Before joining, you will receive both a Seafarers Employment Agreement (SEA), and a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Please read both documents carefully and ensure you understand all terms and conditions before signing. Send scanned copies of the signed documents to the Crewing Department and bring the originals with you to the ship. Make sure you keep these documents in your hand luggage in case your checked baggage is lost.
Make sure your passport is valid for the entire duration of your contract period and an additional six months after that. Please ensure there are at least three blank double pages free for visa/stamping purposes.
Every crew member requires either a national seaman’s book for their country or a Bahamas seaman’s book (Scenic Group vessels operate under the Bahamian flag). A seaman’s book looks like a passport and keeps a record of your time at sea. You may be asked to show the book at the airport or when you go ashore.
• If you do not have a national seaman’s book, you can find out about the application process in your country.
• Alternatively, we will apply for a Bahamas seaman’s book on your behalf.
For Bahamas seaman’s book applications, you will need to submit a passport-style photo a minimum of two weeks prior to your joining date.
Once ready, your Bahamas seaman’s book will be sent to the Scenic crewing office and forwarded to your ship, where it will be kept with your passport for immigration inspection. It will be returned to you at the end of your contract along with your other documentation.
All crew members must have a valid US C1-D Seaman’s Visa. Please visit www.usembassy.gov or contact the US Embassy/Consulate near you and ask for further information regarding the correct application process in your country. This can be a lengthy process so plan. If you are a US citizen, U.S resident alien or Canadian citizen, this visa is not required.
If the ship that you are assigned to sails in Australian waters, you will need to apply for the Maritime Crew Visa (MCV) at the following link: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/ visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/maritime-crew-988
You will not be permitted to board the ship without proper visas. It is your responsibility to make sure you have any required visas for the countries you enter on your way to the ship. Please contact the local Embassy/Consulate of each country you will be entering or transiting through and ask for entry and transit requirements for seafarers. Company requirements and a supporting letter will be provided for you to make the necessary arrangements.
Explore courier services or alternatives to expedite the delivery process. If you are not sure about any of the processes, please do not hesitate to ask, as if there are delays or incorrect visas applied for, this will delay your embarkation and incur additional costs.
Airline tickets to reach the ship will be arranged and paid for by Scenic Group. Travel arrangements will be made from a major international airport either based on information provided in your application form or as per our standard companyapproved airport list for your home country.
Scenic Group will provide your return flight at the successful completion of your contract. Please refer to the airline ticket for information regarding luggage allowance. If the airline does not include luggage, then reimbursement up to 40kgs will be provided upon embarkation with an original receipt. Any additional charges based on weight or additional pieces of luggage will be at the crew members’ expense. Additional luggage must be bought online, if possible, rather than at the airport.
All crew members must bring an original valid medical certificate as well as a yellow fever vaccination certificate when joining their assigned ship. Seafarers are required to undergo pre-employment medical examinations (PEME) to reduce risks to other crew members and for the safe operation of the ship. Please thoroughly read the full details below and take the required actions:
• Schedule your PEME appointment at least six weeks before your scheduled ship joining date. This is your responsibility; if you delay, you may not get your required documents completed and reviewed in time for your next assignment.
• Remember to take a valid ID or passport with you to your appointment. Also bring a record of any vaccines received over the years, including your flu vaccine.
• Ensure that you have fasted (no food or drinks) eight hours before your examination. You may have water as this will not influence the tests. If you are on any regular or over-the-counter medication, please declare this to the physician at the time of your examination.
• The examining facilities may require a deposit. A penalty fee may be charged for a ‘no show’ or late cancellations.
• The PEME cost is reimbursed in line with our reimbursement policy.
The general examination includes a personal questionnaire followed by a physical examination.
When joining your assigned vessel, please bring:
• The original medical fitness certificate – only the original will be accepted
• Complete pre-employment medical examination paperwork, forms, and laboratory tests
• All vaccination records/chart
• All maintenance medications you are currently taking for the duration of your contract
• Any other documents completed by your physician at the time of examination
You will receive your medical fitness certificate, which will be valid for two years from the date of issue. If your examining physician is concerned about a medical condition, they may elect to approve a one-year valid medical certificate. If you are declared unfit, you may receive copies of the examination findings and laboratory results. However, you will not be issued a medical fitness certificate.
