La Dolce Vita It is with great joy that we present this exhibition of recent creations by the Maestro. This collection truly reflects his pleasure at making the work, with vibrant colors and beautiful patterns singing with heartfelt pleasure. The Dinosaurs (pages 14-15 and 26-27) twist and bow gracefully, their bodies a symphony of blue and green, red and blue. Forms like Cayuga (pages 36-37), perform a mystical shape-shifting dance. The Endeavor works (pages 46-47 and 4849) are elegant, exotic fronds that seem to drift lightly through the air. Waka Waka (pages 56-57) recalls the tribal baskets of Africa, Alabama (pages 58-59) is a patchwork quilt of intricate patterns and myriad colors, and Nassau (pages 54-55) flaunts its dramatic tropical flora. Each work by Lino is filled with gratitude for La Dolce Vita—the sweet life—which, through his creations, he reminds us to see in the world.

Lina and Lino celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September, 2019. 4


Lino finds inspiration everywhere — in a sunset, a quilt, in his travels all around the world; through the people he meets, landscapes, history, large cities and small towns, books and museums — as well as in the grapes growing in his own yard or the colors of nearby Burano. In the summer of 2019, along with his family and friends, Lino celebrated the 40th Anniversary of that important visit with a day of festivities at the at Pilchuck’s picturesque campus in Stanwood. That day, Lino created two glass vessels, including the Pilchuck 40, which he is working on above, and shown finished on pages 10 and 11.

LINO 2O2O On June 16th, 2019, Maestro Lino Tagliapietra’s travels to Pilchuck Glass School had him reminiscing about the very first time he made that trip. It was in 1979, on the invitation of Dale Chihuly and Benjamin Moore. Lino came to the United States to teach artists at Pilchuck how to manipulate the molten glass with finesse. It was his first time ever flying in an airplane, and he landed at SeaTac Airport in the middle of the night and searched the crowd for a liaison who was not there. He did not speak English at the time (only Italian) and after a long, delayed flight, he found himself on his own. There were no cell phones, only payphones where one needed American coin to make a call. With only Italian lire in his possession, he made a collect call to the school to get the basic directions to give to a taxi driver. He then found a taxi out front, climbed in and said: “Pilchuck, in Stanwood.” This was met with a very confused and a little bit concerned look from the driver, who had no idea where Pilchuck was. In 1979, the school was located up a long, rutted, dirt road, deep in the forest, sixty miles from Seattle, where artists worked night and day in an open-air hot shop. One can imagine Lino in the back seat wondering: “dove sto andando? (where am I going?)” Where were you going, indeed Maestro! Since that dark, thrilling trip from the island of Murano to the forest of Stanwood, you have traveled all over the world, sharing your experience, passion for glass, friendship, and time with those of us who have the great pleasure of knowing you. Thank you, Lino, for sharing your art and your life with all of us.

FLORENCIA Lino’s native Italy is a constant muse; the recent murrine patterns in his Florencia series symbolize the energy and exuberance of the Florentine culture. The murrine spread across the glass surfaces like thousands of petals unfurling in a field of flowers, each bloom unique in the way the colors and shapes have pulled and pooled. The open bowl forms offer an unobstructed view of the murrine from two sides, as light filters through the transparent areas and dissipates the pattern beyond the physical boundaries of the glass body.

AQUILONE Aquilone (Italian for kite) is one of the newest murrine by the maestro. The vessels offer exquisite surfaces on which the billowy murrini draw skyward — colorful kites soaring on a summer breeze. The depth and dimension of each individual murrine multiplies as, through the prism of the transparent glass, the eye picks up the complementary colors and shapes that encircle each piece.

KUMA The Kuma works are an exuberant collection of murrini brimming together in an explosive symphony of pattern and colors. Different murrini coil like spiral snail shells, swirl like orbiting galaxies, spread like licking flames, and unfurl like lush petals. The result is a teeming, underwater reef where seamlessly blended forms whirl in mesmerizing unison. Nearly the entire surface of the glass is covered, each small murrine absorbing and reflecting the light to create a vivid and eyecatching experience.

NASSAU The bold and graphic designs of the newest Nassau works bring the Fauvist color palette and form of Henri Matisse’s cut-out collages onto the glistening and multi-dimension medium of glass. Lino has traveled, exhibited, and taught extensively and internationally, including many annual visits to Florida. He is known for his ability translate the essence of a place into glass—from Africa to Australia, Japan, and beyond. Here, the vivid, floral forms on the luminous glass invoke the feeling of warm sun, clean air, and relaxing comfortably in a sumptuous, tropical environment.
