Scio faces trash collection problems

The Scio village council discussed several of its ongoing water and sewer repair projects when they convened on Jan. 12. Now that village solicitor Jack Felgenhauer has submitted the required letter to the Ohio EPA, the council is hopeful that they will be able to get a bid out this spring for the water line project on Brown, Maple, Walnut, and Grandview Streets. Additional grant money from the H2Ohio program and the Ohio EPA might also be available for more water line projects since four streets still have lead in their water lines. But if the village wants to access these funds, they will need to get their application in

by March 2022.

The council also talked about how trash accumulates around some of the village’s homes.

Some garbage removal service providers have not been picking up as they were contracted to do. And some residents have never bothered to get a garbage removal service at all. The council members talked about whether it would be possible to arrange a village-wide garbage removal service that residents would pay for, as they do for water and sewer services. As Mayor Carpenter pointed out, “There’s no excuse for people not to throw their garbage away if they’re already paying for it.”

On the other hand, as other council members stated, people who have huge junk piles and auto parts lying around probably aren’t going to go to the effort of throwing their junk out, even if the provided cans could accommodate their trash accumulation.

Commissioners pass pair of sheriff’s resolutions

Sheriff Joe Myers briefly appeared at Wednesday’s commissioners’ meeting to go over a couple of business topics. The first item on the sheriff’s list included dealings with the Monroe County Jail. In years past, the Harrison County jail had an agreement to use Monroe County’s facility in the case of holding cell overflow. So Myers’ first bullet point brought forth a renewal of the same agreement that would re-up the deal with Monroe County. However, there was one small difference in the 2022 deal: costs. “[Item] One is the agreement with Monroe County Jail. We do use them for overflow at Monroe,” Myers began. “Monroe has raised their price — from what it’s been at $65 to $75,” Myers explained. He stated that the

contract was exactly the same as 2021, the only difference being the price increase. The commissioners passed the renewed contract, and it’ll run through 2022.

Myers’ second order of business focused on a ballot issue that missed the deadline from last November’s election. The issue — aka Resolution 6-22 — is a levy to pay for the “office of the sheriff and its employees and the operations with salaries and so forth and the equipment that’s needed for the sheriff’s office.” Myers explained that the deal alternates between a replacement and a renewal every other year. In this case, the renewal was done in 2021, so 2022 will be a replacement of the same millage rate for the levy as last year. So for 2022, like 2021, the levy that pays for the sheriff’s office and its operations will again be taxed at a one-mill rate.

Rollic sentenced in abduction case

On Jan. 11, Donald J. Rollic appeared in the Court of Common Pleas, via videoconference from Jefferson County, for his final pretrial.

Rollic was originally indicted in July 2021 on five counts: rape and kidnapping, (both firstdegree felonies), abduction (a third-degree felony), theft of a motor vehicle (a fourth-degree felony), and domestic violence (a first-degree misdemeanor). However, the indictment was amended, and the first two counts against Rollic (rape and kidnapping) were dropped.

Prosecutor Lauren Knight stated that Rollic’s victim had consented to the amended indictment but had not prepared a victim statement. The victim only asked for a nocontact order, Knight said.

Public Defender C. Adrian Pincola stated that the defendant had been given a risk assessment and was deemed to be at a very high risk of recidivism, requiring high supervision.

Given this fact, alongside Rollic’s existing criminal record, Judge T. Shawn Hervey declared that he believed a prison sentence was

appropriate. Rollic was sentenced to 24 months in prison with credit for time served. Hervey explained to the defendant that “things could have been much worse for him.”

Also appearing for a pretrial was John Walker Jr., represented by attorney Jenna Hokes. Walker was indicted for failure to register correctly as a sex offender, a fourth-degree felony. As Walker explained that he had only completed the fifth grade and had some challenges with reading and writing, Hervey took his time to explain to him what his rights were. Walker agreed to a guilty plea, and Hervey proceeded, as per the state’s recommendation, to sentence the defendant to two years community-based control with placement at the Eastern Ohio Correctional Facility and a 17-month reserve prison sentence.

The court also saw several drug-related cases, including Floyd Burge and Melissa Marker by videoconference and Sean T. Webb in the courtroom. Webb is enrolled in the intervention in lieu of conviction program and stated that he is doing well. “Keep up the good work,” Hervey told him. “You’re halfway there.”

Freeport council swears in members

Freeport village council held its first meeting of 2022 at town hall Wednesday night.

Solicitor Brett Hilyer swore in the council candidates that won the November election: Shelly Patterson, John Koch, and Orval Gossett. Mayor Larry Wells and council members Suzanne Howell and Letisha Wells were also sworn into their council seats. Currently, the Freeport council still needs to fill one more position; anyone in the village wishing to fill this seat can contact the mayor to express their interest.

