GREEN FOR SPEED Do you want to leave those oil-fuelled cars in the dust and your friends green with envy? Then get ready for a high performance version of Tesla’s Model S zero-emission sedan, which will be launched in the first quarter of 2012. This sports edition doesn’t come cheap as it will reportedly retail around €57,500, but it definitely holds its own next to less environmentally friendly competitors, accelerating from zero to 100km/h in less than five seconds.

SHOE BAGS Let’s face it: your suede shoes deserve better than being thrown into some cheap, plastic bag at the bottom of your suitcase. Founded last year, Portland-based company MS&Co. has been making waves in the fashion blogosphere with its hand-made, stylish shoe bags that come in fabrics such as canvas, wool and cotton. In case your gadgets are feeling a bit neglected, MS&Co. also produces some sleek denim sleeves to protect your glasses, smart phone and notepad. 12

The Sapeurs are not your average wealthy fashion icons, but regular Congolese men, such as taxi drivers, carpenters and even gravediggers, who spend their last pennies on fine, expensive clothes, for one reason – they believe dressing well makes you a better person. To catch a glimpse of their colourful outfits and confident attitudes, check out Daniele Tamagni’s photos during the World Press Photo travelling exhibition in cities like Bratislava (Nov 2-22), London (Nov 11-29) and Barcelona (Nov 23-Dec 18). All cities can be reached with direct flights from Schiphol. No key, no worries To those of us constantly scratching our heads about the mysterious whereabouts of our keys, this news will come as a huge relief. At the 2011 Taipei International Invention Show, a team of Taiwanese researchers won a Gold medal with their ‘invisible key’ concept. Based mainly on a chip that can detect 3D movement, the ‘invisible key’ allows you to open a door just by snapping your fingers, for example. Or lifting the middle one, if that strikes your fancy. Ben jij je sleutels vaak kwijt? Dan wordt je vast gelukkig van dit nieuws. Op de Taipei International Invention Show hebben een aantal Taiwanese onderzoekers een gouden medaille gewonnen met hun ‘onzichtbare sleutel’. Hierin zit een chip die 3D-beweging kan detecteren waardoor je de deur voortaan met je vingers kan opendoen.

BIKE AND SURF Can’t leave the house without your Galaxy tab? Then you’ll be pleased to know that Samsung has teamed up with cycle makers 14 Bike Co for a beautiful, if impractical, fixie-tab tandem. Painted in a classy black and white combo, with the option of having the frame in one of these two colours, the bike features a tablet holder made from the same fiber used in Formula 1 cars. We’re not sure how you can bend over and tap your tab at the same time, but at least it’s pretty. Kan je het huis niet verlaten zonder je Galaxy tab? Dan zul je blij zijn om te weten dat Samsung samen met fietsproducent 14 Bike Co een Fixie-tab tandem heeft gemaakt. FINE WINE Three hundred bottles of Chateau LafiteRothschild sold at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong this September for €390,000, making it the single most expensive lot of wine sold so far in 2011 and one of priciest ever. Spanning every year since 1981, this impressive collection topped off a massive wine sale of €5.5 million in just two days. In the same auction, one of the bidders snagged a bottle of Petrus 1947 for an astounding €39,000. Hope he’s sipping it slowly! Op een veiling bij Christie’s in Hong Kong zijn in september driehonderd flessen Chateau Lafite-Rothschild verkocht voor €390.000. Dat maakt deze wijn de duurste ooit. In 1981 werd hun collectie zeer goed verkocht en verdiende het wijnhuis €5,5 miljoen in slechts twee dagen. Tijdens diezelfde veiling had een van de bieders een fles Petrus uit 1947 op de kop getikt voor de vriendenprijs van €39.000. Nu maar hopen dat hij langzaam drinkt.

GUCCI MUSEUM What better way to celebrate 90 years of fashion history than by opening a museum right in the centre of Florence? Little over a month ago, Italian fashion house Gucci revealed this new institution, situated in the Palazzo della Mercanzia in Piazza della Signoria. The glamorous party featured not only ‘It girls’ such as Monegasque royal Charlotte Casiraghi, Bond girl Gemma Arterton and Hollywood starlet Camilla Belle, but also some rockin’ tunes from Blondie. If you’re in town, don’t miss the museum’s 1970s Gucci-upholstered car.

Daisy Lowe, the English fashion model famous for dating musical jack-of-all-trades Mark Ronson and posing naked for the September issue of Playboy US, is starring in Sony Ericsson’s new ad for the Xperia Ray. It took us a couple of replays to notice the phone, but can you really blame us for the oversight? Daisy acts out all the cardinal sins, writhing around in sexy lingerie and a tight-fitting pink latex dress, leaving little to the imagination. Oh, and the phone’s pretty cool too, apparently, running Android and featuring an 8.1 megapixel camera perfect for snapping some shots of Daisy in her dimly lit bedroom. On October 23 it was ten years to the day that Privium introduced the iris scan system that allowed remarkably faster border passage at the airport. He’s at the age where he wants to explore everything which doesn’t go over so well in a plane!’

‘We zijn een jaar geleden voor ons werk naar Den Haag verhuisd. Dat bleek een schot in de roos. We vinden het heerlijk om te fietsen en naar het strand te gaan. Nu ben ik onderweg naar Finland om de doop van mijn nichtje bij te wonen. Het is fantastisch om mijn vrienden en familie weer te zien, maar ik heb minder zin in de vlucht met die kleine. Hij is echt op zo’n leeftijd waarin hij alles wil ontdekken. In een vliegtuig is dat lastig.’

Living in Europe is so much better for my field of work. I love living in Amsterdam because you never know where someone is from. It’s such a melting pot with half the population of the city coming from abroad. I actually have a hard time meeting Dutch people!’

‘Als schoenontwerper ga ik naar de fashion week in Parijs. Eens kijken wat het nieuwe seizoen doet. Al die hoogstaande designs vormen de perfecte graadmeter. Eigenlijk zou iedereen die in deze branche werkt in Europa moeten wonen. Het leukste aan Amsterdam vind ik dat je nooit weet waar iemand vandaan komt. Het is echt een smeltkroes, de helft van de inwoners komt uit het buitenland. Ik vind het nog knap lastig om Nederlanders te ontmoeten!’

