Editors Letter 2020 the year that took us all by surprise. In some respects you could say it’s been the year in which we all pressed the re-set button. Here and all around the world our modern lives were brought to a complete stand still, with people housebound and in lockdown. This crazy process has made many of us re-evaluate the way we live. Big decisions like our financial exposures and how we interact with each other for work and education, all at the forefront of our considerations – forcing us to ask the question…. how best do we move forward in a climate of so many unknowns? Here at SR Magazine we took an edition off, missing our much loved Autumn/Winter issue. A difficult decision but one that made sense. So this Spring/Summer we are back, Edition No 5. sees us catching up with many of the businesses you all know and love. We also cover informative articles such as a beautiful trek through the Lamington National Rainforest written and photographed by Environmental Science Student Sonny Royal. And another informative piece by the Bee Lady of Canungra, Alex Griffiths – giving us BEEutiful advice on what to plant in our garden to create our own little bee haven. After all… time outdoors really is good for the soul. We introduce a segment called the FIELD GUIDE; a go to for anyone wanting to PLAY, STAY & LIVE in the Scenic Rim. We interview a number of PEOPLE from around the region and find out how COVID has impacted their lives and their businesses. One of those people is Gold Coast Hinterland resident Ingrid Bonner – a successful business woman, Mother of two and lover of the outdoors and Founder and Owner of the international clothing label Homebodii. We chat with True Blue Aussie musician John Williamson, with an update on his activities of late. Can you believe it’s been 50 years since the iconic song Old Man Emu was released? A beautiful new children’s book with illustrations by artist Simon “sketch” Mclean released in celebration of this wonderful musical milestone.

We chat to Canungra farmers Simone and Dave about their stunning pretty PRODUCE – which is now a new attraction for all to enjoy. The Wild Flower Forest will reinvigorate your love of the outdoors with a sensory overload. And we meet Tamborine Mountain resident Sandra Hardie, who has released a beautiful range of skin care – nourishing not only your skin but also your heart. A warm, funny and captivating lady with a wonderful talent for alchemy. Adventuring in our region is always fun especially when you are rediscovering your own back yard – we find out what’s new at many of the PLACES we have previously visited. Glow Worm Tours on Tamborine Mountain, Thunderbird Park an adventurers wonderland and then a more relaxed discovery for the taste buds with an article on the new and improved Tamborine Mountain Distillery as well as The Overflow Estate 1895 winery. We highly recommend you sample for yourself the new Summer menu, carefully crafted by Eat Local Food Ambassador and Executive Chef Richard Ousby. LIVE in the Scenic Rim – the real estate segment that takes a look at properties for sale and where we hear from Principal Agent at Scenic Road Properties Drew Slack-Smith. He provides some interesting insight into why so many people are making those lifestyle shifts, not just in our region but the wide-spread trend of picking up roots and replanting them. Which brings me to wrapping up my letter, I pause to think where we are headed for the next edition…. a question that can really only be answered with… I guess time will tell. For now, I would like to express my extreme gratitude to all our advertising partners. This year has been so tough. There’s no easy to way to say it. And I am so very grateful to those who have supported us through their continued advertising, which in turn supports the wider Scenic Road team. Thanks to COVID the re-set button has been pressed. Gratitude and appreciation, for this amazing country we call home and most importantly quality time with those we love. I hope you enjoy Scenic Road Magazine Edition No5.

In loving memory of Philip Ronald Waller

Exploring the ancient Gondwana Rainforests of Australia within the Scenic Rim Nested in the south-eastern pocket of the Scenic Rim are lush swathes of rainforest that is epitomised within the grandeur of Lamington National Park. Straddling the border of New South Wales, this area is internationally recognised as one of the world’s most outstanding and valuable places for its ecological significance and biological diversity – a natural wonder officially declared as part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australias World Heritage Area. A winding 36km road from Canungra leads you through towering strangler figs and open woodlands providing picturesque hinterland views along the way to the Green Mountains section of Lamington National Park. A treasure trove that is best discovered throughout an extensive trail network that is suitable for all fitness levels and endless bushwalking experiences. The Box Forest Circuit is a moderate 4-hour loop trail best experienced during the early morning bird chorus in an anti-clockwise direction accessed from the Border Track at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat.

Lamington National Park Box Forest Circuit (4hrs – 10.9km loop trail – Moderate) Imagery and story by Sonny Royal Environmental & Ecotourism Consultant / Photographer @sonnyroyalphoto

Explore palm groves, pass through impressive stands of pink-barked brush box and the ancient giants of Antarctic beech trees. Listen out for the distinct ringing calls and mimicry of the elusive Albert’s lyrebird. The air starts to cool as you trail down along the ridge amid a mosaic of green and upon reaching Picnic Rock the sounds of the cascading creek develops from the multi-tiered Elabana Falls. While appreciating the stunning waterfall, the overwhelming serenity of birdsong ensues with fantails swirling above. The elusive Lamington spiny crayfish crawling can be found along the forest floor and hiding in the rocky mountain streams – try your luck to encounter these natives in the plunge pool below the falls. You could truly spend hours exploring the rockpools and taking photographs from every angle! 10

Continue down the circuit to return and admire many other cascading waterfalls along the way. Be rewarded with spectacular views and exceptional wildlife encounters, including shy red-necked pademelons foraging in the undergrowth. The Box Forest Circuit is one of the best trails in Lamington National Park. It inspires a sense of awe and marvel for this fascinating ancient landscape – yielding a premium escape into nature. People visit Lamington and make a connection, one that sees them return again and again. Help to ensure this wonderful area can be enjoyed by future generations – tread lightly and leave no trace!

