f you knew just $20 would ensure one girl in the world would have the opportunity to make the most of available education for a full three years, you would realise what a huge difference this would make globally right? Well thanks to the untiring efforts and awareness building exercises one local woman has committed to, we all have the chance to help this Christmas.

Fiercely supporting Days for Girls International, Lisette Hulme has created a novel way we can all help just by popping in to Paperplus. “By making a donation of just $20, one girl will be provided with a sustainable feminine hygiene pack, receive valuable education about reproductive health awareness, and be able to attend school every day” says Lisette. “You will receive a Days for Girls Christmas card acknowledging your donation and a brief outline of the initiative. It’s a wonderful way to ensure that eventually, every girl in the world matures with the safety, education and dignity she deserves.”

No access to feminine supplies or hygiene for days is very common throughout impoverished countries around the world. Young women use leaves, mattress stuffing, newspaper – even corn husks in an effort to continue attending school at “that” time of the month. This often leads to infection and even if it doesn’t, several days of every month – every year, can lead to almost eight months off school over a period of three years. By creating Days for Girls kits and distributing them freely, Days for Girls International are giving women the freedom to strive for educated and successful futures, and realise their worth with

There are 760 Days for Girls teams worldwide through 100 countries over six continents so, as you can imagine, the goal to ensure every

girl and woman in the world has ready and feasible access to quality sustainable hygiene and health education by 2022, is not unachievable.

hether you were out to sneak a peak at spring and summer fashion essentials, enjoy a ladies evening out with a glass of bubbles or simply support a good cause, Jane’s Fashion & Accessories ticked all the boxes last Thursday with their in store fashion parade.

Attended by around 50 guests, ticket sales resulted in a donation of $500 to the Pohlen Foundation Trust and on behalf of Pohlen, General Manager Suzanne Lawes and Foundation Chair Lady Margaret Spring were absolutely delighted. “We’ve had a wonderful evening” said Lady Margaret. “We’ve seen some beautiful fashions and accessories and, on top of that, benefited from unexpected generosity from all who have attended.”

In accepting the donation, Suzanne also acknowledged Jane and her team, and briefly spoke of the warm welcome received since relocating to Matamata from Hamilton to take up the position of General Manager at Pohlen. “I have been overwhelmed at the heart and generosity within this community” she said “and this event is certainly further testament to that.”

With the donation contributing towards the purchase of new electronic scales, Suzanne explained that, due to space restrictions, the large and bulky scales are currently used in corridors to enable wheelchairs to be wheeled onto them. “Not only does this compromise privacy, but it can also mean inaccurate weight recording” said Suzanne. “The new scales can be easily secured to hoist facilities in the rooms which is much more user friendly and with complete

State of the art cool store opens

I

cepak celebrated the official opening of an additional purpose built facility last week that now sees the cold stores capability increased to 33,000 pallets of storage across the two sites.

Specialising in blast freezing and the storage of products between +10 and -

18⁰C, the Waharoa based company had three cold stores, each with up to 9,000 pallets of frozen capability and one thousand pallets of chilled. Its proximity to Auckland and Tauranga has seen these cold stores fully utilised as feeder warehouse facilities and, able to handle both import and export activity from major ports, supplies the Auckland, Waikato and Bay or Plenty regions.

With rail siding and shunting services, the opening of the new facility has seen storage capability significantly improved and features state of the art robotic systems that enable shelved storage eight pallets high.

After the official opening, staff and invited guests were invited to tour the new fully operational cool store facility.

In declaring the new purpose built cool store open, Director, Garry Madill acknowledged that although extensions to an operational site had its challenges, the 30% increase in capacity will be of immense benefit to the company’s clients and customers.

Operated remotely, the robot is sent instructions to pick up and shuttle pallets of frozen or chilled goods to the forklift.

Goods are then picked up and manoeuvred by a state of the art forklift that has hydraulic long reach capability that can place pallets up to eight pallets high.

Big Paw! fter 25 years Lea Stanley and her partner Anthony van den Berg, have decided the time is right to run the dogs and pat the cats for the last time at Big Paw Pet Lodge. The facility has recently been sold and with over two decades of loyal clients, literally thousands of four legged family members and more wagging tails than you can imagine, they’re ready to start their next chapter in life.

With Anthony joining Lea 17 years ago, the couple has personally owned and operated Big Paw throughout this time and although they will miss their babies tremendously, both are completely confident with the recent sale, that the business will be continued with the same dedication to excellence.

