in Cambridge.

The Brownsville Christian Church welcomes new Pastor Tim Thomas. Brownsville is just a short piece from Deersville toward Dennison on the Moravian Trail. They welcome you to their services that are at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. This church was moved from Tappan to the ridge during the construction of the Tappan Dam. Deersville and the community extend sympathy to the family of Joyce Kinsey Lannum, 93, formerly of Freeport, who passed away on Dec. 5. Joyce and her husband Clarence were instrumental in bringing back the theater in Deersville by forming the Deersville Community Players. Joyce’s sweet words of encouragement will echo backstage at the theater always: “It’s time to sparkle!” Joyce was also “Queen Mum” for the Deersville Red Hat Mammas. The Roadside Grill on State Route 331 has announced a change in hours until spring. They will be closed Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday and open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

The Harrison County auditor announced that 2022 dog licenses are now on sale in December at Bardall Crossing Hardware Store in Freeport and the dog warden’s in Cadiz.

The people of Freeport wish to thank Dan Snyder and his helpers for putting Christmas decorations up and members of the Four Seasons Garden Club that decorated the pots in the square and the churches.

The Deersville Community Choir will present a Christmas program, “Child of Christmas,” on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Deersville United Methodist Church.

On Dec. 4, Freeport had its Christmas abouttown; around 100 people enjoyed a Christmas tour through the village to see Christmasdecorated homes. Thanks to all the people who decorated their homes and businesses that they shared with others. Special thanks to the Freeport Fire Department, Deersville General Store, Freeport Presbyterian Church, Anderson Hoof Trimming, Piedmont United Methodist Church, Koch Caramel, and sponsors Freeport United Methodist Church for adding special displays and serving hot chocolate and cookies at the church.

The Freeport Presbyterian Church hosted an open house on Dec. 5 to honor Pastor Jim McConnell, who will be retiring after serving as pastor for 20 years at the Freeport and Nottingham Presbyterian Churches. A light luncheon was served by Lori Miller and Jennifer Romanski. Marty Bardall made him a pillow and presented it to him.

Pastor Jim, who has worn many hats, welcomed and thanked everyone for coming and for 20 years of memories. He appreciated all and sang songs with the theme “What A Day It Is,” his favorite song that he would sing at nursing homes. A card basket was available to write a line and express fond memories and appreciation.

Dec. 4 was the Stine’s Christmas craft open house” at the Freeport firehouse with many beautiful crafts to pick from and an assortment of cookies and Aunt Nan’s delicious tea. They want to thank everyone who came and supported the family. It was nice to see everyone and get to visit. The door prize winner was Linda Ressler.

Last Sunday at Freeport United Methodist Church, the Advent wreath was lit by Jeremy, Katelyn, Karleigh, and Grayson Obermiller.

Kathy Shannon had the children’s sermon, and lay leaders Rick Moore, Nick Puskarich, and Bob Koch did the Hokey Pokey to “Praise The Lord” — that’s what it’s all about!

He was born in Freeport, a brother of Donna Brick, Jean Bardall, and Linda Scott. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was a lifetime member of Grace United Methodist Church in

Uhrichsville.

There will be a Christmas cookie sale on Dec. 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Freeport United Methodist Church.

On Dec. 12, the Freeport United Methodist Church will have lunch following worship and will prepare fruit baskets at 2 p.m. They will be going around Christmas caroling and delivering fruit baskets.

Can you believe it is almost Christmas?

West Chester senior citizens held their annual Christmas party on Dec. 6 at the center.

Manager Fred Dickinson welcomed 30 people to the dinner that was catered by Karen Walton and Sharon Doane. He introduced guest speakers Jamie Smith and Bob Hall, who talked about upcoming Tuscarawas County events.

Dickinson said they lost six members in death in 2020 and 2021 and discussed the new directory.

Everyone repeated the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, and Bob Hall gave the prayer.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal; Fred handed out something for everyone, and they held a gift exchange. Dickinson handed out a special gift to Kelly Martin and thanked all the volunteers for the year. Members presented a gift to Dickinson. The money that was collected all year, $258, was donated to Tuscarawas Community Hospice.

