NORTHERN LIGHTS Alaska’s not only home to a certain soccer mom with political aspirations, but also a perfect place to see the best light show on Earth. Alternatively known as aurora borealis, this magnificent natural light display occurs close to Earth’s magnetic poles, such as the Arctic and Antarctic regions, and has been dubbed the ‘Dance of Spirits’ by Native Americans. As solar particles clash with atoms in the planet’s high altitude atmosphere, green, yellow, blue and even red streaks illuminate the night sky. December is one of the best times to spot an aurora, so what are you waiting for? Alaska is behalve de thuishaven van Sarah Palin ook dé plek om een spectaculaire lichtshow te zien. A SUNDAE TO REMEMBER We’ve all heard of ‘gold diggers’, but thanks to established New York restaurant Serendipity 3, the term ‘gold eaters’ might catch on. Its Golden Opulence sundae mixes Tahitian vanilla ice cream, Madagascar vanilla beans and pieces of rare Venezuelan chocolate - and tops it off with an edible 23-carat gold leaf. Add some gold-drenched almonds and a serving of Grande Passion caviar complete with a mother of pearl spoon, and you got yourself the most extravagant dessert in the world. At $1000 a pop, it’s also one of the most expensive ones, but don’t forget you can keep the Baccarat crystal goblet it comes in and toast to your sweet tooth!

Chances are if you’re keen to land on the moon, this is one dream you won’t be crossing off your bucket list any time soon. Your best bet is probably to explore the unique lunar landscape of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historical region of Cappadocia in Central Anatolia, Turkey. The eponymous, five-star Cappadocia Cave Resort was built directly into the mountain and offers – besides the experience of living in a luxurious cave – spa treatments, steam baths, massage for couples, pools, bars, restaurants and a wine cellar. While you’re there, don’t miss the Göreme Open Air Museum, a collection of Byzantine churches filled with spectacular frescoes. 12

The original Orient Express passenger route train service used to run from Paris to Istanbul, but it fell victim to the introduction of high-speed trains and ceased its operations in 2009. Luckily, the Venice-Simplon Orient Express picked up where its predecessor left off, travelling from London to Venice and reinstating the Paris-Istanbul course among other European destinations. The re-vamped version of a train service that fueled the imagination of many writers, including crime queen Agatha Christie, still has 1920s and 1930s Art Deco carriages fit with vintage cabins that can convert from daytime sitting to comfy beds at night, a restaurant and bar. Let the champagne flow and the good times roll!

Horlogemerk Patek Philippe is 160 jaar geleden opgericht door de Pool Antoni Patek en de Fransman Adrien Philippe. Inmiddels staat dit in Genève gevestigde bedrijf synoniem aan luxe en innovatie. Founded 160 years ago by Pole Antoni Patek and Frenchman Adrien Philippe, the Genevabased watch brand Patek Philippe has been synonymous with luxury and innovation. In the 1930s, American banking tycoon Henry Graves Jr. asked the company to make a 24-function pocket watch, nicknamed ‘The Supercomplication’, which took four years to complete and was sold after his death for a whopping €8,000,000. In fact, it holds the record for the most expensive watch ever sold.

WORLDS BEST BITES In 2010, Noma, a two-Michelin star eatery, dethroned elBulli from the coveted top spot of Best Restaurant in the World, as ranked by the prestigious Restaurant magazine, and maintained its reign in 2011. It will come as little surprise that chef René Redzepi, trained at elBulli among other renowned restaurants, co-founded this dockside haven for Nordic cuisine in Copenhagen. Try Noma Nassaaq, a 12-course, four-hour-long culinary adventure that will only set you back 1495 DKK, which is about €200. This particular menu features dishes such as dried scallops with biodynamic grains, hazelnuts and squid ink sauce.

Sisters back in the Netherlands for their grandfather’s 90th birthday party
‘We are originally from the the Netherlands, but we moved to Norway about five years ago. We came back here to attend my grandpa’s 90th birthday which ended up being a lovely family reunion. When we’re in Norway we miss our family back in the Netherlands, but we prefer living there. The nature, the culture, the people, it’s such a peaceful place.’
‘Vijf jaar geleden zijn we naar Noorwegen geëmigreerd. We waren in Nederland voor mijn opa’s 90ste verjaardag. Dat werd een gezellige familiereünie. Als we in Noorwegen zijn, missen we iedereen enorm, maar toch wonen we liever daar. De natuur, de cultuur, de mensen: het is zo’n rustige plek.’

The plan is to study here for a year then go back to Sweden and finally live in the same city together.’

‘Ik studeer nu ongeveer een maand in Nederland en zij is me vanuit Zweden komen opzoeken. We zijn ongeveer een half jaar samen, maar in Zweden studeerden we ook al ieder in een andere stad. We hebben dus eigenlijk altijd een lange afstandsrelatie gehad. Het plan is om hier een jaar te studeren, dan terug te gaan naar Zweden en eindelijk in dezelfde stad samen te wonen.’

‘Years ago, we studied in the Netherlands so we’re back to visit old friends. We miss the Netherlands, especially because we made such close friends here so it’ll be great to see them again. The best thing about living here is that you don’t have to speak Dutch and you can still get by. The only downside is it’s hard to integrate into Dutch culture because it’s so easy not to learn the language.’

THE WIRE
Mildred Pierce is a proud woman who, in post-Depression L.A., is met with a divorce and other destructive forces of nature. Forced to adapt to a role that her ungratefully poisonous daughter seems unable to cope with, the grass widow thrives in her new life. Kate Winslet portrays Mildred, richly conveying even the most nuanced of emotions. The miniseries’ flawless cinematography, detailed set design and impeccable costumes create an authentic canvas of a grim time. The show’s pace is slow and sometimes dull, but the underlying narrative of fiercely independent women and unsupportive men in a time tied inherently to class limitations is a moving one.
Like the cover of a university brochure Community brings together a quintessential motley crew of socially distinctive subcultures. In a literal sense the sitcom is about an ex-lawyer, a social outcast, a jock, a bigot, a single mother, a know-it-all and a hipster-feminist studying for classes at their community college all the while becoming an unlikely family. Allegorically, however, the show is a parody of sitcoms that through metareference, irony and a heap of satire pokes fun at mass media and social interactions at large. In a creative, witty and usually colourful way Community is always funny, often innovative and occasionally profound.
Inner-city drug syndicates are elaborate enough, but The Wire delves further into the politics around such a structure and how everyone from cops and politicians, to drug lords and junkies capitalise upon it. Created by former police and journalists, the narratives are highly intelligent, the character complexity is almost documentary and the gritty realism of the Baltimore backdrop is unparalleled. The Wire is the exact opposite of casual viewing and requires a high viewer engagement, but through five seasons will unfold a rich tapestry of corruption, and how that corruption is weaved into the social fabric of a city.
Mildred Pierce is een trotse vrouw die zich, in het LA van na de economische depressie, geconfronteerd ziet met een echtscheiding en andere nare ontwikkelingen. Verplicht om zich te schikken in een rol waaraan haar ontevreden dochter niet kan wennen, gedijt ze prima in haar nieuwe leven. Kate Winslet slaagt erin om de meest genuanceerde emoties over te brengen. De show is traag en soms saai, maar het verhaal van de onafhankelijke vrouw en niet meewerkende man in een tijd van klassenverschillen raakt je wel.
Zoals een universiteitsbrochure een bonte mengeling van maatschappelijk onderscheidende subculturen laat zien, doet deze serie dat ook. We hebben een ex-advocaat, een outcast, een sport Billy, een onverdraagzaam persoon, een alleenstaande moeder, een betweter en een feministische hipster. Eigenlijk drijft deze komedie vooral de spot met massamedia en sociale interacties in het algemeen. En dat gebeurt op een creatieve, geestige en meestal kleurrijke manier. Community is altijd grappig, vaak innovatief en soms diepgaand.
Randstedelijke drugsnetwerken zijn ingewikkeld. The Wire duikt er vol in. De serie laat zien hoe iedereen, van politie-agenten en politici, drugsbaronnen en junkies er harde munt uitslaan. Omdat het script is geschreven door oud-politiemensen en journalisten, zijn de verhaallijnen geloofwaardig en de personages haast documentarisch. The Wire is niet licht verteerbaar maar na vijf seizoenen ontvouwt zich een wandkleed van corruptie, verweven met de stad en z’n inwoners. Zwart wordt wit, goed blijkt slecht en al het andere is ineens grijs.