How to Make it in America, which is sometimes referred to as the ‘low-rent’ version of Entourage, is produced by Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg, who ironically enough also created Entourage. Rapper KiD CuDi plays Domingo Brown, a drug dealer covering as a dog walker on HTMIIA, which is also ironic because Cudi has recently renounced drugs after a long struggle with substance abuse. INTERESSANT FEITJE:

HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA

EASTBOUND & DOWN

Work hard; play harder – it should be the slogan for Ben and Cam’s fashion label Crisp in How to Make it in America: the story of 20-something hipsters hustling to make it big in the Big Apple. The show is less about the instant gratification we’ve all seen on the tube before and more about the reality of the struggle that haunts creatives and their inner city lives. It’s Entourage before the entourage; glamorous without the glamour. Admittedly it takes a while to get into, but the gritty realism, edgy music, scrambling spirit and Brooklyn backdrop are too addictive to ignore.

Treme explores the devastation, both physical and emotional, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. HBO successfully reteamed with David Simon of The Wire and a host of its actors. From the outset the audience is dropped head first into the gritty, honest and often disturbing realism that comes with a disaster of this magnitude. The almost ethnographic account propagates the glory of New Orleans music, food and its people in the most inglorious of times. Told through the eyes of the city’s most affected people the narrative is gripping and sometimes uncomfortable, but always striking and never sensationalistic. Treme is a drama in the truest sense of the word.

Meet Kenny Powers: the archetypal jerk whose moral compass points in the direction of his every desire. He will, against all your efforts, grow on you, precisely because of his aggressive audacity and misguided sense of righteous pride. After a fleeting career in major league baseball, Powers returns to his hometown to teach at his high school, only to find he is no longer the hot stuff he thought he was. Yearning for that spotlight, Kenny does everything in his power to make it back. Instead of contributing to the vast wasteland that is sitcom television, the great cast, even better writing and explosively funny set of situations elevate the show to greatness.

De serie gaat vooral over de strijd die de creatieven achtervolgt in hun stadse levens. Het is Entourage vóór de entourage erbij komt, glamoureus zonder de glamour. Het duurt even voor je erin zit, maar het korrelige realisme, de scherpe muziek en het levendige Brooklyn als decor maken de serie toch te leuk om te negeren.

Treme verkent de fysieke en emotionele verwoesting die orkaan Katrina heeft aangericht. Vanaf het begin wordt je geconfronteerd met het zanderige, eerlijke en vaak verontrustende realisme die een ramp van dit formaat met zich meebrengt. Het verhaal wordt verteld door de ogen van de mensen die het zwaarst zijn getroffen en dat maakt het aangrijpend. De karakters zijn gelaagd en de acteurs die ze portretteren zijn bijzonder getalenteerd. Treme is een drama in de ware zin van het woord.

Maak kennis met Kenny Powers: de typische sukkel wiens morele kompas alleen naar zichzelf wijst. Hij zal, tegen al je wensen in, een deel van je leven gaan uitmaken vanwege zijn moed en misplaatste gevoel van trots. Na een vluchtige baseball carrière, keert Powers terug naar zijn geboortestad om les te geven op zijn middelbare school. Daar komt hij erachter dat hij minder cool is dan hij zelf dacht. Wat klinkt als een te verwaarlozen serie, is dankzij de geweldige cast, nog betere dialogen en grappige situaties verslavend leuk.

James Blake has become an icon for modern electronic music, practically inventing the genre people are now calling minimalist post-dubstep. The 23 year old has a knack for creating tension, releasing it and judiciously using the breathing space in between. Although exceedingly abstract and marked by a distinctive lack of the deep base that he is so well known for (a flippant wink at the title), the new EP Enough Thunder is no different. Still, the space-invader sounds and creatures-ofthe-deep-dub do occasionally push the proverbial boat out a little far. The record is deeply personal, strikingly melancholic and refreshingly introspective, but the question lingers: is there, perhaps, a limit to our love of the progressive Blake?

The album Superheavy is a collaboration by Joss Stone, Mick Jagger, David Stewart, A.R. Rahman and Damian Marley. Might sound like a weird mix of genres, but turns out to be surprisingly stirring. The eponymous opener is rough, raw and novel with a catchy chorus. But the resulting ‘reggae-inflected pop-rock’ that follows misses the synergy required to make the record a classic, instead relegating it to star-studded pet-project infamy. Beautiful People displays a collaborative harmony the five undoubtedly had in mind embarking on the ambitious project, but the majority of songs are overproduced symphonies of musical tag. Though it matures with repetition, Superheavy, while super fun, remains super heavy.

A fairytale riff: check; innocent laughter: check; some epic soft-to-louder-to-belting vocals: check. You guessed it; Florence is back opening her sophomore album Ceremonials with the superb Only if for a Night. After selling three million copies of Lungs, the ethereal fairy princess is back with more beguiling vocals and enigmatic sounds. The record displays a richness and maturity that through choirs, synths, crashing drums and epic vocals have an almost biblical resonance. Ceremonials is more dramatic and sadly more pop, but it doesn’t lose much of the pulsating, slightly freaky heart we all know and love Florence for. The dame-turned-diva has her heart firmly set on taking the pop world by storm.

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE

The machine in Florence + The Machine refers to the musicians that accompany Florence and her howling vocals. Their music is typically referred to as ‘soul inspired indie’, but has more recently been redefining notions of pop. The 24 year old grew up listening to the White Stripes and Kate Bush, who, due to her elaborate performances, trilling vocals and eccentric folk-art style, she is often likened to. Florence was discovered by her current manager while singing Motown covers drunk in a nightclub toilet in Camberwell, London. De machine in Florence + The Machine verwijst naar de muzikanten die Florence’ huilende zang begeleiden. Hun muziek wordt meestal aangeduid als op soul geïnspireerde indie, maar het heeft recentelijk meer noties van pop meegekregen. De 24-jarige zangeres groeide op met de White Stripes en Kate Bush - met wie ze vanwege haar uitgebreide optredens, trillende zang en excentrieke folk-art stijl vaak wordt vergeleken. Haar manager ontdekte haar toen ze lam op het toilet Motown covers aan het zingen was in een nachtclub in Camberwell, Londen.

