Sailing between Lyon and Avignon, via Chalon-sur-Saône, we seek to explore all things quintessentially French, as we dissect culturally rich cities, charming wine regions and Mediterranean settlements.

You’ll have the opportunity to explore part of the country’s beautiful riverside settlements on either our 8 day Sensations of Lyon & Provence or our 8 day Flavours of Burgundy & Provence vacations, both complete with a remarkable collection of daily included excursions, unique EmeraldPLUS experiences and exhilarating EmeraldACTIVE activities.

“My first inspiration was chef Pascal Ginoux. We used to pick vegetables in his garden and this gave me a love for fresh, organic and seasonal ingredients,”

Although he is dedicated to providing guests a taste of his home, international influences play an important role in his approach.

“After my Diploma in Hospitality, I earned a Brevet de Technicien Supérieur (technician certificate) in culinary arts and then worked with starred chefs in top restaurants. At the time I was on the verge of opening my own restaurant so I traveled abroad to improve my English and learn new cooking techniques.”

“I loved Sydney and Bondi Beach for its laid-back atmosphere and vibe. In London, I really enjoyed the Mayfair area as it’s always busy and bustling.”

For Fabien, the taste of home is always rich and flavorsome.

“At home, my favorite dish to cook is confit of ox cheek, my daughter loves it!

My mum’s cooking is pretty simple but always savory. I wouldn’t say my dishes are better but they are different and more elaborate!”

Day 2 Chalon-sur-Saône – Beaune Chalon–sur–Saône is best known as the birthplace of photography and as the center of Burgundy’s wine region. Travel by road to the quaint village of Beaune and visit the Hospices de Beaune, one of the finest examples of French 15th–century architecture. It’s now a museum and has become a symbol of Burgundy.

France’s third-largest city, Lyon is a former Roman capital, steeped in history and considered the gastronomic heartbeat of the country. Today, embark on a guided city tour, which starts with a drive to the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière, Lyon’s hilltop church, with stunning views over the town.

Then pass by the recently re–discovered Roman amphitheater and walk through the cobbled streets of the old town, including the secret laneways. Alternatively, join a guided bike tour of Lyon.

Day 4 Tournon Join your local guide for a walking tour of Tournon, which is dominated by the 16th century castle and Roman ruins, and is nestled in the valley near the steep slopes of le Massif Central, France’s third-largest mountain range.

Day 6 Avignon Avignon has a rich history, from Celtic beginnings to being the residence of the Pope and central to the French Revolution.

Although a fortified town, it is the Papal Palace which stands more secure on a hill in the center of town, its walls 17–18 feet thick.

Your guide will take you through this historic center with its cobbled laneways and shops, overlooking the famous ‘Pont d’Avignon’. The rest of the day is yours at leisure.
