Welcome to the RQHBA Sale Thank you for attending the 21st Annual Select Performance & Showcase Sale of the Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association. We are excited about this years sale featuring an exceptional offering of horses! We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones on sale day.

All foals sold in the sale will have AQHA 5 Panel test for both sire and dam (HYPP, GBED, HERDA, PSSM1, MH). Those results of the 5 Panel test for both sire and dam will be posted at the sale.

Come to the sale grounds at 7:30 a.m. for the Don Brunner Yearling Futurity followed by the Ranch Horse Futurity. See sale horses in action starting at 9 a.m. for the Performance Preview and compare foals side by side during the Weanling Showcase.

Visit with the breeders about their programs. Remember all foals will be halter broke, gentle, and eligible for the 2022 RQHBA Futurities. Breakfast and lunch will be available on the grounds.

Quality of Horses As a group we strive to breed horses that are sound and structurally correct. We are confident the quality of our horses will meet your highest expectations. This is a sale where you can find a truly versatile horse suited for the arena, the show ring, trail riding or ranch work. All 2021 foals are eligible for the 2022 Don Brunner Yearling Futurity and the RQHBA 2 & 3 year old Ranch Horse Futurities as they come of age. Ranch visits are always welcome. All horses will have a clean bill of health and coggins to travel anywhere in the country.

About RQHBA The Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association was first organized in the spring of 2000 when a group of South Dakota quarter horse breeders met to formulate a plan to market their foals, and has since evolved into a highly recognized Performance and Prospect Sale & Futurity, featuring the top offerings from member ranches. Ranches must apply for membership and participate as a Guest Consignor for at least one year; before being selected for membership by the RQHBA to assure that their program meets our high standards.

Each ranch may not sell more than 50% of the current year’s foal production. The purpose of this rule is to maintain a high quality sale without having a total production sale for any one member.

Besides the current 8 ranches in western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming that are RQHBA members, there are also 25 high quality invitational saddle horses being offered in the sale.

Sale Requirements All horses sold at the RQHBA Sale are inspected for quality.

The sale horses are vet checked by a veterinarian when they are Coggins tested. They are then inspected by a screening committee and sale veterinarian on sale day.

Riding horses must have been owned for at least one year and will be previewed before the sale.

You will find member, guest consignor and invitational rider names and phone numbers here in the catalog. We encourage you to contact each individual about horses that interest you.

All horses are available for inspection at the respective ranches anytime prior to sale day. Know that all horses in the sale are selected from a larger group and each ranch has more at home like the ones that are represented at the sale. Your visit is always welcome!

Can't make it to the sale? No problem, we will once again have on-line bidding. Register with The Livestock Link before sale day to get approved and then watch the sale on the internet. Or, set up a phone bid on horses that interest you before the sale.

All known blemishes or defects will be called before bidding begins.

All horses become the responsibility and the property of the buyer when they leave the sale ring. Buyer must make arrangements for care of horses at their own risk until delivery is taken.

We strongly urge buyers to thoroughly examine horses that interest them. All sales are absolute and final.

Registration papers: management will send registration papers for transfer.

Registration papers will not be sent before 20 banking days after the sale. Buyer will be charged $25 for AQHA member transfer or $80 for non-member transfer, which includes a one year AQHA membership.

Sales management, RQHBA, the auctioneer and the announcer act as agents for the seller, but assume no liability. Any representations made are between the seller and the buyer.

Releases: No horses are to be removed until settled for. In order for horses to be removed from the grounds you must show your sales receipt. Make sure all information on the receipt is correct. Also, be sure to give the receipt to the person ultimately responsible for removing your horse from the sale grounds.

This is the first time we have crossed on ‘Ole’ daughter back on Boony...it seems this cross works both ways!! This little guy is a sweetheart! There is a lot of horse in this little package! Welcome to the 21st annual RQHBA Select Sale, Our ranch is located north of Enning, SD. We have been raising quarter horses since 1997. All colts are eligible for the RQHBA futurities and AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge.

Our senior sire, SIR BEA COWBOY is 25 this year. We have kept several of his daughters back for the broodmare band. In February, we purchased QUIXOTE BOONSMAL, a 2006 Red Roan Stallion by Playboy Boonsmal ( Peptoboonsmal) 1st dam Special Quixote by Doc Quixote. He brings with him all the qualities we desire in our herd, a kind disposition, good bone and conformation and plenty of athleticism. We look forward to what he can produce with our Sir Bea Cowboy daughters.