Since you will be wearing a uniform most of the time, it is easy to pack lightly. Storage space in the cabins is extremely limited. Therefore, a soft-shell suitcase or foldable duffle bag is recommended. Please use discretion while packing.
Everything you bring will be stored in your cabin. We suggest that you pack your luggage in a soft case or wheeled hold-all. There is not a lot of room in your cabin, and soft cases can be folded away more easily.
Make sure to save some space for souvenirs obtained during your travels; you must be able to fit them all in your luggage allowance on the way home.
Please pack all your original documentation (contract, agreement, bank details, medicals, etc.) in your hand luggage. We also suggest that you include essential items, your work shoes, and a change of underwear in case your luggage is delayed. If your luggage is lost en route to the ship, the Crew Admin Officer on board will be able to assist you in recovering your luggage as quickly as possible.
Please check your specific uniform requirements to pack appropriately. You will be issued uniforms for use throughout your contract on your first day; these are to be stored in your cabin.
You are responsible for keeping your uniform in clean and neat condition. Uniforms must always be worn while working. You should indicate your estimated uniform sizes on the application form.
Certain positions may require socks, stockings, or items of personal clothing. If your uniform requires a white shirt, consider neutral-coloured underwear. Check your itinerary and pack weather appropriate apparel (i.e. thermal underclothes for Antarctica).
Pack several casual outfits for wearing around the crew area or out in port. Depending on your itinerary, consider jumpers and/or a warm coat, nightwear, underwear, and shoes. Bring your gym kit, including trainers, and swimwear if you want to go swimming.
If you are stationed on one of our discovery yachts, you may need waterproof clothing and boots if you wish to go ashore. We often have fancy dress parties or celebrations on board; if you are on board for Halloween, Easter, or Christmas, you may wish to pack some appropriate items, although there is usually an opportunity to purchase such things in port.
We suggest taking enough deodorant, shower gel, shampoo, toothpaste, etc., for the first month on board. You will have the opportunity to buy toiletries from local supermarkets when you are ashore. While we do offer a limited selection of toiletries and personal items for sale on board, the range is quite restricted.
Again, check your itinerary, as shopping is far more accessible in some countries than others (for example, if you are heading to Antarctica, shopping opportunities are usually limited and costly).
Bedding and towels are provided, but you may wish to bring your own beach towel. As you will be heading to some amazing places, you may wish to take a dedicated camera. You are welcome to bring a laptop and other technology, but we cannot guarantee a secure storage location. You have access to a safety deposit box in each cabin.
Some people like to read in their spare time; if so, bring a few books or a Kindle.
The plugs in your cabin will be European 2-pin or US plugs 110v, so you may need an adaptor certain appliance. Any electrical items you bring should be rated for 110-220v and must have a CE or UL mark on the plug or tag. Items without these markings will not be approved for use on board. Appliances such as hair dryers and razors from most parts of the world will work on the ship. You are not permitted to use extension cables or electrical items such as kettles, irons, cooking equipment or fan heaters due to safety reasons. We recommend you bring a watch and a battery-powered alarm clock.
Drinking water is available free of charge from the Crew and Officer mess; you may wish to take a refillable water bottle.
Please remember that your cabin has limited space, and your roommate(s) will also bring items. If you have any questions regarding whether you can bring a particular item on board, please ask our Crewing Department before leaving home.
Some of the items you should bring with you include:
White
White undershirts (male)
Nude/beige hosiery (female)
Shoes (uniform policy)
Clothing (for hot & cold climates)
The following personal items are not permitted on board and could lead to a disciplinary hearing if discovered in your possession.
• Any incendiaries or explosives, including fireworks.
• Weapons or devices capable of shooting bullets or projectiles or those designed to disable or stun individuals.
• Any form of ammunition, including those containing gunpowder.
• Incapacitating chemicals or gases.
• Martial arts equipment.
• Hazardous materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation or Environmental Protection Agency.
• Knives or cutting tools with blades longer than three inches, as well as swords and ice picks.
• Any other items deemed inappropriate by the Master for being on board the vessel.