In the meantime however, I’d like to offer our genuine thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years and offer all our four legged friends a huge high four! It has been such a privilege and a pleasure to have been trusted by you and your family members and I will miss you all tremendously.”

Farewelling our local Lady

H

aving recently sold their Matamata home, Lady Margaret Spring and her husband Sir Dryden have made the decision to head for the Bay and enjoy their next chapter in life under the sun. With just a week left before the tears start flowing and the truck pulls away, it was an opportune time to reflect on the remarkable contribution Lady Margaret has made to our community – more particularly to the growth and future succession of the Pohlen Hospital complex.

Since the day Lady Marg made Matamata home, her feet literally hit the ground running. She has become one of our most well-known community minded icons and with a great deal of appreciation, admiration and respect we are about to farewell a woman who simply wanted to make things better.

Soon after her 2001 arrival Lady Marg was one of a group committed to creating a resource centre utilising the redundant site of Matamata Railway Station.

This began her passion for creating a better Matamata – one that encompassed all ages and stages of its people with a holistic, forward thinking approach that would solidify successful community growth. With a passion for overall wellbeing and the drive to make things happen, it wasn’t long before she was “coaxed” into attending a meeting to form the Community Health Forum which, funnily enough, she attended and left as the elected Chair! Then, invited to stand as a Trustee for Pohlen Hospital Board at a time when rigorous government changes were being applied to

health policies, Lady Marg – never one to do anything by halves, again left as Chair of the Board. In this role, she very quickly identified that Pohlen needed to be operated with a clear business plan that would ensure a successful future for the legacy left by the late Joseph Pohlen.

Sure the hospital was existing on an operational budget, but there was very little left for capital purchases – let alone the addition of facilities that would enhance viability going forward.

It was then, in 2006, Lady Marg was instrumental in the formation of a legally constructed fundraising arm for the hospital which became the Pohlen Foundation Trust. For the first 12 months she continued as Chair of the Hospital Board, also taking on the position of Chair of the Foundation Trust.

In layman’s terms, the Trust’s function was solely to raise funds for capital expenditure, upgrades to facilities and “wish list” resources or equipment to better serve the hospital’s users – our community. Events such as the Long Ladies Luncheon at Longland’s, the midwinter Christmas, Prominent person’s for Pohlen, the Real Homes and Gardens tours and a raft of various functions were organised by Lady Marg and her Trustees with the intention of offering memorable experiences for supporters and obviously, raising crucial funds for hospital improvements. Community buyin was immediate and in following years everything from a major refurbishment of the maternity wing to the hospital kitchen, doubling the size of the residents lounge and the redevelopment of

the unused theatre into an observational wing ensued. It was around five years ago initial plans were mooted for an end of life wing that would offer a family friendly “home away from home” environment without compromise to excellence of care. This became a major focus and with committed fundraising and unequivocal community support, this dream became a reality and was officially opened in May of this year.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Pohlen Foundation Trust has to date, raised over two million dollars, and enabled Pohlen Hospital to embrace a successful and very viable future.

I’ve been doing a gym challenge lately and they don’t call it a challenge for nothing! It’s hard work pushing yourself to all new levels of huffing and puffing.

Kids encouraged to “get busy” for rose show

Traditionally held at the Memorial Centre, this year’s annual Rose Show has been relocated to the Matamata Racecourse and organisers believe it will be a fantastic venue to ensure great public viewing. “From those who have popped in for a look in previous years, feedback

has always been amazing” says Tamara Donderwinkel. “A sea of gorgeous blooms displayed beautifully often leaves visitors a little overwhelmed! Of course the scent this creates is incredibly inviting too but it’s a great way for locals to get inspired about various varieties of roses that grow well in our district.”

For children of avid gardeners – or even those developing their own interests, organisers have ensured there is no shortage of options available regardless of their age. “We have a colouring competition for the little ones in two age groups; 0 to 4years and five to eight years, a photo competition for nine to 12 year olds, and 13 to 16 year olds, and various classes of entries including decorative saucers, novelty animals made from vegetables and/or fruit, Vaseline paper mosaic and of course floral classes that include a rose bloom, stem or miniature type rose floating in a cup or glass” says Tamara. “Four Seasons Home & Garden Centre has been extremely supportive of the event and are the pick up point for colouring competition entries and the drop off point for photographic entries – please ensure name, age and contact phone number is clearly printed on the back. Don’t forget entries close on November 24 so get in quick!

s an ex teacher and involved in youth services through Kiwanis, Ron Moles was pleased to visit Matamata Playcentre recently to celebrate the arrival of three purpose built tables which will be of immense benefit to community children and their families.