Freeport, Moorefield Township, Washington Township, and Barnesville departments assisted with mutual aid to Antrim, Old Washington, and Fairview fire departments on Monday at 7:18 p.m. to a hunting cabin on Piedmont Marina Road (Guernsey County). The firemen reported the flames started at the back of the structure over a nearby hill into the woods area; the structure collapsed minutes later.

Nobody was living there, but firemen called the Guernsey County sheriff’s deputy to assist with a man who was believed to be intoxicated as he obstructed the firefighters. The man was told to leave, and firefighters remained on the scene until 10:20 p.m. No firefighters were injured, but the cabin and its contents were a total loss.

The Lakeland Academy school held a Santa secret shop between Nov. 30 and Dec. 3, where the students could purchase Christmas gifts.

It was a success. They will have a Christmas party in the classes on Dec. 17. Board members, teachers, PTO members, and board members also attended a Christmas party Saturday night at the winery on Route 22.

Lights need to be turned on by 7 p.m. on Dec. 18; a judge (from out of town) will drive around the village on that evening to choose winners.

The winners will be announced on Monday, Dec. 20. I saw that WVU Medicine Harrison Community Hospital received $18,650 from the 10th annual Sean Carney’s Blues for a Cure concert. I also applaud the efforts of the Harrison County Cancer Crusaders and all the other countless people who work to raise money and awareness for fighting cancer.

As many call Christmas the time of giving, I ask that you please stop and think of a way that you may give to help others this season. I have used a portion of my 4-H fair animal auction check to make donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital the last couple of years. It was my Grandma’s favorite charity. My 4-H club also donates each year to the local animal shelter, which is important to me because I love animals.

Whether it is money or donating time, please think about helping out your favorite charity or charitable cause. And most importantly, remember to make time to slow down and enjoy the season and your family! Hope everybody has a good week.

By Ruth Blackburn Biddy Basketball will hold sign-ups at the Jewett Wildcat Community Center on Dec. 11 and 18 from 10 a.m. to noon. This is for children in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades, and the cost will be $45 for the first child in the family and $40 for each additional child in the same family.

Mark Statler will perform his annual Christmas concert on Dec. 17 at the Jewett Wildcat Community Center at 7 p.m. This is a free concert with a love offering being accepted.

The village employees and volunteers have taken the flags down and put up the Christmas decorations. Thanks to all who helped with this.

The veterans flags will be put up again in the spring. If anyone buys a new one, please take it to Mike McBee at the village park building so that he will have all of them together when it is time to put them back up.

The village selected two Citizens of the Year for 2021: Bobbie and Paul Prevot: Thank you for bringing two new businesses to the community in the past year.

Mike Harris: Thank you, Mike, for the 20-plus years of volunteering to help the community when help was needed; regardless of what needed to be done, you were always there for us.

The village is very blessed to have people like this who continually try to improve the community.

Also, a big thank you to Bobbie and Paul Prevot and BrightSide Tavern for serving a free Thanksgiving dinner to everyone who had nowhere to go. Barbara Hamric Barbara Ann Hamric, 63, of Cadiz, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021 at Trinity West. She was born on March 7, 1958, a daughter of the late James and Flossie Lou Thompson Yoxtheimer.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 45 years, Douglas Hamric; her children, Rebecca (Bryan) Hull, Melissa (Bob) Oline, Russell (Jessica) Hamric; brother James (Kathy) Yoxtheimer; sister Marianne (Troy) Dodson; and grandchildren Zachary, Heidi, Hayley, Piper, Xavier, Harley, Brittani, and Corey.

Friends will be received on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Borkoski Funeral Home (555 East Market Street in Cadiz, Ohio), where services will be held Monday, Dec. 6, 2021, at 12:30 p.m. with Reverend James Hoff officiating.

