Drug cases, B & E on criminal court docket

The Harrison County Court of Common Pleas saw several drug-related cases and two cases of breaking and entering when they convened on Jan. 18 for criminal court.

Floyd E. Burge appeared via video from Jefferson County with two cases against him, both for aggravated possession of drugs. Burge agreed to take the 24 months incarceration offered by the state and asked Judge Hervey whether rehab might be an option. The judge said this would be determined later. Burge asked whether he could go back to Harrison County to visit his mother before serving his time; Hervey had to explain to him that it was not possible with a prison sentence.

Also in court on a drug charge was Donny Hanshaw, who had been in jail for aggravated possession of drugs since Dec. 10.

FREEPORT — At last Wednesday’s Freeport council meeting, members voted on an ordinance to keep solicitor Brett Hillyer for another year.

And as they moved through the regular session, council members also approved the budget, same as last year, signed a contract with the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department, and accepted the secretary and treasurer’s report.

Also, new water superintendent Jason Tubaugh is working on getting the water plant up to date. Water bills have been sent out and are due on Feb. 14; they can be paid at the town hall.

The council also named the winners of last month’s Christmas light contest: Dave Tidrick came in first and won $100, the Shawn Toland residence came in second and received $50, and Amanda Brook won $25 for third place.

Sedgmer said he couldn’t remember seeing this kind of snowfall during his work on the highways, though he recalled that it used to be more common when he was a child. He recalled the winter of 1993 as especially memorable.

That was the year of the “superstorm” blizzard that buried southeastern Ohio in nearly two feet of snow and shut down most of the east coast for days.

Thanks to the efforts of road and highway workers across the county, as well as the forethought of village councils to procure plenty of salt in advance, county residents have been able to get out and travel safely, and schools have been able to reopen as well.

CADIZ—The East Ohio Bowling League (EOBL) will be entertaining a 10-game “Baker tournament” at the J R Bowling Lanes in New Athens, Ohio on Jan. 24-26. The event will last three days, and each team, both boys and girls, will roll 10 Baker games.

A Baker game in bowling occurs when multiple bowlers combine for a game.

Usually, bowler No. 1 rolls the initial frame.

Beside the first frame, they also roll the last frame. The No. 1 bowler — or leadoff bowler — is typically the most consistent bowler on the team. Bowling first and last gives the other team members a feel for the lanes.

Teams scheduled to bowl on Monday, Jan. 24 at 3:30 p.m. include Buckeye Local, Linsly, and Bridgeport. Teams scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 3:30 p.m. include Wheeling Central, Monroe Central, Beallsville, and St. John. The teams bowling on Tuesday, Jan. 25 in the 6:30 p.m. slot are Weir, St. Clairsville, and Union Local. Bowerston council addresses pay increases

BOWERSTON — At Bowerston’s January council meeting, President Paula Beamer recommended a $20-per-month raise for fiscal officer Heidi Trice. Beamer added that she would like the increase to go into effect on March 1, one year from when Trice received her last raise.

In addition, Beamer said she had researched the hours and pay over the past several months for the work of Janeen Scott for both utility clerk duties and income tax administration.

Beamer told the council that she would like to see the salary for both positions at $650 per month; she feels this would be more stable for the village’s financial planning. Scott is currently being reimbursed for hours over 40 for utility clerk duties.

After a brief discussion, the council unanimously agreed to the salary adjustments, retroactive to the beginning of the current pay period.

Also regarding pay increases, the Bowerston council discussed a pay rate increase for the mayor, which would go into effect in 2024. However, no action was taken.

Additionally, Bowerston set their committees for the year, approved Unified Bank as their official financial institution for 2022, and adopted the newest edition of the Ohio Basic

Code for village governing laws.

Moving through regular business, Bowerston also confirmed their meeting times for 2022: the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Bowerston village council will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at the community park building.

Orders being accepted for new veteran banners

SMITHFIELD — The village of Smithfield will have veterans’ banners lining Main Street later this year after a campaign to order banners in honor of the hometown vets has been conducted by the Smithfield Beautification Committee.

The cost of each banner and the hardware to hang it is $120 and must be ordered at Mizer Printing in Cadiz; payment must be made at the time of the order. A picture of the veteran (if desired) must be presented to Mizer at the time of purchase (a copy will be made and photo returned). The creation of the banners will also require other information: a veteran’s name, branches of services, wars fought, and dates of service.