This month’s James Blake is binnen no time uitgegroeid tot een icoon in de moderne elektronische muziek. De 23-jarige is goed in het creëren van spanning door te spelen met ademruimte tussen woorden. Hoewel zeer abstract en zonder kenmerkende bass (een knipoog naar de titel), is de nieuwe EP Enough Thunder niet anders dan de voorganger, al gaan de ruimteklanken en de dubgeluiden soms wel iets ver. De plaat is persoonlijk en opvallend, maar de vraag blijft hangen: is het mogelijk dat er een ‘limit to our love’ is voor Blake?

Superheavy is een samenwerking tussen Joss Stone, Mick Jagger, David Stewart, AR Rahman en Damian Marley. Klinkt als een rare mix, maar is eigenlijk verrassend leuk. De gelijknamige openingssong is ruw, rauw en het refrein blijft goed hangen. Al mist de overige tot reggaeverbogen pop-rock (het klinkt op papier al net zo verwarrend als op de plaat) de synergie die nodig is om het ‘een klassieker’ te kunnen noemen. Het wordt wel beter naarmate je er vaker naar luistert, maar Superheavy blijft behalve leuk vooral superzwaar.

Een sprookjesachtig riffje: check. Wat onschuldig plezier: check. Epische keelklanken die langzaam steeds harder klinken: check. Met de geweldige openingstrack Only if for a Night van haar tweede album Ceremonials is Florence terug van weggeweest. Koor, synthesizer, drum en zang komen bijna bijbels over. Ceremonials is helaas wat poppy, maar het pulserende en tikje gekke hart van Florence is er nog zeker in te vinden. Deze - in een diva getransformeerde - vrouw is vastbesloten om de popwereld op te schudden.

AT THIS MOMENT 3.4 million people are living the Berlin life. Many do so either as an artist or a student (or both). Rental prices are low, which might explain the city’s popularity with the young and the restless, but there’s something much more exciting going on too. SPEAKING OUT Berlin has become a global magnet for contemporary artists. Offspring of the children of the revolution who grew up with communist repression are now dedicating their lives to freedom of expression and they’re sharing it with the world. Take Tacheles. Twenty years ago this was a place where underground social gatherings took place. Now anyone who’s interested in getting to know an artist – crosslegged with a mouthful of paint brushes and engrossed in his work – is welcome at this imposing building in Mitte, covered in wall-towall graffiti and paint. A new type of openness has emerged and Tacheles is its name (ed., Yiddish for ‘speaking out’). The same goes for the squatting culture, characteristic of

Abandoned buildings plastered with posters and graffiti appear to be for insiders only, but in reality they host pop-up restaurants, theatre performances, cinema screenings and club nights. BANANA TRAIL Close to Tacheles other war-destructed buildings have been repaired and now glow, dazzling above the parasols of restaurant terraces and lively bars. At the Hackescher Markt people buy fruit, enter one of the slick boutiques where the craftsmen make many of their wares in the shop itself or wander through Hackesche Höfe (ed., a labyrinth of beautifully renovated interconnected courtyards). Neem Tacheles. Twintig jaar geleden was dit een plek waar geheime ontmoetingen werden georganiseerd. Nu is iedereen die het leuk vindt om een kunstenaar te leren kennen - in kleermakerszit met z’n mond vol kwasten welkom in het imposante gebouw in Mitte dat van top tot teen in graffiti is gehuld. Er is een nieuw soort openheid ontstaan en Tacheles (Hebreeuws voor ‘je mening uiten’) is daar een schoolvoorbeeld van. Hetzelfde geldt overigens voor de kraakcultuur, die Berlijn sinds de jaren ‘90 kenmerkt. Verlaten gebouwen vol posters en graffiti líjken alleen toegankelijk voor incrowd, het tegendeel is waar: het zijn pop-up restaurants, er worden opvoeringen gedaan, films vertoond en feesten gegeven.

In fact, there are so many galleries that choosing between them is no simple task. Luckily Berliners have come up with a special guide for that, better known as ‘the banana trail’. If you find yourself standing in the Auguststraße (running between Tacheles and Hackesche Höfe) look out for Velvet Underground-esque banana stencils stamped around town by German artist Thomas Baumgärtel. The fruit symbolises the exotic luxuries that East Berliners were deprived of post-unification and tells you that you’ve found the cream of the crop in art.

Sterker, er zijn hier zoveel galeries dat het nog lastig is om een keuze te maken. Gelukkig hebben de inwoners daar iets op gevonden. Een speciale gids die ze het ‘banana trail’ noemen. Sta je in de Auguststraße (tussen Tacheles en de Hackesche Höfe), kijk dan uit naar Velvet Underground-achtige bananen. Voordat de stad werd herenigd symboliseerde de op de muur gestempelde banaan van de Duitse kunstenaar Thomas Baumgärtel alle exotische vruchten waaraan de Oost Berlijners waren onttrokken. Nu is het vooral een teken waaraan je de beste galeries kan herkennen.

LEAVE YOUR MARK If you didn’t find any bananas, don’t worry: around here art is to be found anywhere. The East Side Gallery stands as the largest permanent open air gallery in the world. A 1.3 kilometre stretch of the Berlin wall adorned with the work of some 46 artists who have transformed an old symbol of repression and fear into a bright and empowering salute to freedom.

PAK EEN PEN Ben je geen bananen tegengekomen? Geen zorgen. De East Side Gallery is het grootste openlucht museum ter wereld. Hier ligt de kunst letterlijk op straat. Een stuk Berlijnse muur van 1.3 kilometer lang is versierd met het werk van ongeveer 46 kunstenaars die dit symbool van onderdrukking en angst zo hebben omgetoverd in een vrolijke en krachtige groet naar de vrijheid.