She was a housekeeper, having worked at Harrison Community Hospital and the Lafferty Group Home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband, William O’Hara.

Bonnie Lou Smith, 68, of Cadiz, passed away Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021, at Union Hospital in Dover, Ohio. She was born Aug. 18, 1953, in Dover, Ohio, a daughter of the late Merle and Kathryn Margaret Alpeter.

Bonnie was an educator and homemaker.

She was a member of Scott United Methodist Church and a graduate of Kent State University.

Bonnie is survived by her husband of 45 years, Richard L. Smith; a son, Lee (Sarah) Smith of Hilliard, Ohio; two daughters, Erica (Jeremiah) Goodpaster of Raeford, North Carolina and Laura (Tim) Walsh of Coventry; five grandchildren, Kathryn, Emily, Joshua, Calvin, and Oliver; a brother, John Alpeter of New Philadelphia and a sister, Connie Alpeter of New Philadelphia, Ohio.

Edna Joyce Lannum Edna Joyce Lannum, age 93, of Northwood Village in Dover, formerly of Ravenna and Freeport, died unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 5, 2021 at 11:15 a.m. in the emergency room of the Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital in Dover, Ohio.

She was born May 18, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Frederick Wayne Kinsey and Frances Burson Perkins Kinsey.

Little Edna Joyce grew up in the little town of Holloway, Ohio and graduated from Holloway High School in 1946. After graduation, she went on to the College of Wooster and received her bachelor’s of liberal arts in 1950. She then was hired by the Freeport School District, which later became Lakeland School District which then evolved into Harrison Hills City School District. She taught English, speech, drama, and Spanish for 30 years and directed at least 70 plays throughout the years. She was the founder of Thespian Troupe 1690, which is still alive today through Harrison Central High School.

She met the love of her life, Clarence Paul Lannum, in the fall of 1950 at Freeport High School, where they were both teaching. They were married on Aug. 27, 1952 in Wellsburg, West Virginia. Clarence died on May 14, 2014.

Clarence and Joyce formed the Deersville Community Players. Joyce was the executive producer and directed numerous productions

Surviving is a daughter, Frances Pauline “Fassie” Streely of Ravenna and her companion, Ray Ferrell; two granddaughters, Lisbeth (Matthew) Tipton of Deerfield and Ashley (Kate) Chandler of Hudson; and five greatgrandchildren, Chandler Paul, Ethan Harold, Jayden, Maddie, and Ellie.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her greatgranddaughter, Paitynn Kennedy Tipton.

Frank Kuchan Frank K. Kuchan, 85, of Hopedale, Ohio died Dec. 4 in Trinity West Medical Center.

He was born on June 25, 1936 in Steubenville, Ohio, son of the late Francis Florian and Stella Graboski Kuchan. He graduated from Catholic Central High School in Steubenville and received his bachelor’s degree from Franciscan University and his master’s from North Carolina State. Frank retired from teaching at Buckeye West High in 1990. He had worked for the EPA in Wheeling and was an associate professor at Franciscan University in Steubenville. He and his wife, Janet, owned and operated The Coffee Cake Winery for many years. He was also one of the founders of the Muskie Inc. Chapter 18.

Frank was a Navy veteran and a member of the Hopedale Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Surviving is his wife, Janet King Kuchan of Hopedale; a son, Verner (Gena) Kuchan of Toronto; two daughters, Telicia (Edward) Kuchan-O’Neil of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania and Julianne Kuchan of Hopedale.

A celebration of life will be held in the summer. The Blackburn Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Larry Wells Larry Eugene “Wellsie” Wells, age 78, of Birmingham Road in Freeport died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2021 in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Born February 8, 1943 in Freeport, Ohio, he was a son of the late Charles Vernon Wells and Helen Beatrice McKibben Wells.

Larry was a 1962 graduate of Lakeland High School, where he played drums in the band and was in the FFA. Larry retired from the Freeport Press in 2006, where he was a press operator for 41 years.