The order deadline for this year’s display is April 15, 2022. Customers can take the information and make payments to Mizer Printing & Graphics (160 Cunningham Avenue, Suite 3 in Cadiz, Ohio 43907) at any time until the deadline date. Then the Beautification Committee will pick up completed banners from Mizer and hang them up for Memorial Day. High rate of COVID Former police officer transmission continues in sentenced on drug charges Harrison County

As of the morning of January 20, 2022, Harrison County reported 299 cases of COVID-19. Given that the county population stands at around 14,500 as per the last census, this means 2% of the entire county population currently counts as an “active case.”

In addition, the county is very close to hitting 2,900 total cumulative cases since the start of the pandemic — meaning that 20% of the population will have tested positive at some point since it began.

County health administrator Garen Rhome pointed out that these numbers account only for reported cases. “Particularly in the past months when take-home tests became prevalent, the number of new cases is underreported,” he said. “Then there are people who test and don’t report and those who never tested.”

As of Wednesday, Jan. 19, there were

still no confirmed omicron cases in the county.

However, as Rhome explained, the present rate of spread tells us the virus is more transmissible than it has been.

“The concern is now: watch to see if those cases translate into hospitalizations,’’ Rhome said. The good news is that the rate of hospitalizations in Ohio as a whole has begun to decline since it peaked at an all-time high on January 10. “They could turn around and go the other way,” Rhome said. “But we hope not.”

Rhome also explained that dealing with COVID has strengthened partnerships in the community. The health department already worked closely with nonprofits, child care, and other organizations, but those ties have grown stronger. The county health department is also doing its community health assessment right now. County residents can contribute to this effort by completing the survey that is available online. The department will also be getting paper copies of these surveys to people.

“We’re trying to create a road map to what needs to be addressed, the health problems in the county,” Rhome said.

New children’s librarian planning educational programs at Puskarich

The Puskarich Public Library has a new children’s librarian. Karli Ray took on the position in October 2021 after a brief period of training with the previous children’s librarian.

For Ray, working as a children’s librarian is a chance to make more educational opportunities available to the community.

A West Liberty University grad, Ray majored in community education.

Her hope was to find work that could keep her involved in education but outside the school systems. Ray’s sister had already worked in the public library while she was in high school, and when she found they were looking for a new children’s librarian, she said she knew just the person for the job — so the library reached out to Ray.

The Puskarich Public Library branches have long been a vital part of the Harrison County community with books, programming, and free services for individuals of all ages.

Having free children’s educational programs in local library branches is especially valuable for young people eager to learn more about their interests and for parents interested in getting their younger children off to a strong start in literacy.

One of the library’s most popular programs for children is its storytime sessions.

They were originally slated to resume in January but have been pushed back to February because of the rise in COVID-19 numbers. Storytime is organized for three different age groups: toddlers on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., preschoolers on Wednesdays at 11, and “Shake, Rattle and Read” for newborns through 18 months. Storytime has a different theme for each week. Ray said she is especially looking forward to their “Beauty and the Beast” themed week, scheduled for March 16. And the library will even be collaborating with the school’s theater department since that’s the show they’re rehearsing for.

Other attractions for area children include the Lego and Wild Kratts Clubs. They’ll be starting a Harry Potter Club soon, too, for a slightly older reading crowd. Ray said they are also working to create programs for teens. Other upcoming events include a caricature artist on Feb. 17 and a “Greatest Showman” movie night on Feb. 25.

Ray talked about how local libraries have become especially important during the pandemic, as they can make free at-home tests available to the public. But also, the library is “something that has stability when everything else is unstable.”

Ohio’s deer hunters have successful muzzleloader season

COLUMBUS — Ohio hunters completed the 2022 muzzleloader season with 12,141 deer checked from Saturday, Jan. 8 to Tuesday, Jan. 11, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. Over the past three years, an average of 11,501 deer were taken with a muzzleloader during the same four-day period.

The top 10 counties for deer harvested during the 2022 muzzleloader season include Coshocton (467), Tuscarawas (455), Guernsey (386), Ashtabula (363), Muskingum (356), Knox (344), Meigs (338), Carroll (322), Licking (316), and Harrison (301). Coshocton County was tops in the state during the 2021 muzzleloader season with 367 deer checked, while hunters took 9,708 deer statewide.

“Ohio offers many opportunities for deer hunters to get into the field, and that includes the recently concluded muzzleloader season,” said Division of Wildlife Chief Kendra Wecker. “It’s been a successful season for many hunters. All deer harvested in Ohio are required to be entered into the Division of Wildlife’s game check system. The data collected in the system is used to manage Ohio’s deer herd for sustainable populations into the future.”

