Our latest news

The last few months have been incredibly exciting for Emerald Cruises. From gaining a brand-new accolade (and what we predict will be the first of many for our fleet of luxury yachts) to developing our extensive range of itineraries and excursions, we’re well and truly on course for an exhilarating year ahead.

Towards the end of 2022, our groundbreaking luxury yacht, Emerald Azzurra, won the prestigious Cruise Critic Editors’ Pick award for ‘Best New Luxury Ship’. With this huge honour, we’re more excited than ever to invite you and fellow guests on board for an award-winning luxury yacht experience.

Our latest win brought back fond memories from 2014 when our first river-cruising Star-Ships, Emerald Sky

and Emerald Star, won the ‘Best New River Ship’ award, and it has highlighted how important it is for us to continue to innovate while focussing on the small ship experience that we’re known for.

4 EmeraldEXPLORER
The award-winning Emerald Azzurra Aqua Pool, Emerald Azzurra

Outside of award wins, we’ve been busy with plans for our 2023 sailings. As summer draws ever closer, we’re looking forward to welcoming guests on board Emerald Azzurra’s sister yacht, Emerald Sakara, for her maiden voyage in the Mediterranean Sea.

And, due to popular demand, we’ve added additional dates to our cruises along the Douro River in Portugal, meaning you can now enjoy the Seasonal Delights of the Douro in December for a touch of warmer winter weather.

We have also been looking towards 2024, crafting brand-new itineraries and adding an array of new excursions to some of our most popular cruises. Keep an eye out for Rhine Castles and Moselle Vineyards launching next year (not to be missed if you’re a history buff or wine connoisseur), and for our extended Danube Explorer with Highlights of Budapest itinerary, where guests will enjoy a further two days exploring the beauty of the Hungarian capital. Both are available to book now, so don’t forget to check out our website and request a free Europe River Cruises 2024 brochure for all the details.

As the months roll on, we’re excited to see how the landscape of luxury cruising will continue to evolve, and we’re looking forward to welcoming you on board our award-winning Star-Ships and luxury yachts to join in on the adventure.

Riesling wine and the Moselle Valley

The best Riesling-producing region in the world? We think so.

Traversing three countries—France, Luxembourg, and Germany—and dramatically weaving its way through the Moselle Valley, the Moselle River, and the sloping banks which border this enchanting waterway, provide the perfect setting for growing many grape varieties, from a crisp white Chardonnay to a bold rich Pinot Noir. However, it is the world-famous Riesling grape which dominates this landscape.

8
EmeraldEXPLORER
Moselle Valley, Germany

The Moselle Valley is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in Europe, with vineyard roots dating back to Roman times. Starting life in the Vosges Mountains which border France and Luxembourg, the valley and river flow through Germany before meeting the Rhine in Koblenz.

The vast majority of the vineyards are planted along the gorge cut by the river and in the valleys crafted by its tributaries, with the best land for winemaking sitting on the steep, southward-facing slopes that gain the advantage of the heat and light reflection from the Moselle River.

The valleys and offshoots of the Moselle provide such a prime location for grape growing due to the blend of the cool, northern continental climate and a wealth of sunshine during the summer months (without becoming overwhelmingly hot).

During the evening, temperatures can drop considerably, but the dark slate which lines the valley soaks up the heat of the day to help warm the vines overnight. It is this moderate temperature and long summer season which instils rich flavours within the grapes.

The Moselle’s Riesling tasting notes

The Moselle Valley’s unique tasting Riesling accounts for over 60% of the vineyard land. The flavour ranges from bone-dry to sweet, but the key scents and pallet are diverse and therefore easy to identify.

Colour: The younger wines begin with a pale, light colour and become a deeper yellow as they grow older.

Aroma: The grapes start off with a medium intensity with zesty lime and lemon aromas. As the wines age, the smell turns more intense with scents of honey, apricot, and peach.

Taste: This is what makes the Riesling grape so distinct. The flavour has high acidity but is beautifully balanced with a level of sweetness, making the tastebuds tingle. All Moselle wines have a low to medium range of alcohol content—from 7.5–11.5% ABV—which is just as well, as one glass (or bottle) is never enough!