From the first soothing inflections of Bublé’s baritone voice on Christmas we know that ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’. With lots of horn and plenty of swing Bublé confidently makes Christmas classics like ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ and Elvis’ masterpiece ‘Blue Christmas’ his own. The Puppini Sisters introduce a nostalgic doo-wop twist that somehow makes ‘Jingle Bells’ contemporary; just as Shania’s vocals on ‘White Christmas’ make for a novel duet. ‘Santa Baby’ is injected with testosterone as Bublé croons, tongue solidly-in-cheek, ‘Santa buddy’. The classics are revived without reinventing them, making Christmas the best stocking filler of the season.
A 60s Chevy is to cars what The Black Keys are to music; classic and characteristically American. The first song on the namesake El Camino, ‘Lonely Boy’, is a fast-paced tune about the cruelty of infidelity. If the White Stripes, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Eels were to consummate a musical marriage ‘Gold on The Ceiling’ is what they would give birth to. The moving lyrics on ‘Submarines’ are raw and honest while Dan’s guitar riffs enable much needed intensity here. ‘Sister’ is an immense amount of upbeat alt-bluesrock fun. Although slightly more radio friendly than previous albums, El Camino, or the road, is suited for just that – or in your case, the air!
Coldplay must have had an equally tough time naming their 5th record Mylo Xyloto (My-low Zy-letoe) as Chris and Gwyneth did naming their children Apple and Moses. Chosen to sound interesting, the name references nothing and is ultimately indicative of the entire album: meaningless, confusing but curiously fun sounding. In its ambitions to become an electronic pop glazed ensemble, part of the band’s appeal is lost. The eclectic mix of electronics and acoustics is as chaotic as a headless chicken on crack, but credit is due for ‘Paradise’ and ‘Waterfall’ in becoming catchy dance-pop anthems. The combination of avarage lyrics and over-zealous production means the record is as disappointing as its title.

Hoewel dit album iets te radio vriendelijk is voor The Black Keys, is El Camino een heerlijke plaat voor onderweg.
Bij het zoeken naar een naam voor dit 5e album, moet Coldplay het net zo moeilijk hebben gehad als Chris en Gwyneth toen ze hun kinderen Apple en Moses noemden. Mylo Xyloto klinkt interessant, maar betekent niets. In hun poging om als een elektronisch pop-ensemble te klinken, is de band veel aantrekkingskracht verloren. Met uitzondering van dancepopnummers ‘Paradise’ en ‘Waterval’, klinkt de mix van elektronica en akoestiek chaotisch. Voeg er magere teksten aan toe, en je hebt een plaat die even teleurstellend is als de naam.

The cover art of Colplay’s third studio album X&Y displays a number of coloured blocks. The blocks are arranged in a code designed by Emile Baudot. It is thought to be the first form of digital communication. The code connotes 1s and 0s in 5-digit sequences that correspond to particular letters of the alphabet. The result reads 10111 and 10101, X and Y. At the time the cover first went to print there was an error and the code read ‘x96’. DUBAI Redefining Luxury From the desert it is rising: Dubai, the world’s newest metropolis and self-proclaimed capital of decadence. There’s no better city in which to celebrate like it’s your last day on earth.

Dubai is very now. Monumental investment by the government and an extremely favourable tax climate has turned the former desert village into a hotspot for both business and upmarket tourists practically overnight. ‘Build it and they will come’ was the philosophy behind a construction boom that started in the 1990s and continues, though noticeably slower, to this day. Nowhere on the planet will you find more (over the top) luxury than here.
Dubai is erg nú. Door forse investeringen van de overheid en het gunstige fiscale klimaat is dit voormalige woestijndorp veranderd in de ultieme hotspot voor zowel zakenreizigers als toeristen. ‘Bouw het en ze komen’ was de filosofie achter de bouwexplosie die in de jaren ‘90 begon en vandaag de dag nog steeds (in mindere mate) gaande is. Nergens op de planeet vind je meer over de top luxe dan hier.
Sometimes you don’t even have to look for it. When I visited, temperatures rose well over 40C. Desperate to cool off, I headed for my hotel’s pool where a lifeguard/servant politely inquired if he should open my parasol. I told him that would be great and took off for a swim. No sooner was I out of the water when the same man appeared, asking whether I wanted a white, red or black towel. I jokingly demanded a yellow one, forcing him to utter a humble apology. ‘I’m so sorry sir, but we don’t have yellow towels.’ I assured the guard that I was only kidding and would be very content with a white towel. Or a red one.
Soms hoef je er niet eens naar te zoeken. Toen ik de stad bezocht was het ruim 40 graden buiten. Wanhopig op zoek naar wat verkoeling, ging ik naar het zwembad van mijn hotel. Daar vroeg een badmeester beleefd of hij mijn parasol moest openen. ‘Dat zou geweldig zijn,’ zei ik en nam een duik. Nauwelijks was ik uit het water of dezelfde man verscheen weer. Dit keer vroeg hij of ik een witte, rode of zwarte handdoek wilde. Ik vroeg voor de grap een gele. ‘Het spijt me meneer, maar we hebben geen gele handdoeken,’ was zijn nederige reactie. Ik verzekerde hem dat het maar een grapje was en nam genoegen met een witte handdoek. Of een rode.
Mind you, I wasn’t staying at the 7-star Burj Al Arab, but in a hotel that is considered modest by Dubai standards...