We also stand two grandsons of Paddys Irish Whiskey, who are beginning to make a name for themselves on the ranch and in the arena. PADDYS SHOT OF SUGAR and PADDYS SHINE. The Wetz Stirrup Ranch is an over 100 year old working ranch; it is located in western SD along the Belle Fourche River.

The ranch was awarded the South Dakota Quarter Horse Producers of the year for 2015. They were a feature story in the AQHA Ranching Journal March of 2017 issue.

Stirrup branded horses are known for disposition, bone, brains and speed. The ranch horse needs these traits along with endurance to travel big country. They carry the foundation bloodlines of Leo, Joe Reed II, Driftwood and high percentage of Sugar Bars plus a lot of color genetics.

The Stirrup Branded horses are winning in the performance arena, including roping, barrels, 4-H, halter, and ranch rodeos and even in the equestrian jumping. People say they are a family one horse trailer horse.

We have rode most of the mares before entering the broodmare band. All horses purchased from the Stirrup Ranch are eligible to compete in the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge.

Welcome to the 2021 RQHBA Sale! This will be our 21st sale.

We have been raising Quarter Horses since 1972. We are constantly working on developing strong pedigrees that will make multi-talented horses. These horses are bred to work in many different areas from ranching to various competitive events. We are striving to raise horses with the qualities to fit a versatile performance profile.

I strive to produce foals with super dispositions, conformation, strapped with colorful hides and the ability to compete in any venue.

The mares and stallions run in large pastures with minimal human contact until I gather the 1st of August to halter break the foals.

My parents always told me as a baby, I couldn’t tolerate ordinary milk so I was raised on wild mares milk. Guess you could say horses have been in my blood for a lifetime.

Guess RQHBA is finally turning “21.” It is good to know that what we have been doing for almost 30 years still holds true. That breeding the kind of horse that can do whatever you want them to: ranch, rodeo, go to the show pen or just down the trails is a lifelong passion.

Our mares predominately carry the blood of Harlan with outcrosses to Zan Parr Jack, Roan Wolf, and Cee Booger Red. We know that the broodmares are the heart of any program. Our mares all run out 24/7/365, get along well, and raise a good foal. Harlan and Zan Parr Jack are both in the AQHA Hall of Fame - you will find their influence in our offerings.

We currently stand 2 stallions. Harlans Top Gun is siring colts that have his looks, disposition, athletic ability and, as an added bonus, color. Number Nine Wire is by Vegas Resort and out of a home bred mare will have his first crop of foals next year. All of our Stallions are 5 Panel N/N. We will have 5 panel results on the dams by sale day.

We have had a difficult year, losing Sabre Charged this spring. He was 25% Harlan with 27 AQHA performance points in heading and heeling and is a World Show Qualifier, and is producing point earning offspring. Watch Joe Gamble had to be put down last fall due to health complications, he was a big, gentle, smooth moving horse, his blood combined some of the best from two great South Dakota breeding programs (Crago and Stearns). This year’s offering will be the last from these two outstanding individuals.

This will be our last crop of foals by Watch Joe Gamble. He was a big horse that has produced horses that are well thought of in Montana. His colts are user friendly, and have this smooth way of moving. Magna Blade is a daughter of Sun Frost. Mom has the cross of Harlan on Cee Booger Red which has been a proven rodeo cross for years. We lost Sabre Charged quite suddenly this spring right after turnout so this is likely the last that will be offered from this exceptional sire. Sabre Charged had 22.5 AQHA points in heading and 4.5 in heeling with very limited showing. Sams Lady Duster was one of the last broodmares that Frank Hewes had, and her pedigree features AQHA Supreme Champion Goodbye Sam with some of the most successful foundation female lines in the industry.

Clete and I live 20 miles north of Belle Fourche, SD and both of us grew up in the area on ranches. We ranch with our kids, Casen- 12 and Kyler -9. We ranch with Kristy’s parents, Ralph and Becky Crago. We raise quarter horses, commercial angus cattle and sheep. We use our horses on the ranch for calving, branding, sorting, doctoring and trailing cattle. We also like to compete on our horses in the arena when time allows. We have had success in the Ranching Heritage Challenges with limited showing. We also like to team rope and Clete enjoys competing in the ranch rodeos and picking up- riding our home-raised horses. In 2017 Crago Cattle Company was honored to be chosen for the AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder of the Year award. This was a huge honor for the Crago family.