• Drones are not permitted to be flown around the ship or in port due to security concerns.
Special permissions can be granted for certain prohibited items (such as souvenirs like swords, scuba gear including spear guns, scuba knives, etc.) if approved by the Master in advance. These items must be surrendered to the ship’s security staff upon boarding and will be kept in custody until they are needed at the port or at the owner’s debarkation point, where they will be returned to the owner ashore.
Crew members may bring otherwise prohibited items on board with written approval from the Chief Officer of Safety & Security if needed for their on-board duties. A record of all approved exceptions is maintained by the Chief Officer of Safety & Security. Approvals are valid for the duration of the crew member’s contract, and the items must be removed at the end of the contract or placed in the ship’s custody until the crew member returns.
Once your position has been confirmed and the date of joining the vessel is set, the Crewing Department will arrange for your travel to the vessel. Upon your arrival at the port (or closest city) where you will join the vessel, you will be met at the airport by our ship’s agent unless otherwise instructed. If you arrive the day before the ship’s arrival, our port agent will also arrange overnight hotel accommodation and transfer you to the vessel the following day. Please make sure that you bring enough cash or a credit card for unexpected expenses and keep all receipts for extra travel expenses. You will be reimbursed on board according to Company policy. The Company pays for the hotel, meals, and transfers; however, please note that only room, tax, and meals taken at the hotel are covered. Alcoholic beverages, internet, phone calls, mini bar, movies, etc., are at your own expense.
Upon boarding the ship, you will need to “sign on” at the Crew Office. At this time, you will submit your passport, seaman’s book, certificates/qualifications, medical papers, and a signed seafarer employment contract.
A member of your department will welcome you and help you collect your uniform and cabin key from the Crew Office. They will also show you the emergency exits from your cabin and work area and accompany you to the safety familiarisation training, where you will receive your emergency card and help you familiarise yourself with the ship before sailing.
You will later receive a crew card, which serves as your identification and cabin key and must always be carried with you both on board and when you go ashore.
After your documents have been collected, a representative of your department will provide you with uniforms, acquaint you with the vessel and show you to your cabin. You will have a safety induction and familiarisation on the day you embark. The time and location of this will be communicated to you. In your first week on board, you will attend an Induction meeting, with further introductory training to follow. Your Line Manager will also support you and provide on-the-job training. General enquiries can also be addressed to your Department Head.
Officers are distinguished by their uniforms and epaulettes, indicating their area of responsibility and rank. The highest-ranking officer on board is the Master (Captain). The Crew are the employees in the Bar, Rooms division, Dining room, Galley, Hotel stores, Reception, Deck and Engine departments. On Scenic Eclipse I & II,, we also have a Discovery Team.
• The Master (Captain) is the highest authority on board and in overall charge of the vessel.
• The Staff Captain is second in command and oversees safety, security, discipline, and maintenance.
• The Chief Engineer oversees all technical aspects of the vessel.
• The Hotel Director oversees all the hotel services.
• The Guest Relations Manager oversees all guest and crew-related matters and is also in charge of clearance for guests and crew in each port of call.
• The Doctor oversees the medical welfare of the guests and crew.
• The Crew Officer oversees all crew matters, including your welfare on board.
We are committed to the principle that planned tourism activities will have no more than a minor or transitory impact on the Antarctic environment. To guide your enthusiasm into a set of realistic expectations, here are some factors to keep in mind for your Antarctic journey:
• Each voyage to Antarctica encounters unique weather, sea-ice conditions, and wildlife-viewing opportunities. Every activity is dependent on many factors, including weather and sea conditions, and so your journey will be one-of-a-kind. You may not visit some of the landing sites or scientific stations you may have heard about.
• Expedition voyages to Antarctica are about the whole experience, and your Discovery Team strives to create remarkable experiences for each traveller.
• There may be opportunities for close-up viewing of wildlife and observing from further away – on Zodiac excursions, for example, or from the deck of your ship. These platforms allow you to explore the ice and glaciers from a distance, and to put wildlife in the larger context of the continent’s unique grandeur.
• Expedition voyages are all about spontaneity, discovery, exploration, and an appreciation of the need for flexibility. It is a chance to depart from the familiar and the expected – to slow down to observe a pod of whales or a massive iceberg, for example.