The canvas city is not for any art lover though. Those seeking out old masters, classical and Baroque will find satisfaction elsewhere. Berlin’s art is raw, rough and touchably real. It’s living, breathing and pulsating in among the multicolour concrete. To those who love it, I’d say: make sure to buy a paint pen and leave your mark before you go. 

De stad als canvas is niet voor iedere kunstliefhebber weggelegd. Hou je meer van de oude meesters, van klassiek en barok? Dan zul je je bevrediging elders moeten zoeken. Berlijnse kunst is rauw, schraal en tastbaar. Het leeft, ademt en beweegt in de verschillende lagen cement. En aan hen die hier wél iets mee kunnen, zou ik zeggen: pak een pen en laat een blijk van waardering achter. 

HOELANG IS HET al geleden dat ze in haar eentje in een hotel verbleef? Eenmaal getrouwd ben je geneigd aan elkaar te klitten als de twee kersen aan één steeltje die je vroeger als kind om je oren hing. Ook nogal lang geleden. Het verrast haar hoe prettig het is om even niet aan iemand anders vast te zitten. Armslag. Beenruimte. Toen ze thuis de deur achter zich dichtsloeg, had ze deze opluchting niet voorzien. Het was helemaal niet de bedoeling geweest dat ze alleen op pad zou gaan. Blijkbaar doet het iets met je wanneer je in je eentje een nacht op een ferry doorbrengt en vervolgens een paar honderd kilometer over onbekende wegen rijdt: onderweg is ze een andere versie van zichzelf geworden. De oude Claire. De eigenlijke Claire. Daarom hebben ‘zakenreizen’ dus zo’n dubieuze reputatie. Wie ver van huis uit een vliegtuig stapt, en dat hoeft niet eens Shanghai Airport te zijn, is niet meer de persoon die op Schiphol door een liefhebbend gezin werd uitgezwaaid. Achter de piccolo loopt ze de kamer in. De vloerbedekking is zo dik dat hij veert. Er ligt een gouden zweem over, die zich herhaalt in de stof van de gedrapeerde gordijnen. De piccolo vlijt haar koffer liefdevol neer op een speciaal daarvoor bestemd meubel met gekrulde poten. Dat maak je niet vaak mee, dat iemand een koffer neerlegt alsof het zijn vrouw is. Als hij weg is, vraagt ze zich af of ze hem een fooi had moeten geven. Ze kijkt naar het bed, waarin ze zonder Axel zal slapen. Met die massa weelderige kussens ziet het eruit alsof slapen hier maar bijzaak is. Een vreemd bed lijkt iets te beloven: je zult er dingen in beleven die thuis buiten je bereik liggen of waaraan je gewoon nooit denkt. Zelfs voor mensen die sinds mensenheugenis samen reizen, kan zo’n bed een enorme opkikker betekenen. Na hoeveel jaren eigenlijk gaan paren voor het gemak anders over seks denken? Wanneer beginnen we onszelf en elkaar wijs te maken 38

dat de doorzwete nachten van weleer niets voorstelden in vergelijking met de knusse, verknochte, geroutineerde handelingen van nu? In hoeveel bedden, meestal thuis, wacht de een op een signaal van de ander, loyaal en berustend: als jij iets wilt, doe ik wel mee? Al na twee jaar, volgens onderzoek. Axel is dol op populair-wetenschappelijk onderzoek, hij leest haar op zondagochtend bij het ontbijt graag voor uit krantenbijlages over de nieuwste inzichten op het gebied van breinsprongen of vogelmigratie. Maar van Axel en haar kun je niet zeggen dat ze al zo snel uitgeblust waren. Twaalf jaar getrouwd, en niettemin hebben ze drie dagen geleden nog hartstochtelijk gevreeën. Voordat de bom barstte, zogezegd.

Morgen zal niemand iets van haar tegenzin merken Ze moet haar koffer uitpakken en een plan maken voor de rest van de middag, haar enige vrije middag, in plaats van hier om zich heen te staren als iemand die in een betoverd woud is beland. Het is maar een hotelkamer, Claire. Een hotelkamer met zeezicht, dat wel. Ze opent de balkondeuren en stapt naar buiten. Even bekruipt haar een onwezenlijk gevoel, alsof alles om haar heen van kleur verschiet. Alsof een grote schaar opeens een knip in de werkelijkheid zet waar al het rood, geel en blauw uit de wereld door weglekt, als ijs uit een hoorntje. Ze loopt naar de rand van het balkon en leunt tegen de balustrade. Ze is bekaf van de lange autorit, dat moet het zijn. En het licht hier, zo pal aan zee, is natuurlijk anders dan ze

gewend is, ijler, witter. Wat een mooie dag is het. Je zou je in Italië wanen in plaats van aan de Engelse kust. De zon vonkt in de frames van de ligstoelen op het strand beneden haar. Het is windstil, de zee ligt er loom bij. Schoenen uit. Heeft ze eraan gedacht slippers mee te nemen? Door die hele toestand met Axel heeft ze er haar hoofd niet goed bij kunnen houden. Op blote voeten loopt ze naar binnen en ritst haar koffer open. Boven op haar kleren ligt het plastic mapje met de toespraak die ze morgen zal houden. Mensen bedanken is nooit haar sterkste kant geweest. Het maakt haar bij voorbaat humeurig haar erkentelijkheid voor iets te moeten betuigen. En dankbaarheid betonen voor de waardering die haar werk nu opeens ten deel is gevallen, ligt haar al helemaal niet. Wat zij maakt is goed zoals het is, of beter gezegd, het is zoals het is. Andermans oordeel voegt er niets aan toe en doet er niets aan af. Maar morgen zal niemand iets van haar tegenzin merken. Ze heeft een stem die onder alle omstandigheden zacht, warm en vriendelijk klinkt. Een ronduit lieve stem. Een suja-sujakindjestem. Ze heeft haar hele leven hard aan die stem gewerkt. Inmiddels kan ze er de meest grove beledigingen mee uitspreken zonder dat de geadresseerden het lijken te merken. Die horen alleen maar het suja-zoete timbre en hangen als gedrogeerd aan haar lippen. Ze denkt: ik word omringd door ezels en idioten. Op de schrijftafel naast het bed, bij een boeket dat ongetwijfeld van Gregory afkomstig is, ziet ze de catalogus van haar expositie liggen. Ze zal er vanavond fatsoenshalve nog even in bladeren. Tot vervelens toe heeft ze de drukproeven gecorrigeerd. Ze legt een stapeltje ondergoed in een la en stalt in de badkamer haar toiletartikelen uit op de brede rand van de wastafel. Sinds ze veertig is, smeert ze zoveel producten op haar gezicht dat het bijna lachwekkend wordt. Terwijl ze een tube zonnebrandolie opendraait, bestudeert ze