Tax filing season begins Jan. 24 WASHINGTON—The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced Monday that the nation’s tax season will start on Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, when the tax agency will begin accepting and processing 2021 tax year returns.

The Jan. 24 start date for individual tax return filers will allow the IRS time over the coming weeks to do additional programming and testing that is critical to ensure that IRS systems will run smoothly this filing season and will help taxpayers claim the remainder of their Child Tax Credit and remaining stimulus funds in a timely manner when filing their 2021 returns.

The IRS anticipates that most taxpayers will receive their refund within 21 days of filing electronically, barring any issues with processing their tax return. The IRS urges electronic filing to avoid delays in processing and utilize information letters provided by the agency when filing their returns to avoid errors that can lead to delays.

Harrison one of the top counties for economic growth during pandemic

BY REBECCA BRATTEN WEISS Harrison News-Herald Reporting Journalist Harrison County was one of the top two Ohio counties for economic growth during the COVID-19 pandemic, Nick Homrighausen shared, at the Jan. 11 meeting of the county’s Community Improvement Corporation (CIC). “That’s something we’re very pleased about,” he said.

Homrighausen, who serves as executive director of the Harrison County Community and Economic Development, noted that this growth is due partially to the recent surge in the oil and gas industry but also the county’s small size. “There’s always room for improvement,” he said. “But it’s good to get

the information out there.” Homrighausen directed interested attendees to a Dec. 29 article in the Columbus Dispatch detailing Harrison County’s growth. He also shared that he’d been reelected to the Eastern Ohio Development Alliance, and the Ohio Economic Development Association.

However, the CIC devoted the bulk of its meeting time to discussing its 2021 financial statements, which are due soon. They plan to work with Charles E. Harris and Associates, the agency they worked with before. While the CIC had no complaints about the past services provided by this agency, some present were less pleased with the auditors who had recommended them. There was some concern expressed over expenses the auditors had billed them for.

Nonessential procedures postponed due to rising COVID numbers

BY REBECCA BRATTEN WEISS Harrison News-Herald Reporting Journalist Between Jan. 5 and 11, 81 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in Harrison County, health administrator Garen Rhome shared with the News-Herald.

Between the rise in cases and shorter recommended quarantine and isolation rules, the demand for tests in the area is presently outstripping supply. The county has continued to place orders for and to distribute at-home tests. Presently, there is a pause in the state’s distribution of rapid tests to libraries and health departments until they’ve been able to meet the demand for K-12 schools and other educational facilities, and the supply chain has been stabilized.

Moreover, Rhome said that Hospital Region 8, where Harrison County is located, has seen a steady increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations

since Dec. 26, 2021. Due to the steady increase in hospitalizations here and in neighboring regions, all nonessential procedures and surgeries have been postponed for hospitals in Zone 2.

Rhome explained that the hospital systems in Ohio have been divided into different zones to coordinate care and share resources for some time. However, at the start of the pandemic, health officials across the state carved out smaller hospital regions within those zones.

“The zones were established for mass surges in patients, with specific buildings designated as COVID centers, where if the hospitals in the field were full, that’s where people would go to receive care,” Rhome explained.

So far, Ohio has not needed to fall back on this plan for hospital overload. Nevertheless, the continued climb in hospitalization rates in the local region reminds residents to take precautions: get vaccinated and wear masks.

Board of Elections working to improve communications at polling sites

Communication technology for polling stations was an important topic of discussion for the Harrison County Board of Elections at their first monthly meeting of 2022. Not all polling locations are equipped with landlines. And at some, cell coverage is so bad there’s no way to make a mobile call from within the building.

At the board’s request, Sheriff Joe Myers was present at the meeting to answer questions about whether his department might be able to equip certain polling sites with multiple agency radio communication system (MARCS) radio sets. The radios, typically used by first responders, provide excellent wireless digital communication. But they are also extremely

expensive. Myers shared that there had been an incident in Stark County when several individuals stole, reprogrammed, and sold several such radios. He expressed concern about who would be responsible for the radios should they be deployed. Likely only two stations — Stock Township and Bowerston — would need them, so the possibility is not ruled out. As Myers stated, “We have a little bit of time.”

Another option discussed was having landlines put in for the sites in question and then temporarily activated.

A lack of communication technology is a cause for concern because poll workers are not supposed to leave the location where they are working, but it’s necessary that they have a means of communication. And as Holly Brindley pointed out, “If something bad happens, we

have no way to call anyone.”

Safety concerns also came up when the board discussed the results of their survey of poll workers. Only a few of those who worked the polls last year said they didn’t want to do it again. However, it was brought up that one poll worker had mentioned that they were afraid to work an election in 2022 “because of the climate of this country.”

The sheriff’s department has been diligent about checking up on polling stations on election days, and the board members thanked Myers for this.