• Your captain and Discovery Team – some of whom have visited the Antarctic dozens or even hundreds of times and undergone rigorous training – return each year for the chance to see something new and to enhance their appreciation and knowledge of this unique place. Take advantage of their expertise, ask them questions, and listen to their stories.
• On board presentations, briefings and recaps are an especially important and timehonoured component of expedition cruising that will complement and round out your shoreside experience immensely. Your participation is encouraged.
• Stepping ashore in Antarctica is a privilege, and your Discovery Team will always plan shoreside activities in the best interest of the wildlife, following recommended guidelines and long-standing protective measures.
• Traveling to Antarctica represents a unique opportunity to learn about the continent and its ecosystems. Your experience will deepen your understanding of the importance of conserving Antarctica for current and future generations. These lessons that you take home are as important as photographs.
• Each one of us who visits Antarctica is responsible for keeping it pristine. The great ambitions, hopes and goals that accompany such a journey should factor in the weather, wildlife, the enjoyment of fellow travellers and the expertise of the guides. Antarctic travel is a visceral experience, offering you an opportunity to be immersed in the chill and majesty of the one and only White Continent. Our goal is to help guests experience all that Antarctica has to offer and leave it as they found it – a wondrous and unexpected first-time discovery for the next guest.

Your initial goal is to reach a solid level of performance in the following areas: Technical, Guest Satisfaction, Behavioural Skills, Reliability and Discipline and Safety. To help you reach this goal, you and your supervisor will discuss and record your performance regularly and you will receive your first compulsory appraisal within the first 30 days of your contract.

We take immense pride in our Crew Welfare on board our ships. The crew elects a Crew Welfare Secretary and Chair, and monthly meetings take place involving representatives from every department. The meetings address general matters concerning life on board. The Crew Welfare President takes care of various arrangements, such as sporting and social events.
You will have specific assignments and responsibilities associated with your position. It is essential to adhere to all duties as outlined in your job description or as directed by your immediate supervisor. You are expected to perform these tasks to the best of your ability. If you have any questions regarding your assignments and responsibilities, please discuss them with your immediate supervisor.
Crew members are required to perform all the tasks for which they were hired, as outlined in their job descriptions. It is strictly forbidden for any crew member to hire a peer to carry out any portion of their assigned duties. For instance, a Stewardess cannot pay another Stewardess or a Utility worker to handle all their vacuuming tasks. Any crew member found outsourcing their job duties to another will face disciplinary action. Additionally, any manager or supervisor who is aware of such practices and fails to address them will also be subject to disciplinary measures.
The crew may be allowed time off in different ports when their work schedule allows. When ashore, you are still a Scenic/Emerald Cruises employee; therefore, your dress and behaviour should reflect the Company’s image. Upon joining the ship, you will be issued a crew card. This is your official identification and your cabin key; you must always carry it with you any time you go ashore.
When going ashore and returning on board, you must present your crew card to the gangway personnel, who will electronically record your departure and return to the vessel. This enables the ship’s management to always ensure the whereabouts of all crew. You must return on board according to the crew all on board time communicated. There may be shore leave restrictions in place due to infection prevention requirements. Please check all on board time for crew before leaving the ship.
Per international maritime law, Scenic and Emerald Cruises has established minimum manning in the organisational structure for responding to fires and other emergencies when a vessel is in port. As part of the assigned emergency duties of each crew member, approximately 25% of the crew is to always remain on board on a rotational basis. These duties are assigned by the Staff Captain and Captain.
Cabins are assigned according to your position on board. Most crew members will share a cabin with two or three fellow crew members. All cabins have a bathroom or a shared bathroom with one other cabin, wall-to-wall carpet, telephone, television, refrigerator, security safe, work desk with chair and a small closet. It is your responsibility to keep your cabin clean, orderly and in good condition. All cleaning materials are provided.
If you wish to hang a photo or memento in your cabin, please note that only magnets may be used on the cabin walls. Tape is not permitted.
