Missoula Children’s Theater workshop at Plat Elementary on April 12, 2011
Dear Arts Advocates,
Thanks to you, we celebrated our 10th anniversary season in grand style. We started the festivities early with our Community Clay Stomp in June 2010. Suffice it to say that this multi-generational community wide activity resulted in a monumental permanent sculpture which now adorns our doorstep. It was dedicated in June 2011. The creation and dedication of this mural formed the literal “bookends” of our anniversary year. Please see more on the Clay Stomp® dedication on page 9 of the annual report. Red carpet entrance at Vicki Lawrence on September 11, 2010 We savored the special moments of a red-carpet opening to our 10th anniversary Performing Arts Series as we hosted celebrity actress and comedienne Vicki Lawrence. Patrons enjoyed VIP treatment, a glass of bubbly as they entered the facilities, and a special anniversary designer cookie upon departure. It was truly an event to remember.
Next, the Schauer Center joined with the Hartford Community Chorus to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Founding Director Ruth A. Knoll and the Chorus were featured and honored as part of our Performing Arts Series. The concert, Christmas Past, Present, and Future, featured special guests, the Kettle Moraine Symphony, in a performance of the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah and a reprise of part of the Schauer Center’s 2000 inaugural concert. A special reception followed the concert. Then in April 2011, a special Community Arts Showcase concert and gallery exhibit was held. It was a historical undertaking as all of the Schauer Center’s resident groups and Community School of the Arts programs were showcased simultaneously. The grand finale featured local talent numbering over 150 participants on stage, young and old, performing the patriotic From Sea to Shining Sea – truly a sight (and sound) to behold. That sums up the special anniversary year activities, but does not begin to explain how extraordinary the year really was. Every Schauer Center program broke records….the Performing Arts Series, the Schooltime Matinee Series, the Community School of the Arts, and outreach. If you factor in the impact of Suckow Family Art Gallery exhibits, we served over 50,000 area residents during our 10th anniversary year with programming administered SOLELY by the Schauer Arts & Activities Center. That does not include rental facility use which is detailed on page 9. Other notable achievements during the 10th anniversary year included assuming control of bar/concessions operations (a contracted service prior to January 2011), entering into a new educational partnership with Waukesha Civic Theatre’s drama academy, completing our two-year cycle of World Fest, and pursuing a new Task Force agenda to develop a smart facility growth plan to accommodate future community cultural needs. None of this is possible without you. Whether you are a volunteer, a donor, a patron, a student, a board member, or a staff member, you are a critical part of our ability to succeed as a cultural and economic asset to the region. We can never thank you enough. We look forward to the next decade of pursuing our mission of “developing, supporting, and promoting the arts by providing experiences that inspire creativity and connect people.” With much gratitude,
Thomas J. Robbins Executive Director

Wisconsin Pastel Artists gallery reception on April 29, 2011
Arts Midwest World Fest The Schauer Center was the only Wisconsin venue chosen to participate in the 2009-11 cycle of Arts Midwest’s World Fest. Arts Midwest is a regional arts service organization based in Minneapolis, MN, serving nine midwestern states through a variety of programs. Over a two-year period, four international musical ensembles were presented in intensive week-long residencies with the purpose of fostering global understanding and appreciation. The residencies consisted of school concerts, workshops, and outreach activities, culminating in a public performance. To extend the experience to the classroom, Arts Midwest provides participating communities with a curriculum that helps students and teachers better understand and appreciate the customs of the visiting ensembles. Studying other cultures hopefully will lead to a lasting curiosity that results in further exploration of the world.
Welcoming reception for Mauvais Sort
All told, 22 K-12 schools from 10 communities benefitted, including Mayville, Hartford, West Bend, Erin, Neosho, Lannon, Watertown, Jackson, Port Washington, and Cedarburg. World Fest was supported locally by the Hartford Rotary Club and The Prairie House. Members of 11 area Rotary Clubs attended mini-performances at the Schauer Center. Clubs in attendence were Hartford, Waukesha Sunrise, Slinger-Allenton, Mayville, West Bend Sunrise, Elmbrook, Mequon-Thiensville, Waukesha Noon, West Bend Noon, Rotary Amigos del Milwaukee, and Hartland-Lake Country. The Schauer Center was also proud to host 38 Rotary Youth Exchange Students who represented 29 different countries at the World Fest mainstage performances. Funding for World Fest was provided in part by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, 3M Foundation, The Hearst Foundations, MetLife Foundation, The Japan Foundation, Délégation du Québec Chicago, the Consulate General of Israel to the Midwest, the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, and many others.
Rep. Don Pridemore with The Israeli Enthnic Ensemble
The ensembles who visited the Schauer Center were Beauty & Melody from China (Fall 2009), Agatsuma & the Japanese Music Trio (Spring 2010), The Israeli Ethnic Ensemble (Fall 2010), and Mauvais Sort from Quebec, Canada (Spring 2011). These groups reached 8,390 students in grades K-12 and 2,596 adults, for a total of 10,986 patrons, during their residencies. World Fest ensembles participated in 55 different activities, including four mainstage concerts, four pre-show SoundBites, four public Welcoming Receptions, four miniperformances for Rotarians and guests, three Schooltime Matinees, 34 in-school workshops, one outreach workshop at the Schauer Center, and one pre-show reception hosted by the Quebec Government.

Community Arts Showcase
Clay Stomp® Dedication
The Schauer Center presented a 10th anniversary community arts extravaganza featuring a host of local talent. The show included performance by resident groups Hartford City Band, Hartford Community Chorus, and the Hartford Players, Ltd., as well as, the Schauer Community School of the Arts’ Kettle Moraine Children’s Choir, Kettle Moraine Youth String Orchestra, and Schauer School of Dance. Following the performance a public reception was held in the Gallery on the upper level.
In celebration of our 10th Anniversary, a clay mural entitled Dream, Create, Inspire was dedicated in a brief ceremony on Saturday, June 25 at 11:00 am. After the Clay Stomp® on June 12, 2010 the decorated clay slabs were taken to artist Joel Pfeiffer’s studio in Hartland. Pfeiffer cut each slab into tiles to be fired and glazed. The tiles are then assembled into three, metal frames that have been manufactured through the assistance of Steel Craft Corp., Sno-Way International, and Hartford Finishing. The final piece was installed to the west of our main entrance, as a gift to the community.
Accompanying the showcase was an exhibit that featured original artwork by Kettle Moraine Fine Arts Guild members and CSA students. Each resident group also displayed a short narrative and a few pictures that detailed their group’s history.

Speakers included Hartford Mayor Joe Dautermann, artist Joel Pfeiffer, and Board Treasurer Tim Miller. We appreciate all the businesses and individuals who were involved in making this cultural project possible, including the Hartford Area Foundation, First National Bank of Hartford, Hartford Savings Bank, the Frederick W. & Beatrice K. Schauer Foundation, and West Bend - The Silver Lining, among others.