Ideal food pairings

Seafood - prawns, salmon, cod, and tuna, to name a few

Quiche Lorraine

Thai green curry (better with a dry Riesling)

Key lime pie (better with a sweeter Riesling)

Christmastime on the Rhine

Sam’s festive journey

Our social media manager Sam headed out to our Star-Ship Emerald Sky for a festive cruise along the Rhine. Follow along as he takes us through his journey.

Snowflakes in Strasbourg

By the time I awoke, we had already arrived in snowy Kehl—the Christmas spirit was alive and well.

Once in Strasbourg, we were shown the best spots for enjoying pastries or a piping hot cup of glühwein (again!) before heading to the Cathédrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg. Widely considered to be among the finest examples of Rayonnant Gothic architecture, the basilica features stunning façades and an impressive astronomical clock.

Embarking on my Star-Ship

My journey began in Breisach, a small town in the Rhine Valley. From the second I stepped foot on board, I could tell that this was going to be a great journey.

I took the shuttle to Riquewihr to explore their local Christmas markets, sampling plenty of the local delicacies such as wine (including the glorious glühwein) and cheese before heading to the Dopff winery to taste their beautiful, rich wines. I then returned to the Star-Ship for an evening of delicious food and entertainment courtesy of Nina, the cruise director.

A festive train journey

We arrived in Mannheim early in the morning. Today’s included excursion: a tour of nearby Heidelberg. We took the Funicular Railway up to Heidelberg Castle where we were treated to a sampling of local wines. On our return, we spent some time exploring the town and its markets before heading back to our Star-Ship for the rest of our journey.

The afternoon was spent sailing. From the moment I sat down to enjoy my steak for lunch, I got to watch the Rhine as her quaint small towns passed me by before retiring to the Horizon Bar &

Lounge to enjoy a coffee and some light entertainment once again courtesy of Nina and activity manager, Tine.

We arrived at our evening stop, Rüdesheim, and headed out to explore the local Christmas markets. You couldn’t ask for a more festive experience— breathing in the aromas of bratwurst and beer and taking in the small-town ambience, complete with a brass band playing Christmas songs.

The German Corner

Today, we arrived in Koblenz, an ancient German city with a long and storied history and an aesthetic akin to that of a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. I started my day the right way, with a continental breakfast, before heading out on the day’s included tour of the town.

Our guide gave us a rundown of the history of the local area, including some real pieces of the Berlin Wall that sit along the waterside, before heading onto the German Corner, where the Moselle and Rhine rivers meet.

Here is one of the most well-known monuments in the area, a huge statue of William I, the first German emperor, high on his horse and keeping watch over both rivers. We then took the cable car up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, making our way to the top to enjoy the stellar views.

Later, I headed into Koblenz once more, making sure to wrap up warm as I headed to explore the markets. As you’d expect, there was food, drink, and trinkets aplenty, with some added entertainment in the form of carol singers.

I headed back to Emerald Sky for the evening and was treated to one of my favourite meals of the cruise, chicken in a chipotle jus with veg and crispy potato strings—absolutely phenomenal. I then retired to the Horizon Bar & Lounge for another night of entertainment, and tonight was disco night. We were introduced to Nina and Tine’s disco alter egos via a dance number that I think few could replicate.

Gothic Cologne

We arrived in picturesque Cologne. From our Star-Ship, we could already see the impressive Cologne Cathedral. We headed straight to the city, learning about its rich history, from local folklore to the original shop selling ‘Eau du Cologne’. At the cathedral, we enjoyed a complimentary mug of glühwein before saying goodbye to our guide.

The cathedral—at one point the tallest building in Europe—is incredibly impressive; a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Heading inside brings you face to face with more impressive features: stained-glass windows, paintings, statues, and more. Following this, I headed off to do a little last-minute shopping at the nearby Christmas markets. Returning to the ship for lunch, we set off on the longest stretch of sailing yet: Cologne to Amsterdam, another afternoon on the Rhine.

I enjoyed a lecture on the Netherlands and Dutch culture, then took the opportunity to have a dip in the pool. This evening, we were treated to the Captain’s Dinner, saying a fond farewell and thank you to the staff that had made our trip so memorable before making our way to the night’s entertainment, trivia—my favourite!