“Kiwanis received a letter outlining their need for the tables” says Ron, “and with an understanding of how important early childhood development is to little ones under the age of five, we decided to investigate further. We visited various facilities and with the number crunching skill of fellow Kiwanian Garry King, looked at options that fitted with the centre’s requirements, and within the budget we had set. Once we had decided on what we believed was the best option, we consulted with Lisa Hicks, President of Matamata Playcentre and got the wheels in motion.”

Introduced by Pohlen Pal, Lorraine Price, Rosie the rabbit is a therapy pet and already, has made herself quite at home. “We have a couple of residents in particular that have enjoyed an instant connection with Rosie” says Lorraine.

“It’s a well-known fact that animals can be very therapeutic and to see our residents and patients responding in such a positive manner is wonderful.”

RSA welcoming the whole community

W

ith their recent Open Day giving people the opportunity to check out the new look bistro and restaurant area of the Matamata Memorial RSA, Manager Tricia Hague’s message of the day was that everyone is welcome! There are many still under the impression you have to have family ties to returned service men and women to use the facilities, or become a member of the RSA which, very simply, is not the case.

“Obviously we provide support services to help veterans, ex-service personnel and their immediate families” says Tricia, “which includes everything from obtaining entitlements from Veteran’s Affairs New Zealand to practical help and friendship or support in times of need, but membership is also open to community members and their families. We provide a real family atmosphere and with our member’s draws, raffle nights, 8 ball, darts and various other activities, have an active social committee working hard to cater for all ages.

In building community awareness of RSA facilities, management were fully aware the restaurant area was well overdue for a makeover. Stage one of a refurbishment has recently been completed and now offers an exceptional option for group functions, conferences or celebrations with open plan access to extended space and bar facilities. “Local businesses Matamata Glass & Joinery, Electrico and Plumb.Co have done a fabulous job and modernised the entertaining areas which, with expandable dividers,

can ensure small groups feel catered for as much as larger groups” says Tricia.

“We have full catering services available from light finger foods through to a full buffet and of course, plenty of off street, secure parking.”

Along with dining area improvements, Poppyfield’s has also revamped the bistro menu which is currently available on Thursday and Friday evenings. As demand increases, it is envisaged extended opening hours will be offered which will include special occasions such as the Christmas Sunday roast on November 27. Members of the WWII Historical Re-enactment Society, Philip Hobbs and Greg Thomas were pleased to provide a display of WWI and WWII webbing and memorabilia. Local collector Tom Troughton also kindly lent a selection of WWII weaponry for the recent open day.

125 year reunion plans All Saints Church participate underway at Hinuera School in a RSCM Festival

T

he choir of All Saints Church Matamata joined with other choristers from the surrounding district to participate in a RSCM Festival of sacred choral and organ music, held in All Saints Church recently.

The afternoon commenced with a workshop and, after refreshments, a concert in the church. The combined choirs of 60 choristers sang five anthems, and three choirs sang a bracket of two anthems each. The programme included two organ solos, played on the latest

Makin 2-30 digital organ, which proved to be a wonderful instrument, with very true English pipe organ tones and specification. A soprano soloist added a beautiful contrast to the choir anthems.

The concert concluded with “The heavens are telling” from Haydn’s “The Creation”, with enthusiastic singing from the choristers, and a wonderful trio. It is planned to repeat this Festival and concert next year.

Matamata Ladies Choir Matamata Ladies Choir was stated in the late 1970’s by Gladys Wallace (QSM) with a membership of 12-14 members.

We now have 21 members including myself, the conductor, and our pianist, Nancy Cock. There have been a few conductors including Pat O’Neill who also played the piano and then Jean Bolton, who has been conductor for the last 10 years. I have been conducting for the past year and a half. We entertain the folks at various venues around the town and so enjoy seeing the delight and joy

on their faces – music is wonderful! We also entertain further afield.

We would like to thank the Matamata Christmas Choir committee for inviting us to sing at this year’s concert which will be held December 1-4, 2016 at the Anglican Church. Do come along and enjoy a couple of hours of delightful Christmas music to uplift your spirits for the forthcoming Christmas season.