Harvest records show that during the 2022 muzzleloader season, hunters took 3,333 bucks (27% of deer taken), 7,239 does (60%), and 1,282 button bucks (11%). Bucks with shed antlers and bucks with antlers less than

3 inches long accounted for 287 deer or 2% of the harvest.

During the nine days of gun hunting, 79,805 deer were taken. In addition, young hunters harvested 7,634 deer during the twoday youth gun season. With about a month remaining to hunt with archery equipment, Ohio hunters have checked 186,426 deer across all seasons. Ohio’s archery season is open until Sunday, Feb. 6.

Deer hunting occurs in all 88 counties, and Ohio hunters have purchased 394,059 deer permits through Tuesday, Jan. 11. Hotspots for deer hunting are found mostly in the eastern regions, including Ashtabula, Coshocton, Tuscarawas, Muskingum, Guernsey, and Knox counties.

ºOhio ranks fifth nationally in resident hunters and 11th in the number of jobs associated with hunting-related industries.

Hunting generates more than $853 million in Ohio through the sale of equipment, fuel, food, lodging, and more, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Hunting in America: An Economic Force for Conservation publication.

Former law enforcement officer Steven Hardy pleaded guilty on Jan. 18 in the Harrison County Court of Common Pleas to possession of cocaine and possession of drugs, both fifthdegree felonies. Initially, he was also accused of tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony, but the charge was dismissed. Hardy’s case was heard by Judge T. Shawn Hervey with attorney Donovan Hill as the defense. Andrea Boyd, associate assistant attorney general, appeared on behalf of the state via video.

In April 2021, Boyd explained, Hardy was involved in a routine confiscation of drugs from an automobile following a crash in Jewett.

The next day he was found unconscious in his vehicle with a packet of fentanyl in his pocket.

Other narcotics matching the description of the substances found on the crash scene were also discovered in his personal vehicle. He had no explanation as to why they were there.

In court, Hervey explained to the defendant the possible sentences he could receive for

felony charges. A prison sentence, he said, was one possibility but not mandatory; Hardy could also theoretically receive communitybased control.

Boyd told the court that she didn’t think prison would be appropriate in Hardy’s case. “But he should be evaluated for substance abuse treatment,” she said.

Ohio Contractors Association gives to Blessings in a Backpack

The Ohio Contractors Association Eastern Division presented a $7,000 donation to the “Blessings in a Backpack” program in the Harrison Hills City School District. This is their second year of supporting the program.

The Blessings in a Backpack committee currently sends home approximately 250 food bags every Friday, including some students at the Harrison County Board of Developmental Disabilities. The food bags are provided to students when there’s a chance of a food shortage in the home on weekends. Each bag contains two individual servings of cereal, noodles, and fruits, along with filling snacks (10 items in total).

Bags are packed biweekly and distributed by staff members on Fridays. This is the sixth year of the

program.

The program relies totally on donations and grants. The cost of one student for a school year can run over $120. Some other donations for the school year came from the Deersville Methodist Church, Asbury Chapel, Nottingham Church, Cadiz Presbyterian Church, many private local donors and LLCs, Clark-Kirkland-Barr Funeral Home, Cadiz Women’s Civic Club, in-memory donations, family donations, Hopedale Legion, Southeast Security, Appalachia of Ohio grants and donations, South Central Power, and Gulfport Energy. The Cadiz American Legion has sponsored two fundraisers in the past as well.

Ohio’s proposed fall 2022 wild turkey hunting season reduced by 3 weeks

COLUMBUS — Biologists with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife recommended a major reduction to the 2022 fall wild turkey hunting season during the Ohio Wildlife Council’s regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 12. Under the proposal received Wednesday, Ohio’s fall wild turkey season would begin on Saturday, Oct. 15 and conclude on Sunday, Nov. 13, a reduction of three weeks when compared to the 2021 fall season.

The fall turkey hunting proposal was part of a larger package of season dates that were presented to the Ohio Wildlife Council and includes small game, waterfowl, and furbearers.

Wild turkey populations have declined throughout Ohio following several years of below-average reproductive success. The proposed reduction in the fall hunting season length goes along with a reduced limit for the spring season. Ohio hunters harvested 695 wild turkeys during the 2021 fall season that was open in 70 of 88 counties. The average harvest during the three previous years (2018 to 2020) was 1,079 birds.

Cattle school starting in Feb.

Whether you are a beginner or experienced producer (or somewhere in between), there is something for you at the Jefferson and Harrison Cattle Management School. This year’s cattle school will consist of three Zoom sessions, each running from 7–9 p.m.

