Shannon Musical Society announce new show Shannon Musical Society is delighted to announce that “The Wedding Singer” will be the new show for the coming year 2010/2011. Based on the 1998 film of the same name starring Adam Sandler, the show contains all original songs….80’s style!! Nominated for a host of Tony awards when it opened on Broadway on April 2006, the musical has proven to be a huge hit with cast members and audiences alike! Similar in plot to the film (with some differences) here’s a brief synopsis of the show. “It’s 1985 and rock-star wannabe Robbie Heart, who still lives in his grandmother’s basement, is New Jersey’s favourite wedding singer. He’s the life of the party until his fianceé, Linda, leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. When he meets Julia, an admiring young waitress, Robbie falls madly in love. Only trouble is Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can

pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever. With a score that pays loving homage to the pop songs of the 1980s, The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room.” So it’s the same old “Boy loses Girls, Boy meets Girls, Boy fights for Girl, Boy wins Girl” story….you can’t beat it! Even more exciting is the news that this year’s producer is none other than our very own Aodán Fox. The committee is delighted that he has agreed to produce Shannon this year, and wishes him the very best. No doubt he will do the society proud.

SHANNON REGION TALKING NEWSPAPER The Talking Newspaper are looking for volunteers to help read the news onto tape for visually impaired and blind people. It is a very small committment (only once a month for maxiumum 2 hours) and is greatly appreciated by the people who receive tapes every week. If you can spare some time to help out, please call Mary Casey on 087 2325930.

Shannon Town have had a terrific season with their junior side achieving a league and cup double, in the process winning promotion to the Limerick Premier League which is considered one of the toughest leagues in the country. They also won the Division 1A Cup beating Summerville Rovers 2-1 (a scoreline which didn’t reflect their domination of the game) in the final, a thrilling game which was played at Jackman Park on May the 19th last. The Club are very proud of this achievement which cements our position as Shannon’s strongest soccer club. We would like to thank all our players and trainers for all their input over the last year. It was a long, hard, tough season with at least 120 training sessions that ended in success, thanks to the hugh dedication of players and management, with sometimes up to four training sessions per week. A special thanks goes to all the parents for driving their kids to and from games, for which the club values you very highly. We are looking forward to next seasons challenge where we will have to work even harder to maintain the same pace and build on this seasons achievements. You can get all the latest news about Shannon Town on our website www.shannontownunitedafc.com.

Local Shannon residents may have been wondering about the activity at the ex Tom Hogan premises in the last few weeks. Atlantic AirVenture Aviation Centre has now opened at this landmark site. Among the first visitors have been school tours and over 600 primary school students will have visited the centre this June. Teachers have been delighted with the programme as lessons link to the primary science curriculum and there’s plenty of flying fun included. This will be the third year that ACE Camp is running, a very popular choice for those budding pilots out there and for those who want something different . Camps are designed to be educational as well as fun with plenty of flying and a big treat at the end of the week - all ACE Aviators get the chance to fly an approach and landing to Shannon Airport in the Boeing 737 Flight Simulator. This simulator is the only one of its kind operating in the country and is used by training pilots. Yet to come, later this Summer will be the launch of Atlantic AirVenture Shannon Aviation Visitor Centre. And the weekend of August 28/29 is planned for an Aviation Exhibition Weekend, more details will be available shortly.

Jackie Hodges “Absolutely brilliant party. Fantastic value for money. Would recommend HT Promotions to all my friends, and we will be having another party there in January.”

Linda Lennane “We were very pleased with the venue. The set up was perfect, especially as it was a wet day. All the staff worked hard and were very helpful”

Rosie O’Neill “It was great. We had a fantastic day. Plenty of space for all the kids. Also plenty of variety for the two hours. Mike, Eileen and staff did a great job.” Cathy Keane Bridges “Had my sons birthday party here. It was brilliant. Us adults just sat back and let Eileen and the gang do all the work. Well worth the visit here.”

Karen Smyth (Mum) “Very happy with the service. I found it great value for money. All I had to do was set up the food table while the staff of HT Promotions took care of the entertainment. It took away all of the stress birthdays usually bring.” Jennifer Smyth age 7 “ I want to go there again, and again and again.” Jessica Smyth age 6 “I loved the music and the dancing.”