Canungra Hub Café The locals hub The Canungra Hub Cafe is quite literally the HUB of the village, where you can find many of the friendly local faces that frequent the cafe each and every day. One such face is local born and bred Shayna Wright, who grew up and went to school in Canungra and has worked at Canungra Hub this past 4 years. When owners Paul and Shona had a position vacant for kitchen hand, Shayna a little shy and straight out of school, was excited to take up the position. This opportunity has led to 22 year old Shayna now becoming assistant manager. Shona says, “Shayna is an integral part of our team and we are thrilled to have seen her grow into this role with great confidence."

“Canungra Hub definitely has character to it. Everyone that works there brings something different to the team"

Shayna shares her thoughts on this wonderful opportunity, “After finding my feet and working at the café for about a year, Shona encouraged me to do my certificate 3 in hospitality. That’s when I realised I wanted to continue my studies – It’s been a juggle working and studying but I am now in my third year of completing a bachelor in Hotel Management and International Tourism.” Shayna goes on to share what she loves most about working at Canungra Hub.

“Canungra Hub definitely has character to it. Everyone that works here brings something different to the team and now that I have moved into the assistant manager role I’ve come to realise how well everyone looks after one another. I’m extremely lucky to have a work place that feels like a second family.” For fresh barista Toby Estate Coffee, wholesome homemade food with friendly service - visit the Canungra Hub Café – open 7 days a week 6am – 3pm. 32 Christie Street Canungra | 0422 894 174 @canungrahub

GLOW WORM

tours

The Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Caves are a world-first conservation initiative.

Designed to protect the vulnerable South East Queensland species, our expert tour guides provide visitors with a chance to meet glow worms up close. On a tour within the sanctuary, visitors will experience the wonder of bioluminescence. During the daytime, we learn about how to protect Australia’s “living lights”. Outside the caves, visitors can stop by the native frog exhibit and explore the reforested rainforest. The ecosystem has been re-vegetated with native Tamborine species. The colony of locally found glow worm species has thrived over the past 15 years. Since the initial establishment in 2005, the worms have been cared for by a dedicated team of scientists. Tour guides also play an important role in the conservation of the glow worms. Their combined efforts have been significant in achieving the growth in numbers of species we see in the sanctuary today. Wild populations of the worms have suffered substantial decline over the past 2 decades. The loss of habitat and an increasing pressure from tourists have been the main impacts.

As a result, reforestation efforts and public education have become the main focus of the project. The tours are informative and foster a greater appreciation for Tamborine’s unique biodiversity. As an ECO certified activity, tours support the ongoing survival of the colony. Research and replanting projects around the subtropical rainforest play an important role too. Tours run every day from 10am and are located at Cedar Creek Estate on top of Tamborine Mountain. Book online to experience this unique tour that the whole family can enjoy. The tour is suitable for people of all ages. Cedar Creek Estate 104 - 144 Hartley Road, Tamborine Mountain tamborineglowworms www.glowwormcavetamborinemountain.com.au

BEAUDESERT Café If you’ve been looking for the unexpected in Cafe culture on your way through the Scenic Rim, then this is the place to stop.

PHOTOS BY CARIN GARLAND

Locals will tell you it’s not your average country café, and they are right. You need to have an appreciation for adventurous flavours, as owner Grace and her team are challenging the idea that different doesn’t work in a country town. Not sure what we are talking about then here’s a sample of the menu, starting with the Truffle Oil Mushroom Scrambled eggs, roasted mixed mushrooms with truffle oil, parmesan cream on sourdough with creamy fluffy scrambled eggs. The avo on toast is no ordinary smashed avo, featuring pickled fennel, sundried tomatoes, whipped goat’s cheese and fresh home-made basil pesto all topped with pistachio dukkha. Don’t worry, this team are very intuitive, they have catered for the all-day favourites such as the traditional Big Breaky, they’ve even gone as far as to include the good old savoury mince (our fav). The menu on a whole is exciting and happy, just the like Grace and her team. With a hint of traditional Japanese inspired dishes such as Poke bowls and pork belly okonomiyaki, even the tropical pancaked have been made the Japanese way. The fit out is supremely simple, tidy and features geometric artwork. The vibe and the food are incredibly fun and playful and then of course there’s the coffee. It’s Italian so it goes without saying – it’s bellisimo! Beaudesert Café is opposite the cultural Centre in Beaudesert - it’s the perfect place to view art and eat well. 99 Brisbane St, Beaudesert QLD 4285 (07) 5541 2504 Open 7.00am - 2.00pm Tues - Fri Sat 7.30am - 1.00pm, Sun 7.30am - 12.00pm @Beaudesert-Cafe @beaudesert_cafe

TRACTION Builds Positive Futures It’s a school day, but the students at the Beaudesert TRACTION workshop aren’t sitting at desks. They are engaged in learning of a different kind, happily engrossed in repairing motorbike engines, supported by mentors, Simon Wadwell and Kylie Lowe. These local students from Beaudesert State High School are participating in one of the hands-on, action-based programs run by local Queensland charity, TRACTION, which include building bicycles, fixing engines and creating boom boxes from e-waste. Program Founder, Sandy Murdoch, recognised that not all young people learn best in the classroom. With about twenty percent of Australians aged 15-24 disengaged from full time education or work, he saw an opportunity for intervening early at ages 12-15 years, to prevent young people from falling through the cracks. Kylie Lowe, TRACTION’s Scenic Rim Coordinator, is passionate about providing a positive learning environment, where students are supported to discover and build their own unique strengths, that might go unrecognised in the classroom.