LITERATUUR de jacuzzi en de stoomcabine. De Royal Quilting Academy heeft in elk geval niet beknibbeld op het verblijf van hun eregast. Tevreden wast ze haar handen en keert terug naar haar koffer. Ze schudt de kreukels uit het nachtblauwe zijden pak dat ze morgen bij het diner zal dragen. Het jasje heeft een geschulpte kraag en een zo uitgekiende snit dat zelfs een paard er nog een diva in zou lijken. Net heeft ze het over een ielig hotelhangertje gedrapeerd als de telefoon gaat. Ze ploft neer op het bed en grist de hoorn van de haak. Meteen wil alles in haar alleen nog maar snauwerig ‘Hello’ roepen, want ze merkt dat het bed te kort voor haar is. Wat heeft ze aan al die luxe hier als ze geen oog dicht zal kunnen doen tenzij ze zich diagonaal uitstrekt? Maar ze weet zich te beheersen en spint haar naam, zachtjes vibrerend, met een vraagteken erachter. ‘Claire Paagman?’ Dat ontwapent de mensen, zo’n vraagteken. ‘Claire Pacman!’ Ze trekt haar knieën op, maar blijft zich voelen als een sint-bernardshond in de mand van een teckel. ‘Hi, Gregory.’ ‘Darling!’ zegt hij op een toon die geen tegenspraak duldt. ‘Love you heaps for coming over. Oh, sod it. It’s not just me. All of us adore you, of course.’ En in een flits heeft ze weer het gevoel dat er fundamenteel iets niet klópt. Dat ze vanuit haar ooghoek iets zíét, iets dat vervormd is, nee, niet vervormd, maar toch schrikbarend anders is dan het hoort te zijn. Of komt dat doordat er in haar hoofd opeens tientallen kleine poppetjes, struikelend over hun poppenbeentjes, een steiger op en af rennen terwijl ze met inspanning van al hun poppenkrachtjes een reusachtig spandoek omhoog hijsen waarop staat: SERIOUS OPPOSITION IS A MEASURE OF SUCCES?

Having allergies can actually be extremely helpful if you’re a green piglet escaping from huge monsters. And that’s exactly what Gesundheit! is about. Sneezing is your only weapon, but obviously it doesn’t kill. Your snot only distracts the bad guys. However, this can be used to guide them to bear traps scattered around each level. The scenery in this game is hand-drawn, so it’s not only lots of fun to play, but also quite beautiful.

Me Monstar: Hear Me Roar! is a PSP mini game developed by the now defunct Cohort Studios. By gobbling up smaller enemies and food, your ‘monstar’ grows and grows, just like the trash ball from Katamari Damacy. Haggis, curry and sundaes are just a few examples of the food your monstar has to eat to gain invincibility, firebreath and so on. Me Monstar is great fun, though it could use some fine-tuning and doesn’t offer much replayability.

You are the last rocket ever made for an all-out intergalactic war, but that war is over. Now your sole purpose is to assist a talking computer. Your job? Grab as many collectibles as possible, while reaching the exit of each level. Lots of trial and error is encountered along the way, which can be annoying if you die over and over again - which is bound to happen. Nevertheless, Shaun Inman’s The Last Rocket offers enough addictive gameplay to keep you trying.

Fast-paced fighting action that revolves around freshly baked muffins. That’s Muffin Knight in a nutshell. An illustrious foe, called the Lava King, stole the delicacies. Now an ensemble of 15 characters tries to get the pastries back. Of course, fighting is the way to go. Moreover, if you collect a muffin, the character you’re battling with changes. That’s a nice twist, causing more dynamic gameplay. Too bad it’s so easy to lose track of the on-screen touch buttons.

Met jouw snot kun je de monsters weliswaar niet doden, maar wel afleiden en zo in de val lokken. Na een desastreuze intergalactische oorlog ben je als laatste raket over. Jouw doel is nu om een pratende computer te gehoorzamen en opzoek te gaan naar onderdelen om het moederschip te redden. In het begin kan het wat lastig zijn om de gameplay onder de knie te krijgen, maar Shaun Inman’s The Last Rocket is wél heel verslavend waardoor je het blijft proberen!

ON NOVEMBER 1, Dia de los Angelitos (day of the little angels), it’s the deceased children who are remembered, and on November 2, Dia de los Muertos (day of the dead), it’s the adults. Rather than spending the day in mourning, the Mexicans celebrate. The Aztecs believe that departed souls occasionally return, and that this happens during the day. So, naturally, it would be a sin to waste those precious moments together in tears. Preparations for the day begin weeks in advance. Coffins made from sugar, marzipan and chocolate line the shelves of stores, and shop windows are filled with skeleton figures in costume, dancing, riding bikes, or just doing everyday things. CHEERFUL SKELETONS Families build altars in their homes overflowing with bread, fruit, candy, candles and decorations to welcome back their lost loved ones. Also standard on the altar: a bowl of water so the spirit can quench its thirst after the long journey. The eye-catching arch made of yellow marigolds on the altar is the portal that allows the soul to re-enter our world.