FESTIVAL FEVER Dubai is known for its many festivals, especially during the cooler winter months. From December 7-14, the Dubai International Film Festival shines a light on Middle Eastern cinema, while the Dubai Desert Classic brings the world’s best golfers to the city in February.
LIVING LIFE IN LUXURY The thriving economy has attracted an army of expats to Dubai. Contrary to popular belief, they don’t all live like sheiks. You have to work really hard to get by here. Even though property prices have dropped 55 per cent since the start of the worldwide recession in 2008, Dubai is still a very expensive place to live. But when you do make it big, or if you happen to be a sports millionaire, there’s no better city to splurge in. By buying a villa at Palm Jumeirah, for example. This man-made, palm-shaped island is one of the biggest Dubai projects. The first residents moved into their shiny new houses four years ago. Secluded from the mainland and surrounded by water, Palm Jumeirah is what you’d call a ‘tropical residential area’. Most people not only own a car (or three), but also have a boat moored at their private beach to go sailing on a lazy afternoon. Marine life was sustained and even actively stimulated during reclamation work for Palm Jumeirah. Where mere mortals have to make do with a boring park near their home, residents here get to swim and dive in crystal clear water filled with exotic fish. This goes to show that living in luxury is about more than just bling bling, extravagant nightclubs, pools filled with champagne and girls in tiny bikinis. It’s about quality of life. Dubai aims to condense the very best planet earth has to offer. Throw in 360 days of sunshine per year and you’ll understand why this city is considered paradise by almost everyone who can afford to live there. A BUCKET LIST DESTINATION ‘I am the magnet that attracts the wide-eyed tourist, eagerly catching their postcard moment, the centre for the world’s finest shopping, dining and entertainment and home for the world’s elite… more than just a moment in time, I define moments for future generations… I am Burj Khalifa.’

Je moet hard werken om rond te komen in Dubai. En hoewel de huizenprijzen met 55 procent zijn gedaald sinds het begin van de wereldwijde recessie in 2008, is het nog steeds een dure plek om te wonen. Maar als je genoeg verdient of toevallig toch al miljonair bent, is er geen betere plek denkbaar om je in luxe onder te dompelen. Bijvoorbeeld door een villa in Palm Jumeirah te kopen. Textile, gold and spice souks bustle with even more activity than usual, while the big malls offer discounts of up to 75 per cent. The party is completed by music concerts, children’s events, fashion shows and fireworks. Good to know: Emirates and most other airlines offer a higher baggage allowance on outbound flights during the festival. You’re gonna need it.

This is a few lines from the poem that welcomes visitors to the world’s tallest manmade structure. Dubai is proud of its crowning glory and has no reservations about showing it. Pumping music, flashing video and a trippy lightshow inside the world’s fastest elevators make it seem like you’re actually in the world’s smallest disco. But when you step onto the observation deck, high above the rumble of city life, all gets quiet. It’s the perfect place to ponder what has happened in Dubai. Virtually everything you see below wasn’t there just 20 years ago. Except for the desert, of course, which still dominates the horizon behind a dazzling number of construction cranes. 30

Google ‘Dubai 1990 2003’ if you want to see a truly mind-blowing photo. Two actually. The desert town on the first one seems to have little in common with the skyscraper city on the second. Yet the pictures were taken from the same position in Dubai just 13 years apart...

The city’s economy was based on fishing and pearl export for centuries. But when the pearl market collapsed during the Great Depression of the 1930s, so did Dubai. Recovery was very slow: electricity and running water didn’t reach the city until the 1950s. The real turnaround came with the discovery of oil in 1966 and the consequent formation of the United Arabian Emirates five years later. Another great bump followed in the 1990s. As a consequence of the Persian Gulf War, many foreign trading communities in the Middle East moved their businesses to Dubai and oil prices went through the roof. Benefits were rapidly invested in infrastructure and city development. The rest is history. DE GESCHIEDENIS IN EEN NOTENDOP Wil je een paar bizarre foto’s zien? Google dan ‘Dubai 1990 2003’. De woestijnstad op de eerste foto lijkt te weinig gemeen hebben met de tweede. Toch werd de tweede foto 13 jaar later vanuit exact dezelfde positie genomen. Eeuwenlang draaide de economie om visserij en om de export van parels. Toen de parelmarkt instortte tijdens de Grote Depressie van de jaren ‘30, heeft het lang geduurd voor Dubai zich kon herstellen. Tot de jaren ’50 was er geen elektriciteit en stromend water. De ommekeer kwam in 1966 toen er olie werd ontdekt en de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten vijf jaar later werden gevormd. Toen in de jaren ’90 als gevolg van de Perzische Golfoorlog veel buitenlandse bedrijven verhuisden naar Dubai ging de olieprijs door het dak. Er werd volop geïnvesteerd in de infrastructuur en de stedelijke ontwikkeling. De rest is geschiedenis.