According to Erika Lyon, Ohio State University Extension educator, the school will be a great opportunity to learn about the latest in production and management for producers in the tri-state area. “The cattle management school this year will cover sessions on bloodborne pathogens, biosecurity, apps for producers and even an advanced class on forage genetics,” stated Lyon.

There is no cost to attend the Zoom webinars, but preregistration is required. The schedule for the 2022 Jefferson and Harrison Cattle Management School is as follows: Monday, Feb. 7: Managing Bloodborne Pathogens in Cattle Guest Speaker: Dr. Tim McDermott, DVM, extension educator with Ohio State University Extension. This session will cover pathogens such as Pasteurella and some of the vector-borne diseases transmitted by ticks to livestock. A discussion on the Asian long-horned tick will also be included. CADIZ — It took overtime, but the Beaver Local Beavers completed the season sweep of the Harrison Central Huskies last Friday night in Cadiz. Impressive ball movement and efficient guard play fueled the Beavers as they finished off the Huskies 7371 in overtime — and, literally, with no time left on the clock. The Beavers had the final possession, and a shot from the outside found no rim as time ticked away, but it did find an opportunistic Owen Bzinak waiting under the hoop. A quick putback at the horn gave way to a court rush from the visiting bench. Bzinak had pulled off the most exciting moment in sports: the buzzer-beater. An exclamation point — if there ever were one — capped off an alltime instant classic on the campus of Harrison Central High School.

All of this excitement came after the Huskies had already rallied late in the game to force an extra four minutes of free basketball.

With the regulation clock nearing the 1:30 mark, the Huskies were trailing 53-45, and things were looking rather grim. That’s when the gym came to life as the Harrison group was able to outpace the Beavers 12-4 in the final 90 seconds, landing the fourth-quarter tally at 57-57.

Jace Madzia led the late charge, dropping nine of his team-high 25 points during the thrilling comeback surge. A Joenus Jones triple from the corner cut the Beavers lead to 57-55 with under 30 seconds remaining. That sequence then gave way to a forced turnover from Hayden Cassidy and a pitch to Jonathan Vermillion, who then found Madzia on the block to knot the game at 57. The Beavers had a chance at the end of regulation but couldn’t seal the deal.

The Huskies have played in some close games this season and, up until last Friday, had enjoyed being on the right side of those matchups come the final buzzer. This season, two victories over Indian Creek have come by

one point, 59-58 and 43-42. Another bout with Steubenville in the Buckeye Eight Challenge ended with Harrison on top 46-45. So in other words, the Huskies’ room for error in these tight ball games had already been tested.

The two teams exchanged the lead multiple times in the overtime period, and as things progressed, it certainly turned into one of those “whoever has the ball last” situations.

It was 70-67 in favor of Harrison with roughly 40 seconds left on the clock, but Beaver Local’s Sky Pappas was the ultimate difference-maker.

Both of his overtime trey balls tied the score when it seemed the Beavers were going to fall off pace. Pappas dropped a game-high 27 in total.

Pappas and Madzia exchanged free throws to tie it at 71-all. With 11 seconds remaining, the Huskies had a chance to go ahead but couldn’t connect. As a result, another game-closing possession was in hand for the Beavers, and the second time around, they didn’t fail to capitalize.

Cassidy turned in 21 points to complement Madzia’s 25-point night.

Vermillion and Jones each finished with nine marks. Mykel Quito was the Huskies’ lone remaining scorer, wrapping up his evening with seven tallies.

WINTERSVILLE — As the cold temperatures outside gave way to a slightly warmer rain last Thursday, the Lady Huskies precipitated a cold raining of points inside the Wintersville gymnasium on their way to a sound 63-37 victory over the Indian Creek host.

Just as in recent fashion, Harrison Central opened the contest on Thursday evening with an offensive onslaught. They were so dominant that their offensive performance was only upstaged by their stingy defense.

While the Redskins were determined to work the ball inside, the Husky defense reciprocated the action by registering continuous takeaway points. True to his game plan and sagacity, coach Nick Yourkovich refused to call off the “dawgs.”

McKayla Dunkle, Mackenzie Harbold, Maddy Butler, Emma Fischer, and Angi Ferri are Huskies’ front five, and they were as aggressive as a bear to fresh honey. If ball harassment in basketball was a felony, Harrison’s front five could have been breaking rocks at Pelican Bay by Friday morning.

Following the first eight minutes of the contest, the Huskies produced a team lead of 24-11. In point production, 8 of the 11 Redskins first-quarter points would be earned at the charity stripe; that point production reflected Harrison’s scrappy defense.

In contrast, Harrison

produced an offensive showing of 23 points (24 points minus one free throw), compared to the Redskins’ three earned from the field.