The day is celebrated throughout Mexico, but the biggest celebration is in the south of the country, where the culture of the indigenous people still flourishes. In the small city of Oaxaca, there are processions of cheerful skeletons through the streets as well as major public street parties with live music and dancing ‘dead’ people. NOT YOUR USUAL PICNIC During the day, many families clean the graves of their dead relatives and decorate them for the upcoming evening party. They place candles on a picnic blanket next to the grave, they put the relative’s favourite beverage on the tombstone and wait for the marching band to come along. This is when everyone parties. As a visitor, you can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the festivities with the families. Chances are you’ll also be invited to have a drink with some new Mexican friends – and also the spirits of their relatives, of course.

Er wordt herdacht met bitterzoete vrolijkheid dus voel je niet bezwaard om een wandeling langs de herdenkende families te maken. Integendeel: grote kans dat je wordt uitgenodigd om ook een glaasje te drinken op de tijdelijke terugkomst van familie, vrienden en geliefden.

PARTICIPATE You don’t need to have a family tomb in Mexico to enjoy the festivities. In Oaxaca, join one of the street parties, in costume or not. Walking at night in one of the cemeteries will provide you with another glimpse into the celebration, and you might even be invited to do a shot of tequila in honour of the dead.

ON THE ECO-LODGE Isla Yandup, where I’ll be spending the night, a woman dressed in traditional attire offers me a freshly caught Red Snapper. I imagine her coming home after work, swapping her yellow beaded garland, batik sarong and embroidered belt for a comfortable pair of jeans and a t-shirt saying ‘I need a beer’ as she installs herself in front of the tube. This, however, is an unlikely scenario as alcohol is prohibited on most of the Kunaislands and her clothes are not just some tourist attraction, but form an integral part of her Kuna identity. In her village Playón Chico, most women dress the same. The belts around their waists are called Molas, literally ‘clothes of the Kunas’, their main export product. And though there are women here who prefer a simple t-shirt and shorts, most of them are products of globalisation that through television shows (hence the antennas thatched to the palm leaf rooftops) and education has altered their priorities. Originally from Central America, the greatest number of Kuna people (around 32,000 of a 70,000 total) now live in this area. Their migrations were caused by wars, Spanish invaders, mosquito plagues and conflicts with natives. When they finally set foot here, the Panamanian government suppressed their customs, which led to a revolt and, eventually, a treaty. Now the Kunas have some degree of cultural autonomy. The islands are theirs, so they decide who gets to fish, sleep and eat on it. And every village has its own rules. Cats and dogs are not allowed and people go to bed at ten. Nobody really knows how many Kunas are living on Playón Chico, but there are between an estimated 2,000 and 3,000 people who are mainly living off seafood, coconuts and bananas.

In no time at all dozens of women and children are hopping up and down to the sound of the flute, making the price of one dollar suddenly seem like quite the bargain. Apparently a young girl down the road agrees with us. Instead of dancing, she holds a kitten in her arms. ‘Hello’, she smiles while she moves its front legs back and forth. An older lady with a tattooed nose (a token of beauty) is waiting in front of her cabin as another is showing us her handicrafts. Further down the road another traveller (two metres tall) is busted by a tiny Kuna woman (1.3 metres). Quickly he gives her a dollar and takes off. Now she points at me. ‘I have only four dollars,’ I reply. ‘And I still need to see the whole village.’ She believes me, but not until I show her the evidence on my camera. Disappointed she trudges away while the kids follow closely behind. I get the feeling, unless financially induced, this community isn’t keen on strangers, which is not a particularly bad thing. After all, this mechanism of survival delivered them their political and cultural freedom. On the main square a mural still alludes to the Revolution of 1925 when the Kunas rebelled against the Panamese government. ‘We waited until after the carnival,’ says Nadili, which means Daughter of the Stars. Apparently a drunk Panamanian is easier to beat.

MOON CHILD Apart from a degree of autonomy, the revolution also resulted in something else. A small boy with chapped lips, snow-white hair and sundamaged skin looks at me. This ‘moon child’ is a product of two Kunas whose bloodline is a little tangled – to put it euphemistically. No shame, because inbreeding has long been normalised here. In fact: it was the only way

Dat vindt kennelijk ook het kleine meisje verderop. In plaats van te dansen met de anderen, houdt ze een jong poesje in haar armen. ‘Hallo,’ lacht ze terwijl ze het voorpootje heen en weer beweegt. Een oudere dame met een soort tatoeage op haar neus (een schoonheidsideaal) staat te wachten voor haar hut, terwijl een ander haar handwerk laat zien. Verderop wordt een twee meter lange reisgenoot in z’n lurven gegrepen door een piepklein Kuna vrouwtje. Snel geeft hij haar een dollar en maakt zich uit de voeten. Nu wijst ze naar mij. ‘Ik heb vier dollar,’ antwoord ik. ‘En ik moet het hele dorp nog door.’ Ze gelooft me, maar wel pas nadat ik mijn foto’s heb laten zien. Teleurgesteld sjokt ze weg, terwijl de kinderen haar volgen. Het gevoel bekruipt me dat deze gemeenschap het niet zo op (niet betalende) vreemdelingen heeft. En daar kan ik alleen maar blij om zijn. Dat overlevingsmechanisme heeft ze immers hun politieke en culturele vrijheid opgeleverd. Op het centrale plein herinnert een muurschildering aan de revolutie van 1925, toen de Kuna’s in opstand kwamen tegen de regering. ‘We hebben gewacht tot na het carnaval,’ vertrouwt Nadili - wiens naam ‘Dochter van de sterren’ betekent - ons toe. Kennelijk is een dronken Panamees makkelijk te verslaan. MAANKINDEREN Behalve autonomie heeft de revolutie ze ook iets anders opgeleverd. Een klein ventje met gebarsten lippen, spierwitte haren en een door de zon aangetaste huid kijkt me vragend aan. Dit ‘maankind’ is een product van twee Kuna’s wier bloedlijn (iets teveel) verweven is. Geen schande, want inteelt was lange tijd de norm. SCHIPHOLMAGAZINE.COM

