A Time for New Beginnings The 2012-13 season was a year of irsts and new beginnings for the Schauer Center. In addition to myself, we welcomed new staf members Tianna Conway, Director of Education , and Derek Kozlowski, Director of Event Services. We introduced our Season Sneak Peak, which gave you the opportunity to vote on shows for the upcoming season. While I had been aware of the Schauer Center for several years and had atended some events here, I was very excited and impressed the more I learned about the organization during my hiring process and irst year here. I was especially impressed by the Community School of the Arts (CSA) and the consistently high quality of classes and opportunities ofered to students of all ages. Our Arts Immersions are unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere, and are a great way for us to connect with members of the community. We are very fortunate to have such a facility and organization in a community the size of Hartford. We’re truly a regional organization and I am pleased to see how many people we reach throughout the region and beyond. I’m very passionate about ensuring the voices of our patrons, donors, partners and advocates are heard and incorporated into the work we do here. This is YOUR organization and I will strive to ensure we never stop working and improving for you. It’s wonderful to see so many community organizations utilize our space. We’re certainly a gathering place for many and are pleased to welcome return renters from Hartford Union High School to Maggie Mae and many more. During April 2013, we were proud to host the American Association of Community Theatre’s Region III Theatre Festival thanks to the Wisconsin Association of Community Theatre. The event rotates between ive states and happens every other year so it won’t return to Wisconsin for another 10 years! In working to provide you with the best experiences possible, we installed a sound system in Pikes Peak for our Cabaret Series. No longer do we need to rely on artists to provide their own systems. Now we have consistent, high quality sound that is evenly distributed throughout the room. Thank you to the Hartford Area Foundation for their kind support which enabled us to purchase and install this system. Thanks to the Schauer Foundation, we were able to upgrade various aspects of the Schauer Center from our HVAC system to our computer server so that we can serve you beter and provide you with a comfortable experience throughout the year. Thank you to all our wonderful donors, volunteers, partners, and advocates for supporting us throughout the years. We could not accomplish all we do without you. I look forward to working with you and for you, as we work to continue developing, supporting and promoting the arts for everyone and building an even stronger Schauer Center. With thanks,

Brenda Lee Johnston Executive Director

During the 2012-13 season, the Schauer Center provided several outreach opportunities both on-site and of for all ages. Ten pre-show Sound Bites events were ofered during which artists share background information about themselves and their performance or local school music groups perform. Pre-show art workshops were ofered for children and families prior to the West Bend The Silver Lining Family Series. Activities were ofered for The Velveteen Rabbit, The Berenstain Bears: Family Maters; and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. A family puppetry workshop was ofered prior to the season opener of River Criters, which was part of the Allstate Zagel Insurance Services’ Tikes in Pikes series. In October 2012, we were fortunate to welcome Colleen Kelly, niece of Gene Kelly, for a Cha-Cha class. December saw the return of The Nutcracker, this time from Dance Alive National Ballet. Not only did the show feature students from our School of Dance, but the company ofered a ballet masterclass for our students during their time here. In February 2013, The Mealies (Willy Porter and Carpe Diem String Quartet) provided a string instrument workshop and demonstration for local orchestra students including those in our very own Schauer Youth Orchestra. Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) returned for a week-long residency in March. Over 130 students auditioned for the 60 roles in The Secret Garden. In addition to the rehearsals and performances, MCT’s tour/directors ofered 4 workshops for cast and crew members. April was of to a busy start with a tap dance workshop ofered by cast members of TAP: The Musical. Then Moscow Nights joined us for a week-long residency during which they provided performances and workshop demonstrations at West Bend Mutual Insurance, Emerald Ridge Assisted Living, Wellington Place Assisted Living, and the Hartford, Jackson and Kewaskum Boys and Girls Clubs. They also performed for area Rotary Clubs during a lunchtime gathering at the Schauer Center. We ended the season with a workshop and performance at Emerald Ridge Assisted Living with Switchback. Additionally Tianna Conway, our Director of Education, and Cammie Walters, one of our visual arts instructors, provided visual arts workshops for the Kewaskum Boys and Girls Club and Girl Scout Troops at Addison Elementary School. We’re honored and proud to be able to ofer such diverse opportunities to people of ages throughout the region, which helps us fulill our mission to provide experiences that inspire creativity and connect people.

Schauer Community School of the Arts Irish Dance

Leaps & Bounds Dance Recital, May 19, 2013

A new Irish Dance program started with a free workshop in April 2012. Initial interest, sparked by the workshop, was very high, and soon the workshop was illed to capacity. To gauge potential interest, a follow up survey was done among participants and it was determined that an Irish Dance program could begin. In the Fall, the Schauer Center ofered its irst Irish Dance classes. Instead of the traditional one session per semester; two sessions were ofered to raise interest and awareness of the program. The two Beginner 1 classes illed and, by the second session, were close to capacity and eventually illed to capacity in January. In the Beginning 1 class, dancers learn the basics, names of dances, simple routines and basic form. After the Leaps & Bounds Dance Recital in May, many dancers advanced to either Beginner 2 or Novice 1 level. In Beginning 2 dancers continue their progress as they reine their steps and begin to apply more diicult techniques. Novice 1 classes are more advanced classes that are held twice a week, with one day focusing on soft shoe, the other day on hard shoe dancing. Perfecting the more diicult steps, practicing new tricks, and learning the basic form and rhythm with hard shoes is the class focus for Novice 1 students. Given the level of success implementing this new class, we are looking to continue and possibly expand the program as we move forward.

Arts Immersion

Girl Scouts Arts Immersion March 16, 2013

Arts Immersion Days began in May 2012 and continued into the summer with the irst Arts Immersion Camp with the Hartford Recreational Center in July. We received a great response from educators, and many schools requested extra dates. Arts Immersion Days feature dance, music, theater, visual arts, or backstage theater experiences, and is a great way for schools to step out of the classroom for an interactive day of multidisciplinary arts education workshops at the Schauer Center. The ability for the Schauer Center to tailor the workshop activities towards the school’s curriculum has been particularly useful to ensure the success of these Arts Immersion Days. Given the high level of success working with local schools, the Schauer Center decided to take arts immersions to other organizations in the community, which lead to the current relationship we share with Girl Scout troops in Washington, Dodge, Waukesha, and Dane county.