At 99 years young Vic Maffey can still remember having to wait until he was six years old to start school at Hinuera Primary. Back then you had to be “that grown up” to ride the train and as the only means of transport from Okoroire to Hinuera, there really weren’t many other options. “I remember in the paddock next to the two roomed school, a couple of dozen horses would be tied up and I was always envious of the children that lived close enough to be able to ride to school” says Vic. f Raegan Edwards owned a Fitbit it certainly would have done overtime last weekend with the constant running on the spot to keep herself from crying! The reality of what started out as hoping to add an extra bedroom to their Browne Street home turned out to be a full renovation and refurbishment of their entire house, and it’s all thanks to the extreme generosity of local business and community members.

Backing up around 18 months, it was friends of Raegan and her partner Daniel Twidle who started brainstorming ideas about how the family of five could raise the funds necessary to extend their home after being declined extra mortgage funds. Danielle Cullen first suggested a “Give a little” page which explained the physical and emotional needs of Tamzyn, Daniel and Raegan’s eldest daughter. Although she has no official diagnosis, Tamzyn has been classed with the motor function symptoms of a child with Cerebral Palsy. She has severe epilepsy, cortical visual impairment, suffers from reflux and has global development delay. To simplify this, Tamzyn can’t walk, talk, see or eat. Obviously as she matures, her physical needs become

increasingly important and with two younger siblings, a very small family home and inadequate space for hoist equipment or free access for a wheelchair, something had to change. Although donations were warmly accepted through the charity page, fundraising didn’t come close to what would be needed for the extension – and that’s where Variety Bash came in!

Murray O’Donnell, a “basher” with the Variety Bash charity organisation, has been instrumental through the entire fundraising and refurbishment project.

“Basher”, a gala day was organised where the Variety Club brought along their crazy fleet of vehicles, hoards of volunteers and entertainers, and a whole lot of hope! After that Murray continued with the cause and joined with a small committee to organise a charity auction evening at Tracs Sports Bar where many local businesses and organisations donated goods and services for auction.

Funds were climbing and before long, Danielle’s husband Daniel, an architect, began working on initial plans that would fit the family’s needs going forward. Momentum was starting and through Murray’s involvement with

Variety, fellow bashers John “Cocksy” Cocks and his partner Dana stepped up as project managers. They visited the Browne Street home and after confirming an extension was doable, advised Raegan and Daniel what would be required, how many volunteers would be needed and that it would need to be within a three day time frame! Raegan got busy and appealing to the community, local businesses and basically anyone she could think of through a “Let’s build Tamzyn’s bedrrom” Facebook page and endless phone calls, began recruiting help.

n hearing Cocksy the builder had confirmed an entire rebuild that would start on Friday and be complete by Sunday evening, local businesses wasted no time in putting their hand up to help. They started contacting their suppliers and colleagues, rustling up volunteers and saw the opportunity to be involved as a real community effort.

Brett Hodge, owner/operator of Matamata Post & Rails ITM, says the project was like a whirlwind! “It had to come together quickly, and it did – like magic” he says. “It was incredibly rewarding to see so many locals pitch in with upwards of 70 people onsite each day, and working alongside Cocksy certainly inspired us all.” In conjunction with suppliers and

other local businesses, Brett was pleased to provide essential products from wallboards to insulation, floor joists to weatherboards and mouldings, and frames and trusses.

Also working with trade contacts, Leo Kingston owner/operator of Colourplus, was overwhelmed with the generosity of one of his major suppliers, Dulux. “After contacting them and explaining the project, they were pleased to support us with literally thousands of dollars worth of interior and exterior paint” he says. “The build was so much more than I had initially thought and to have such support for one local family from their head office was incredibly generous.”

Including a master bedroom for Daniel and Raegan, a new bedroom and large wet area bathroom for Tamzyn, the extension is a seamless addition to the style and era of the weatherboard home.

The Browne Street property last Friday morning was in dire need of repair and in coming years, was simply not a viable option for the increasing physical needs of Tamzyn and her family.

Although the front of the home is physically recognisable, the entire interior has been stripped, remodelled and refurbished with a comprehensive rear extension.

Changing the living areas to an open plan layout, removing the fireplace and replacing almost all interior gib and insulation, will provide a warm, dry environment for years to come. Two of the existing bedrooms remained which, with the addition, will allow each of the three children their own room with no shortage of space.

Honouring the Services

ith a police car, fire engine and community patrol vehicle all parked outside St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Muera Street on Sunday morning it would have easy to wonder what was going on. There were personnel from all the services including St. John’s there to parade and be welcomed into the church for an “Honouring of the Services” celebration. This was St Andrew’s church’s way of saying, “Thank you” to those who serve and protect in our community.