Crew uniforms and work clothes will be laundered free of charge. Please follow the instructions for the delivery and return of laundry. Uniforms and coveralls are not allowed to be washed in crew launderettes. Some positions have a laundry allowance; this can be found in the Benefit Grid. Washing machines, dryers and ironing facilities are also available, free of charge, in the crew self-service launderette. For safety reasons, only the irons provided in the crew launderettes can be used and must only be used in the crew laundry, not taken to crew cabins.
Violating the rules and regulations can lead to disciplinary action. For any criminal offence, which may result in immediate dismissal and potential civil legal action, and for any rule violations that could lead to immediate dismissal, the first and second offences may result in written warnings. A third offence may result in dismissal and denial of any future employment opportunities with Scenic & Emerald Cruises. For further information, please refer to the company code of conduct, accessible from the Crew Office or posted on crew notice boards.
You will be notified of any customs regulations during your voyage or before arriving in port. The Crew Officer will send you any necessary customs forms to complete. Violating local customs regulations is considered smuggling and may result in severe fines and/or imprisonment by the regulatory authorities. Offenders will also face disciplinary action on board the ship.
The designated language for all shipboard communication is English. Every officer and crew member must be fluent in English to guarantee clear and effective communication on board. When guests are present, and in watch-standing areas with personnel from different nationalities, English should always be used, even in conversations between crew members.
Every fresh staff member must attend the “Induction Training” orientation session at the start of their contract. This session, held on board, introduces you to the company’s operations, health & safety practices as well as other important policies and procedures. Scenic and Emerald Cruises’ hiring process includes familiarisation with the company’s policies, procedures, and rules. The training is designed, executed, and assessed to ensure everyone can achieve excellence in line with the performance standards on our ships. You will be asked to complete various online training through our Scenic Academy portal.
Family members are prohibited from working on the same ship if one must report to the other. If this condition is not met, they are permitted to sail together. Any exceptions to this rule require approval from the General Manager of Ocean Operations.
At Scenic & Emerald Cruises, we prioritise the safe operation of our vessels and the protection of the environment. Therefore, the use, sale or possession of illegal drugs, the misuse of legal drugs and the excessive or unauthorised consumption of alcohol are strictly prohibited on board our vessels. Consequently, we do not employ individuals known to use drugs. All crew members are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Smoking is strictly prohibited in all indoor crew areas, including offices, corridors, landings, stairwells, the Bridge, and the Engine Control Room. This includes
e-cigarettes. Smoking inside your cabin is also not allowed. However, smoking is permitted in designated outdoor crew decks. Always ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished before disposal. Never throw cigarettes overboard under any circumstances.
Smuggling any goods on board or off the ships is strictly forbidden. Violating this policy will lead to immediate dismissal.
Harbouring a stowaway or non-fare-paying guest on board the ships is strictly prohibited. Violation of this policy will result in immediate dismissal.
Permission to have visitors on board in a port of call must be granted by the Staff Captain. For security reasons, an application should be submitted to the Staff Captain at least 72 hours before arrival in the requested port with the visitor’s ID/passport details. Please note there is a limit of three visitors per crew member and no more than 10 visitors in total are permitted on board at the same time, so plan well in advance. Visitors must present a valid national picture ID to the security at the gangway before being allowed on board. You are responsible for the conduct of your visitor(s). You must be in proper uniform while escorting visitors around the ship. At no time should they be left unattended in guest areas.
Visitor request forms are available in the Crew Office and must be returned to the Staff Captain at least seven days before arrival. Note that some ports may have restrictions, which can be found on the Crew Board.
Scenic and Emerald Cruises enforces a strict no-fraternisation policy between vessel personnel and guests on board our vessels. Any guest complaint regarding conduct on board or ashore that is found offensive or uncomfortable will be promptly investigated. Crew members who witness such conduct must report it to their supervisor or the supervisor’s superior if the incident involves the supervisor. Reporting individuals will not face any disciplinary action for reporting.
To avoid misunderstandings between guests and shipboard personnel, the following guidelines should always be followed:
• Never enter a guest’s accommodation unless required for work.
• Ensure guests are not permitted in crew areas. Politely escort any guests found in crew areas out.
• Be friendly but not overly familiar or casual and avoid intimate behaviour.
• Do not discuss sexual orientation or practices.
• Avoid gossiping or discussing ship/company business with guests.