The board also talked about how best to dispose of old equipment from elections past — sometimes long past. Should they wish to dispose of any item valued at $2,500 or more, documentation is required. The items

under discussion — old keyboards and printer calculators, for instance — are worth far less than that. Director Dion Troiano stated that sending the equipment to an electronics recycling facility would be ideal. They also have old chad-style ballot boxes in storage. Since they used some of these recently due to COVID safety protocols, the board agreed it would be best to hold onto a few.

With these safety protocols in mind, the board proceeded to talk about preparing PPE bags for poll workers. This is something the Jefferson County Board of Elections did as part of their procedure last year, and the Harrison County board members decided it was an idea worth emulating.

The council also agreed to have Carpenter submit a request for an insurance quote from Ohio Public Entities Pool to see how it would compare with their insurance costs and terms with the insurance pool they are presently with.

Huskies overpower Wildcats on the road

WATSON Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer RICHMOND—Hayden Cassidy poured in a game-high 23 points, and Jace Madzia added 17 to push the Huskies to a 65-32 victory over the Edison Wildcats this past Tuesday night in Jefferson County. Cassidy made it happen from the outside, connecting on five trey balls on a night that he was open to shoot early and often. Madzia, however, earned his keep from the free-throw line. The Huskies guard finished 11 of 17 on the freebies, going above and beyond what was needed to complete the season sweep of the Wildcats and helping move the Harrison squad to a 7-4 record.

Much like the first leg of the season series, if you weren’t there early, you didn’t see much of a game. Justin Clifford’s Huskies led 14-2 at the end of the first, expanding that lead to 31-14 at the halftime break. Even with the Huskies starting five being pulled for an impromptu stint in the third quarter, the Wildcats (1-12)

BY SHARON DALTON Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer The Harrison Central junior high boys’ basketball team played host to the Edison Wildcats last Saturday.

The seventh-grade Huskies stayed neck-and-neck with the Wildcats for the first half; the 11-8 halftime score favored the Wildcats, though. The Huskies continued to challenge their opponent in the second half but fell short in the last few seconds of the game. The final score was 26-23.

Leading the pack was Jace Violet with 14 points.

The eighth-grade team came out determined and persistent. The Huskies led at the half 15-11. And they got the job done in the second half with a final score of 30-22.

It was a sloppy affair, to say the least, with whistles blowing from start to finish — the two teams combined for 51 free-throw attempts. The Huskies finished 22 of 38 as a team, and the Wildcats were 8 of 13 on a busy night for the zebras.

Cassidy and Madzia weren’t the only two that had notable evenings in the book.

Jonathan Vermillion worked hard under the hoop for eight points, and Tre Rex flashed some potential with a contribution of seven marks of his own. Five other Harrison players picked up a pair of tallies: Brady Elliott, Mykel Quito, Nick Fluharty, Clayton Vermillion, and Daniel Ody. CADIZ – Following a sweep of Edison Local by the Lady Huskies last Monday, Harrison Central went back to work on the road in East Liverpool. The trip did not disappoint — the Huskies registered their seventh win of the season. With that win, the team has now climbed over the .500 mark with a 7-6 record.

Picking up where she left off against Edison (four-point game), Harrison Central’s junior point guard Maddy Butler handled the reins for the team while steering the club to a 38-33 win over the East Liverpool host. Butler totaled 14 points in the contest as the team’s point leader. Scrambling right behind Butler was a complementary 12-point performance by her senior teammate McKayla Dunkle. Dunkle scored 31 points in the game against Edison.

Emma Fischer had two points on the night, and McKenzie Harbold added three more. Danica Rensi also contributed three points, and Angi Ferri and Kaylyn Ledger chipped in two points each.

OBITUARIES David Tucker David A. Tucker, 67, Hopedale, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born on Dec. 25, 1954 in Metheun, Massachusetts, a son of the late Carle Richard and Marilyn Frances Greel Tucker.

He, along with his wife Jean, was the owner and operator of Tucker Farms and Leasing Company.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Mitch Tucker; three brothers: Francis, William, and Richard Tucker; and two sisters, Donna Ickler and Susan Wagner.

Surviving is his wife, Jean Tucker of Hopedale; a son, Carle (Julie) Tucker of Clinton, Ohio; a grandson, Austin Tucker; two great-grandchildren, Bristol and Brynlee; five siblings: Linda Jones of Minerva, Thomas (Rita) Tucker of Lakeworth, Florida, Dorothy “Dottie” Piper of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Nancy Elizabeth Tucker of Palmetto, Florida and Steven (Dora) Tucker of Chester, South Carolina; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, Jan. 15 from 11 a.m. until the funeral service at 1 p.m. at the Clark-Kirkland-Barr Funeral Home in Cadiz, with Reverend Pete Tuchek officiating.

Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Hopedale, Ohio. The memorial guestbook may be signed at www.clark-kirkland-barr. com.