After the service there was a blessing of personnel and machines followed by a barbeque lunch with just short of a hundred attending. All present appreciated the time both fire and police spent with the kids showing them and letting them hear the sirens and see all the ‘bells and whistles’ on the appliances.

So often we forget the time, energy and effort that goes into the running of, preparation, training and high performance levels of our local services. Other than police, they are all volunteers and family time and free time is often taken

up through serving the community. With an age range from nine to almost eighty, men and women, boys and girls are all willing to give of their time and energy to ensure our safety locally. We sincerely thank you all!

November tournament brings in good results

long with major sponsor J Swap Contractor’s Ltd, dozens of local businesses and individuals were pleased to contribute to the November tournament at Matamata Fishing Club which was well supported with 81 anglers weighing in a total of 340 fish.

As well as sponsoring a major part of the prizes, Swaps are also offered a trip on their beautiful launch up for auction

at the weigh in where the successful bidder will enjoy use of the boat and skipper for the December competition – an over nighter at Mayor Island for five people. All proceeds from the auction will go into prizes for the December competition, so on behalf of Matamata Fishing Club, many thanks to Swaps for their generosity, it is appreciated.

Heading out to Whakatane with Jelly and Kylie, Kevin Andersen was pretty pleased with his 1.225kg terakihi. The heaviest weighed in, Kevin was stoked to take out the category and win some pretty fantastic prizes – a particularly good effort considering he’s a new member of Matamata Fishing Club!

Heading to the Waikawau Mussel farms up near Coromandel paid off for Eileen Ward. She was over the moon with this beauty that weighed 6.540kg.

Just out from Fletcher’s Bay is a great little spot called Square Top Island. Stephen Butcher wasn’t disappointed that’s for sure – he bagged this magnificent kingy that gutted, weighed in at 16.05kg.

S Our two to three year old long haired black and white female is the sweetest young girl. She loves attention, cuddles, being brushed and human contact. She also doesn’t mind other cats so would suit any family. She will need a regular brush to keep the knots out.

Nearing completion!

pring has sprung the grass is ris’ I wonder where the birdie’s is? Well, the grass is certainly rising at Pohlen Park and along with it, the anticipation of moving into the new clubhouse facility that is nearing completion.

With the building now weather proof, work has started in earnest on the interior. The colour scheme was all worked out by a team of ladies who had great fun making sure everything was in keeping with the club’s profile and even the club’s colours were catered for.

Uni-sex toilets, kitchen, starter’s office, mallet room and lounge all came in for the same attention to detail that has been part of the project from the start.

The word is we will have our opening

day during the first couple of weeks in January.

The greens are also coming away well and the good Waikato rain and sunshine mix has proved itself once again. We are not looking for perfection from day one but the greens are in very good order and we now only have to wait for the finer grasses to take over and give us the base we need for top grade conditions.

To achieve this we are cutting are every two days and the results are well up to expectation.

The finishing touches are going onto the rail fencing with ball barriers being set. These will incorporate seats for those who a feeling the pace of play a bit much! Supplied

There’s a catch, however – to win the prize, the winner must be dressed to the nines to impress the judges. And that’s not the only prize – there are scores more.

Event organiser BUSC (Building Unity for a Safer Community) chair Vicky Burgess-Munro has been overwhelmed with the support shown by way of prizes and sponsorship from Matamata’s business community. “It’s encouraging to see

businesses get behind White-Out,� she said of the event which encourages Matamata to show a united front against family violence Organisers are urging participants to dress up in an eye-catching fashion – white or otherwise. There are handsome prizes on offer. The bestdressed school group and best-dressed pre-school group will each win sports gear valued at $250, while the bestdressed wheels; best dressed senior and best dressed junior will also receive generous prizes. There are also numerous spot prizes to be given away on the day.

The Police BBQ will be on-site with the boys in blue sizzling up a storm, while other food stalls will also be available. “All we need now is for people – individuals, families, groups and businesses – to turn out in force,� said Vicky. “It would be so encouraging to see the Matamata and Waharoa communities stand together against family violence.� The White Out event will be held at Waharoa Road East from 10am-noon this Saturday.