Adieu to Amsterdam

I awoke in Amsterdam, and headed out for an included cruise through the iconic canal system of the ‘Venice of the North’, pointing out some of the city’s landmarks, such as the Anne Frank Huis and the National Ballet Theatre. Later, I headed down to the Christmas markets in Museum Square. I was greeted by all the aromas of Europe at Christmastime. Sweet, savoury, and most importantly, mulled wine. One of the things that made this market stand out compared to others was the central ice rink, with people of all ages taking to it. I enjoyed watching for a while before heading back into the city. Our last evening on board rolled around quickly, it being both lovely and bittersweet.

This was my first Emerald Cruises voyage and it was an unforgettable experience. The service provided by the stellar crew and local guides really made the trip with their smiles and overall informative and helpful attitudes; it’s something you must experience to understand.

The most wonderful fairy tale

“To travel is to live.”

Words once written by Copenhagen’s most famous son, Hans Christian Andersen.

The well-storied writer is perhaps best known for his fantastical fairy tales which, although written in the 19th century, remain well loved across the world today—and many of which take inspiration from this glorious city which he called home.

12
EmeraldEXPLORER The Little Mermaid Statue, Langelinie promenade, Copenhagen

The magic of Copenhagen enthused Andersen to write many of his still-cherished stories. The city’s influence surely plays a large part in why the writer’s fairy tales continue to captivate young and old alike today, as Copenhagen once captivated him.

It’s easy to spend time in present-day Copenhagen and happen across views that Andersen would have seen in his own lifetime. One of the city’s most famous (and most photographed) locations is Nyhavn Harbour. The picturesque waterfront sports a number of brightly-coloured townhouses, some dating back to the 17th century, and some of which played home to the writer. While the harbour has undoubtedly become more cosmopolitan since the days of Andersen, now sporting bars and restaurants and welcoming more revellers than fishermen, it’s easy to imagine what the author might have seen from his windows each day as he crafted his stories.

One of Andersen’s favourite spots to spend time in the Danish capital was the famous Tivoli Gardens— although the amusement park was a new addition to the city when he began visiting.

Thrilled by Tivoli’s Chinese-style gardens, Andersen was prompted to write what is considered one of his best works, The Nightingale, a story surrounding a Chinese emperor.

H. C. Andersen was also heavily inspired by the castles and palaces of Copenhagen and its surrounding areas. It was within the walls of Gråsten Palace, during a visit with the ducal family, that he wrote The Little Match Girl in just a day based on only a few drawings he had been provided. Andersen also took insight from legends, particularly with his tale of Ogier the Dane, based on a mythical warrior featured in many Old French poems. Thanks to Andersen’s retelling of Ogier’s trials, a statue of the Danish hero was cast in bronze in 1898 and resides in the cellars of Kronborg Castle. Visiting Copenhagen today, there are many ways to immerse yourself in the stories of Hans Christian Andersen, whether that’s by walking in the author’s footsteps or by visiting the monuments which have since been created to honour his works (we of course can’t talk Copenhagen without mentioning the infamous ‘The Little Mermaid’ statue). What’s clear to all who visit this capital, though, is that Copenhagen itself is the true fairy tale.

The magic of the Mekong

In October of last year, travel agents from the UK, Australia and New Zealand journeyed to Southeast Asia with our Emerald Cruises sales manager, William Young, for a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Getting a taste of the Emerald Cruises guest experience, agents were able to fully immerse themselves in the heart of local cultures. They learnt first-hand about the exciting and inspiring itineraries we offer, visiting fascinating destinations and joining enlightening excursions that make our Vietnam, Cambodia, and Mekong river cruising itineraries so enriching for all our guests.

As the team walked up to our Southeast Asia-based Star-Ship, Emerald Harmony, there was a wow factor straight away, with agents describing her as ‘radiating pure luxury’. Delighted to be welcoming guests on board for the first time since local restrictions on travel eased, the friendly crew were all smiles. As soon as guests boarded the design-led Star-Ship, they were welcomed with an amazing greeting from a crew that couldn’t do enough for them. With capacity for just 84 guests and 40 crew members, there is the perfect staff-to-guest ratio on board, which ensured that all guests’ needs were catered for.