Sheena (Mum) and Joe (Dad) “Excellent facility. Every age of child catered for. Each party is set up with the birthday child’s interests taken into accout. We have had three very different but successful party’s there. Danny 12 had his Sumo wrestling, Jasmin 10 had her goth/metal music disco and Zoe 8 had a girly castle and disco. They loved it. Mike and Eileen looked after it all. And Fran was great at the facepainting, as usual.” Mary Lundy “Rosemary thoroughly enjoyed her birthday party. Services provided were fantastic. Great venue and great value for money”

ST SENANS RFC SEASON ROUNDUP The clubs biggest disappointment this year was in finishing bottom of their division, despite this the club will hold on to 1st division status, as the league have now increased the size of each division to 14 teams. As the team face into a new season they will do so with new a new coach as Pa Slattery is stepping down from the position after more than 10 years. At the recent AGM the club president, Mary Lillis, paid tribute to Pa for his commitment and dedication to the club and presented him with a memento to mark his achievements. Pa served the club well and nurtured a lot of good local talent, and left a good rugby legacy within the club for anyone replacing him to build upon. The underage section of the club had another busy season with teams at under 8’s, 9’s, 10’s, 11’s and 12’s all competing on a regular basis. In addition to these the youths section has teams competing and being coached at under 14’s, 15’s, 16’s and 18’s level. These teams are coached on a weekly basis, by a dedicated group of people, this is very important to the over all development of the club. The highlight of the season for the youths was when the under 16’s travelled to Wales to take place in a rugby competition, to compete against teams from England, Scotland and Wales. Conceding just 4 scores in the 5 games they ran out as overall winners. Funding for this trip was raised by the players with bag packs in Dunnes Stores Shannon, for which they wish to thank the public for their generosity during these days. The club would also like to acknowledge the generosity of local butcher John Quinn from Ballycasey who sponsored the team jersey. The underage section also held the 4th running of the Garda Cup competition at Jimmy Slattery Park. This involved teams from 8 local rugby clubs, at under-14 level, and was a good showcase of rugby at this level. St Caimin’s and St Patricks Comprehensive schools participated in the school cup. The Junior shield was won by St Caimin’s; the Senior Cup was shared by both schools as their match ended as a draw. The club would like to take this opportunity to thank its sponsors and the people in Shannon and surrounding areas for their valued support over the past season and looks forward to welcoming you all back to Jimmy Slattery Park next season.

Centrestage Summer Camps Gospel choir update Some of last years performers

in ‘Grease’

Centrestage Summer Camps are the biggest and most successful in Ireland with participants travelling from Spain, France, the UK and all over Ireland. The Summer Camps which are now in their 14th year, provide every individual child the chance to develop character and confidence, learn valuable life skills, make new friends and discover new interests in a safe environment, and most of all have FUN! The camps offer the opportunity to students to spend time in the many disciplines of the performing arts in ‘Danny Zuko’ and the magnificent University Cr eative Directo Richie Ryanr/Producer of Limerick Campus. For more information or to book your place see page 2 or www. centrestageireland.com or call 061 353716 or 085 1940926.

Shannon Gospel Choir was delighted to be part of the very first Gospel Festival to be held in Ireland. A huge number of choirs from around Ireland made their way to Ennis in May for a series of workshops delivered by members of the London Community Gospel Choir, a showcase gig in Glor, and mass celebration in local churches finishing off with a mini-gig & workshop from Jack Lukeman. This came only two weeks after SGC had their own, very successful headline gig in Dolans Warehouse. Huge credit must be given to the organising committee for the Gospel Rising festival (featured on RTE’s Nationwide), which kept everyone busy and buzzing for the weekend. SGC were delighted to be asked to sing at the Glor gig on Saturday and gave a set that had all the audience bopping, clapping and stomping. John Crofton from DGC guested on drums. There was a great mix of choirs performing at the gig, showing the diverse range of choirs and styles of music that exist amongst Irish Gospel choirs, including Ennis, Maynooth & Celbridge, Valley Singers & Ballymun.
