Letter from the Executive Director

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about reading itself, about the simple yet sometimes challenging act of making time to read in our lives, which are often full and distracted. Reading asks us to set aside the noise for a while and give our attention to one thing. I’m trying to be more intentional about that time myself, treating reading as something worth protecting rather than something I fit in only after everything else is done. This way of thinking is closely tied to how I see the library: a place that helps create space for focus, curiosity, and attention in a busy world.

With that same care in mind, this spring you will see a light refresh taking place in our vestibule at our Central location. This update is meant to gently create a more welcoming experience as you enter the building and to match the work done when the automated materials handler was added last year. We are being thoughtful about minimizing disruption, and I appreciate everyone’s patience as this work moves forward.

I also want to remind you about the Reflection Room at our Central location. This room is available for quiet meditation, reflection, or simply taking a pause. Libraries are active, communal places, and that energy matters. At the same time, offering a room for calm is part of how we support reading, learning, and overall well-being.

As we look ahead, I am pleased to share that we have recently established a new Library Foundation with 501(c)(3) status. This gives us a way to plan beyond today and ensure that future readers and learners continue to find opportunity here. It reflects a long-term commitment to the Library as a place that grows alongside its community.

I hope you find time this spring to read, reflect, and spend some time in your Library.

How to participate:

A small group of dedicated library advocates has formed this brand-new 501(c)(3) organization to support Schaumburg Library. Through strategic fundraising and advocacy, the Foundation aims to fund exciting programs, increase resources, and inspire a love of reading and learning for all ages.

The Foundation is excited to partner with local restaurants this year to provide a simple way for you to donate while enjoying some tasty food.

In honor of National Library Week (April 19-25), we’ve partnered with Portillo’s for this food fundraiser.

Eat at Portillo’s, and 20% of the proceeds will be donated to Schaumburg Library Township Foundation.

Monday, April 13 • 5-8 p.m.

• Come to the Library and pick up a flyer to use in-restaurant

Use the online and app code: PORTILLOS14

Only good at Portillo’s at 611 E. Golf Road, Schaumburg on this date.

Most programs require registration. Please check events at schaumburglibrary.org or call (847) 923-3347.

STORIES THAT REFLECT OUR COMMUNITY

Storytimes are a fundamental part of library service, supporting early literacy, building cognitive skills, and creating joyful connections for children and families. At Schaumburg Library, our diverse community makes sharing storytimes in other languages a natural extension of that work.

For several years, our Youth Department staff have offered bilingual programs in seven languages, including Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, Ukrainian, Mongolian, Polish, and Korean. These programs invite families to experience stories, songs, and rhymes from across cultures in a welcoming, fun setting. Programs are led by library staff and community members who are native speakers and passionate about sharing diverse traditions and stories with everyone.

Research shows that early exposure to multiple languages can support cognitive development and focus. Just

as important, we’ve heard from many families who tell us how powerful it is to see their language and culture reflected at the Library.

In addition, staff created a YouTube series featuring videos from our Songs and Rhymes from our Community book as another way to celebrate the diversity of our community while developing valuable early literacy skills. Visit our YouTube Playlist to find out more.

Bilingual Storytimes are for preschoolers and their caregivers. Our Story Explorer programs are for elementary-age children. Visit our website for dates, times, and registration details.