Kristy grew up riding the Beckwith Dun bred horses and we continue to keep this bloodline alive. He was the cornerstone of the Crago horse program from the beginning. The rocking chair horse brand has been stamped on our colts for close to 60 years.

Love’s Jessie James is an own son of Taylor Jess Tivio and by Beckwith Lobo.

My uncle, Chuck Crago owned Taylor Jess Tivio who sired money earners, pt earners in NRCHA and AQHA performance ROM tie-down roping, heading, heeling. He was foundation pedigree with crosses to King, Poco Bueno, Jessie James, Leo and Sugar Bars. Beckwith Lobo was a full sister to Ralph Crago’s top gelding that went to the AQHA World show in Team Penning and CONQHA Super Horse champion. He was also on the team that won the SDRA team penning finals 4x.

Loves Jessie James produces foals with great minds, bone, good feet, big hips, cowsense and a running walk that is so much fun to ride when covering the big pastures. “Jessie” is registered with the American Buckskin Registry Assoc. and the NFQHA. We raise a commercial herd of Black Angus cows and use Limousine bulls plus a small band of broodmares. Our goal is to produce stout, ranch minded, kind, and athletic horses who have a strong cow sense but can go to the arena and perform as well.

We have raised Quarter Horses since 2000. We have used some of our colts on the ranch and every one of them has shown lots of cow and athleticism, willing to do everything we have asked of them. Previous buyers have reported the same results from arena to ranch to trail.

MR BLACKBURN SALUTE is a grandson of SUGAR BARS and MR BLACKBURN 41. He is a well-balanced grey stallion with a great disposition. He is very person friendly and comes to meet you with a nicker. You can walk up to him in the pasture and catch and load (even during breeding season), a trait that he passes on to his colts.

Stan is truly an outstanding 3 year old. He has the brains, bone, and disposition to go any direction.

He has seen quite a bit of ranch work in rough country including pasture tagging, pairing out, and dragging calves to the fire. Crosses the river with ease. Stan has a real soft feel to him and travels smoothly. He is quick footed in the sorting pen, yet gentle enough that he will pony my son on his horse when we are out in the pasture. His sire and dam are both AQHA point and money earners in multiple disciplines. Stan spent time as a 2 year old in training with a reining and cutting horse trainer.

Friendly, gentle and handy. Wants to please and be your friend. Absolutely sound, good bone and feet. Light pasture roped on, pull the sled, get the gates, trims ties and loads. Quiet around cattle. What I like the most about this horse is his cow sense and athleticism - he will work a cow that tries him like a cutting horse. I recommend an experienced rider.

All weanlings purchased at this sale are eligible for: RQHBA Don Brunner Yearling Futurity Futurity Information: • Purse divided per stallion, gelding and mare divisions.

Futurity is for yearlings only.

• To be eligible, the yearling must have sold as a foal through the previous years RQHBA Showcase Sale; eligibility will follow the horse.

• The yearling must show at the RQHBA Showcase Sale in the Don Brunner Yearling Futurity.

• Entry Fees are $50. paid by Aug 2..

• Winnings will be awarded to the registered owner at time of futurity.

• Original papers are to be presented for show registration to verify ownership.

• Showing expenses are the owner’s responsibility (Entry fees, stall, etc.).

• Payout will be 60% for 1st place, 30% for 2nd place and 10% for 3rd place.

• RQHBA members and weanling consignors are not eligible to compete for the futurity funds.

RQHBA Ranch Horse Futurity

Any horse purchased from a member through the RQH sale that turned 2 or 3 years old in 2021 can compete f Mares, geldings and stallions can compete against oth their age division for $500 per class, plus all entry fees added to each ages pot.

Entry fees are $75. paid by Aug 2. Following is what the 3 year olds will be judged on: 1. Gate (Horseback).

2. Bridge (Walk Over).

3. Logs (Trot Thru).

4. Log (Drag Figure 8).

5. Pattern will be posted morning of the futurity.

6. Dismount on the right side and pick up the right leg.

First Place in each class wins 60% of the pot, secon wins 30% of the pot and third place wins 10% of th In the event of a tie, the horse with the highest rein score will win.

Participants will have three attempts at each obsta before passing. Participants have the option of skip any obstacle the rider feels would not do their patt justice.