“The young people experience success in our programs, build new connections with others and begin to consider a future of widened opportunities,” Kylie said. “They are reporting positive outcomes for themselves, including increases in confidence, skills, positive connections with others and hopefulness about their career options for the future.” TRACTION partners with a range of local schools and community organisations, as well as youth justice and child safety agencies, to empower and serve those most in need. The not-for-profit organisation has been working with youth in the Scenic Rim area since 2016, opening their first local workshop in Beaudesert in 2018. Since this time, TRACTION has provided 99 students in the Scenic Rim access to their workshops. With limited government funding at this stage, TRACTION relies on the ongoing support of the local community to deliver programs. Local supporters include The Bryan Foundation, Gelita, ACS Engineers and Huebner Motors, and TRACTION welcomes new supporters, to keep up with program demand. TRACTION hopes to support at least 72 local students each year. For more information or to register your interest, join TRACTION’s Scenic Rim Community Facebook page facebook.com/groups/TRACTIONScenicRimCommunity or contact Kylie Lowe at kylie@traction.community.

SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

Sam

Every day is flower day when it comes to Sam. She brings the gorgeous Lydia’s Garden to My Country Escape. Over the past few years Lydia’s Garden has blossomed into a beautiful space at the back of the store. Sam is multi-talented and has a variety of roles within the store, she is my go-to for support.

Kelly Jo

Kelly Jo… what a ray of sunshine, she always has a kind word to say and is a beautiful spirit. Her passion is our online store. Nothing is ever to much for her, and she goes out of her way to help. It always amazes me the amount of work she gets done even on the busiest days. She leaves a trail of tidiness wherever she goes.

Nicky

Our super star Nicky… have you ever wondered who the classy lady is modelling our clothing on our social media? Well it's Nicky. She is our style guru, and I can say hand on heart she is as beautiful on the inside as the outside. Nicky looks fantastic in whatever we put on her and is a delight to work with. Nicky is also our emergency back stop when we get caught short and need a hand.

Ally

Ally started as a junior and has grown and developed to show herself to be a reliable team member with maturity and style. She has a beautiful nature, always caring and trying to do good for others, but best of all she is great fun to work with. Ally works most weekends and helps in the school holidays.

Lucy

Lucy is our sweet hearted junior and if there was ever a girl who knew her colours it is Lucy. This girl is going to follow in her mother’s (Sam) footsteps when it comes to creativity. Her passion and enthusiasm is wonderful and she is the quiet achiever of the group. She also has a gorgeous checky side which we love.

Michelle

As for myself, My Country Escape has been my passion project over the last five and a half years. I love that it is ever changing and a constant source of enjoyment and growth. A highlight of this year has been the new store on Mt Tamborine, Lux and Gather. This would not have been possible without the support of the girls at My Country Escape, and my new business partner for Lux and Gather Nadine. As we head towards 2021 stay tuned for some exciting changes at My Country Escape as the old girl gets ready for a makeover… But as always you are all welcome to come RELAX, BROWSE, STAY A WHILE…

LITTLE BEE’S SECRET GARDEN Alex Griffiths – affectionately known within the community as the Bee Lady, gives an update on LITTLE BEE’S SECRET GARDEN, which has been humming along due to the shift in people spending more time at home. Alex has welcomed this shift with new ideas in place to meet the demands of the visitors who frequent Little Bee’s Garden. “We’ve started stocking a greater range of plants to include more fruit/ veg seedlings, native, landscape, and indoor plants. There was such a surge of interest in gardening as people found themselves at home for extended periods and they turned to nature, their gardens, as a means to restore a sense of stability and purpose, and to maintain both mental and physical wellbeing. We have also welcomed some locals to the Little Bee’s team, we now that have retirees and local artists building and painting bee hotels.” However Little BEE’S Workshops are also starting to return with monthly /bi-monthly events at Tullamore Farm where COVID safe practices can easily be implemented. All other workshops and events are listed on the social pages below – or simply message Alex or drop in to say hello. /littlebees&me

THE SHOE VAULT CANUNGRA In the old bank building in town, in main street of Canungra is the The Shoe Vault. They have just celebrated their 6th year in business. A wonderful milestone for any business, especially a small boutique in country south east Queensland. The success of The Shoe Vault is testament to forward thinking boutique owner Nora - who spent most of her time during COVID lock down ticking off those to do list items. One such item was her laneway shopping precinct at the rear of her shop. Like many during lockdown, she found herself with an unusual amount of time on her hands, she quickly sprung into action to give this area a much needed renovation overhaul. Nora has now re-launched this shopping precinct as, THE SHOE VAULT MARKETS. Nora shares what shoppers can expect to find when visiting her laneway markets... “We’ve done some huge changes to the market, we pulled up all the old concrete out the back of the shop and all the pathways to make it more family friendly for mothers with prams. The roof over the coffee shop was extended to accommodate for more seating, a fresh coat of paint was added to the market stalls and the gardens were given some much needed TLC to bring the space back to life. The response from customers has been amazing, I’m frequently asked if this space I have created is a nursery due to the beautiful greenery people have said they wish they had this at the back of their house. I wanted to create a quiet, friendly environment for people to relax and enjoy their time in Canungra away from the busy street frontage". Lauren shares her family’s vision and the core company values with us. “We know that the early learning years are so very important for our children, we have our own childhood memories and happy upbringings to thank for our values.” Lauren explains, “This is why we have designed the centre and our core values around providing the best educational and developmental opportunities to all children.”