Emerald Harmony exceeded all expectations, with stylish and spacious public areas set across five incredible decks. Complementary dark wood tones and muted colours created a tranquil setting for guests as they sailed between each destination. Designed with total relaxation

in mind, the team were able to take a dip in the refreshing alfresco pool on warm days or relax on the Sun Deck in the open-air space and admire the passing landscapes with a delicious drink in hand.

Each suite and stateroom provided a chic and modern sanctuary, fusing Asian style with contemporary design. With all the amenities of a world-class hotel, Emerald Harmony provided the perfect haven to unwind after a day of exploring each destination.

The team were able to savour a variety of Asian-inspired dishes—a wonderful way to conclude a day of exploration or prepare for one of their many included excursions. Dining in the Reflections Restaurant provided an array of culinary delights and the chance to reignite passions for fine dining and exotic flavours, with sumptuous spices and rare ingredients. Drinks in the Horizon Bar & Lounge followed, and

the extensive menu infused with local ingredients like lemongrass and tamarind, to create special drinks that matched the stunning vistas.

On the first full day of the trip, the team took a short drive to the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek, where a walk through the fields and a visit to a small museum provided insight into the darkest days of Cambodia’s history. Later that day, a visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a former school that was converted into the main prison and torture headquarters of the Khmer Rouge, informed guests of this sad chapter of history.

From Long Khanh Island, known for its scarf weaving and Hoa Hao Buddhist pagoda, the team sailed onwards to An Long. Here, the team joined our DiscoverMORE tour of Tràm Chim National Park, home to Tam Nong Ramsar Bird Sanctuary. With a system of swamps, grass plots, and natural canals, the park is an ideal habitat for 191 species of plants, 150 species of freshwater fish, and nearly 231 species of water birds. As part of our EmeraldPLUS programme, the team visited My An Hung, a small village in rural Vietnam, recognised as a cultural and historical destination. The team enjoyed local singing, wandering through coconut farms, and learning about life in the village. In the afternoon, the team arrived in Cai Bie, where they enjoyed a local home visit, learning all about local life and listening to their music.

14 EmeraldEXPLORER
Angkor Thom, Siem Reap, Cambodia Pool Deck, Emerald Harmony Locally inspired dining

After returning to Emerald Harmony by sampan (small boats), the Star-Ship continued onwards to My Tho.

Set for a full day of sailing this majestic river, the team watched as views of life in the Mekong Delta unfolded along the ever-changing landscape. Cruising past mangroves, narrow canals, fish farms, busy cargo barges, and local fishing boats alike, the river was alive with activity. Waving to the locals as we passed, everyone was smiling. At times, the ship was so close to other boats you could shake the hands of people going by—it was a truly incredible experience.

Arriving in Ho Chi Minh City at night was extraordinary. All the guests gathered at the bow of the ship, eager to witness the amazing skyline as they approached. Such a contrast to the small villages and rural life of the Mekong, Ho Chi Minh City

provided a modern lifestyle in Vietnam with skyscrapers, cafés, and bars. Emerald Harmony is specifically designed to sail into the centre of HCMC, unlike many other ships which are too high to be able to pass under the bridges.

After discovering the city, the team travelled to Siem Reap. Once they arrived, they checked into the stunning Shinta Mani hotel, a trusted Emerald Cruises partner, for a three-night stay. This evening, there was time to independently explore the city’s night markets or Pub Street, both a short walk or Tuk-Tuk ride from the hotel.

The following day, the team explored Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world. Originally constructed for the Khmer Empire as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu, it was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century.

Waking up at 4 am, the next day was well worth the early start to see the sun rise at Angkor Wat. Catching the reflections in the water, walking around the temple, and learning all the history of this unique area of Cambodia was an incredible experience that won’t soon be forgotten. After breakfast, the team visited Angkor Thom, the longest-lasting capital of the ancient Khmer Empire—more recently the location where Tomb Raider was filmed—an incredible walled city with trees

coming out of the stonework. Sat in the centre of Angkor Thom, the towers and faces of Bayon Temple are an astonishing and mesmerising sanctuary, plus the local monkeys provided a fun experience for the team.