Calling Dubai a bucket list destination for tourists would have been absurd in the early 1990s. But now Burj Khalifa is just one of many reasons to visit. Go for the surreal contrast between the old city and the new centre. Go for skiing in tropical temperatures. Go for all kinds of water sports. Go for the food, the gold or the experience of sleeping underwater in a ‘lost chamber suite’ at the Atlantis Hotel. You’ll have a wall-to-wall view of their enormous aquarium. If your religion is called shopping, the many cathedral-like malls are most certainly a highlight. The Dubai Mall is the biggest in the world with over 1200 high-end stores. Spoiled for choice? There’s always the possibility of hiring a personal assistant who will gladly advise you on what to wear this winter. And should your feet get tired, an onsite cinema and yet another aquarium provide some well-deserved relaxation. This city is seriously obsessed with water. Just outside the mall stands the biggest fountain in the world (this is getting old, isn’t
Dubai the capital of decadence: is it just a fairytale? it?), complete with Arabic tunes and western love songs. Slightly kitsch, yes, but there is something undeniably exciting about water being shot 150 metres upwards in an area that was completely barren just two decades back. Speaking of sand, perhaps the most decadent Dubai experience can be found at the Al Maha Desert Resort, situated inside the Dubai conservation centre. Oryx, gazelle and a wide variety of birds roam freely around your Bedouinstyle villa while a ‘personal guest service coordinator’ makes sure you get pampered. Fancy horse riding over sand dunes in the morning, having a massage in the afternoon and eating world-class food in the evening? It sounds pretty good to me. Watching the sun set over the desert from your private infinity pool, you might be tempted to pinch yourself: can this actually be real?
DROOMBESTEMMING ‘Ik ben de magneet voor de toerist die op zoek is naar het ultieme ansichtkaartmoment; het centrum van ‘s werelds beste winkels, restaurants en entertainment; thuis voor de elite van de wereld... Ik definieer meer dan een moment in de tijd. Ik definieer de toekomst... Ik ben Burj Khalifa. “ Dit zijn een paar (vrij vertaalde) regels uit het gedicht dat bezoekers welkom heet in ‘s werelds grootste kunstmatig aangelegde stad. Dubai is onomstotelijk trots op haar kroon. In een van de snelste liften ter wereld klinkt opzwepende muziek, knipperen video’s en is een hallucinerende lichtshow gaande. Ik waan me in een mini disco. Maar eenmaal op het observatiedek, hoog boven het gerommel van het stadsleven, wordt alles stil. Dit is de perfecte plek om na te denken over wat er allemaal gebeurd is. Vrijwel alles wat onder mij ligt, bestond 20 jaar geleden nog niet. Behalve de woestijn natuurlijk die, achter een duizelingwekkend aantal bouwkranen, de horizon domineert. In de jaren ’90 was het absurd geweest om Dubai als droombestemming te definieren, maar nu is Burj Khalifa slechts een van de vele redenen om de stad te bezoeken. Andere redenen zijn bijvoorbeeld het surrealistische contrast tussen de oude stad en het nieuwe centrum, het skiën in tropische temperaturen, de watersport, het eten, het goud en de mogelijkheid om onder water te slapen in een ‘verloren kamer suite’ in het Atlantis hotel waarin de muren van glas ervoor zorgen dat je je in een gigantisch aquarium waant. En als jouw religie shoppen is, zijn de kathedraalachtige winkelcentra ook zeker een hoogtepunt. Met meer dan 1200 (dure) winkels is The Dubai Mall het grootste in de wereld. Ben je liever lui dan moe? Dan kan je altijd een personal assistent inhuren die je vertelt wat je aan moet deze winter. Moe van het lopen? Dan kom je tot rust komen in de ingebouwde bioscoop of bij het zoveelste aquarium. Deze stad lijkt geobsedeerd door water. Net buiten het winkelcentrum staat de grootste fontein van de wereld (ja,ja, nu weten we het wel) compleet met Arabische klanken en Westerse liefdesliedjes. Een beetje kitsch is het wel. REDEFINING DUBAI Dubai’s ambitions were hit hard by the worldwide recession in 2008. Major projects had to be cancelled or suspended indefinitely. Others, like ‘The World’, were sent into a coma. This artificial archipelago of around 250 islands in the shape of a world map is ready for development, but demand is very low in these insecure times. And there’s an even bigger problem: it seems that the islands are slowly sinking back into the Persian Gulf.

So was the whole concept of Dubai, capital of decadence, just a fairytale? A mirage of impossible dreams betrayed by reality? Probably not. Recent reports show that the city is bouncing back from its debt crisis in 2009. Things have changed, though. Dubai famously redefined luxury, but now faces an even greater challenge: redefining itself. The boom of the mid2000s relied heavily on property, construction and finance. So much so that the city currently has more real-estate than it knows what to do with. Dubai’s rulers are talking about going ‘back to basics’: trade, logistics and above all, tourism.

But since tourists have less spending power than they did before the economic meltdown, Dubai faces the difficult task of scaling back without losing its image as a premier destination for upmarket travelers. Turning the megalomaniac malls into discount joints will hardly do, but more emphasis is definitely being laid on regional character and exclusivity. ‘Why buy Gucci when you can get locally designed handbags not available anywhere else?’ might be the new motto. If there’s one city that can change our perception of luxury again, it’s surely Dubai. l

EN Does The Virgin Suicides ring a bell? And what about Middlesex? They’re both the works of the American Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Jeffrey Eugenides, who recently published his third book. Here’s an exclusive sneak preview. g
EARLY JUNE, PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island, the sun up for almost two hours already, lighting up the pale bay and the smokestacks of the Narragansett Electric factory, rising like the sun on the Brown University seal emblazoned on all the pennants and banners draped up over campus, a sun with a sagacious face, representing knowledge. But this sun — the one over Providence — was doing the metaphorical sun one better, because the founders of the university, in their Baptist pessimism, had chosen to depict the light of knowledge enshrouded by clouds, indicating that ignorance had not yet been dispelled from the human realm, whereas the actual sun was just now fighting its way through cloud cover, sending down splintered beams of light and giving hope to the squadrons of parents, who’d been soaked and frozen all weekend, that the unseasonable weather might not ruin the day’s festivities. All over College Hill, in the geometric gardens of the Georgian mansions, the magnolia-scented front yards of Victorians, along brick sidewalks running past black iron fences like those in a Charles Addams cartoon or a Lovecraft story; outside the art studios at the Rhode Island School of Design, where one painting major, having stayed up all night to work, was blaring Patti Smith; 46

shining off the instruments (tuba and trumpet, respectively) of the two members of the Brown marching band who had arrived early at the meeting point and were nervously looking around, wondering where everyone else was; brightening the cobblestone side streets that led downhill to the polluted river, the sun was shining on every brass doorknob, insect wing, and blade of grass. And, in concert with the suddenly flooding light, like a starting gun for all the activity, the doorbell in Madeleine’s fourth- floor apartment began, clamorously, insistently, to ring.
The problem was that Madeleine, for the first time in her life, wanted no part of it
The pulse reached her less as a sound than as a sensation, an electric shock shooting up her spine. In one motion Madeleine tore the pillow off her head and sat up in bed. She knew who was ringing the buzzer. It was her parents. She’d agreed to meet Alton and Phyllida for breakfast at 7:30. She’d made this plan with them two months ago, in April, and now here they were, at the appointed time, in their eager, dependable way. That Alton and Phyllida had driven up from New Jersey to see her graduate, that what they were here to celebrate today wasn’t only her achievement but their own as parents, had nothing wrong
or unexpected about it. The problem was that Madeleine, for the first time in her life, wanted no part of it. She wasn’t proud of herself. She was in no mood to celebrate. She’d lost faith in the significance of the day and what the day represented. She considered not answering. But she knew that if she didn’t answer, one of her roommates would, and then she’d have to explain where she’d disappeared to last night, and with whom. Therefore, Madeleine slid out of the bed and reluctantly stood up. This seemed to go well for a moment, standing up. Her head felt curiously light, as if hollowed out. But then the blood, draining from her skull like sand from an hourglass, hit a bottleneck, and the back of her head exploded in pain. In the midst of this barrage, like the furious core from which it emanated, the buzzer erupted again. She came out of her bedroom and stumbled in bare feet to the intercom in the hall, slapping the speak button to silence the buzzer. “Hello?” “What’s the matter? Didn’t you hear the bell?” It was Alton’s voice, as deep and commanding as ever, despite the fact that it was issuing from a tiny speaker. “Sorry,” Madeleine said. “I was in the shower.” “Likely story. Will you let us in, please?” Madeleine didn’t want to. She needed to wash up first. “I’m coming down,” she said. This time, she held down the speak button too long, cutting off Alton’s response. She pressed it again and said, “Daddy?” but while she was speaking, Alton must have been speaking, too, because when she pressed LISTEN all that came through was static.