Sanctuary Maudsland offers children a very calm and nurturing environment to learn in, while remaining sympathetic of our natural surrounds. As with the other centres, Maudsland follows the national guidelines set out by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). The centre offers active lifestyle initiatives to all children, including sport, dance, yoga, music and environmentally sustainable programs including paddock to plate meals. The paddock to plate meal experience is led by the centres onsite Chef, Adam Huffines. Adam has been the head Chef across a number of Gold Coast venues; he is passionate about fresh produce and educating young people about food. Adam has worked with Sanctuary’s preferred dietitian Jodie Wilson – from The Dietitian Studio, to ensure all meals meet the nutritional requirements of growing children at various ages.

NATURE INSPIRED PLAY Featuring a timber play fort, water play creek bed, vegetable gardens and misting arbour, the outdoor play area is an impressive display of forethought and planning.

“We wanted to create a play area that encourages children to explore their natural environment. The playground at our Maudsland Centre was carefully designed and constructed to feature natural elements that allow sensory exploration. This gives children the chance to begin understanding and caring for their environment at an early age.” Said Lauren. The internal spaces are equally impressive, featuring natural elements throughout, authentic resources and open-ended materials that inspire new learning pathways.

THE SANCTUARY STANDARD “Through reflective practices, children are guided by their interests and needs, with plenty of opportunities to master new challenges,” said Lauren. “Our team of highly skilled early childhood educators help children to investigate and learn within a safe home-like environment. They are passionate about offering unique experiences and life skills to help pave the way for each child through to their schooling years and all the years ahead.” Now welcoming families, the Sanctuary Maudsland has 7 beautifully styled rooms, catering for ages from 6 weeks – 5 years old. Interview with HOMEBODII How would you best describe the Homebodii brand? Homebodii is our celebration of what inspires us, our values, and what we love. Our intention is to create a living story through our designs that are the perfect blend of paying homage to classic sleepwear elegance and modern daywear innovation. I founded Homebodii in 2012, and I am proud and grateful that it has evolved to become recognised for our attention to the small touches and personalisation. We make quality sleep and loungewear garments using a combination of creative intuition and a commitment to our core design values. Our offerings are meticulous in detail, from design inception to the customer experience at every touchpoint. We love nothing more than the opportunity to provide a peaceful escape in our customer's lives. Our purpose is to serve our community with products that transcend 'just throwing anything on' and becomes a tradition that they look forward to.

You live in the Gold Coast Hinterland, what is it about this lifestyle that you love most? The Gold Coast Hinterland has so much to offer and has been my home for over 16 years now. We live on a family property that my husband grew up on. We decided early in our marriage we wanted to create a space where our children can run free and grow up amongst the trees and nature.

Have you always loved the country? You can't underestimate a walk in the country and I feel that we get caught up and forget to spend time outside to appreciate nature and its benefits truly. I can get easily consumed by the fast pace of life and easily am distracted by competing screens and phones. Living on the land amongst the grass and trees gives me balance and a welcome reprieve from a busy or stressful day.

Being a start-up business from scratch, while raising two children, certainly, has its challenges, how do you take time out for yourself?

OWNER & FOUNDER INGRID BONNER

26

I have always loved being in nature, but my introvert default mode is to curl up on the couch. When I'm outside, I notice how good I feel. When immersed in nature, I think much clearer and become more creative.

SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

Being at home with my family on the property serves as a welcome sanctuary from the seemingly endless demands of running your own business and makes me not only feel better but gives me something to look forward to coming home to each day. In essence, I am a true Homebody!

Your family and husband also enjoy outdoor activities, what types of activities do you all get up to? As a family, we love the outdoors. My husband and son like to spend their days on the water. My husband is a keen fisherman, and my son a wakeboarder. On the other hand, my daughter has become increasingly interested in horses and showjumping over the last few years. This passion is reflected in our new Horse print PJs inspired by our Welsh Cob "Mojo." Living on the land and owning animals has taught us many valuable life lessons and forged a genuine connection to nature. The responsibility of looking after a property entailing horses, chickens, and dogs is humbling and a lot of consistent hands-on soul rewarding work. You truly reap what you sow. A little blood, sweat, and tears is a good lesson because it shows you that you're truly alive and a part of something bigger than yourself.

How has COVID changed your views on work-life balance or travel? Covid has most definitely changed the way we conduct our business. The combination of increased use of video conferencing and travel restrictions has meant annual showings in New York, and LA can now occur online. As for supporting local, we have several gift hampers that we sell both in our store at Pacific Fair and online. They include only locally sourced produce and products. I am loving seeing more people explore our beautiful Scenic Rim and all she has to offer.

Your business supports a number of charitable causes, tell us more about this? We have been partnering with a local women's refuge and the Pajama Foundation for some time. Two local charities where we can see the immediate impact our support has given. I think it's important to re-invest in your local communities and have a more hands-on approach. Homebodii can be found online at www.homebodii.com, and there store at Pacific Fair. Homebodii has offered SR readers a 10% discount code. Simply enter SENICRIM10 at the checkout.

How does this linen range connect with the Australian country?

Within Homebodii, sustainable fabrications combined with soft textures are a must for any of our sleepwear styles. We combine this with one-off hand-drawn beautiful prints that are exclusive to Homebodii. Within the Australiana collection, we commission renowned Australian illustrator Alexandria Nea to paint a collection of iconic Australian flowers and Animals paying homage to our heritage and land. The fabric is buttery soft and breathable, designed for our Australian climate and to be worn beyond the bedroom.