The magical trip drew to a close after an evening of cocktails and exquisite dining. the team left feeling enriched with new experiences, the warmth of the locals, and a wealth of memories to cherish. This ultimate Southeast Asia trip has been one of luxury with the cruise on board Emerald Harmony and an experience of authenticity, uncovering rural villages, hidden treasures and ritualistic cultures. Reflecting on their time here in Asia, the team felt this trip offers something for everyone and is the perfect opportunity to delve into the history and traditions that shape the way of life along the mighty Mekong River in one remarkable experience.

Cruises for history lovers

Part of the charm of each destination you cruise through is getting to learn more about how their unique culture was shaped, how their traditions were formed, and how their history has impacted the present-day landscape.

If the past fascinates you as much as it fascinates us, then these itineraries are sure to pique your interest.

Legendary Rhine & Moselle

Exploring the locations that line the banks of the Rhine and Moselle rivers is like traversing the pages of a fairy tale. There are over 40 castles built from the Medieval era onwards to discover here, some in ruins and others lovingly restored in styles from the Romantic period. Monuments in the region, such as Trier’s Porta Nigra, can date back almost 2,000 years and still stand strong to this day. Even modern history prevails on this itinerary, with the Bundesbank Bunker being an intriguing relic of the Cold War, a non-descript subterranean bunker that once held over 15 billion Deutsche Marks of reserve German funds.

Vibrant Greece & Turkey

Widely considered to be the epicentre of the western world, Greece has more history than you could ever hope to explore. Many monuments in Athens, the heart of ancient Greece, continue to stand proudly, with the likes of Acropolis Hill and the Ancient Agora being wonderfully preserved for their age.

In Turkey, you’ll marvel at the east-meetswest vibe, where over 4,000 years of history have defined the landscape. Learn more about the Persian Wars that lasted for half a century, and witness what remains of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Secrets of the Douro

The Douro River was integral to the ancient settlers of the Iberian Peninsula, providing protection, a means of travel, and a much-needed water resource.

The Côa Valley is home to rock art close to 25,000 years old and showcases a captivating insight into the lives of early humans. What’s more, the art was only recently discovered in 1991, as part of a scrapped project to introduce a dam to the Côa Valley. Over 2,000 years old, the famed Douro Valley is also a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, and the oldest identified wine-growing region in the world.

Hidden Charms of the Caribbean

With many former colonies of the US, British, French, and Dutch (among others), hopping from island to island, you’ll see how each of these nations shaped the culture of the Caribbean and how each island has since forged its own identity.

Learn why Saint Barthélemy has a distinctly French flair to this day, and why cricket is so popular in the West Indies. And, of course, the Caribbean Sea was awash with fearsome pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries, with plenty of forts and naval museums on the islands displaying nautical memorabilia from devastating battles at sea.

Wonders of Vietnam, Cambodia & the Mekong

Southeast Asia’s past is as tumultuous as it is fascinating, having fallen under Chinese empirical and French colonial rule, as well as surviving the Vietnamese-US war.

Today, the region has a balanced sense of tranquillity, combining ancient customs with the modern expectations of guests looking to explore both deep-rooted culture and contemporary attractions. Learn more about Buddhism in Southeast Asia while witnessing the awe-inspiring sunrise at Angkor Wat, following a sombre stop at Choeung Ek’s Killing Fields.

When worlds collide

The nations of Central America occupy the tapering isthmus that separates the Pacific Ocean from the Caribbean Sea. Here, continents converge, a vivid societal mix shapes culturally rich societies, and the terrain is amongst the most biodiverse on the planet. All of this has helped form a gastronomic ‘hot spot’ with Central American cuisine now capturing the attention of the world at large. The region’s geography, topography, and climate provide a great variety of available ingredients then used in creating dishes of indigenous and colonial culinary traditions.

Panama

Panamanian cuisine is amongst the most diverse in Latin America. A fusion of traditional indigenous and colonial influences intermingle with flavours from the country’s thriving expatriate community. The nation’s tropical climate produces many local fruits, vegetables, and herbs used in native cooking—and Panama’s unique geographical positioning gives the country access to a large variety of available ingredients.