Larry was a member of the Freeport Presbyterian Church and was a former member of the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed being outdoors, helping others, farming, and working in his garage. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, watching their sporting activities, and loved to travel and take trips with his wife, Shirley.

Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Shirley Ann Milliken Wells. They were married on Oct. 1, 1966.

Also surviving are four children; Karen (Allen) Stocker of Pataskala, Bradley (Amanda Hall) Wells of Columbus, Larry (Letisha) Wells of Freeport, Rebecca (Harlen) Smith of Freeport; 10 grandchildren, Drew (Brittany) Stocker, Sarah (Michael) Jones, Alicia (Zach) Morehead, Kacie Wells, Samantha (Kirk) Wells, Larry Wells, Jr, Kayleigh (Scott) Cunningham, Kristen (Gregory) Harper, Emma Smith, and Alayna Smith; great-grandchildren, Mercedes Morehead, Mika Morehead, Elliana Morehead, Easton Harper, Faith Harper, Dean Stocker, Avery Cunningham, and one on the way; a brother, Bob (Mary Shull) Wells of Gnadenhutten; a sister, Betty (Bob) McConnell of Tippecanoe; a brother-in-law, John (Peggy) Milliken of Bolivar; and a sister-in-law, Jean (Darrell) Romshak of Cadiz.

Russell Bowersock Sr. Russell Elsworth Bowersock, Sr., 70, of Moorefield, passed away Friday, Dec. 3, 2021 at Trinity West in Steubenville, Ohio. He was born Jan. 13, 1951 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, a son of the late Charles and Velma McCune Bowersock.

He retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years and was a truck and bus driver.

He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a brother, John Bowersock.

Surviving is his wife of 31 years, Penny Smith Bowersock, whom he married on Nov. 21, 1990; a daughter, Linda Bowersock; five sons, Russell Bowersock, Jr., Kenneth and Jessica Bowersock and family, Andrew and Dawn Bowersock and family, Anthony and Natalie Bowersock and family, and Nathaniel and Dani Bowersock and daughter; his in-laws, Willard and Helen Smith of Moorefield; siblings, Lucky Bowersock, Rose Bowersock, Ella Mae Bowersock, Mary McWilliams, and Penny Ferguson; and several grandchildren, sisters- and brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews.

Janet Coulson A devoted wife, a loving mom, and a caring grandmother, Janet Claire (Arnold) Coulson lived a life dedicated to those she loved.

Born on Dec. 26, 1932, on the family farm in Cadiz, Ohio, Janet grew up knowing the value of hard work and how to reap the rewards of an early morning caring for others — whether that be milking cows, corralling her four children, or making sure Bob had his lunch pail packed before heading to work or to the boat to get the day’s catch.

On Dec. 7, 2021, Janet went home to be with her husband of 64 years, Bob Coulson, after seven long years apart. Although Janet held many roles throughout her life — loving wife, secretary/bookkeeper at the News-Herald, baker extraordinaire, and first mate on the fishing boat — no role meant more to her than Mom. For over 70 years of her life, Janet held the title of Mom to her four children, Connie (Ross) Capers of Grove City, Ohio; John (Marsha) Coulson, of Cadiz, Ohio; Patti (Ed) Smith of LaGrange, Kentucky; and Shari (John) McNab of Pensacola Beach, Florida and St. Clairsville, Ohio; and Grandma to 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Janet always made her family her priority.

Janet was the first up in the morning and the last to go to bed at night, always making sure she had sewn the extra button on the band uniform, finished baking a special birthday cake, and making sure each member of her family had exactly what they needed for the next day. When she wasn’t caring for her family, Janet dedicated her time to serving those in the community as a member of the F.O.E. Auxillary in Cadiz, hosting kids in the backyard for fun and games, and supporting Bob and her kids in all of their endeavors.

Janet often appeared to play a supporting role to Bob, but to those who thought Bob was the boss of the family — he was — until Janet told him he wasn’t. A true picture of a loving and happy marriage, Bob and Janet spent their life raising their family, catching countless fish, traveling the country, and playing with their many grandchildren. After living many years on the farm in Cadiz, Ohio, Bob and Janet retired to Port Clinton, Ohio and Okeechobee, Florida, where they spent their golden years cherishing one another.