What is in store for you and your family for 2021? Homebodii has some exciting new plans in the works. We just launched our new website, which has a much more extensive range of gifting options perfect for Christmas. In addition to the new function of live preview so customers can see their monogram on their pajamas before they receive them. Within Homebodii, we have such a beautiful team of women and, with the support of the incredible team, have plans to open another boutique. NIGHTFALL LUXURY ROBE SPRING/SUMMER 2020

Local Tamborine Mountain resident Sandra Hardie is no new comer to the phrase, living your best life. Originally from Western Australia this well travelled student of nature settled in the Scenic Rim over 10 years ago. At 61 years of age, she has been married, divorced and remarried, and is a proud mother and grandmother.

As we sit together in her quaint mountain cottage I also get to know Teddy, Sandra’s beautiful rescue dog who evidently has been successfully healed by her tender love and kindness. Our conversation starts with life chats and about Teddy and I am instantly drawn to Sandra’s warmth and humour. When I ask Sandra to best describe her life thus far, she warmly smiles and says, “like for many other people, my life has been one hell of a roller coaster. But there are no mistakes, just lessons learnt and opportunities to grow. I would best describe life like a heart monitor. A healthy heart monitor shows a continuous series of ups and downs, if you have a flat line you are dead!! And cruising is just plain boring and uninspiring.” It is obvious Sandra has a love for life’s journey and a passion for helping others discover their greatness. Sandra is compelling to sit and talk with. She is magnetic and a little time in her presence has a healing effect. When you first meet this wonderful woman the air is filled with the beautiful Sacred Blends products that she wears. Soft alluring notes of pure calm and joy that float through the air awakening the senses. Sandra’s Sacred Blends founding product “Calm” was originally curated for a flighty horse and is the result of her deep connection to the earth, it’s animals and energy frequencies. Everything Sandra has lived and experienced in life has fuelled her passion for helping, healing and calming others. Her family connection to the rituals of alchemy and the earths sacred oils are what make her products so unique. Having experienced a fast paced corporate life, she is no stranger to stress, anxiety and sadness. Sacred Blends were created to help disconnect from the world and reconnect with yourself.

“The formula for sacred night creme came to me in a dream. It contains Frankincense, Myrrh and Gold and is made using sacred alchemy” explains Sandra. The products really were in the beginning made for herself and shared with her friends, and friend of friends, and now her beautiful mystical blends are sought after due to their incredible aroma and nourishing powers. “Besides having plant based ingredients, precious oils, essential oils and flower essences which are healing and nurturing and naturally age defying there is a woo woo aspect. My products are made by me in small batches with love and care and they are then charged with the 528 frequency with a Tesla practitioner plate. This frequency is the same as nature and the heart, so it has a subtle resonance. This is why our tagline is ‘More than Skin Deep’. All the products are designed to calm and balance you.” As Sandra sits and chats about life and her products, I can’t help but feel our conversation is about so much more than a brand or a product. A lesson and reminder of the power and wholesome goodness in handmade products, the magic of something created with passion. The range is now available online but Sandra insists she wants to keep her line small, so she can enjoy the process…as she stipulates the most important ingredient to her products is love! /sacredblendsaustralia @lif3withsandra

Pretty Produce

EDIBLE FLOWERS IMAGES BY AMY MACKAY | WORDS BY LUISA SLACK-SMITH

You may have seen edible pops of colour gracing your plate at local Cafes and restaurants around the Scenic Rim. “Pretty Produce” an edible produce business is owned by locals Simone and Dave. Towards the end of 2019, during a time of continuous drought and bushfire, they bravely purchased “Silverwood Farm” located just outside of Canungra on Lamington National Park Road. A huge leap of faith that has seemingly paid off for this salt of the earth couple. 32

SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

Once settled in their new home, they wasted no time getting their hands and pitch forks in the garden. They brought their award winning edible produce business to the Scenic Rim, and it was welcomed by Chef’s from all over the region with open arms. For many years previous to this, life before farming, Simone was a photographer for various QLD newspapers, and Dave enjoyed a well travelled career as an exploration geologist. Both individually share a rich history with the Australian landscape, their childhoods well spent on farming lands. So when the edible produce business exploded in popularity they looked outside of the Redland bay area, Simone explains "it was time to relocate and expand the business so the Scenic Rim was an obvious choice as it’s rich in agricultural tourism and close to Brisbane and the Gold Coast.” Fast forward one year on, and this humble, hardworking and capable couple are now launching a new concept aptly named the Wild Flower Forest. An idea that came to Simone and Dave after COVID took a hold, Dave explains how taking a slower approached changed their direction. “Most of my work previous to COVID involved working away FIFO. I came home for a break in March and I’ve been home ever since. I‘ve realised there's more to life than chasing money. Quality of life is far more important.”

“We enjoy each others company, Dave loves building things and I love growing things. We both have the same work ethic and feel very much at home here, in the warm community that surrounds Canungra,” Simone adds. “Rows wildly sown with swathes of colourful zinnias, sunflowers, cosmos all dancing in the afternoon breezes - harbouring giant clouds of butterflies. A chemical free farm, our philosophy ensures bees, frogs, bugs and butterflies find peace and pleasure - a safe harbour for the wild. People will be able to reserve picnic spots and we will offer the sale of produce like flower cookies and bunches of handpicked flowers among other goodies.” The Wild Flower Forest swings open the gates this November, trading Thursday, Friday, Saturdays and Sundays between 9am – 4pm. The Wild Flower Forest welcomes families, couples as well as those with an Instagram account. Strict Covid safety plans are followed with social distancing also taking place. Bookings essential for picnics, corporate events, celebrations and gatherings. 704 Lamington National Park Road, Canungra. @pretty.produce @wild.flower.forest @silverwood.farm /simsprettyproduce /Silverwood-Farm /Wild-Flower-Forest www.prettyproduce.com.au | info@prettyproduce.com.au SPRING/SUMMER 2020