Gary Berard Gary L. Berard, 69, of Carrollton, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022 at his home. He was born Oct. 19, 1952 in Steubenville, Ohio, a son of the late Domenic and Bessie Shaw Berard.

Gary was retired after 42 years with the Norfolk and Southern Railway.

He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a son, Kevin Andrew Berard on Oct. 28, 1996, and four siblings: Gene Berard, Robert Berard, William Berard, and Kathy Payne.

James Fluharty James K. Fluharty, age 77, of rural Bowerston, Ohio, died early Tuesday morning Jan. 11, 2022 in the Sunnyslope Care Center in Bowerston.

He was born on Dec. 22, 1944 in Rochester, New York and was the son of the late Kenneth Fluharty and Vessie Leona Pittman Byrd and was raised by his stepfather Melvin Byrd. In addition to his parents and stepfather, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Tom Byrd, Bob Byrd, and Alan Fluharty and a

sister, Martha Yeager.

Jim was a heavy equipment operator for many years, having worked for Puskarich Mining, Inc., spent 20 years with C K & K, Inc. in Tuscarawas, O, and retired in 2014 from Oxford Mining, Inc. in Cadiz, Ohio. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Vietnam era. A dedicated outdoorsman, he loved to go hunting and fishing. He was a knowledgeable and enthusiastic gun collector who enjoyed shooting guns for sport. He also collected and was very adept at repairing vintage clocks. He was very attached to his canine companion Coco. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Patricia Ann (Rhode) Fluharty, whom he married Nov. 2, 1968; his three children Charles “Chuck” Fluharty of Bowerston, Cathy (her wife Lori) Fluharty of Scio, and Chris Fluharty of Bowerston; two grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Janet Murray of Marysville, Ohio.

Funeral services will be conducted noon Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022 in the Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home with Pastor Billy Kremer officiating. Interment will follow in the Conotton Cemetery near Bowerston. Calling hours will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at noon in the funeral home.

Leonard Stewart Leonard J. “Lenny” Stewart, 79, of Jewett, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born on July 18, 1942 in Ames, New York, a son of the late James and Evalyn Kail Stewart.

Lenny was a self-employed farmer and a member of the Harrison Hills Church in Jewett, the UMWA, and Hopedale American Legion.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Dunlap Stewart; a son, David Stewart; and a brother, James Stewart.

Surviving is his son, Carl (Jessica) Stewart of Jewett; two daughters, Renee (William) Ralston of Rayland and Melissa (Robert) Hursey of Jewett; Freedom Curtis, granddaughter and caregiver; many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; a brother, Richard Stewart of Mishawaka, Indiana; and two sisters, Donna McGray of Jewett, Ohio and Janet Wells of Bellview, Ohio.

secretary of the Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott, Arizona. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Cadiz, Order of the Eastern Star at the Queen Esther Chapter in Phoenix, Arizona. She was a 1961 graduate of Hopedale High School.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband that she married on Sept. 24, 1976, Larry Botine on February 12, 2009; her brother, Richard Rensi; and a sisterin-law, Marlene Botine Havlik.

Surviving is her daughter, Debi (Ralph) Bratrsovsky of Fort Morgan, Colorado; four grandchildren, Rachel Wacker and Matthew, Greg, and Rebecca Bratrsovsky; great-granddaughter, Peighton Leigh Knight; a brother, Raymond Charles Rensi and wife Glenda of Dahlonega, Georgia; and sister-inlaw Verna Rensi of Hopedale, Ohio. Robert E. Johnson Robert E. Johnson, age 78 of Perry, passed away on Jan. 3, 2022 at the Tripoint Medical Center. Born Feb. 8, 1943 in Archer Township, Ohio to Alva and Sylvia Willis (ncc: Henry) Johnson, he had been a longtime area resident.

Robert worked for Laborers Local 310 as a foreman. He loved to travel and play poker. He had been to Las Vegas over 85 times. She was born June 27, 1936 in Cadiz, Ohio, a daughter of the late Leonard and Enid Patterson Merryman.

Shirley was a devoted Chrisitan, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and worked with her husband for many years doing the business end of their trucking company.

She also drove the school bus for 15 years for the Harrison Hills schools. Over the years, she enjoyed bowling, camping, swimming, picnics, and singing with her family.

Shirley was a lifelong member of the Asbury Chapel United Methodist Church. She served as the historian for the church. For 60 years, she enjoyed teaching Sunday school to children and rejoiced in them learning the Bible. She loved singing in church and in the choir. And she loved her church community.

She was devoted to reading scripture and, in the last months, writing them down. She said, “So that she would not forget.”

She was the family’s calm strength and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by two sons, James Craig Rogers and Donald L. Rogers; two brothers, Arnold Lewis (Louie) and Allan R. Merryman; her sister, Ellen Orr, and her husband Leslie; and two nephews, Leonard Leslie (Lennie) Orr and David Merryman.