Nineteen more points found the bottom of the net for Harrison in the second period. The train began to leave the station, and it towed a 22-point Harrison lead (43-21) as the horn sounded for the break.

Elizabeth Vargo Elizabeth Vargo, 95, of Cadiz, Ohio, passed away on Friday, Jan. 14, 2022, at the Harrison County Home. She was born June 25, 1926, a daughter of the late Pete and Rose Mrus Rock.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Vargo Jr.; sister, Mildred Rock; and brothers: Franklin, Pete, Mike, George, and Evan Rock.

Elizabeth is survived by her children, Jeffrey Vargo of Maryland, David (Holly) Vargo of New Athens, and Sharon Vargo of Cadiz; sisters, Annie Zullo of Hopedale, Ohio and Ruth Rock of Wintersville, Ohio; grandchildren Seth (Taylor) Vargo and Ally Vargo; stepgrandchildren Hunter (Alyssa) Yarnell and Tanner Yarnell; and step greatgranddaughter Dalilah.

Friends are invited to a graveside service on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022 at 11 a.m. at the Cadiz Union Cemetery. A memorial visitation is planned for a later date. Commissioner Paul Coffland went through the recitals of Agreement 5-22 between The Village Network and the Department of Job and Family Services, and it will go into effect on Jan. 19, 2022 and run through Jan. 18, 2023.

The commissioners passed the agreement.

As for the second agreement, Agreement 6-22, Knight explained it focused on the WIOA Youth Formula Program within the county and the Jefferson County Community Action Council. In short, the Jefferson County CAC does not have enough Harrison County funding for WIOA. But Knight followed up with hopeful news: “Because we have such an excellent workforce area, and the counties support each other, one of the other counties in our workforce area gave us $70,000 that they did not expect to use so that we can continue to serve the youth that CAC has enrolled.” Simply, Agreement 6-22 modified the contract with the CAC to account for the $70,00 addition to the funding, from $131,786 to $201,786.

The motion was approved, and the transfer will begin on Jan. 19.

Meeting Cancellation The Jan. 18 regular meeting of the Mental Health and Recovery Board was canceled due to inclement weather. It has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 25 at the Board Office (99 N. Sugar Street, St. Clairsville, Ohio).

End of an Era: Duncanwood

By Susan Adams Information comes from the book “The Goodyear Mine and the Families that Lived at Duncanwood, Short Creek Twp, Harrison CO OH” from Lori and Glen Baker. At one time, Duncanwood (a proud mining town) was the second largest town in Harrison County with a 1,300 population, and it flourished for about 30 years. There was a group of houses built for the workers at the mine, a post office, a school, a company store, a pool hall, a power plant, churches, and more. There were 235 houses, including the houses of the miners who were employed by the Short Creek Coal Company, the Somers Mine, and the Goodyear Mine. It also contained the largest supply store in Harrison County: the Shortcreek Supply Company. Additionally, there were 15 nationalities represented there: Hungarians, Belgians, Russians, English, Welsh, German, Serbians, Italians, Polish, Slavs, Greeks, Turks, Montenegrins, Austrians, and Bohemians. In 1932, troops were called to keep order in Duncanwood because men moved in to unionize the mine. When the mine closed, 50 families were living in Duncanwood. The Hanna Coal Company bought the property, and they ordered the town be removed for various reasons. Everything disappeared when the mine closed in 1949. This picture (bottom) is from October 1949, just before they started tearing down the structures. Here’s one of the closing remarks from the men walking through town: “This town’s been here a long time, and then — like a shot in the dark — it’s gone. Because after all, what I came here to see, I saw. It was Reverend Yates turnin’ the key in the lock of the old mission for the last time. And then kinda swaller hard because of the memories he locked out at the same time. It is a picture of industrial desolation. It is what happens when the coal and calculating hand of King Coal is waved across a community.”

CROSSWORD SUPER BOWL

If you call yourself a Christian, you are part of the body of Christ, part of Christ’s global church. The church has a nature and a mission; therefore, you have a nature and a mission. The DNA of one’s nature determines the direction of the mission. If the nature of Christ’s church is altered from its original intent, it will drastically affect the church’s mission. In the realm of space travel, if the launch of a rocket is off by only one degree, that vehicle will be millions of miles off course by the time it was scheduled to reach its intended destination. Such is the nature of the church and the believer. If we use scripture as a roadmap for both nature and mission, and not just the latest pop trends, we will succeed at both. Acts 2:42 (NRSV) records the essential key to growth, “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” The growth came from being taught sound doctrine known as the apostles’ teaching and Word-centered prayer. The apostle Paul would later write in 2 Timothy 4:3, “For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires.” The early church grew rapidly because they got all their information from one source: the apostles’ teaching. As the old saying goes, they were all singing from the same hymnal. Isn’t that the key to growth in any successful organization, be it Christian or secular? If the orders come from competing headquarters (the apostles teaching vs. the spirit of the age), factions will arise — something the apostle Paul strictly forbade. Why are many denominational churches shrinking in membership? The answer is twofold: the nature/DNA has been altered from God’s original intent, so now the mission is a mushy mix of whatever feels right for the times we live in.