Old Man Emu – Now available for the kids! When we speak about great Australians and those who embody the Aussie spirit, it is guaranteed that this particular gentleman will feature in the conversation. Known affectionately as ‘Mallee Boy’, John Williamson, for over 50 years, has warmed the heart of Australia with his music, telling the tales of the Australian bush and its characters as only he can. Aussie through and through, John gracefully dismisses the compliments and praise. From Sydney to Perth, Byron Bay to Broome, John Williamson has seen more of this great arid land than most. For decades, this bush poet has enlivened the spirits of those who call this remarkable continent home in sold-out venues far and wide. This year is the 50th Anniversary of the release of John’s first song ‘Old Man Emu’; the debut hit which made John a household name. First performed in a pub in Moree, the hilarious story of Old Man Emu has become part of Australian culture and is now available as a hardback picture book to the next generation of young Aussies. In collaboration with Simon “Sketch” McLean, the story of Old Man Emu has come to life within the pages of a beautifully illustrated children’s book and is a must have for the family. John and Simon have become great mates after John’s chance discovery of Simon’s art in a hotel in Bunbury, WA. Coincidentally, John discovered that Simon lived on the Gold Coast, not far from John’s own property in the hinterland.

‘After fifty years, I am truly grateful that Aussies of all ages are still coming to my concerts and listening to my songs. We share a love for our amazing ancient land. It’s hard to believe that ‘Old Man Emu’ is fifty!’ Never one to sit idle, the time off the road this year has given John a chance to produce some new music. If you haven’t heard it, check out ‘The Great Divide’. www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU1gGuuAgf8 As usual, John’s view of the world creates insight into our plights as only John Williamson can. The magical timber of his voice delivering yet another Aussie classic. Be sure to get online now and secure a great gift for the family, signed by John, and ensure that the next generation of young Australians are inducted into the wonderful world of John Williamson. www.johnwilliamson.com.au/store/old-man-emu-2/

Some years later, John commissioned Simon to do the cover artwork for his 50th album, ‘Honest People’. At their first meeting they instantly connected. Fast forward ten years and it was a late night, light-bulb moment that it was decided Simon would be perfect to illustrate ‘Old Man Emu’. Simon Mclean, world renowned for more than twenty years, has produced Illustration and art for a myriad of advertising and publishing companies across the globe. Famous for his intricately detailed, full-colour cartoon poster artworks and his diverse and often quirky style, Simon’s great sense of humour and personal insights into John have resulted in a picture book that has something for young and old alike.

Old Man Emu, the children’s book, is a culmination of great poetry and great art and a story every child should know by heart. Instead of celebrating his 50th year in the industry with his massive ‘Winding Back’ tour, 2020 has been a year of great disruption but has allowed John time to reflect on the past five decades and pursue other creative activities on his farm at Springbrook.

Meet

JUST JIMMY

We sit down with singer/songwritier Jimmy who recently recorded his first album in Boonah Photography Inc Mill Photography

How long have you been living in Australia and what brought you out here?

You’ve recently recorded your first album, tells us about this experience.

I arrived in Australia, Sydney May 2017. I was stepping out of my comfort zone, moving to a place where I didn’t even speak the language, knowing it would challenge me!

What an amazing experience to be offered ‘out of the blue‘ a recording contract with Blue Kat Records. It was a great surprise and a day I will never forget.

A new country, a new culture, a new life, a dream, a journey to reconnect with my Italian family and brothers here in Australia.

Cameron Mitchell at studio 446 greeted Sandra and I, we were just there to have some fun and maybe hear my voice for the first time through a mic. The next day I would record a few songs to send to my Mum, Dad and Brother back in Italy.

Did you have any previous experience in music? For as long as I can remember I loved to sing. As a child I was always singing. My greatest moments then, of course were in the shower, haha. Singing tunes I had heard from great artists. I never realised that this passion was deep in my soul and that for so long I hid this passion from everyone... even myself! Australia has given me the freedom to grow as an individual and the courage to share my dreams with people who believe in me. On this journey to Australia, music actually found me! What type of Music do you like to listen to? Music is a universal language, you hear it and it connects and it takes you to any place your heart desires. All we have to do is listen and that’s what I do, listen and sing.

36

Little did we know, that day fate would step in. The right person heard my voice and then next minute a recording contract was on the table. We were given a very tough timeline to produce the album. Because of this ‘covers’ was the way to go. The road was hard and fast, we chose songs that gave me an opportunity to test my voice. Wow what a journey. Together with a great team, including Cameron Mitchell and Linda Weston, who are not only Blue Kat Records and Studio 446 but also musicians, vocals, sound engineers and vocal coaches. Cassandra Miller Inc Mill Photography recording the journey on film. Sandra Oppermann always right by my side to, as we say in Italy “break my balls“ or as Sandra says motivate, encourage and shine a light on the road ahead!

SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

How long did it take to get the confidence to sit in a recording studio? I was just there! It happened and I decided to go for it. The recording studio was easy, I had so much support, all I had to do was trust and believe. Live performances and being in front of an audience is my greatest challenge, but also the most rewarding moment so far! ‘Fruit Jam’ at Oppys eased me into to it, surrounded by other amazing musicians and a room filled with supporters and music lovers helped the journey continue. You have met a number of musical talents, what or who inspires you? Every step of the way so far I have been inspired by so many! The Boonah district has introduced me to so many musical moments, from singing in the local choir at the Christmas concert to producing an album and then performing alone and with other artists. There are too many to name, all have shared something inspiring to keep me singing. You first lived in Boonah when you moved from Italy, what is it about the Scenic Rim that you love and where are you living now? What’s not to love? Most of all when I am there I feel like I’m home. Now I live in Byron Bay so I have the best of what Australia has to offer. Beach culture and a country town. I call both Boonah and Byron Bay, home.

