Schilt Publishing Gallery will be opening its doors, both physically (in our offices and home in Amsterdam) and online. We are currently working like crazy to totally update our website so that it will do justice to the publishing house and the gallery.

We will continue to keep you informed about all the latest developments, especially via our recently launched Newsletter. If you haven’t received your copy yet, please register for it via our website.

As soon as the new website is online, you will have the opportunity to join our new members club and be able to benefit from all kinds of discounts and exclusive special offers! You will then become a real-live Rhubarbino, named after our magnificent and proud logo cat Rhubarb.

Schilt Publishing Gallery is a commercial gallery and will operate globally, as is Schilt Publishing.

Additionally, we intend to organise a major survey exhibition at least a couple of times a year, showcasing one of our photographers. At the end of January, the first exhibition will feature the breathtaking work of the famous Italian photographer Mario Giacomelli. And it will be opened by no-one less than Katiuscia Biondi, the granddaughter of Giacomelli (who died in 2000, at the age of 75).

The opening of the gallery does not at all mean that we will be reducing the number of activities in the publishing company, quite the contrary in fact.

And 2014 will once again be a special year in terms of our book offerings. In the spring we will be publishing no less than nine new titles, as well as three new titles that were already announced earlier.

View From Inside is an expansive presentation of contemporary Arab video, photography, and mixed media from the Middle East and North Africa. The book shows the works of fifty leading Arab artists from fourteen countries. The works reflect the emergence of photographic, video and digital art as important forms of creative visual expression in the Arab world over the past twenty years. The artworks address a broad range of issues that the artists themselves have defined as important to the modern Arab experience. Four texts cover the early appearance of photography in the Middle East and North Africa in the mid-nineteenth century through photography’s evolution as an integral part of the contemporary Arab art world.

The author of the lead essay on contemporary photographic art is the pioneering curator and expert on classical Islamic art and contemporary Arab art, Karin Adrian von Roques. Ms. Von Roques has worked in the Middle East and North Africa for more than twenty years, bringing important contemporary Arab art to museum audiences in Europe, Asia and the United States. Essays on the history of Arab photographic expression are being written by Samer Mohdad, a well-known Lebanese photographer, writer and co-founder of the Fondation de l’Image Arabe in Beirut; Dr. Claude W. Sui, chief curator of the International Forum of Photography at the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum in Mannheim, Germany and curator of exhibitions on nineteenth century photography in Arabia and To the Holy Lands: Mecca and Medina to Jerusalem.

Mona Khazindar, Director General of the Institute du Monde Arabe in Paris will write an essay on the history of modern Arab photography and its relationship to contemporary art. Wendy Watriss, Senior Curator and Artistic Director for FotoFest International will write the introductory essay for the book.

View From Inside will have over 200 reproductions of artworks by Arab artists.

It will also contain a DVD with video material. The book is a collaboration between Schilt Publishing and FotoFest International.

Democratic Desert The War in Syria Since February of 2012 Robert King has documented an unprecedented tragedy of the blatant targeting of civilians and hospitals by the al-Assad regime as well as a number of other serious human rights violations and war crimes. As the conflict is entering its third year there has been little if any international support from democratic leaders to end the killing despite the fact that over 100,000 Syrians have been killed, and over 28,000 that have gone missing. 4.5 million Syrians are displaced within their country and over 1.5 million Syrians are now refugees in neighbouring countries.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has declared Nigeria among the top eight countries with the highest human trafficking rates in the world. Photographer Elena Perlino has been working on this extremely important topic for many years, focusing mainly on the Italian connection since Italy has an extensive sex industry based on trafficking from Africa. Perlino’s work attempts to show the complexities and contradictions of women’s experiences, documenting their daily life in Turin, Genoa, Rome, Naples and Palermo. By collecting stories of women from Benin City (Edo State) – where around 80% of trafficked women come from – this reportage bears witness to the multiple reasons behind women’s forced or voluntary migration. Elena Perlino has succeeded in telling a breathtaking story with elegance; this book became thus a harsh yet touching portrait of one of Europe’s most horrific daily scenes.

Cristiana Giordano is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Davis, USA. She earned her degree at UC Berkeley, and has done extensive research on human trafficking, mental health and foreign migration in Italy.

Isoke Aikpitanyi is a former victim of trafficking and now the main reference point for Nigerian women in Italy. She has published two books on the subject: I. Aikpitanyi, Le ragazze di Benin City (together with L. Maragnani; 2007); and 500 storie vere (2011).

Basement Sanctuaries explores the ways in which superintendents decorate basements of apartment buildings in Northern Manhattan, New York City by illuminating the process of migrant adaptation to the metropolis from an intimate perspective. Superintendents are caretakers that usually live in the basements of apartment buildings with ten or more units. They are in charge of the building on behalf of the owner, maintain its public areas and the building’s mechanical and technical systems, do repairs in the apartments and deal with the tenants’ concerns. Most of the supers in Northern Manhattan are migrants from Latin America or the Caribbean. During the process of apartment hunting in Northern Manhattan, Würfel discovered these unexpected and innovatively decorated areas. The repeated themes of cultural, national, and religious origins suggest that similar impulses drive the decoration process for different supers. However the photographs also show the diverse ways in which supers have personalised their multifunctional living/work spaces and have created a uniquely intimate space in the basement of New York City.

Gesche W端rfel, born in Bremerhaven, Germany, has lived in the United States since 2009. She gained a degree in Urban Planning from the University of Dortmund, Germany in 2003 and an MA in Photography and Urban Cultures with Distinction from Goldsmiths, University of London, UK in 2006. She was selected as one of the Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2007 and has been exhibited internationally. The Basement Sanctuaries series has been awarded three grants by the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and has been exhibited at Field Projects NYC and the New York Public Library.

The “Arab Spring” is among the most thoroughly photographed events in recent history. People in the streets using their mobile phones to register incidents they were eyewitness to, local journalists as well as camera crews and freelance photographers dispatched by international media recording the developments from day to day. Our perception of the “Arab Spring” is marked by dramatic images of key moments during the uprisings. Demonstrators taking over Tahrir Square in Cairo and engaging in violent clashes with the security forces and supporters of President Mubarak; the storming of Colonel Gaddafi’s compound in Tripoli, Libya, by rebels and the capture of the leader himself weeks later. After living in a motorhome in the Salton Sea, Nicholas Albrecht questions the notion of being an insider through this intimate journey of discovery.