• Do not solicit room numbers or call guests’ rooms for non-business reasons.
• Do not ask guests for dates or accept invitations that might compromise your position.
• If shipboard personnel sense a potential problem with a guest or believe they may have inadvertently offended a guest, they should immediately speak to their supervisor.
In the event of a complaint by a guest against a crew member or vice versa, the seafarers’ movements will be adjusted to prevent further contact between the parties involved. Violations of the fraternisation policy will result in disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal.
Engaging in trading or providing services for personal gain, including but not limited to selling beer, wine, cellular phones, phone cards, food, exchanging or transmitting money, personal services such as tattooing, laundry and renting videos/DVDs or cellular phones, is strictly prohibited on board.
Any crew member found providing such services without prior approval from the Staff Captain, or operating contrary to the approved conditions, will violate this policy and be subject to disciplinary action.

Please keep in mind that while on board you are representing Scenic and Emerald Cruises, therefore please use common sense when posting on social media. We have a comprehensive social media policy that is designed for the utmost protection of our employees and guests.
Mail and packages must be sent directly to the ship, not through Scenic and Emerald Cruises’ corporate offices. Mark mail with the crew member’s name, department and ship name and address it to the ship’s agent at various ports of call. Address lists are available on board and distributed by the Crew Admin Officer. Ship mail will only be accepted and processed for delivery on board on turnaround days. For ease of receiving mail, we recommend not using remote locations.
Crew members are allowed:
Packages up to 25 x 25 x 15 inches, with a maximum weight of 40 pounds. A maximum of three packages per port per crew member.
Large, additional packages and any costs incurred getting parcels to the ship, the crew member must pay for to receive the item/s.
For large, bulky items (e.g., bike, snowboard, surfboard), written approval must be obtained in advance from the Staff Captain. Disciplinary action will be taken if advance written approval is not obtained.
Postcards and letters can be sent from every port via the port agent. Please enquire with the Crew Office on board the ship.
We also understand that working at sea can be a challenging new opportunity. Here are answers to some essential questions you might have when considering cruise ship employment.
A letter of employment (LOE) is a document provided by Scenic and Emerald Cruises that states the date you are scheduled to join our team, the vessel you are joining and the position for which you have been hired. You must always have this document available when travelling to join the ship.
What is a C1-D visa?
A C1-D visa is a non-immigrant visa issued by US embassies around the world. This visa allows crew members to transit through US ports. If offered a position, we will provide a letter to support your application. This visa is not required for Canadian or US citizens or residents.
What is a Schengen visa?
Some nationalities are required to obtain this visa to enter countries that are part of the Schengen territory in Europe. We can help you determine if you need to apply for a Schengen visa.
Where do I get the pre-employment medical (PEME)?
All crew members are required to complete an extensive pre-employment medical examination before joining the ship. In most cases, the examination is at the employees’ expense, and you can claim the money back when you join a ship. The examination should be conducted through one of our approved medical facilities. Once the medical examination is complete and approved by our medical department, employees will be cleared to travel. This medical documentation will then be valid for up to two years.
Do I have to wear a uniform?
As a team, we like to project a consistent and professional image; therefore, we have carefully chosen a uniform for most positions. Uniforms will be provided on board, and some uniform items are considered personal items the crew are required to pay for. Your recruiter will discuss this with you in more detail.
Is medical attention available to employees?
Yes. Our crew’s safety and well-being are our highest priority. Should employees become ill while on board, each ship has a team of dedicated medical professionals that will assist at no cost to the crew member. However, while the medical team is ready to assist in any urgent situation, they should not be considered your primary medical care provider. It is important to join the ship healthy and ready to work. If you have any prescriptions that have been cleared as part of your pre-employment medical exam, those should be filled for the duration of your assignment before you join.
How long would I be on board before going back home?
A contract ranges anywhere from three to approximately eight months, depending on the position. Most senior management roles have four-month contracts while most of the rest of the positions have six- to eight-month contracts. Employees live on board for the total length of their contracts.
Do I get time off while on board?
Ships have guests on board seven days a week. You may not get 24 hours off; however, you will still have time to rest, visit the ports and participate in fun events.
What happens if I have a family emergency?