As his church, our nature is to love the Lord and his word; our mission is to spread his love and his word. When we return to his original intent, the church and the world will be on course, and that will be some welcomed good news.

It is always a grind to make it through the long stretch of winter after the fun of the holidays is over…

Yes, there is often a letdown after the holidays when the packages quit coming, and there is no more excitement of “What’s under the tree?” or “What did I order?” I find it’s a good time to go through toys or cupboards and get rid of whatever you have accumulated over the year that you have no use for. It’s fun to donate to organizations that take items gently used.

Consider Helping Hands or the Wellspring Pregnancy Center in Cadiz. Involve your children in this process because sometimes it’s not as hard for them to give away when they realize they are helping someone else. This can take quite a few weeks if you can’t find a chunk of time to

do it all at once. Otherwise, I’d check with the Chamber of Commerce in your area.

They usually have information on activities that are coming up and places to visit in your area. There are a lot of opportunities that are around us that we never take advantage of. Don’t allow yourself to feel discouraged; you can always look for someone in need that you or your family can lend a hand in helping, whether it’s a meal or a decluttering project! There is always an opportunity; we just have to look for it. Before you know it, you’ll see those spring flowers sticking up through the snow and know there is a whole other set of activities to keep us busy for another season in our lives. Go enjoy the day God has given you!

The Conotton Valley basketball team had all their games canceled or postponed the past week. Due to injuries, the girls’ team had to cancel all of their games for the rest of the season.

The Hall of Fame game is Saturday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m., followed by the banquet to honor those chosen to enter the Hall.

Thanks to all of those who plowed snow during the recent snowstorm so residents could get out of their homes.

Noah Strickler (rural Deersville) earned his “Life Rank in scouts a couple of weeks ago. He has now been awarded his Life Rank patch. Parents Tom and Amy Strickler are SO PROUD of Noah and all his hard work, dedication, and achievements. Scouts is very important to him, and he makes it a priority. His next rank is Eagle.

For his Eagle Scout project, he would like to put a bench in the memory garden of the church.

On Monday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m., the WoodyPaul Blanket Mission will meet at the Deersville UM Church fellowship hall to make blankets for those in need of comfort. A covered dish lunch will follow. Anyone who can tie a knot is welcome.

It is beautiful, but I know it is hazardous for those who need a sidewalk cleaned to get out.

Lamont went out to clean ours and was told to stop doing the hard labor by Bob Petrozzi, our neighbor. He has a plow that could do the job in a jiffy. Thank you, Bob. Edison High School’s winter semiformal dance originally scheduled for Jan. 16 was postponed until Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. The winter formals are a nice event after Christmas when there is nothing to do in the way of holidays, but weather can interfere.

The Sudvary family is helping with a benefit for the Humane Society of Harrison County. A donation goes toward the needs of the animals in the name of Betty White, a great humanitarian.

There is voting at the Tractor Supply in Cadiz.

The Sudvaries even make homemade treats for the animals.

The large American flag flew free and high at the Jefferson County Veteran’s Memorial Park for one day when Barry Bardone, an officer for the group, put it up at the end of the week. It might have gotten frozen when the snow started on Sunday. The park is such a calming place to visit. Many gave their lives for the benefit of our country and are named on bricks; others are remembered for their service and returned home. Some of those military members are or were part of the park group. Go visit it sometime and wander around looking at all the bricks with the name and rank of a military person.

They go back to past wars as well.

I had to make a trip to the great used book store on Fourth Street in Steubenville: Book Marx, just before they removed all the nutcrackers that lined Third, Fourth, and Market Streets. These are almost live-sized individuals portraying something the person was known for. I was happy to see the one designed for Walter “Wally” Jancura, showing him with his beloved accordion. He was really a polka master, and we all enjoyed his holiday dances at the Bradley Bohemian Hall and the records we could purchase to keep up the happy music at home.