Susan O’Neil Greene Susan O’Neil Greene of Delray, Florida passed away on Jan. 3, 2022. She was born on Jan. 3, 1950. Susan was a former resident of Cadiz and attended Cadiz High School.

She was preceded in death by parents Pauline and John Wilbur O’Neil; brothers John, Jim, and Jerry; and son Clayton Lawrence. She is survived by husband Bill Greene of Delray, Florida; sons Billy Greene and Travis Lawrence; aunt Janice Walker of Akron, Ohio; sister-in-law Anna O’Neil; many cousins; and special friend Priscilla Harris. Per Susan’s request, she has been cremated.

Zygfryd Dulkoski, Sr Zygfryd Balthazar Dulkoski, Sr, age 93, passed away Thursday, Jan. 6 2022 at his home near Jewett.

Born Feb. 26, 1928 in Adena, he was a son of the late Boleck Dulkoski and Pauline Runevitch Dulkoski. Ziggy honorably served in the U.S. Army as a medic. He worked at Y&O Elms #1 Mine for 32 years until it closed in 1980, then he worked for the village of Jewett until he retired.

Ziggy was a member of UMWA Local 1304 and a former member of the Jewett Sportsman’s Club, who enjoyed fishing in area lakes. A selftaught harmonica and accordion player, he still loved playing a couple of days out of the week for area seniors. He never met a stranger and enjoyed dancing, especially polkas and waltzes.

Ziggy dearly loved his family and enjoyed attending any family get-together.

Preceding him in death is his loving wife of 54 years, Audrey M. Grim Dulkoski, who died May 26, 2003; sons Zygfryd “Junior” Dulkoski and Robert Grim; two infant sons Jerry Lee and Thomas Patrick Dulkoski; and a granddaughter Kayla Dulkoski.

Surviving are children Gary (Danita) Dulkoski of New Philadelphia, Larry (Susan) Dulkoski and Wayne (Pam) Dulkoski, both of Germano, and Gloria (Mike) Carson of New Lexington; 14 grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren; brothers Matthew (Mardell) Dulkoski of Jewett, Mike (Peggy) Dulkoski of Scio, Clarence (Linda) Dulkoski, and Freddy (Rhonda) Dulkoski, both of Hopedale; and sister Nellie Schaney of Hopedale.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.

Congratulations to the family of Levi Shetler, who returned from California, where they were privileged to see their grandson William Fishes of Columbus march in the honor band at the Rose Parade in Pasadena.

The Conotton Valley bowling team is so honored to be undefeated in their schedule so far this season. Congratulations! The basketball team lost to Buckeye Trail and Ridgewood, while the girls’ team lost to Tuscarawas Valley and Buckeye Trail.

DEERSVILLE

By Susan Adams The Women of Mission of the Deersville United Methodist Church held their monthly meeting on Thursday, Jan. 6 at Timi’s restaurant in Cadiz with eight members present. The business meeting was called to order by vice president Gloria Allen. Holly Brindley extended grace, and the group enjoyed a delicious lunch.

The December minutes and the treasurer’s report were accepted as presented. In old business, Denise Smith is working with Giant Eagle to hopefully get donations for “Blessings in a Backpack” in the Harrison Hills School District. In new business, the group donated to a nephew of one member who lost everything when the tornado hit Kentucky. The group is still planning on having a vintage style show for their Mother’s Day luncheon in May. The group is also planning a trip to Amish country on March 3 to browse some of the shops for ideas for the style show. Gloria Allen presented an inspirational program on “We are People of Light.” At the conclusion, she gave each lady a Starburst candle to have a light to shine in their lives. The next meeting will be on Feb. 3rd at 11 a.m. at Timi’s Restaurant in Cadiz.

Thank you to all who came to the church on Jan. 10 for the business meetings of the Deersville UM Church. One item that the trustees are moving forward with is some restoration work to save the beautiful stained-glass windows. The church was dedicated on Feb. 25, 1883, 139 years ago. These windows have graced this church all of its days. The average cost per window is around $1,000, and there are 27 windows. The church will be starting a fundraising campaign to cover the cost of preserving these windows. If any past members, former residents, or anyone who passes this building in their travels finds it in their hearts to donate to this cause, please mail your donations to the Deersville UM Church (PO Box 59, Deersville OH 446930059). Please note that it is for the benefit of the window project.

The village of Cadiz is working to have a historic district in Cadiz. In 2004, the National Park Service placed Deersville’s Main Street on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district. The district consists of 25 buildings and a cemetery dating from 1815 to 1938. The church is one of these buildings, as is the parsonage (red house) located across the street.