Music is a universal language, you hear it and it connects and it takes you to any place your heart desires. All we have to do is listen and that’s what I do, listen and sing.

What can we expect from you next? While managing my family’s restaurant in Brunswick I have been working on original songs for my next album. Exciting to say, I regularly return to Boonah and there I have had the pleasure of sharing some musical projects with the band Silk ‘n’ Oak and C J Mitchell from studio 446. My musical path is moving in many directions, my priority is to develop my voice, to have fun sharing my voice at live gigs - we are hoping to have a live show at Oppy’s Fruit and Veg in Boonah this New Year’s Eve. “Active kids are happy kids,” well that’s what my parents have always said and with 4 children to keep entertained on this particular day, their parenting advice was ringing true. Our modern lives have become particularly more demanding and yet we seem to be more stationary than ever. So, what better way to keep young bodies and minds active than a day out adventuring in the natural surrounds of Thunderbird Park. This natural wonderland for families and children, is located along-side the Cedar Creek section of Tamborine National Park. This stunning parcel of land has been owned by Bob and Judi Minnikin for over 20 years and comprises of 114 beautiful hectares, with 1½ km of Cedar Creek running right through the middle. The forestry is made up of mature age eucalypt and subtropical rainforest. When you first arrive at the park, it becomes clear just how passionate Bob and Judi are about the standard they set. The staff are immensely friendly, and the facilities are immaculate. Judi takes pride in knowing her staff are attentive to each individual guest’s needs and that everyone leaves with a wonderful lasting impression.

TREETOP CHALLENGE Our day begins at the Junior Tree Top Challenge course suitable for ages 3 – 7. My two girls aged 3 and 7 are first up to tackle this activity. Our youngest Gigi (3 years old) pushes her adventurous side surprising us all and making it to the upper third level. (This is not for the helicopter parent let me tell you). The facilities staff did an amazing job of encouraging the girls and keeping me relaxed as I watched my girls safely zipline through the course, each round getting higher and higher.

LAZER SKIRMISH The boys then made their way to Laser Skirmish, dressed by the team in full camo gear. This was a dream come true for two 9 and 10-year-old boys. Rainforest setting, obstacles and hide outs, they were given the set of instructions and game rules. Needless to say, they worked up a sweat and burnt off some energy, dodging and running amongst other competitors - doing their best to win as a team of two.

FUNFAIR The FunFair on Lake Waterlily is the new attraction at the park and the kids were delighted by the idea of heading to a water activity fully clothed. The jumping castle kept Gigi entertained as the older kids (with safety jackets on) made every effort to make it around the lake without catching up to one another on their paddle boats and peddle bikes. A great activity for those who might want to take it a little slower and soak up the surrounds.

TERRACE KIOSK Now for most parents, packing food for a day out can be half the hassle, however this brilliant old school style kiosk offers up fresh items likes fruit salads, scrumptious baguettes, salads, and the popular burgers, fries, pizzas and nuggets. With ice-creams in hand the girls kick back and enjoyed the break.

ADVENTURE MINI GOLF The boys were quick to get back to it hitting the mini golf course – now running at about 70% energy and not quite full pace they set off with earlier in the day. Set amongst the backdrop of the Cedar Creek rainforest, the course is fun for all ages and will see you making some great putts for the memory book.

MINING Our final activity for the day is the Thunderegg Fossicking and Crystal Mining. This activity was as informative as it was fun. Learning of how these beautiful crystals are formed, over millions of years right in the boulders and rocks that surround us‌. A brilliant finish to a fun, interactive and memorable day out.

BEE GARDEN The Scenic Rim Summers are the season of outdoor feasting: barbecues and sweet sips from the nectar of the gods. But it’s not just us that enjoy it. Our native bees are out in force, living life to the fullest extent possible: revelling in the excesses of pollen, sipping the abundance of nectar, travelling far and wide to explore the beauty of the blooms en masse. Within our 1660+ species of Australian native bees, there are a few that forage on specific plants but many of our most common native bees are generalist foragers. This makes it easy for each of us to not only choose plants that will suit our own individual lifestyles, but will also provide for the native bees as well. Flowering natives will always be popular: grevillea, eucalypts, bottlebrush, daisies, leptospermum, dianella, hardenbergia, and pigface. A flowering herb and vegie garden are also a favourite hang-out: think oregano, basil, rocket, bok choi, sage, borage, and rosemary. Exotic flowers like lavender, cosmos, roses, salvia, nasturtium, alyssum, gaura, and petunias provide plenty of forage for bees. Roses do double-duty (triple-duty if you consider what a delight they are to our senses) by not only providing a food source for stingless bees, but also for providing nesting material for solitary bees. The leafcutter bee snips little circles of rose leaf (or other soft leaf like stone fruit, or crepe myrtle) with her mandibles to line her nest with (a bit like a baby blanket). Rest assured that little holes in your rose leaves is a good thing: don’t spray for caterpillars! If your green-space is the setting for summer feasts and fun, be sure to indulge in some summer gardening. Both you and the native bees, will enjoy it all summer long. Grace Your Space Our homes have never been more important. They are not only our shelter from the world, but where we set the tone for our day and create lifelong memories. Many people cannot see past the things they dislike - the dark areas, the lack of windows. Suz, from Grace Your Space 'has the ability to instantly see the incredible opportunities a room has to offer opposed to the improvements it may need.’ She has the ability to listen to someone and feel their space and personality, then articulate that with decor and small tweaks that represent the person. Suzs’ honesty and can do attitude means no procrastinating. She makes decision and acts on them quickly. Styling is a way to creating a home you love - and it is not about spending lots of money. Often it’s just about using what you’ve got - regardless of it being a rental or a place you plan to renovate ‘one day’. Styling is the art and science of arranging objects to make your home the best it can be today. graceyourspacesuz www.graceyourspace.com.au 0416 265 836 SPRING/SUMMER 2020