to keep the Kuna people together. ‘Much has changed,’ says Nadili who despite her Hispanic origins, is allowed to live here on Playón Chico. ‘Other Kunas,’ she says pointing to the jungle, ‘they have strict rules. This village is quite modern.’ As I step onto the boat, I have a last glance at the Indians who have returned to their daily routine. There’s a volleyball match going on, some guys seem bored, teenage girls are giggling and screaming kids are running through the streets. My remaining dollars quickly burn a hole in my pocket and I can’t help but jump off the boat and run back into the village. An old man, a few girls and two chaps at the beginning of their adult lives; perhaps these people truly are the Panamanian Last of the Mohicans. After all, what would happen to the Kunas if the Panamanian government were to find gold in this area, or worse yet, oil? I ponder the thought of a millionaire buying a couple of the untouched islands and exploiting them. ‘No chance’, laughs Nadili. ‘None of these 365 islands are for sale. And if that were the case it could only be sold to a Kuna.’ l

Want wat zou er gebeuren met de Kuna’s wanneer de Panamese regering hier goud vindt, of olie. Wat als een miljonair een paar eilanden koopt en uitbuit? ‘Weinig kans,’ lacht Dochter van de sterren. ‘Geen van de 365 eilanden is te koop. En als er al een verkocht zou worden, dan alleen aan een Kuna.’ l

‘I’m not a neat freak, I just keep things tidy for work’

So I guess you don’t need to pack much on these kinds of trips. Can you take me through the bag you’ve got with you?

I have a pair of jeans, an extra suit, two shirts in case I spill anything. Underwear, socks and my briefcase with a laptop.

Are you a neat freak? This suitcase is looking sharp.

Where have you come from and what are you doing at Schiphol?

�

I just got to Amsterdam last night for a business meeting and now I’m back at Schiphol to go back home to Spain.

Did you have a chance to do anything besides work while you were here?

�

I went straight from the airport to the hotel, then the hotel to the meeting and back to the airport. I didn’t even get to see Amsterdam! This is the way I travel most of the time.

No I’m not, I just keep things tidy for work.

Do you think you’ve forgotten anything?

�

I forgot my jogging outfit. I usually pack running shoes and some gym clothes. I need to stretch my legs after flying for a long time.

How often do you travel?

The Netherlands is often referred to as the ‘lowlands’. Why? Because half of the country is just one metre above sea level, and around 25 per cent is actually below it (including Schiphol Airport which is 4.5m below). Don’t worry – a complex system of dykes, dams, floodgates and dunes protects the country from the ever-present threat from the sea. The highest point in the country is 323 metres and is referred to as a ‘mountain’.

The name Holland, although generally accepted, is not actually the name of the country. Holland makes up two of the 12 provinces in the Netherlands. The nation hasn’t been called Holland since the 17th century, when the provinces Brabant, Overijsel, Utrecht and Gelderland were added to the official territory. During the 17th century, when it was still called Holland, The Dutch East India Company enjoyed a monopoly on business in the orient, which is why many countries called the country Holland and the name stuck.

Around 30 per cent of babies in the Netherlands are born at home – far more than in the US, UK and Japan, where only 1 per cent of deliveries take place in a home setting.

BICYCLE COUNTRY Since 1976 Holland has taken a liberal stance on ‘soft drugs’. One can buy up to five grams of marijuana and grow up to five plants at home. The sale of marijuana is decriminalised, but the large-scale production and wholesale of it is not. The DNRI (crime statistics institute) in Holland estimates that between 323 and 766 tonnes of marijuana are illegally produced each year, with anywhere between 18,000 and 42,000 grow operations. Holland has an estimated 363,000 marijuana users.

Population: 16,684,542 The Netherlands has around 15,000km of bicycle paths and almost every Dutch person owns a bike. There are around 16 million bikes – that’s twice the number of cars. Around 40,000 bikes are stolen annually, and those are just the thefts reported to the police. The most commonly given fine for cyclists is for a lack of lights and costs €60. At least 37 per cent of the population of Amsterdam rides a bike instead of using other forms of transport.

SINKING AMSTERDAM Amsterdam is built on poles because the ground is so soft. The poles ensure they can reach more solid ground, but in the past the buildings have often shifted, sunk and moved which is why almost all houses in Amsterdam are crooked.

DUTCH WEATHER ☔ Notoriously unpredictable, it is a common misconception that the Netherlands suffers from an extremely rainy climate. On average there is some form of precipitation seven per cent of the time, which equals about one hour and 40 minutes a day. Zurich, Milan and Munich are three European cities alone that have higher annual precipitation. The country enjoys a moderate maritime climate with cool summers and mild winters. From May through August the average hours of sun are around seven, and from November through January amount to about two.

VESTING BOURTANGE

Commissioned in 1580 by Willem of Orange, Bourtange Fortress was built on the border of present-day Germany. For 150 years the fortress served as a pivotal stronghold. By 1851 the fortress was abandoned and the remains turned into an agrarian village. Few buildings remained as reminders of a glorious past, but by the 1960s reconstructions commenced. Visitors can now travel back almost 300 years and marvel in the splendor that was once ‘Vesting Bourtange’.

Drowning in the tide on a daily basis, Terschelling, north of Germany and west of Denmark, is the second largest Waddeneiland in the Netherlands. There is 70km of bike trail and 30km of beach that embellish the lush natural landscapes. The extreme tidal conditions make for an abundance of feeding birds, but it’s the beautiful dunes and marshes that cover 80 per cent of the island that make it so special.

Wallibi Holland is a theme park in Biddinghuizen that through its tumultuous ownership structures in the past has been relatively well kept and regularly updated. Museum de Fundatie incorporates an eclectic variety of 7,000 different objects ranging from old and contemporary, to modern art and a collection of ethnographic works. Collector Dirk Hunnema founded the basis for the collection, but over the years many other privately held collections were added. The museum is rather large and its interior extremely modern. If Vienna reminds you of classical Mozart tunes, romantic carriages and people feasting on Schnitzel, then think again. Wakeboarding is one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in town.

