ST PATRICKS DAY PARADE

4

Shannon’s St Patricks Day Parade was originally started around 1977 by a local residents group. The first few parades took place up and down Corrib Drive. In later years the Town Council took over the running of the parade and the route switched from Corrib Drive to the Town Centre. The original parades where quite small in comparison with todays parades, with only one band and a few groups taking part. Since then the parade has grown from strength to strength with three bands now taking part - the Boherbuoy Brass and Reed Band, Ennis Brass Band and the CBS - as well as numerous community groups, clubs and societies. Some of this years participants are the new Currach Club, Midwest Indian/Irish Association, Wolfe Tones, Ballycasey Craft Centre, Taekwon-Do Club, Shannon & Newmarket Scouts, EcoWarm, and KidzHaven, to name a few. The Grand Masters for the parade this year are Shannon Town United AFC. They are very proud to have been selected to lead the parade this year as it is their 40th anniversary. Shannon Town along with 7 other clubs in Ireland have the great honour of being chosen to become Celtic community Academy Clubs. Each year

t: 086 3714804

e: judith@scenemedia.ie

two players from each age group from the eight clubs form an Ireland Commuity Academy Team and travel over to play their Celtic counterparts in front of the Celtic scouts, which is a great opportunity for the young players. Also, coaches from the club will be going over to Glasgow to receive coaching - learning how to train the Celtic way. They are always looking for new players and anyone wishing to join should ring John on 085 2102736 or check the website www. shannontownunitedafc.com. The Master of Ceremonies for the day is Grainne Ryan who as well as being a DJ on our very own Jet FM, is the former presenter of Baby on Board on RTE and is the healthcare expert on the Afternoon Show. This year, as last year, participants are asked to congregate at the Link Road past St Caimins School (not the road by the GAA Club) and the parade will start from the end of Sli na Mara and proceed up past the GAA and on to the Town Centre via the normal route. After the parade the festivities will carry on in the town centre and it will be a fun filled day for the whole family. If anyone would like to participate in the parade please contact Mike Fleming on 087 6140550 asap.

NEW ADORATION CHAPEL An Oratory has been in existence in Shannon since July 1976 where Mass has been celebrated and people pray daily. On 6th November 1996 Eucharistic Adoration began in the Oratory where, for 55 hours each week over 300 people commit themselves to an hour of prayer. In March 2004 the Oratory was temporarily relocated after the redevelopment of Shannon Town Centre. In the summer of 2007 construction began in the Town Square of the new Oratory, a standalone building. On 8th December 2009 Bishop Willie Walsh, Bishop of Killaloe, blessed and dedicated the Oratory as a sacred place for prayer and worship. Eurcharistic Adoration is the main ministry in the Oratory where parishioners, shoppers and visitors can call in for a moment’s prayer or a longer period of Adoration. As this Adoration Chapel begins a new chapter in its 33 year history, there is an appeal for more people to give an hour to prayer each week. The many hundreds who do so already find the experience of solitude and rest a blessing. If you would consider giving an hour please contact any of the Priests or one of the Adoration Co-ordinators, Mark McDonnell on 364592, Eddie Jones 472263, Kay Glody 362336, Seamus McEvoy 363048 or Tom Kearney 364504.

Michael O’ Keefe, a young man with a learning disability, took up employment with yum as a Kitchen Porter in October 09 and the feedback from the on-site manager is that Michael’s work is of an excellent standard. “When selecting candidates, we look for their ability to deliver better customer service because we know that when customers engage positively with the person serving their table or the chef preparing their meal, that same customer will return again and again”, Eoin says. “As our business grows we will be looking for Clare Supported Employment to help us fill more roles in other sites…. I would have no hesitation in recommending Clare Supported Employment to other employers”. 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Collection Day

M ARCH - APRIL 2 0 1 0

On Friday April 23rd we need thousands of people across the island of Ireland to help Special Olympics Ireland make their 2010 Collection Day the best yet. Collections will be held in every town and city across the country. We need collectors in shopping centres, bus stations, train stations, on the street and on the road. There is a place for you in this extraordinary team of generous people. Can you spare a few hours of your time to help collect on the streets in Co. Clare on the day? Your support will make a real difference to Special Olympics Ireland and will help to change the lives of people with an intellectual disability. Getting involved will also be a lot of fun with lots of activities planned around the country on the day. In June, Limerick city will play host to the 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games; 1,900 Special Olympics athletes will compete in one of 13 sports, they will be supported by 650 coaches and official delegates and cheered on by some 5000 family members and friends. 3,500 volunteers will be recruited in Limerick to run the Games and ensure that everyone has the time of their lives! Friday April 23rd is the most important day in Special Olympics Ireland fundraising calendar and we would like to thank people in advance for their generosity of time and continued support. To sign up or for further information please contact Sarah on 01 869 1608, email: sarah.joyce@ specialolympics. ie or visit: www. specialolympics.ie

INDIAN COMMUNITY - HAITI FUNDRAISING efforts The earthquake of January 12 devastated the country of Haiti. This devastating loss of life and disruption to the Haiti community was felt by the Indians living in the MidWest region of Ireland. Feeling that they had to respond in some way, the Indian Associations in the Mid-West (Munster Indian Cultural Assoc, based in Limerick & MidWest Indian Irish Assoc, based in Shannon) joined forces to raise funds amongst its community for the Red Cross Haiti appeal. In total these Indian Associations raised €3900 in the space of 2 weeks. This was gratefully received by the Limerick Red Cross office, who hope that other communities will be inspired to follow suit.