New custodians Gordon Chalmers and Dr Shumei Hou purchased the historic business in 2017. With a plan to re-invent their new location, Gordon tell us about the process, “It involved a total renovation and facelift - we are so pleased to invite our customers back to enjoy this fantastic location – displaying a balance of new and old.” The boutique distillery is an award-winning manufacturer of a wide range of Liqueurs and Spirits. The artisanal approach and multiple distillations, using an impressive range of natural ingredients and native botanicals, that results in smooth and unique flavours. The traditional process of using copper pot stills creates a superb range of spirits that provide the essence and foundation of all our products. Then begins the time honoured and arduous task of crafting each individual batch to perfection. Some of the traditional processes that have been passed down through generations from the founder's Russian and Ukrainian family heritage, still remain key to the production processes of the distillery today. As a Boutique Distillery, they have won over 300 global and local awards at the most prestigious International competitions. This makes them the most awarded Australian distillery this century. The amazing aspect of Tamborine Mountain Distillery is the sheer number of products available to visitors, a range of different types of liqueurs and spirit drinks influenced from all four corners of the world. THE BLACK & WHITE BR AID Roads, people and stories of the Scenic Rim. In 2019, author Benjamin Allmon and photographer Carin Garland walked 700km over 30 days around the Scenic Rim in order to produce a book, podcast, and photographic exhibition entitled, The Black & White Braid: roads, people and stories of the Scenic Rim. Together they walked through the worst drought the region has faced in a century, through country ravaged by bushfire, and through the stories of the people who call this place home. Now, after 18 months of research, walking and listening with their hearts, the project is nearing completion. The result is nothing short of a beautiful documentation of the Scenic Rim; its breathtaking beauty, its incredibly rich history and its remarkable people. Prints are available for pre-order, and, along with framed originals, will be available during the exhibition, which runs from Tuesday 6th April 2021 - Friday 21st May 2021, with the book launch on Saturday 10th April, at The Centre, Beaudesert. Carin Garland 0476 896 283 | caringarlandphotography@gmail.com

Flavours Cafe

Authentic country hospitality. Owners Mark and Jennifer share their view on what makes Flavours Café so famous with both locals and those visitors who frequent from out of town. “I really believe it’s our country hospitality complimented with the ambiance generated by the fully restored Butter Factory offices where we are housed (est 1916). This approach to hospitality and our great range of in-house baked goods, traditional rustic breakfasts, lunches and friendly staff ensures we provide a conducive environment for people to relax and enjoy great company and food” Says Mark. Jennifer also adds, “We cater to our amazing local community, both small and large groups who meet regularly at the Cafe. Along with our staff, this is the heart of our business. We also take bookings of up to 50 plus people including bus groups, bike and car clubs and post wedding breakfasts.” Mark says with a smile, “There’s no trick to what we do, we just deliver wholesome food with a smile, so I suppose the next step is to jump in the car or on your bike for your next country adventure and head on out to Flavours Cafe and meet us. We can’t wait to look after you” 8 Railway St, Boonah QLD 4310 | (07) 5463 2699 flavourscafeboonah.com.au | Open 7 days 7am - 4pm flavourscafeboonah flavourscafeboonah

Oppy’s Fruit and Veg. At Oppy’s the message is clear, “we are so much more than just a fruit shop.” Owners Sandra and Stuart Opperman have taken their zest for life and injected it into their beautiful space at the old butter milk factory. The building alone has much history and is a welcoming place filled with fresh and amazing chemical free produce and that high energy - that is the Opperman way. There is always something new to find in this wholesome business. Freshly baked sourdough breads, locally made condiments, oils and sauces, nuts, cheese and even chemical free produce grown right from the Opperman family farm. Sandra says “fresh fruit and veg is food for your body and music is food for your soul.” The families passion for music is evident through the sharing of musical get-togethers aptly named - Fruit Jam. Talented artists come together, from all genres and gather at Oppys - keep your eyes pealed on the Oppy’s facebook page for more wonderful sharings of the world of music. Oppy’s also home deliver within the region and they supply to a number of wholesale businesses in and around the Scenic Rim. Head in to Oppy’s to see what is new, it’s always changing and inspiring.

A quote from American architect, Leo Marmol best describes how perfect the design elements of this home are. “It’s about a relationship. It’s about connection. Connection to ourselves and our families in the way a plan flows and communicates internally, about a connection to the rhythms of the environment outside our buildings.” Each day, each evening, in every season the home integrates with the sunlight and the breeze to maximise the best sustainable living outcomes. Internal finishes are simply stunning and the spacious gardens filled with grand trees and fruit orchard created from the best root stock. The deep rich red volcanic soil provides an abundance of farming opportunity, for the most delicious food for the table. Here you can awake each morning in luxurious surroundings filled with natural light, every window a picture frame of the ever changing environment. Everywhere you care to explore on this wonderful 5 acre paradise demonstrates the careful planning of this magnificent acreage estate. Our beautiful region attracts great attention year in and year out from families and investors looking for a new lifestyle or a business. Around the dinner table many families often discuss the possibilities of a tree change and more often than not their hearts will eventually lead them west to discover more.