BEGIN JUNI, PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island _ de zon was al bijna twee uur op en verlichtte de bleke baai en de hoge schoorstenen van de elektriciteitscentrale van Narragansett; hij steeg aan de hemel zoals de zon op het beeldmerk van Brown University op alle wimpels en banieren die over de hele campus hingen, een zon met een schrander gezicht dat kennis symboliseerde. Maar de echte zon _ de zon boven Providence _ versloeg de metaforische zon op één punt: de stichters van de universiteit hadden in hun doopsgezinde pessimisme verkozen het licht van de kennis versluierd door wolken af te beelden om erop te wijzen dat de onwetendheid nog niet uit het rijk der mensen verdreven was, terwijl de echte zon zich inmiddels door het wolkendek heen worstelde en hier en daar al een paar stralen licht omlaag zond naar de groepjes ouders die het hele weekend kou hadden geleden en drijfnat waren geregend, maar nu weer hoop konden koesteren dat het onverwacht slechte weer de feestelijkheden van deze dag niet in de war zou sturen. De zon bescheen heel College Hill, de geometrische tuinen van de grote vroegtwintigste-eeuwse herenhuizen, de naar magnolia geurende voortuinen van victoriaanse huizen, de bestrate trottoirs langs de zware ijzeren hekken als in een cartoon van Charles Addams of een verhaal van Lovecraft, de ateliers van de Rhode Island School of Design, waar een student die de hele nacht was opgebleven om te schilderen, keihard Patti Smith draaide; het licht weerkaatste van de instrumenten (respectievelijk een tuba en een trompet) van twee leden van de Brown Marching Band die al vroeg op de afgesproken plek waren en zenuwachtig om zich heen keken waar alle anderen bleven; de stralen verlichtten de met kinderkopjes geplaveide zijstraten die omlaag liepen naar de vervuilde rivier,
en er viel zonlicht op alle insectenvleugels, grassprietjes en geelkoperen deurknoppen. En als muzikale begeleiding van het plotseling alles overstromende licht, als startschot voor alle gebeurtenissen van die dag, ging nu in Madeleines appartement op de derde verdieping luidruchtig en hardnekkig de bel.

Er was op zich niets onverwachts of verkeerds aan dat Alton en Phyllida met de auto uit New Jersey waren gekomen om bij de diploma-uitreiking te zijn of dat ze vandaag niet alleen haar prestatie, maar ook hun eigen goede ouderschap kwamen vieren. Het probleem was alleen dat Madeleine daar voor het eerst van haar leven
niets mee te maken wilde hebben. Ze was niet trots op zichzelf. Ze was niet in de stemming om feest te vieren. Ze had geen vertrouwen meer in het belang van deze dag of alles wat die vertegenwoordigde. Ze overwoog niet open te doen. Maar ze wist dat een van haar huisgenoten het anders wel zou doen, en dan moest ze uitleggen waarheen en met wie ze er gisteravond tussenuit geknepen was. Dus liet ze zich maar uit bed glijden en stond met tegenzin op. Dat leek heel even goed te gaan. Haar hoofd voelde merkwaardig licht aan, alsof het uitgehold was. Maar toen stuitte het bloed, dat als zand uit een zandloper uit haar schedel wegstroomde, op een knelpunt en de pijn explodeerde in haar achterhoofd. Te midden van die gruwelijke stuwing barstte de bel weer los alsof die de ziedende kern was waar alle ellende uit voortkwam. Ze strompelde op blote voeten haar slaapkamer uit, naar de intercom in de hal, en bonkte op de spreekknop om de zoemer het zwijgen op te leggen. ‘Wie is daar?’ ‘Wat is er? Had je de bel niet gehoord?’ Dat was Altons stem, diep en imposant als altijd, zelfs al kwam hij door een heel klein speakertje. ‘Sorry,’ zei Madeleine, ‘ik stond onder de douche.’ ‘Jaja. Kun je dan nu even opendoen?’ Daar had ze geen zin in. Ze moest zich eerst wassen. ‘Ik kom wel naar beneden,’ zei ze. Ditmaal hield ze de spreekknop te lang ingedrukt, zodat ze Altons antwoord afbrak. Toen drukte ze nog een keer en zei: ‘Pap?’, maar terwijl ze dat zei, sprak Alton waarschijnlijk ook, want toen ze op ‘luisteren’ drukte, hoorde ze alleen statisch geknetter. It has the world’s lowest population density, abundant wildlife, virgin landscapes and varied ecosystems. The lack of infrastructure and Shamanistic beliefs have protected the country from overdevelopment. Climate: The weather in the Altai Mountains can be extremely temperamental. Winters are long and very cold and summers are cool. Even in summer you can experience four seasons in a day. Driving towards the Altai Mountains it’s easy to imagine the followers of the warlord Genghis Khan moving up the vast wide plains to the border with China in the 12th century. Camels, yaks and sheep dot the dry landscape, sometimes accompanied by a lonely herdsman on horseback and a kite in the sky. Our Mongolian guide Jagaa picks us up from the airport of the dusty provincial capital Ölgii, in his old-school Russian jeep. ‘Do you suffer from motion sickness?’ I begin to understand his concern as we continuously bounce on and off scattered rocks and bumpy roads. NOMAD LIFE The scenic drive towards the Kazakh people takes a couple of days. During the ride we pass magnificent rough landscapes, ride horses and hike a snow-capped mountain of 3300 metres. To get into the nomadic lifestyle we visit several nomadic families along the way. We drink salty milk tea while sitting in their white yurts and watch them make butter. Fortunately we have our own cook who prepares less adventurous food like spaghetti with vegetables and meat. We stay in a tent near the family in yak-furred sleeping bags because the wind gets very cold at night. Brushing your teeth amid a big flock of sheep and yaks is all part of the experience! EAGLE HUNTERS Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, the area where the eagle hunters live, is stunning. Blue mosques and burial sites lie scattered across the valleys. Shimmering saltwater lakes reflect the endless views of plains and mountains. Eagle hunters are Kazakh people, a Muslim tribe originally from nearby Kazakhstan. They form five per cent of the total Mongolian population. After a long bumpy drive we arrive at a lonely wooden hut with yurt and cattle in front. The eagle hunter gives us a warm welcome. He explains his daughter is getting married the next day. ‘I’d like to invite you as our guests of honour!’ The father of the bride shows us the eagle and takes us on a horse ride. The bird, a big female with a cap covering her eyes, is kept in a little shed behind the house. The eagle hunter shows us his hunting trophies; foxtails and wolf skins. The eagle hunting practice is