The trustees have voted to have it torn down and the sandstone foundation sold. The trustee chair and pastor will be talking to the Ohio Valley District Buildings and Structures Committee to get their opinion about the destruction of the house. It is a dilemma. Once this structure is gone, it is gone forever — along with the history attached to it. The Deersville Improvement and Historic Preservation Society (DIHPS) hates to see any of the buildings on the National Register disappear. We hope something can be worked out to keep this house as part of the historic district and put to use instead of having it rundown and nonproductive. The setback here is it takes money to maintain, and insurance becomes a problem on an empty structure.

Eventually, as each building disappears, so does the historic district and Deersville. As a member of the church and DIHPS, I would like to see it saved.

The driver escaped with minor injuries.

This week I would like to take a minute and tell you about a really great person and neighbor who just passed away, Rita Rensi Botine. Ms. Rita and her dogs Charlie and Louie were my favorites to visit with. Ms. Rita helped me with a school project where I had to write about history. She told me about Hopedale when she was growing up. I could not believe how many different stores used to be here. I loved hearing about how it used to be and seeing pictures. I hardly recognized anything! She also helped give me ideas for my weekly News-Herald stories. When my dad first got his old car, she let us park it in her garage. She was always there for anybody and always had a smile for you. We love you, Ms. Rita. If you are looking for a new challenge, some fun, and a place to learn new things, remember it’s that time of the year to sign up for 4-H. Check with the OSU extension office for a club near you. By Esther McCoy All the hoopla of New Year’s Eve is over, and now it is time to get down to the job of living life to its fullest and doing things that need to be done, like feeding the birds who arrive at the patio and seem to expect a nice helping of birdseed. We haven’t seen any cardinals yet, but the smaller birds come out to party and enjoy a hearty breakfast on our patio.

Hannah Randolph was named the December Wildcat Cheerleader of the Month at Edison High School. She is also a great 4-H member and raises prize-winning steers. The school is selling T-shirts to raise money for the Harrison County horse barn project. Her mom, Bonnie, is busy with the Jefferson County Agricultural Society as well.

The Jefferson County Farm Bureau officers that were named in the fall are John Grafton, president; Beverly Riddle, vice president; Janice Jancura, secretary; Heidi Ryan, treasurer; and board members, Mark Clark, Harry Fair, Polly Givens, Heather Long, Owen Long, Suzanna McConnell, Corky Saiter, Drew Saiter, Nathan Watkins and Duayne Wetherell.

The county offices of Harrison, Jefferson, Carroll, and Tuscarawas have been combined into a headquarters in Tuscarawas County, and Carol Hoffman, who served as COA for 30 years, is now retired and enjoying life without getting up early. You will be hearing much more about the organizations in months to come.

In reading a brochure from “The Old Farmer’s Almanac,” I have read that New Year’s resolutions were adopted by the ancient Romans and were named for the two-faced Roman god Janus, who looks forward to new beginnings as well as backward for reflection and resolution.

The Romans would offer sacrifices to Janus and make promises of good behavior for the year ahead. Janus was the guardian of gates and doors and presided over the temple of peace, where the doors were opened only during wartime. It was a place of safety.

Again, from the Farmer’s Almanac, it is told that a slice of raw steak placed over a black eye or bad bruise, as boxers did in the past, reduced inflammation. As the meat deteriorated, it released protease, destroying blood clots and speeding up healing. I am sure that my boys and their dad would rather sizzle and eat the steak and let the bruises show.

Not much is going on now that winter is showing itself with snow occasionally. And it is always on the day we have planned to visit our children or friends. It is pretty, though.

That’s all for now. I hope to bring you more local news in the weeks to come. It just is not a busy time right now.

LEESVILLE—At the January meeting of the Conotton Valley Board of Education, treasurer Denise Ketchum administered the oath of office to new board member Jake Galigher.

Galigher ran in the November 2021 election to replace Debbie Carrothers, who chose not to run for an additional term.

The purchase of a new video display scoreboard failed to pass the board’s approval in November, with a 3-2 vote; Carrothers had voted against.

When the scoreboard item came up at the January meeting, superintendent Todd Herman explained that Jonathan Stuck had negotiated with Daktronics to secure a better deal that included parts, labor, and service totaling approximately $6,000.

Board members Rob Higgenbotham and Kevin Willoughby again voted against the purchase when put to an official vote. Galigher voted with board president Chris Bower and vice president Logan Putnam to approve the purchase amount of $194,836.

2022 Buckeye 8 bowling results

BY ED BANKS Harrison News-Herald Sports Writer ST. CLAIRSVILLE—On Monday night, the 2022 Buckeye 8 Bowling Tournament opened in St. Clairsville at the St. Clair Lanes.

Bowlers from East Liverpool, Beaver Local, Union Local, Martins Ferry, St. Clairsville, and Harrison Central were in attendance.

Those bowlers who finished in the top six places of the competition were awarded AllBuckeye 8 honors.