1918 Armistice Day still commemorated

F

or 98 years Armistice Day commemorations are held at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year to remember the signing of the Armistice, (or the cease firing agreement), to finish World War One or the Great War as it was called, between the Allies and Germany in 1918. The signing took place in a railway carriage on a siding on November 9th and was to come into force on the 11th November 1918. On this day we remember that the guns fell silent and also remember those who died in the First World War and all subsequent wars.

In Matamata back then the news of the signing of peace in November 1918 cost one Matamata man his hat. When the premature news was posted at the Post Office, (there was no texting, email, radio or T.V. in those days), Mr Kuhtz threw his hat in the air and jumped on it when it landed.

Unfortunately he had steel nails in his boots and that was the end of the hat. In those days a man did not leave his house

unless he was wearing his hat. When the official news of the armistice came several days later on 11 November 1918, the Glaxo Factory siren kept blowing for about five minutes. This dairy factory was sited where Caltex Garage is now. Apart from some isolated cheering the morning was quiet as all businesses closed down.

In the afternoon a procession of over thirty decorated vehicles, riders on horseback and Jones’s band left the post office for a tour of the town. The official telegram was read to a large audience by Mr Joe Price, Chairman of the Town Board, and speeches were made expressing the hope that war would be ended for all time and that the country would do its duty to returned soldiers. A. G. Yardley recalled however that they burnt an effigy of the Kaiser in front of the Town Hall sited then where O’ Del’Emz cafe is today. “There was great jubilation, everyone being as happy as a sandboy,� reported the Matamata Record at the time. Williamson (later McDonnell) is recorded as saying, “I shall never forget Armistice Day! There was singing and dancing in the dusty main street of Matamata. Although we celebrated the signing of the armistice, our hearts ached for those whose loved ones would not be returning�.

However the great influenza epidemic had already reached Matamata. The school was closed and church serves and meetings had been cancelled. The government announced that 19 July 1919 would be the date for the official nation - wide public peace celebrations. By then most of the returned servicemen and women had been welcomed back from overseas.

Matamata held a grand parade of horses and decorated floats to celebrate the ending of the First World War. In recent years the yearly commemoration is held in turn in Matamata, Morrinsville or Te Aroha and is organised by the local RSA. This year it was held in Morrinsville. Joan Stanley

Fishing Report

H

i, good to catch up with you again, hope all is great in your camp. We seem to be still struggling to get a pattern of nice warm spring weather, however the rain is good at this time of the year, for some anyway.

As I mentioned in the last report, evening fishing on the local streams is very good at the moment. When you are choosing your fly or spinner go for something looking like a beetle or an insect.

In the Rotorua area the trout fishing is still a bit patchy. A big game changer there will be some hotter weather, this will cause a thermal cline layer on the lakes and help big time with the jigging. The pick of the lakes if you had to choose one would be Tarawera, closely followed by Lake Rotorua, then Rotioiti.

In the Taupo area the good story on the rivers just continues on. My man down there fishes virtually every day and he said he has not missed with a nice fish or two on every trip. Ken said his pick would be the Tauranga/Taupo. Out on the lake early morning harling with a bright pink lure or the new lumo chartreuse.

To the sea, if you get a chance get out to the west coast. Both Kawhia and Raglan are going great guns. Last week Dwade Pinny took his new boat out on its first trip and hit the jackpot. He was back at the wharf by mid-afternoon and had a limit bag on board.

Now, two of the snapper were over that magical 20 pound mark and eight of them were over 15 pound, now that’s fishing.

Dwade has been fishing north of Kawhia in about 62 metres of water, green and chartreuse colours seem to be working well.

Up to the Coromandel and that is another area that is just doing it big time. At our last fishing club competition last week the best snapper was caught in the far north by

The second to biggest was caught by Eileen Ward up in the mussel farms, by the way Hugh’s was just over 20 pounds and Eileen’s not far away. The Clothier family also weighed in a bin of beautiful snapper from up there so given the choice that’s where I would be heading. Very good tides this week too with low tide mid to late afternoon and high tides just after the change of light. Big tides this week too with the full moon on the 15th.

Over to the Mercury Bay area, nice tides for evening straylining this week, fish the edges of the foul ground around Koropuki and the southern end of Green Island.

In the Bay of Plenty, we went out to Mayor Island last week and while we didn’t get any trophy winners, we got a very nice bin of snapper up to 14 pound. Fishing in 18 metres on the western side off the bolder bank, the burley took a while to work but once it did we were away.

Another good spot in the bay at the moment is the foul ground off the southern end of the knoll at Motiti. There is a big reef there running down towards Town Point and it comes up to about 8 metres of water.