His family arranged this and kept it a secret until they could bring him to the park to see it. There was another nutcracker of John Parkinson, an Adena farmer who was involved with 4-H, the Farm Bureau, and many activities that pertained to farming. There was a wonderful courthouse light show that shone each Friday and Saturday until Christmas. Charlie Bane was honored for portraying Santa Claus through the area for years as well. He passed away several weeks before Christmas but appeared at the Brilliant parade when he gave his jolly “H.O., H.O.’s.”

His passing is a sad situation for children, but I am sure he is remembered by many.

We feel honored to have a lady doctor in Lamont’s family tree. She is Dr. Jane Semple, MA ND, of Olmsted Township, Ohio. She says that getting vaccinated can have COVID side effects, but the chance of dying is lessened as vaccinated people can still end up in the I.C.U. She said to consider adding a dose of vitamin C for a few days before and after vaccinating, such as a vitamin C chewable, Vitamin C with citrus bioflavonoids, or 100 milligrams of vitamin C. I hope everyone is feeling well now. Eat healthy, get rest, and exercise in the best way possible — in the house or if you are hearty, you can get out and walk in the deep snow.

Lucas Thomas wins OVAC Jr. high Lady Huskies fall short to Barnesville wrestling championship

Last Thursday at home, the junior high Lady Huskies took on the Barnesville Shamrocks. It was a challenge for both teams as the Shamrocks were very talented.

The seventh-grade girls started well, only trailing at the end of the first quarter 7-4. But the Shamrocks began clicking in the second quarter and posted a 15-7 halftime score. The Huskies were unable to regain momentum and ended the game with a final score of 20-10.

The eighth-grade Lady Huskies faced a more aggressive defensive force, which provided few scoring opportunities for the girls — especially in the first half with a 17-2 halftime score. The Huskies’ offense improved in the second half, but the game concluded with a 31-9 final score.

Husky bowling sweeps Wheeling Central

CADIZ — Last Wednesday evening, the Cadiz's J D Bowling Lanes was the location for an all-out bowling extravaganza, as the Husky bowling teams made a clean sweep of the visiting Wheeling Catholic Central Maroon Knights. Harrison Central's final scores put up a distance of hundreds of pins, leaving no doubt that J D Lanes was the "Husky House."

The Husky boys' team stepped up first and set the stage for the team's winning results, a 1,9371,318 scoring victory. The high scorers for the boys were Chad Viers with a 231 and 166 effort, John Gray at 205, and Kobie Hennis at 193.

And the Huskies rolled by the opponents with a 1,455-1,228 score in the girls'

half of the night. In that showing, the high scorers were Aleyna Runevitch, putting on another memorable season with the Huskies, with a 160, and Lauren Best chipped in a 138 performance.

To say the least, coach Bobbi Parkinson was ecstatic about the night's results. She is fully engraved in the team's performances and constantly supports and heralds their efforts — as a coach should. "It was another good night for our Huskie bowlers," Parkinson said. "I look forward to our next outing with anticipation to our constant winning efforts! We will be in action very soon at the St. Clair Lanes vs.

Martins Ferry. Both varsity teams, junior varsity boys, and girls will bowl for averages. The bus leaves at 2:30 from the high school. As always: Go Huskies!"

JEWETT — Last Saturday, the Jewett Wildcat Community Center opened its doors to the 2022 Biddy Basketball season. The Center has now made some changes to the participation ages for the program. This year, the youth basketball program will include children from the second and third grades. The two new age brackets are expected to increase interest while giving the younger children a jumpstart on their basketball careers.

This past week’s eight-team schedule and scores included the Bulls vs. Knights 24-18 (Bulls win), Lakers vs. Warriors 35-19, Spartans vs. Bandits 18-10, and Wildcats vs. Mustangs 28-4. J D Lanes Bowling has been providing activities and entertainment to families in the Cadiz area since it opened in 1973.

With 10 lanes for bowling — as well as food and other games — the venue provides an array of options for the whole family. Not all area residents might be aware that the bowling alley is situated right in the middle of the village (it’s not visible from the main road), but many longtime patrons have enjoyed relaxation and recreation there for years. As owner Jerry Cochran shared, “Some of the bowlers have been coming here since 1973 and never stopped coming until they got too old.” And the venue is popular with bowling leagues as well.

The 106-pound Sampson found himself in the consolation brackets in Round Three, where he had to battle back after the defeat to make it to the finals. But he was able to secure two victories to get himself into Day Three action. Sampson pinned Union Local’s Gavin Bolock in 54 seconds and won by a 4-2 decision against University’s Brody Emery. On Saturday, Sampson was unable to get the win against Zander Ward (JM) in a 2-0 decision.