ADELAARJAGERS Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, het gebied waar de jagers leven, is adembenemend. Blauwe moskeeën en begraafplaatsen liggen verspreid over de valleien. Glinsterende zoutwatermeren weerspiegelen de eindeloze uitzichten op vlaktes en bergen. De jagers die wij zullen bezoeken, zijn Kazachse moslims. The animal makes a screeching sound when the eagle hunter mounts his horse in full traditional outfit with the bird on his arm. ‘The bird is like a family member,’ he says. ‘When it dies, we give it a proper funeral.’ THE WEDDING Visiting a Kazakh wedding is unique. This is probably a good thing, because when it comes to vodka, the Muslim Kazakhs have their own strict rules: once the bottle is open, you have
This trip is not for the faint-hearted to finish it! The living room floor is covered with big rugs and plates full of candy, cheese and bread for the event. Guests arrive from all over the plains in jeeps or by horse and take a seat on the floor. The bride and groom are shy, while the eldest relatives hold long, emotional speeches. Once in a while a sheep is brought in for a common prayer, before being slaughtered behind the house. We are offered sheep ears, to make sure ‘we would come and go as a pair’. ‘Just pretend you’re eating it,’ whispers Jagaa when he sees my face. The Kazakhs aren’t bothered and sing nomad songs accompanied by a two-snared instrument. We are also offered the floor. I sing a familiar Dutch song, which is highly appreciated by the locals. When the party moves on to the houses of relatives nearby I decide to call it a night. But not before we finish another bottle of vodka, of course. And one for the road the next morning to make sure we have genuinely sealed our friendship. Visiting west Mongolia and spending time with a Kazakh family is not for the fainthearted. Having said that, meeting up with the hospitable and friendly nomads is definitely worth the hardships. The Altai Mountains have a lot to offer, like hiking and riding horses in unrivalled landscapes. If you’re up for an offthe-beaten-track adventure, west Mongolia is the place for you. l 56

Na de lange hobbelige rit, komen we aan bij een verlaten houten hut met een yurt en vee ervoor. De heer des huizes heet ons een warm welkom en vertelt dat zijn dochter de volgende dag gaat trouwen. ‘Jullie zijn onze eregasten!’. Dan laat hij ons de adelaar zien. De vogel, een vrouwtje met een kap over haar ogen, verblijft in een kleine schuur achter het huis. De man laat ons ‘zijn’ jachttrofeeën zien: vossenstaarten en wolvenvellen. Het jagen met adelaars is een traditie die van vader op zoon wordt overgebracht. De vogels worden uit het nest gestolen als ze jong zijn en dan getraind om te jagen in de winter. Wanneer de jager in vol ornaat zijn paard bestijgt met de adelaar op zijn arm, maakt het beest een schreeuwend geluid. ‘Ze is als een familielid,’ zegt de man. ‘Als ze sterft, krijgt ze een echte begrafenis.’ HET HUWELIJK Een Kazackhse bruiloft bijwonen, is uniek. En dat is maar goed ook, want als het aankomt op wodka hebben deze Moslims hun eigen regels: als de fles eenmaal open is, moet je hem opmaken. In de woonkamer is de vloer bedekt met grote kleden en borden vol snoep, kaas en brood. Gasten uit alle uithoeken arriveren per jeep of te paard en nemen een plek in op de grond. De bruid en bruidegom zijn verlegen, terwijl de ouderen lange, emotionele speeches afsteken. Eens in de zoveel tijd wordt er een schaap binnengebracht voor een gezamenlijk gebed, waarna het beest achter het huis wordt geslacht. We krijgen de oren - ‘om er zeker van te zijn dat we komen en gaan als een paar’. ‘Doe gewoon alsof,’ fluistert Jagaa wanneer hij mijn gezicht ziet. Gelukkig hebben de overige Kazachs het niet door. Zij zingen hun nomadenliederen onder begeleiding van een twee-snarig instrument. Ten slotte mogen wij ook iets zeggen. Ik zing een Nederlands lied, tot waardering van de locals. Wanneer het feest uiteindelijk doorschuift naar de huizen van vrienden in de buurt, besluit ik te gaan slapen. Maar niet voordat we nog een fles wodka hebben leeggedronken natuurlijk. En er nog een meekrijgen voor onderweg, om er zeker van te zijn dat we onze vriendschap oprecht hebben bezegeld. GAAN OF NIET? Nee, een bezoek brengen aan west-Mongolië om daar wat tijd door te brengen met een Kazachse familie is niet voor iedereen weggelegd. Al is een ontmoeting met deze gastvrije en vriendelijke nomaden alle ontberingen wel meer dan waard. En het Altai gebergte heeft veel te bieden, zoals wandelen en paardrijden in de ongeëvenaarde natuur. Ben je niet zo van de gebaande paden? Dan is west-Mongolië het helemaal. l

A great benefit of visiting the area off-season, like in June, is that you have the vast plains all to yourself. WANNEER GAAN? When I’m in Europe I don’t need anything unusual or different, I’m not here for shopping. My favourite store in New York is Zara, so I think I’ll leave all my boyfriend’s Express clothes here and replace it with a new Zara wardrobe!
Have you ever had a luggage disaster, or lost a bag?

The luggage was delayed for some reason and we had to wait for over an hour, but other than that it was fine. I lost my luggage on another trip to Italy with my boyfriend, and we never got our luggage back. This time we’re taking a car there so there won’t be any problems!

The only bungee ramp in the world is located in Saint Jean de Sixt and it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Ski slopes such as La Clusaz, Manigod and Grand Bornand (Massif des Arravis) are all within a 20 minute drive of the ramp, so you can indulge two thrillseeking sports in one go. You can choose a regular bungee-jump, do a love jump (duo jump) or shoot down from the highest point of the ramp with the vehicle of your choice – such as skies, a snowboard, with a sleigh or via a trampoline: anything goes. As a snowboarder I had tried some jumps at snow parks before, so instead of using a board, this time I decided to use an alternative means: a bicycle. The Bun J Bike is slightly larger than a BMX, but you can’t ride it yourself so it’s basically a matter of sitting still and holding your handlebars while you travel at break-neck speed into the depths! The free fall is about 30 metres, depending on your weight. The heavier you are, the deeper your fall. So if one floor is about three metres high, I’m

BUNGEE PIONEER The big man behind the Bun J Ride concept is Jean-François Michelin. Jean-François, simply known as Jeff, has years of experience in the

He was born in Haute Savoie in the heart of the Alps in southeast France and has worked in the mountains as a rescue worker. His bungee-jumping career brought him to New Zealand and Indonesia as an instructor, but after seven years and more than 70,000 bungee jumps he felt it was time for something new. After two years of intensive testing the Bun J Ride was born in 2009: a perfect blend of bungee jumping and ski jumping. And the best part is, anyone who weighs over 40kg can do it. For the jump, two bungee cords are attached to your waist and then linked to steel cables. This allows you to do wonderful tricks after the free fall, something that’s not possible with a normal bungee jump.

