CADIZ – The monstrous wasterwater treatment plant costs just got a tad lighter as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) made their $950,000 grant to the village of Cadiz official last Friday afternoon. Loans are also involved in the project but the signing Friday made that sum of free money official. Congressman Bill Johnson-R (District 6), Mayor of Cadiz Ken Zitko, Village Administrator of Cadiz Ted Andrzejewski and the special guest, Capt. Andrew Williams, project manager for USACE, was the first to sign the document followed by the other three officials. “This is going to go a long way [and] we have a lot more to spend,” Zitko said. “This will go a long way in helping
us continue our work, which the EPA has mandated…” Capt. Williams described himself as the “project manager of the Cadiz wastewater system’s improvement project.” “It’s a pleasure to be here today,” he told the group, which was mainly made up of representatives of the media. He then provided a little history of the U.S. Congress’s passing of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1824 through the passing of the Water Resources Development Act of 1999, “to help alleviate some of the environmental infrastructure problems through out the state.” Congressman Johnson called it a big day and noted the amount of collaboration that has been ongoing within Harrison County. “This is an example of another case of
that kind of collaboration,” he stated and went on to explain working together when the post office closed and how to get another built within the village of Cadiz. “Very, very important,” Johnson said adding that the unemployment rate in Harrison County since 2011, went from one of the worst in the state (13.1 percent) to one of the best (3.9 percent). “And that is in large part due to all the oil and gas business that is taking place all around us in Harrison County and all the industries that are supporting the oil and gas industry,” Johnson explained. He said as economic growth continues so does the needs of the area’s infrastructure. “And the wastewater project here is

CADIZ – Superintendent Dana Snider announced at last Thursday’s Harrison Hills Board of Education (HHBOE) meeting the resignation of Brent Ripley. Snider said she was “sadly” requesting the board to accept his resignation effective Aug. 1. “I hate to see him go but it’s a wonderful opportunity for him…” Snider said. Ripley will be moving on to the Bridgeport School District. Ripley will be leaving Harrison Hills after 21 years of employment where he started out teaching choir, was a varsity girls assistant basketball coach, band director, assistant thespian advisor, student counsel advisor, middle school and high school principal and also started the soccer program at Harrison Central. Ripley, who currently serves as director of operations will soon be the superintendent of the Bridgeport School District. “He’s only a phone call away,” Snider said of the wellliked Mr. Ripley as some on the board joked of his changing allegiance. President Deborah Kenny thanked Ripley and commended him on doing a “great job” for the school. “We appreciate everything you’ve done,” she told him. Also, Snider noted the help the Cadiz Business Association (CBA) is getting from the Harrison Central football players. She said the players are helping the CBA out at the County Fair. “…It’s truly appreciated and it lets the community see what a great job the students can do,” Snider told the board.

Board member DJ Watson relayed information on a recent advisory meeting attended by he and Kenny. Community leaders were present speaking to the workforce about their students and outreach programs, according to Watson. Internships were discussed as Snider noted not only students needing to get ready for college but the workforce as well. “Not all students are college bound, so we’re working hard to see some internships possibly for some of our students so they could get a feel for the workplace,” Snider explained. Regarding the new school, Kenny stated that it will open on schedule as apparent rumors have circulated in some circles as to whether it would or not. “We are going to open on schedule, which seems to be the number one question…yes it is opening on schedule,” Kenny stated. The board also noted the Aug. 10 ribbon cutting at the new school and welcomed everyone to attend. “We’d like to see the community come out and support the facility and for us to be very thankful and grateful for what they’ve done for Harrison Hills City School District” Snider said.