Hojaldres

Hojaldres are a Panamanian breakfast staple. A round flatbread made from a simple dough that, once fried, produces a crisp, airy pastry. Introduced to Panama from Spain, hojaldres originally contained flour received from the Moors. Today, hojaldres are made without yeast, favouring baking powder as a leavening agent. Hojaldres are often topped with cheese or served alongside salchichas guisadas, a sausage stew used as a dip.

Tamal de olla

Tamal, or tamale, is a Mesoamerican dish popular throughout the region. Tamal de olla, unique to Panama, differs from neighbouring tamale, being prepared as a casserole and not wrapped in the leaves of a banana or yuca plant as is regionally typical. Tamal de olla, (meaning; tamal of the pot/pan), is thus named for the large casserole dish it’s baked in. Ingredients include cuts of pork or chicken stuffed with cornmeal, a variety of vegetables, raisins, olives, and capers.

Chicheme

Chicheme is a drink found almost exclusively in Panama and neighbouring Costa Rica, consisting of condensed milk, hominy, cinnamon, and vanilla. Chicheme is, unsurprisingly, renowned for its sweetness. The primary ingredient is maíz pilado, dried corn kernels crushed in a mortar and left to soak overnight. Finally, before removing the pot from the heat, sugar is added to lend the beverage even greater sweetness.

Costa Rica

Don’t allow the simple ingredients of Costa Rican cuisine to trick you into thinking the nation’s culinary landscape is uninspired. The variety of dishes and the versatility of ingredients make Costa Rica’s culinary scene exciting and frequently unexpected, with finely balanced flavours and a blend of influences. After enjoying the local dishes, don’t forget to sample the nation’s most prodigious export, coffee.

Gallo pinto

The national dish of both Costa Rica and Nicaragua, gallo pinto, is a blend of cooked and fried rice, beans, herbs, and vegetables. The origins of the dish are fiercely debated, with Costa Ricans claiming that gallo pinto came from the suburb of San Jose sometime in the 1930s. Nicaraguans claim gallo pinto was brought to the Caribbean shores long before—and that gallo pinto is of African origin. There are also minor discrepancies in preparation. In Costa Rica, gallo pinto uses black beans, and in Nicaragua, red beans. Meat or eggs accompany the dish in both nations, and undoubtedly both countries agree on the significant import of the cuisine.

Casados

Casados is a Costa Rican favourite, and another dish featuring much-loved beans. This is a versatile dish consisting of chicken, beef, or fish with salad or coleslaw. As with much of Central American cuisine, side dishes and optional ingredients accompany casados. In Costa Rica, you’ll frequently see casados paired with avocado, potatoes, tortillas, and plantain.

Chorreadas

Chorreadas are corn pancakes prepared as either sweet or savoury. Traditionally, this simple staple consists of just one ingredient: corn. Today, you’ll find variations of the chorreada made with flour or eggs. A favourite breakfast food, chorreadas are often served with a spoonful of sour cream.

Colombia

The culinary tradition of Colombia is one rooted in localisation. The Pacific, Amazonian, Andean, Orinoco, Caribbean, and Insular regions constitute the nation’s culinary landscape, and regional flavours depend upon the availability of produce and ingredients. In Colombia, traditions and influences intermingle seamlessly, with indigenous, Spanish, and African heritage impressed upon many of Colombia’s favourites.

Lechona

Lechona is a traditional, communal dish consisting of a roasted pig stuffed with various herbs, spices, and vegetables. Gradually prepared over a long period, the pork is slowly roasted and tenderised before being served. Often served in times of national festivities and personal celebration, lechona can create upwards of 100 portions. Beyond the festivities, you’ll find lechona in the restaurants of all major cities across Colombia.

Bandeja paisa

Colombia’s national dish, bandeja paisa, originated amongst the rural communities of Colombia to supply agricultural workers with enough nutrients to last the day. This calorific platter makes for a hearty lunchtime meal of over 13 key ingredients, including chorizo, beef, pork belly, avocado, red beans, plantain, white rice, and fried eggs to top it off.