BUNGEE PIONIER De grote man achter het Bun J Ride concept is Jean-François Michelin. Jean- François, kortweg Jeff genoemd heeft jarenlange ervaring in het bungeejump vak, zowel op professioneel als op persoonlijk vlak. Hij is geboren in de Haute Savoie, midden in de Alpen in het Zuidoosten van Frankrijk en heeft als reddingswerker in de bergen gewerkt, onder andere als lid van een skipatrouille. Zijn bungeejump carrière bracht hem als instructeur tot in Nieuw-Zeeland en Indonesië, maar na zeven jaar en meer dan 70.000 bungeejumps was het tijd voor wat nieuws. En wat doet een pionier? Die verkent grenzen, gaat óver grezen, en komt ten slotte tot nieuwe ontdekkingen. Zo werd na twee jaar testen in 2009 Bun J Ride geboren: een perfecte mix van bungeejumpen en schansspringen. En het mooie is dat iedereen die meer dan 40 kilo weegt het kan doen. Er worden twee bungeekoorden rond je middel bevestigd die gekoppeld zijn aan stalen kabels. Hierdoor kun je na de vrije val prachtige capriolen uithalen, wat bij een normale bungeejump niet kan. Deze verschillende facetten geeft de Bun J Ride een extra dimensie. In plaats van staan en dan springen, heb je nu eerst een 40 meter hoge en 28 meter lange schans waar je vanaf moet, vervolgens komt er een vrije val van 30 meter en als klap op de vuurpijl kan je nog een paar geweldige trucs doen. ADEMBENEMENDE VAL Daar sta ik dan, bovenop de 28 meter lange schans. De koele wind laat me rillen en ik krijg mijn helmriempje niet dicht. Jeff praat op me in met zo’n typisch Frans-Engels accent en klikt zonder moeite de helmriem dicht. Ik krijg alle veiligheidsinstructies te horen en wanneer ik in de riemgordel stap waar de kabels aan bevestigd zullen worden heb ik mijn eerste pijnpuntje te pakken. Met dank aan Jeff die de gordel net te strak optrekt. Ik stap op de kleine fiets en kijk nog eens naar beneden. De rotsachtige diepte in de verte en het uiteinde van de schans doen

BREATH-TAKING FALL There I am, on top of the 28-metre-long ramp. The cool wind makes me shiver and I can’t close my helmet strap. Jeff talks to me with that typical French-English accent and then deftly closes the strap. I hear all the safety instructions and step into the harness attached to the cables – this is when I feel my first bout of pain - Jeff has tightened my belt too much. I step onto the small bike and look down again. The rocky depths in the distance and the end of the ramp make me shiver, but I feel fantastic butterflies in my stomach. The adrenaline is howling through my body and then there’s the moment I stand with my little bike at the upper edge of the ramp. From a stable 180 degrees I’m now suddenly facing the abyss. And then they let me go... Bang! I go with a nice speed off the ramp, the abyss is getting closer and then I’m loose... what a wonderful feeling. I can’t suppress a loud scream. WHOA! I go head-first because I had planned to do a somersault during the free fall. This fails miserably, but what a sublime kick to fall staring right into the rocks! My breathing stops and in my mind I grin from ear to ear. After being bounced a few times I glide smoothly toward the landing spot where an instructor disconnects the bike and belt. Then the climbing begins: 100 metres in altitude through the forest. Within five minutes I’m up again. The adrenaline is still howling through my body and thanks to the free fall I have more energy than any drink could ever give me. Is it safe? Yes it is. In fact, the chance that you’ll fall from your sofa is bigger than the chance that you’ll hurt yourself during Bun J Ride. It meets all European legislation relating to bungee activity (AFNOR standards NF52S 501 & 502) and an accident has never occurred. In addition, all materials are precisely checked for security issues and the Bun J Ride organisation is certified by STEBAT. If you do manage to crash, the cracks in your pants are fully reimbursed by Axa Insurance. Anyone can do it. You don’t need special training, just some courage and guts! Surely there’s no flashier start to your holiday. l

I CAN’T SUPPRESS A LOUD SCREAM Boem! Met een mooie vaart ga ik de schans af, de afgrond komt dichterbij en dan opeens ben ik los. Wat een heerlijk gevoel. Ik kan een harde schreeuw niet onderdrukken. WHOEHOE! Ik ga ‘head first’ want ik had me voorgenomen om tijdens de vrije val een salto te maken. Die mislukt jammerlijk. Maar om met je gezicht recht op de rotsen af te gaan, geeft een sublieme kick! Mijn adem stokt en voor mijn gevoel grijns ik van oor tot oor. Na enkele malen terugveren, glij ik soepel richting de landingsplek en wordt ik opgevangen door een instructeur die me weer loskoppelt. En dan begint de klim terug. De kleine 100 meter in hoogteverschil loop ik terug door het bos. Binnen 5 minuten ben ik weer boven. De adrenaline giert nog door mijn lichaam en door het samentrekken van mijn spieren tijdens de vrije val heb ik meer energie dan een powerdrink me ooit kan geven. Is het veilig? Jazeker. Je loopt meer gevaar om thuis van de bank te vallen dan dat er tijdens de Bun J Ride iets met je gebeurt. Feit is dat de Bun J Ride voldoet aan alle Europese wetgeving met betrekking tot bungeejump activiteiten (AFNOR normen NF52S 501 & 502) en dat er nog nooit een ongeluk is gebeurd. Daarnaast wordt elk onderdeel en al het materiaal uiterst zorgvuldig gecontroleerd op beveiligingsproblemen en is de Bun J Ride-organisatie gecertificeerd door onder andere STEBAT. arry en Paula zijn zojuist met vlucht KL 6014 uit New York geland op Schiphol. Na 5 jaar samen hebben ze zichzelf getrakteerd op een midweek shoppen in ‘the city that never sleeps’. Dan zien ze in de aankomsthal ineens informatie van de Douane. “Hebben wij iets aan te geven?”