Those bowlers claiming the top 6 spots in the girls’ matchups were as follows: East Liverpool’s Addison Rudibaugh in first place, Beaver Local’s Sara Adams in second, St. Clairsville’s Sabrina Frazier in third, Harrison Central’s Alena Runevich in fourth, East Liverpool’s Paige Grimes in fifth, and East Liverpool’s Delaney Riggle in sixth.

For Harrison Central, the girls’ squad completed as follows: junior Cami Basich in ninth with 427, junior Lauren Best in 13th with 398, junior Karlea Thompson in 22nd with 253, sophomore Alexis Lishick in 24th with 229, and sophomore Grace Cain in 32nd with 136.

As a team, the Harrison Central girls averaged 2,698 in combined regular and Baker games completed during the

tournament. That score had the team at third place behind East Liverpool at 2,730 and St. Clairsville at 2,718. Union Local was fourth with a 2,311 average, Beaver Local landed in fifth at 2,195, and Martins Ferry finished in sixth at 1,681.

In the boys’ share of the competition, the top six individual scorers and All-Buckeye 8 bowlers included East Liverpool’s Paxton Grimes in first place, East Liverpool’s Nathan Kelly in second, Beaver Local’s Arik Moore in third, Beaver Local’s Aidan Pilarcikin fourth, East Liverpool’s Gavin Maze in fifth, and East Liverpool’s Kyle Haustman in sixth.

The competition rankings for the Harrison Central boys included freshman Drew Culbertson at 13th with 477, freshman Kobie Hennis in 15th with 448, sophomore Chad Viers in 16th with 446, sophomore John Gray in 18th with 445, and senior Davis Chrisman in 25th with 304.

As a team, the Harrison Central boys scored a tournament average of 2,951 for both regular and Baker games. As with the Harrison girls, they also were third in overall scoring. East Liverpool was in first place at 3,420, Beaver Local was second at 3,400, Union Local claimed fourth with 2,896, Martins Ferry averaged 2,624, and St. Clairsville was sixth at 2,564.

Husky bowling defeats River

CADIZ—On Saturday at the J R Lanes in New Athens, Harrison Central’s boys’ bowling team defeated River 1,719-1,399. Harrison’s Chad Viers, Kobe Hennis, Corey Hayes, and Drew Culberson emerged as the team’s high rollers on the day.

For the Huskies, Veirs rolled 150 and 164 for a 314 total. Hennis rolled 148 and 145 for 293, Hayes scored 167 and 124 for 291, and Culbertson earned 163 and 126 for 289. Nick Jacobs also rolled (single) for 112, and John Gray rolled (single) a 142.

The Huskies were back in business on Tuesday, where they took on the Bridgeport Bulldogs in New Athens. The boys closed the

evening by defeating the visitors 1,654-1,420.

The individual high scores of the evening were John Gray’s 179, Chad Viers’ 175, Kobie Hennis’ 157, Davis Chrisman’s 153, and Nick Jacobs’ 151.

The Husky girls’ varsity team was also victorious in their share of the evening. They defeated Bridgeport 1,485-1,221. Individual high scores from the matchup were Aleyna Runevitch’s 195 and 167, Karlea Thompson’s 126, and Alexis Lishick’s 124.

“This was a good night on the lanes for the Huskies,” said coach Bobbi Parkinson.

“The varsity will return to action next against Wheeling Central here in New Athens. That match will be a varsity teams match only. We will be holding a match practice beginning at 3:30 p.m. prior to the match start time of 3:45 p.m. As always, go Huskies!”

BY BILL RALSTON Flushing Alumni Association President It was a crisp, cold evening as a crowd packed the gym at the Flushing High School on Tuesday night, Jan. 11, 1955. The Flushing Orioles entered the evening with an 8-1 record, losing only to Old Washington in early December. Carter Howell had injured himself just prior to the game, and sadly, the Orioles lost a very close game.

Spirits were high that evening as Franklin High School of New Athens was visiting; the Orioles were primed to achieve another victory. The gym was packed, and the locals were ready for excitement. Little did they know they were to be treated to an exceptional evening. As the game progressed, Carter Howell amassed a huge number of points. The crowd was fully engaged, and as the game ended, Howell had scored 74 points. The final score was 118-52.

The Flushing Orioles ultimately ended their regular season with an 18-1 record and went on to the Belmont County Tournament to gain two more victories — and the championship. The Orioles were co-champions of the sectional tournament at Brilliant by beating an excellent Cadiz team 60-58. Sadly, at the district tournament, the Orioles met a very strong Baltic team and lost 71-68.

Carter Howell remains in the Ohio high school record books to this day. His 74 points in a single game places him 10th alltime among all high school sizes.

His 905 points during his 1954-55 senior year places Howell 16th all-time in state record books. Based on his exceptional performance, Howell was also selected to the first-team AllOhio Five for 1955. Business took Howell to other parts of the

country, to other states, but he never forgot his hometown of Flushing. He often visited, renewed friendships, and stayed close to his family. To all that knew him, he was always Carter.