Obleas

Obleas are thin, round wafers of Colombian origin, served as either a savoury snack or a sweet treat. Arequipe, a caramel spread, lines the wafers before being topped with cheese, jams, or fruits. Obleas are a favourite street snack sold by food vendors throughout Colombia. When ordering, you’ll typically choose from a wide range of fillings.

Lights, camera, action!

Immersive experiences are at the very heart of travel, and the world of cinema and television is no different. Producers, writers, and directors want you to be captivated by the universes they’re creating, and that means finding ideal filming locations.

1Whether it’s calm and tranquil backdrops for setting up serene scenes, or vibrant lands to capture authentic realism, you’ll discover plenty of famous filming locations with Emerald Cruises. Here are some of our favourite destinations.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

The architecture of Dubrovnik perfectly matched the envisioned aesthetic of the Red Keep, Westeros’ seat of power in the epic TV show, Game of Thrones Many scenes were shot in the Old Town district, and the island of Lokrum (just off the coast) served as the setting for Qarth, where Daenerys Targaryen landed in Season 2 before conquering in Season 4. In nearby Šibenik, you’ll find the setting for Braavos, where Arya Stark joined the mysterious and fearsome Faceless Men.

Paris, France

One of the world’s most romantic cities, Paris has seen its fair share of screentime in heart-melting movies such as Amélie, Before Sunset, and Last Tango in Paris

But the French capital isn’t just the ‘City of Love’; it’s also the setting for high-stake thrillers. Inception took us on a mind-bending journey along the Pont de Bir-Hakeim Bridge, and a murder at the Louvre set Robert Langdon on his quest to uncover the church’s biggest mystery in The Da Vinci Code

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is an integral filming location in modern cinema, particularly when it comes to sci-fi.

Bladerunner 2049 showcased a futuristic version of the Hungarian capital, whereas Gemini Man was rewritten after its producer and writer fell for the city’s charm and made Budapest the film’s new setting over Paris.

The Martian, starring Matt Damon, was also filmed here. Most scenes were shot within Korda Studios, but exterior shots include the Palace of the Arts, the Bálna, and Margaret Island.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna has been the grandiose playground for the big screen’s most beloved secret agents.

From James Bond riding the Giant Ferris Wheel in The Living Daylights to Ethan Hunt foiling an assassination attempt at the Vienna State Opera in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, our favourite spies have seemingly done it all in the Austrian capital.

Even CIA analyst, Jack Ryan, has dashed through the city to escape his deadly pursuers in the hit streaming show, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan

Salento and the Cocora Valley, Colombia

While not strictly a filming location, the beauty of Salento and the Cocora Valley left such a huge impression on the directors of the animated Disney hit Encanto, they based many aspects of their magical valley on the Colombian beauty spot.

The towering wax palm trees, the vibrant colour palettes, and architecture of Salento all inspired the magical surroundings of Encanto, while the Cocora Valley provided ample inspiration for the stunning forestry encapsulating the fictional village.

Wallilabou Bay, Saint Vincent

One of the biggest film franchises in modern cinema, Pirates of the Caribbean brought the islands to the big screen.

The first instalment, Curse of the Black Pearl, saw Captain Jack Sparrow nonchalantly sail into our lives on a sinking ship to Wallilabou Bay, the setting for Port Royal, where he rebels against the British Royal Navy’s regime and forms an uneasy alliance with ship-mate, Jack Turner. Saint Lucia and the Tobago Cays also feature in this smash pirate hit.

Emerald Luna Christening

July 2022 saw us christen the latest addition to our fleet of Europe Star-Ships, Emerald Luna. Members of the team from across the globe headed to Amsterdam, The Netherlands, for the ceremony. We were also joined by Vanessa McGovern, Emerald Luna’s godmother, who smashed the ceremonial Champagne bottle over the ship, as well as Monic van der Heyden (representing Cruise Port Amsterdam), Johan Kaasjager (from Den Breejen Shipyard), and the Dean of Saint Nicholas Basilica, who led the ceremony. Despite a little rain, a fantastic day was had by all!

We’re looking ahead to Emerald Sakara’s float-out

With the success of our first luxury yacht Emerald Azzurra, it’s no surprise that we’re all looking forward to the second in our ocean-going fleet, Emerald Sakara, taking to the waters.