SHOP ‘TILL YOU DROP!
Hun shoppingtour door de metropool startte in de megawarenhuizen Bloomingdales en Macy’s. “Ik ben normaal niet zo dol op winkelen, maar dit was echt een bijzondere ervaring”, bekent Harry. Bij hem sloeg de kooplust zelfs als eerste toe. Hij scoorde een paar spijkerbroeken, enkele merkpolo’s en een stel trendy sneakers. Paula kwam op haar beurt met een roze draagtasje en een brede glimlach uit een luxe lingeriewinkel. “In de ‘flagship store’ van een Australische ‘schoenenreus’ kon ik moeilijk kiezen”, legt Paula uit. Dus ging ze daar uiteindelijk met twee paar ‘boots’ langs de kassa. Bij de wereldberoemde modehuizen en chique juweliers op de prestigieuze 5th Avenue bleef het bij kijken. Op 57th en 34th Street was het wel weer raak; daar vulde Paula haar garderobe flink aan. Vlak voor vertrek uit ‘The Big Apple’ zag Harry nog een voordeeltje dat hij niet kon laten lopen. “Zo’n tablet-pc is daar echt veel goedkoper.” TO DECLARE OR NOT TO DECLARE Terug op Schiphol staan ze in de aankomsthal op hun koffers te wachten. Boven de bagageband hangt een informatieposter van de Douane. Paula kijkt ernaar en vraagt Harry: “Wist jij dat je vanuit Amerika voor maar € 430 belastingvrij mag meenemen? Volgens mij zitten we daar allebei ruim boven. Dat moeten we bij de Douane aangeven.” Harry vindt dat onzin, maar Paula brengt hem aan het twijfelen. “Als de Douane onze bagage controleert, moeten we alsnog betalen én dan krijgen we ook nog eens een boete.” Dus gaan ze door het rode poortje; goods to declare. De douanemedewerker berekent de verschuldigde belasting en dat pinnen ze ter plekke. Uiteindelijk valt het ze wel mee. Paula vindt dat ze nog wel een keer in New York kunnen gaan winkelen. “Da’s goed”, zegt Harry, “over 5 jaar hebben we weer wat te vieren.” WAT ZIJN DE REGELS? HOLLAND?
The name Holland, although generally accepted, is not actually the name of the country. Holland makes up two of the 12 provinces in the Netherlands. The nation hasn’t been called Holland since the 17th century, when the provinces Brabant, Overijsel, Utrecht and Gelderland were added to the official territory. During the 17th century, when it was still called Holland, The Dutch East India Company enjoyed a monopoly on business in the orient, which is why many countries called the country Holland and the name stuck.

BICYCLE COUNTRY Amsterdam is built on poles because the ground is so soft. The poles ensure they can reach more solid ground, but in the past the buildings have often shifted, sunk and moved which is why almost all houses in Amsterdam are crooked.

The narrators are Madeline Hannah, a Wasp English major who has a deep love for 19th century novels in spite of the prevailing Derridacraze, her friend/admirer Mitchell Grammaticus, and Leonard Bankhead, the academic golden boy she marries shortly after graduation. But marriage, like finding your place in the adult world, turns out to be a complicated affair. While Mitchell goes backpacking to ‘find himself’ (and work as a volunteer with Mother Teresa), Maddy has to deal with the rollercoaster personality of her bipolar husband. But don’t expect the supernatural mumbo jumbo, murderous clowns and bloody antics the king of fright usually delivers. 11/22/63 is a masterful historical novel, in which King lovingly evokes the late fifties and early sixties. It’s a surprisingly romantic love story (Jake meets the love of his life, librarian Sadie Dunhill, in the idyllic town of Jodie, Texas). An homage to the impact an inspiring teacher can have on his pupils. And when Jake finally starts pursuing a perfectly portrait Lee Harvey Oswald, about halfway through the book, King rivals the very best in literary Kennedy fiction. Convincing, tender and thought-provoking, this may well be the magnum opus of a master storyteller. Published by: Scribner

Even alligators take showers sometimes. This becomes a problem when the sewers they inhabit are polluted with acid. When playing Where’s My Water? you have to trace a route to get clean water to an alligator’s shower. Developed by Disney, the art is well thought-out and the main character Alligator Swampy is as charming as the rubber duck he’s holding while he takes his bath.
Tom & Jerry flashbacks are guaranteed when playing Spy Mouse. Collecting cheese is your main goal, but it’s also fun to let chasing cats bump into walls. Don’t expect many unique gameplay elements, though. Development studio Firemint has designed a simple, yet addictive game, where drawing lines with your fingertip is the core activity - just like in Firemint’s previous hit game Flight Control.
Jump Out! looks eerily similar to ZeptoLab’s popular Cut the Rope. From the art style, down to the option of collecting three floating stars in each level. Luckily, the main goal of guiding insects to a black hole by letting them jump is pretty fresh. However, in the end, Avallon Alliance’s Jump Out! isn’t challenging enough to warrant a spot on your mobile device’s home screen.
This portable version of PlayStation 2 roleplaying game Persona 2 - Innocent Sin is out now in Japan and the United States, and a European release is on the cards. Persona 2 was praised in 1999 for its appealing cast of characters and deep combat system. Nowadays, the game feels a bit outdated, thanks to a somewhat slow game flow. Fans of the genre will definitely enjoy this fascinating Atlus game, though.

EVERY YEAR, around 15 million people visit the Netherlands, so it must be doing something right. Holland Boulevard, located in the departure lounge between piers E and F, is designed to satisfy travellers’ appetites for all things Dutch. Whether you’re making your way home after an Amsterdam adventure and already experiencing withdrawal symptoms or are in transit with a connecting flight, a stroll through this diverse zone dedicated to Dutch culture will give you a crash course in all the country has to offer. It’s not all windmills, wooden shoes and weed, you know.
Strong stuff Travellers in search of a tipple can mix things up at the Bols Genever Experience from famous Dutch spirits brand Lucas Bols, which has been in business since 1575. Visitors can learn about the history of one of the Netherlands’ more potent exports and then sample their own cocktail creation at the bar. It’s worth a visit for the design alone, with its sleek glass and steel interior… but the cocktails are rather nice, too. If you need to line your stomach before or after, a visit to the Dutch Kitchen should do the trick. Here you can tuck into some popular treats from – yes, you guessed it – the Netherlands, such as poffertjes (mini pancakes) and kibbeling (chunks of fried, battered cod), and wash them down with a Dutch beer… or coffee, of course.
Culture vulture If you’re looking for something a little less intoxicating, take a free peek at original paintings by Dutch masters at the boulevard’s very own branch of the Rijksmuseum. Its somewhat larger sister is one of the most popular museums in Amsterdam, and this bite-sized version houses a permanent collection of ten Golden Age works, as well as playing host to regular exhibitions. Bookworms can devour Dutch literature – available in a whopping 29 languages – at Airport Library (the first of its kind in the world, apparently), which is also equipped with iPads on which guests can download music and films (unfortunately, you can’t take them away with you).
Keep your clothes on If relaxation is more your thing, the Back to Life massage zone provides a variety of rejuvenating services, including chair massages and a full-body aqua massage. Anyone not too keen on the idea of getting semi-naked in the departure lounge will be pleased to hear that none of these require the removal of clothing. They even have an oxygen bar for those in need of a top up… and if all the pampering proves exhausting, weary guests can lounge around in one of the ‘living room’ areas, complete with sofas and TVs. They are surprisingly cosy or, as the Dutch would say, gezellig.

The ‘living room’ areas are surprisingly gezellig. Tree huts Passengers travelling with children can ensure that their little ones are suitably exhausted before boarding by taking them for a spin at Kids Forest, where they can go wild in the tree huts and silly on the slides. For tiny tots there’s the Babycare Lounge, with changing facilities and cots. And if all this isn’t enough, Holland Boulevard also boasts a casino, a Dutch design store and a chocolatier, too. Ok, so you can’t take a tour of Amsterdam’s world-famous canals, nor can you hop on a bike and go exploring; and other, less wholesome, offerings are notably absent, but Holland Boulevard certainly succeeds in its aim of offering travellers an authentic snapshot of the Netherlands.