At a point in his life, Carter Howell felt the need to return to Flushing and was elected mayor. His love and dedication to his community were evident, real, and genuine. He was home to make a difference.

Sadly, he developed health issues and lost his battle with heart disease on Feb. 16, 1990 at age 53. However, his sports career and commitment to his hometown will live on forever.

Flushing salutes Carter Howell near the 67th anniversary of that exceptional night in 1955.

This was the home of the honorable John A. and Amanda Bingham (North Main Street by the old Family Dollar store). In 1912 the church bought the property from Mr. R.P. Scott (the congregation had been meeting in the courthouse). The rooms of the Bingham house were converted into classrooms, prayer meetings, and business meetings.

The house connected to a large and handsome church assembly room for congregation services. Underneath the assembly room, there was a basement fitted up for a kitchen, dining room, and other conveniences.

Dedication Day for the church was Nov. 23, 1913 (from Cadiz Republican 11/20/1913 and 11/27/1913). Pictures from the Cadiz Republican Dec. 12, 1963 headline “Fire Destroys Christian Church” (burned 12/7/1963). “All 11 fire companies (from three counties) at the Christian Church fire had ample opportunity to work due to the large area involved.” A happy note: the church records, in a closet, were recovered. It was estimated that over 250,000 gallons of water were used to put out the fire. The current building was dedicated on Aug. 22, 1965. It was erected by the E.M. Long Corp. The Scio Volunteer Fire Department will hold their annual “Night At The Races” on Saturday, Feb. 12. The event takes place at the Scio fire hall located at 318 West Main Street. Dinner will be served, starting at 5:45 p.m., and will include the Scio Fire Department’s famous roast beef. Horse racing begins at 7 p.m. Horses can be purchased for $20, which gives admission to the horse owner and a guest. All food and beverages are included. If you don’t purchase a horse, admission is $10 at the door. Come join the fun with horse racing, raffles, and a 50-50 drawing. Good NEWS Listen Up!

By Pastor Ken Staley Pleasant Grove & Harrisville United Methodist Churches PastorKenStaley@gmail.com Sometime back in the 1960s or ‘70s, some enterprising person had a great idea: “Let’s make a record of the Bible, and people will be able to listen to it being read to them.” They got an actor named Alexander Scourby to do the narration. I’m guessing that when Alexander was a kid, he was chosen every year to be the narrator at the school play. His narration was brilliant. There was a slight problem, though.

Since the recording was on vinyl, it wasn’t possible to listen to it in your car or on a walk, or anywhere else. Then came cassettes, CDs, and smartphones. And now, we are without excuse for not filling our minds with God’s word. Many among us have various learning disabilities that make it difficult to comprehend what they read, but they have no problem comprehending what they hear.

Bible apps are perfect for them. I have friends who listen to the Bible every morning on their 40-mile drive to work.

Listening to a Bible narrator can make us hear scriptures that we’ve read a thousand times before in a whole new light. Just recently, I was listening to John’s gospel where Phillip says, “Lord, show us the Father, and it will be enough for us.” Jesus replied, “Phillip, have I been with you for such a long time, and yet you do not know me?” The part that caught my ear was “such a long time.” This is a scripture I had read hundreds of times before but listening to it audibly gave me a new understanding. Jesus’ time on Earth was about three years. When we consider scriptures like 2 Peter 3:8, “With the Lord, one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day,” it initially doesn’t make sense that Jesus would call three years a long time. The lesson here is that even though he is eternal and his glory unsearchable, Jesus is telling us that he fully expects us to know that he is God, that he is kind, compassionate, and forgiving, and that it doesn’t take a lifetime to figure that out.

The Bible being read aloud helped me learn something I had previously glossed over.

If you are not listening to the Bible audibly, I urge you to search for a Bible app that you can download on your computer or smartphone.

Most of them are free. I use Bible Gateway; it’s amazing, 12 audio narrators to listen to and 56 versions to read. It’s a lifesaver. Jesus is talking; let’s listen up.

Project Name: Freeport Sanitary Sewer System: The proposed project consists of the construction of a 75,000 gallon per day extended aeration wastewater treatment plant, one lift station, 4,160 linear feet of low-pressure force main, 5,250 linear feet of low-pressure sewer, 850 linear feet PVC force main, 17,200 linear feet sanitary sewer, 57 manhole, and 26 simplex grinder pumps.

Project activities for construction of the sanitary sewer system and eligible customer connections will occur within the Village of Freeport, Harrison County, Ohio. Proposed sanitary sewers along Burrell Avenue and the discharge pipe/outfall will be in the floodplain of Stillwater Creek. No above ground structures will be located within the floodplain. No adverse impact to the floodplain is expected as infrastructure will be buried and result in no change in grade or elevation.