In addition to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Janet will be deeply missed by her brother Charles (Jeanette) Arnold of Leesburg, Florida and his family, her sistersin-law Marilyn (George) Monzula of Cadiz, Ohio, and Joan Slusarz Prasek of Chesterland, See JANET Pg.- 8

Air dispersion modeling was performed to show allowed emission levels will not cause or contribute to an exceedance of any National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS). The maximum air pollutant concentrations and averaging periods that are expected from this facility are the following in micrograms per cubic meter: 4.83 nitrogen dioxide 1-hour, 0.99 nitrogen dioxide annual, 335.39 carbon monoxide 1-hour, 145.68 carbon monoxide annual, 1.08 PM2.5 24-hour, 0.11 PM2.5 annual, 1.41 PM10 24-hour, 0.11 PM10 annual, 1.66 SO2 1-hour, 1.55 SO2 3-hour, 0.46 SO2 24-hour and 0.04 SO2 annual. Air dispersion modeling was also performed to evaluate potentially toxic compounds and passed all toxic modeling thresholds.

All other pollutants were too small to model.

By Esther McCoy On Dec. 6, Lamont and I trudged along County Road 20, putting up small American flags in front of homes in remembrance of the Dec. 7, 1941, terrible disaster — the bombing of Pearl Harbor. There were 2,390 service members killed and many times that amount of people back home mourning their demise that day and many days after it was told.

A story was written about how a young military member was killed on Dec. 7, 1941. The plans for his week ended that day. He had planned to celebrate his 20th birthday that occurred the day before on Dec. 6. Martin Anthony Gere did not get to return home to his parents to start a life.

Lamont and I thought for all the young boys, girls, and top military members who lost their lives that we could remember them by flying flags. There have been travelers and those who live on County Road 20 commenting on the flags as well. We hope they notice and maybe more people will do it. I know that the Pesta Farm has a fence running along their pasture, and it is decorated with many flags for any military holiday, and I thank them.

Did you get to Steubenville to see the nutcrackers lined up on the city streets and at the Nutcracker Village within the fort yet?

I thought it was wonderful that Charlie Bane, who portrayed the jolly old fellow for many years throughout Jefferson and likely more counties, was honored for his good work for many years.

He died this past fall and will be missed by those big and small.

He had his ho ho ho’s down to perfection. I got to sit on his lap at work once when there was no room for me in a crowd shot, so I got the most lovely seat in the house, his lap.

My niece, Shaylor McHugh, had a birthday on Dec. 7, a day to remember for a lifetime. Let’s hope that history still matters.

Bye for now; I am down to No. 5 on my to-do list for Christmas. Outside decorations are done, and the windows always get washed at this time of the year. I finally pulled the dead flowers from the flower bed. I have been writing Christmas cards as they come in because I know I will get a bit stressed if I try to do them all at once. And I am trying to keep ahead of the cookie baking as I know that Lamont likes to keep lowering it.

They packed three boxes each for all 13 recipients, and they’ll be shipped to locations including Fort Campbell, Fort Riley, Cedarville, and Sherwood Forest. They will also go to service members stationed overseas in Germany and Saudi Arabia. Encino Energy is paying the shipping costs for sending the boxes throughout the nation and abroad.

Sarah Snyder of the Military Support Group stressed that they are always willing to support more service members. “We always ask: If you have a family member deployed, let us know.”

Because Ohio is known as a quality deer hunting state, many out-of-state hunters travel here during the season. The top five states for purchasing a nonresident hunting license in Ohio include Pennsylvania (7,929 licenses sold), Michigan (5,533), West Virginia (3,898), North Carolina (3,740), and New York (3,597).

Deer hunting participation remains high for all hunters, with 383,770 deer hunting permits sold or issued through Sunday, Dec. 5.