In case of emergencies, the Crew Office will work closely with you to make the necessary arrangements providing policies are being followed.
To which ship would I be assigned?
Once you have been offered a position, you will be advised which ship you will be joining. Please keep in mind that assignments are provided based on business needs; therefore, you could join any of our beautiful ships.
Depending on your proximity to the ships, you may fly to the nearest airport. The company covers all costs from the registered gateway airport to the ship’s destination. It will be your responsibility to travel to the gateway airport.
If specific tools are required to perform my job, do I need to bring them?
Some positions are required to bring their tools. As you go through the application process, our recruiters will be glad to provide guidance, and more relevant details to answer any additional questions about shipboard life.
In the unlikely case of an emergency, we need to be ready. Therefore, all crew members must attend emergency training and are required to participate in boat drills. Every crew member is assigned an emergency duty which they will be trained on and practice during regular boat drills.
Assignments are based on many factors, and priority is understandably given to business needs. Generally, there are periods where an individual is assigned to a particular ship to provide an opportunity for the teams to build relationships and consistency. However, as with every aspect of shipboard life, flexibility is key. You might be transferred to another ship, as necessary.
While specific position requirements depend on the job you are interested in, there are some essential requirements that all crew must meet to work on board:
• Be 21 years of age or older.
• Be able to provide and clear two employee reference checks or two positive appraisals from your last employment.
• Hold a passport that will be valid for at least one year from when you are hired.
• Have a US C1/D visa (if you are not a Canadian or US citizen/resident).
• Have an AU MCV visa (if you are not an Australian or New Zealander).
• Pass a pre-employment medical exam certificate according to the Bahamas Maritime Authority.
• Meet the English fluency requirements relevant to your position.
Also known as a seaman’s visa, some nationalities need this to work on board a ship and travel to certain countries. This visa normally lasts between two and five years. You will be required to make an appointment at your nearest US Embassy to gain this visa; all paperwork for the appointment will be supplied by Scenic and Emerald Cruises.
This extensive examination is at the employee’s expense and claimed back once you join a ship and can be conducted through one of many recommended medical facilities—you will be advised which one is closest to you. Once this is completed and approved by our corporate medical department, you are cleared to travel and work on board.
Shipboard employees are scheduled to vessels based on operational needs. This means you could be assigned to any one of our vessels in the fleet depending on where a position is open at the time you are travel ready. After your first assignment, we will be able to provide details about the next assignment after your leave period.
You will receive your salary on the last working day of each month through the Brightwell digital banking platform. Upon your arrival on board, the Junior Purser/ Crew Admin will register you on the platform. Once registration is complete, you will be prompted to enrol your new card.
For more information about the Brightwell platform, please visit these links: www.brightwell.com/crew www.navigatorcompassclub.com/members/scenic-group
do I get to and from the ship I am assigned to?

if I miss the ship in port?
Crew members who miss the ship should contact the ship’s Agent who will be waiting at the port. The Port Agent will arrange transportation to the ship’s next port of call. However, it is the responsibility of the crew to pay these transportation costs. A crew may be disciplined for the offence and could be terminated. Depending on the port all crew members are required to be back on board up to an hour before sailing time.
What happens if I get sick while working on board?
While on board, all crew are medically covered and can visit the Medical Clinic for health concerns. If you need to be medically disembarked during your contract, Scenic and Emerald Cruises will provide transportation to a land-based medical facility and repatriate you back home.
Can I visit the ports while working on board?
If you are not scheduled to work during the time the ship is in port, you can disembark the ship with your supervisor’s approval. Occasionally, there are crew-specific activities or tours to participate in.
Safety requirements dictate that a certain number of crew members always be present on each vessel. As such, there may occasionally be times when, although not scheduled to work, you will be required to remain on board while the ship is in port.
Is this legit?
We are aware of fraudulent entities around the world claiming to represent Scenic and Emerald Cruises as recruitment partners, and we work closely with our Security department and local police authorities in various countries to prevent individuals from wrongly representing themselves as our recruitment partners. We strongly suggest that you only discuss employment opportunities directly with Scenic and Emerald Cruises, Singa Ship Management (for Filipinos only) or Wallem Shipping (for Indians only).
