CADIZ – Tuesday the Harrison County Community Improvement Corporation (HCCIC) held a meeting in the Coal Room at the BMV building in Cadiz to discuss the progress and hear updates on several projects concerning the Industrial Park, the abandoned gas station on U.S. 250 and the recent news on Rosebud Mining’s request for a wastewater treatment plant near the 250 Speedway. e meeting, the first in three months, heard from Harrison County Economic Development Director Nick Homrighausen who first talked of Buxton, the company hired for their research in seeking possibilities of retail and commercial business within Harrison County. Leotta Location and Design LLC, was another company the
HCCIC contracted with for a broader study to see where land within the county would be conducive for multiple investments. Homrighausen stated that both were “on track” for exchanging information between he and his staff and the two companies concerning traffic, population and available properties, for example. “Buxton has recently identified 20 potential retail, commercial (businesses) that would fit Harrison County’s demographics,” Homrighausen announced. He also said it wouldn’t be possible for the county to support an Olive Garden restaurant but, what they do look at is the “hard data” and see what can be supported and 20 were identified, which he said would be spelled out during their next conference call approximately in one week. “And then we’ll move forward with…
pursuit letters via email then we set up meetings with those contacts,” Homrighausen explained and he reminded the board that they signed on with Buxton “because you can’t just go walk in and talk to the CEO of a company or business development because they get thousands of these a week, or a month from all over the country.” Regarding Leotta, he said a plan for them to visit in September was on track for identifying “multiple industrial, commercial parks around the county.” Homrighausen said a final report should be due by the end of September or beginning of October after conducting those site visits. He said his team is being asked background information on the county “because they wanted a non-biased view of wherever would be the best prime spots

NEW ATHENS – Council for the village of New Athens voted to extend their newest police officer Charley Hays to full-time status by a unanimous vote at Tuesday’s council meeting. Former council member Carol Huffman kicked off the meeting requesting that their officer be on the streets more than the 15 hours he currently has. She cited speeding as one matter as well as witnessing a very large truck pass through an alley near her, for requesting more police time. Mayor Joe Petro said Hays was initially brought in for 15 hours with the “option of increasing his time.” When she asked when they planned on increasing his hours Petro said they wanted the probation period to play out for several months “to see how he’s going to work out.” Petro then read off numerous citations and other matters of business where Hays has already patrolled totaling 85 miles. “He’s doing his job, he’s all over the place,” Petro told Huffman, to which she acknowledged Hays’ presence. Petro explained that Hays’ schedule allows for him to patrol through town at different times so as not to be predictable. Petro also stated that he’s not letting oil and gas company trucks “off the hook” as he’s heard some say. Later, when the subject turned to police business Arnold brought up a conversation he’d recently had with Hays after finding out the officer had placed an application in with another department. But it turned out that Hays only wants out of his current job and was just keeping his options open, according to Arnold.
John Gunsorek, a member of the Adena American Legion, Post 525. presented a commemorative mug to Anthony Smith, a World War II veteran, his son and caretaker, Mark, is in back of the wheelchair. The legion presented cups to Leann Sliva for 12 years of service; and Sherri Friend for 10 years of service. Vietnam veterans were honored as the veterans.