Als je Wenen hoort denk je vast aan Mozart, romantische koetsritjes en Schnitzels groter dan je bord. Waar je misschien niet aan denkt is Wakeboarden; de snelst groeiende sport van de stad.

STANDING AT THE waterfront of Vienna’s Danube with a wetsuit on and a wakeboard strapped to your feet, it’s all about those few little moments that give you a rush of adrenaline from your head all the way down to your quivering toes.

DE TWINTIGERS EN dertigers die met hun wakeboard op de oever van de Donau staan, willen maar een ding: adrenaline. En dat krijgen ze door trucs te doen. Zoals de Moby Dick waarbij je 360 graden naar achteren draait. Of de Butterslide 180 waarbij je van richting verandert door met je board te draaien.

FLYING HIGH The 20 and 30-somethings who lend themselves to this type of thing spring from all corners of society and have one desire in common: ‘The challenge of knowing and showing some tricks,’ as one boarder explains. Although most require a lot of training like the Moby Dick, which involves a 180° and a 360° backside flip, anyone can try a Butterslide 180°: changing direction while sliding on the board. FAST AND FURIOUS While wakeboarding usually involves a motor boat towing boarders along the water, the Danube Island boasts a lift and a rope that do the job. The 900-metre-long track reaches speeds of up to 30km/h and comes with no major surprises so wake boarders can focus on their tricks. ‘It’s exciting, your whole body is in action and it’s a great way to be stretched to your limits,’ explains a local DJ who spends his entire summer at the lift.

Maar op dit eiland in de Donau is een 900 meter lange kabelbaan geïnstalleerd waarmee boarders dezelfde snelheid (30 kilometer per uur) halen. Aangezien het zomers behoorlijk warm kan zijn in Wenen, is dit de beste tijd om de kabelbaan uit te proberen. Maar verwacht niet dat je het rijk alleen hebt. Once temperatures reach 30 degrees, the venue becomes an absolute hot spot. ‘Instead of going to the gym after work, I prefer to come here to empty my mind,’ says a guy undressing in front of me. I think I can see why. It’s cheap: one hour of wakeboarding costs €20 and a day ticket €50 - rental board and wetsuit included. Additionally the track is within throwing distance of the center of town. Organising boat rentals and wakeboarding equipment in Vienna is a difficult task and costs anywhere from €200 per day. The closest wakeboarding alternative is the Danube in upper Austria or at Neusiedler Lake, both take at least an hour to get to from Vienna. MORE THAN A TINY SURFBOARD Wakeboarding, which looks like surfing on an undersized board, was introduced in the 1980s as a combination of water skiing, surfing and snowboarding. It became an instant success, so much so people started looking for faster and more agile ways to ride the wake. Surfboard legend Allan Byrne created a smaller board with foot straps called ‘the skurfer’, which most closely resembles today’s wakeboard. Fun and thrill aside, is it safe? My question needed no answer when I saw a brave beginner attempt a bold jump without wearing a helmet, followed by a spectacular crash and severe ringing in his ears. Some wise advice was given to the man by one of the lift’s team members: ‘Never overestimate yourself as a beginner.’ RELENTLESS ACTION UNTIL SUNSET For those who just come to take a glimpse at other people’s wakeboard action, the venue also serves as, what owner Michael Machek calls: a laid-back urban beach. ‘I like watching my boyfriend trying out some new stunts,’ says a young girl lying next to the water while reading a magazine and catching a tan on a lounger. The atmosphere here is lively as the beach crowd shares in the thrills of the daredevils. PRIVATE PARTY If you want to try out your skills, but you don’t fancy failing in front of a crowd, you can rent out the facility for an hourly rate of €180 before noon and €250 in the afternoon if reservations are made three days in advance. Whether it’s just watching the spectacle or trying it out yourself, the Viennese Wakeboarding lift is an inherent part of the city’s outdoor attractions and worth a visit for those who want a unique experience in Vienna. l 82

Andere spots (er is er nog een aan de Donau en een andere bij de Neusiedlersee) liggen op een uur rijden vanaf de stad. Met andere woorden: de keuze voor deze kabelbaan is snel gemaakt.

HOW TO GET THERE FROM SCHIPHOL

Wakeboarden is een combinatie van waterskiën, surfen en snowboarden en dateert uit 1980. Toen werd het eerste wakeboard - een soort ondermaatse surfplank- geïntroduceerd. De sport bleek direct zo’n succes dat mensen wereldwijd op zoek gingen naar boards waarmee ze nog beter en harder konden varen. Dat werd de kleine plank met de voetriemen die we nu kennen als de skurfer. NIET OVERSCHATTEN Dat is natuurlijk allemaal leuk en aardig, maar is het ook veilig? Niet zonder helm. Dat blijkt wanneer een beginner zo hard op het water terecht komt dat zijn oren ervan suizen. Het personeel kijkt er niet meer van op. Niet voor niets bieden ze bij de kabelbaan ook cursussen aan. ‘Beginners overschatten zichzelf.’ Op het stadsstrand naast de kabelbaan, ligt een meisje een tijdschrift te lezen. ‘Ik vind het leuk om naar mijn vriend te kijken als hij een paar nieuwe stunts uitprobeert,’ zegt ze. Of die beginners het ook leuk vinden, is de vraag. Maar zij hebben nog altijd de mogelijkheid om de kabelbaan te reserveren voor privégebruik. Dat kost (met € 180 per uur in de ochtend en € 250 per uur in de middag) wel iets meer. Maar dan heb je ook wat. l

The layered design of the facade gives the departure lounge its own identity and typical Dutch symbols like flowers, cheese and bread are repeated throughout the central square.

GOING GREEN Among the visual highlights is the House of Tulips – a flower shop with a green glasshouse suspended in the air. Its green design combines two Dutch icons: a typical Amsterdam townhouse and a greenhouse. Every morning a hydraulic system lifts up the house, creating the sunny atmosphere of a flower market underneath.