The loss dropped Sampson into the seventh vs. eighth-place matchup, where Mason Simms (Well) won by fall in 1:31, leaving him with the eighth-place finish.

THE HARRISON County CIC meets monthly on the second Tuesday of the month

Back when the bowling alley opened, the technology for scoring was a little less sophisticated than it is today. Players had to write their scores on a plastic sheet, and they would be projected onto a screen.

Since then, the Cochrans have made a number of changes. They added automatic scoring and bumpers and took out a wall to make the venue larger. They also put in a game room with pool tables and air hockey.

Families who head out to J D Lanes for an evening of bowling can also enjoy traditional bar foods such as burgers, chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, and pizza. Soft drinks, wine coolers, and beer are also available. Sometimes Leslie Cochran even makes Italian sausage or meatballs to serve to guests.

Avid bowlers can not only enjoy playing and practicing their game at J D Lanes; they can also purchase bowling equipment such as balls, bags, and gloves. And beginners can always stop in and try their hand at bowling for the first time in a relaxing, comfortable environment.

Jerry Cochran told the News-Herald that though they lost some customers during the COVID-19 pandemic, they took a number of precautions; he feels they are doing well. “I feel like people aren’t afraid to walk in. The place is clean. We sanitize as much as we can. And the food’s good, and there are friendly people who work here.”

Though J D Lanes shuts its doors every summer, from May 1 to mid-August, it offers plenty of fun for the whole family throughout the school year. During the fall, winter, and spring, the bowling alley is open Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 to 10 p.m., Friday from 5:30 to midnight or after, and Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight or after.

On Sunday, they are open from 4:30-10 or later. They are closed on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Valentine Project ‘making our world kinder one child at a time’

JEWETT — This year, you can make a child’s Valentine’s Day happier by helping those affected by a serious diagnosis. The “Will you be my Valentine?” program looks to do just that. And this year’s theme is “Making our World Kinder One Child at a Time.”

Sara Taggart, a local volunteer and involved parent, is helping spearhead the Valentine Project in Harrison County. Taggart has been handing out flyers for the Project, and each features a handy QR code that any generous individual can use to access the Valentine Project’s site to make donations. The QR scan will take you to a page that offers the option for “New Valentine Registration.” Then from there, you can “Choose a Child” view the list of kids waiting for a Valentine. And at that point, you can select as many children as desired. Then the Valentine Project will send the gifts on your behalf. Those who would prefer to go to the site directly can visit www. thevalentineproject.org. As Taggart informed, “There is a need for at least 470 children that have not yet been identified as recipients of intended valentines.”

And Taggart also had this to say about the Valentine Project: “Imagine the smile on a sweet child’s face when a package brimming with toys and treats is delivered to their doorstep for Valentine’s Day. Now picture that same precious child in a hospital bed, undergoing yet another treatment for the cancer that is ravaging their young body or the chronic disease they’ll live with for the rest of their life. The first image, a simple joy of childhood, is what The Valentine Project focuses on. We know that when a child receives a serious diagnosis, life is never quite the same for the entire family, so we work to make sure the whole family still has plenty of reasons to smile. The Valentine Project’s mission is to spread love, hope, and joy to children affected by pediatric cancer or chronic illness and their families. DEPARTMENT COMPLAINTS January 3. Officers were called in a case of animal cruelty. Peggy Mason, of 336 St. Clair Avenue, Cadiz, was keeping several dogs in extreme squalor. They were living in their own feces and urine, with no food or water.

In total there were three dogs, and six puppies, two of which were dead. Volunteers were found to take the dogs temporarily.

January 7. Tad Guzman Reyers, 20, of 697 Country Club Road, Lot 5, was arrested for domestic violence after assaulting his victim, supposedly to prevent her from leaving the house.

The victim was found with marks on her body, and also complained of head pain.

January 9. Richard Kyle Furmanski, 33, of 202 S. Main Street, Cadiz, was taken into custody after being caught on surveillance as the driver of a stolen vehicle, which he had tried and failed to disguise with green spray paint. Furmanski claimed he was high on meth and trying to escape from someone assaulting him.

SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT THEFTS January 9. A burglary and theft were reported at a Stringtown Road, Freeport address. The victim stated that they suspected several known drug users in the community, Kyle Kyle Furmanksi one of them.

COMPLAINTS January 11. Kala S. Canterbury, 29, PO Box 113 Dingess, WV, arrested for an OVI and driving with an open container, after she was unable to pass the field sobriety test.

January 14. Officers were alerted to look out for a blue Honda CRV connected with

a case of trespass on a property where multiple thefts had occurred. When the vehicle was stopped, one man ran, while the others remained.
