Signature Restaurant at La Cantera Resort hosted Teddy Bear Brunch, kicking off Children’s Grief Awareness Month in November to bring the community together in support of grieving children and families. righton Center’s annual event, Best Night Ever, was wildly successful. Co-chairs Stephanie and Chris Wilde ensured over 400 guests were treated to a festive evening in support of Brighton’s mission: providing the right help at the right time to children of all abilities and empowering them to discover new possibilities.

Brighton Center is the largest nonprofit providing pediatric therapy services and inclusive education to children with disabilities and developmental delays in San Antonio.

Guests sipped cocktails, mingled, and placed bids as they enjoyed music outdoors before moving inside the Witte Museum for dinner and the program, followed by a fast-paced live auction filled with trips to Aspen and Breckenridge in Colorado, as well as local Texas getaways in Port Aransas and Fredericksburg. Desserts and afterparty festivities continued outdoors where guests “got a little wild,” playing to the evening’s theme. ■ ...................................

A REALLY GREEN HOUSE

CONSERVATIONISM IN PRACTICE

G

reenhouses nurture plants—and so does Alan Montemayor, the owner of a local “green” house, who nurtures his many drought-resistant plants and shrubs with collected rainwater. Energy from sunlight that beats down with Texas-level intensity is stored in solar panels on his roof, powering his home and EV cars, while rain stored in large, shiny tanks nourishes his vegetable garden.

Montemayor, retired engineer and Chairman of the Alamo Group of the Sierra Club, has transformed his Northside home into a “green” house, a place so energy-efficient, his electric bill runs as low as $19 a month.

The civic-minded civic leader has given tours of his house to select guests. Groups of 20 to 90 visitors at a time have learned how to make their own home energy-efficient and ecologically friendly, too. Montemayor shared with Scene In SA how he transformed his Castle Hills home to reduce consumption.

Nature in Mind

His front yard is a prime example of xeriscaping, a lowmaintenance landscaping solution emphasizing water conservation through, for example, the use of drought-tolerant plants.

“When we started in 1991, we planted a variety of plants. Some of them made it through the summer, some didn’t. What you see here is the distillation of what works well in this area,” Montemayor explains. “We have signs in front of most of the plants so that people who walk by, if they see a plant they really like … [or] want for their yard and wonder what it is, they can immediately identify it and go to their nurseryman and ask for Red Autumn Sage.”

Montemayor has taken a very methodical, ecology-forward approach to his garden. It is only natural that Montemayor is head of the local Sierra Club, an environmental organization founded by “Father of the National Parks” John Muir, a prominent American preservationist, naturalist, botanist, and zoologist.

Xeriscaping has been found to improve local biodiversity by providing native vegetation for insects and wildlife.

“Every plant is planted for bees, butterflies, bats, and pollinators.

“We create a food source and refuge that animals have adapted to over the millennia. A healthy ecosystem is healthy for humans; plants that act as food sources for insects, bugs, butterflies [are] the basis for the food chain.”

Rainwater, A Valuable Liquid Asset

Xeriscaped yards still need water, and Montemayor is ruthless about collecting rainwater with his sophisticated water-saving system, to feed his shrubbery and vegetable garden.

Montemayor’s gutters are enclosed with fine-mesh screens that direct rainwater straight into the storage tanks without splashing. Hoses at the ends of some gutters drain directly underground, watering the roots of his plants, reducing urban runoff, and recharging groundwater.

COST SAVINGS: REDUCED 2023 WATER BILL TO $29 PER MONTH. “This system does not reduce household water use,” he says.

“However, it fully supports the garden and landscaping, which reduces [our] monthly water bill. In San Antonio, 55% of water is used outdoors.” According to one study, households in arid states like Arizona showed 75% of their potable water usage was dedicated to watering residential and urban lawns.

Examining his drying bald-cypress, Montemayor explains: “We are in the middle of a climate change. We have drier conditions, less rain, and more days over 100°F. San Antonio has always been a semi-arid area. We all have to do what we can to cut back on water consumption, or we will run out of fresh water.”

Meteorologists report an emerging La Niña may bring “warmer-than-average temperatures” to the South and “potential drought conditions across the southern U.S.” this winter, expected to persist from January to March 2025.

Further, water resources face large-scale commodification, with creeping efforts to privatize it.

Nestlé SA, owner of water brands Pure Life, Perrier, San Pellegrino, and Acqua Panna, announced to its shareholders in November 2024 that its growth plan included separating its water business into a global standalone business beginning this year. Spring water bottlers, including Nestlé, have been accused of buying up water rights and depleting natural water resources and aquifers for profit.

more power than they consume. “Essentially, we’ve driven two electric vehicles for free in the last four years.” The panels effectively paid for themselves in two years.

Harvesting rainwater seems a natural step to prepare for a future threatened by scarcity.

Recognizing the cost-prohibitive nature of full-on xeriscaping, rainwater harvesting, and solar panels, Montemayor offered a few insights to reduce your energy usage (and bills!): “Install insulation in the attic, in the walls. Put in new doors and windows that are energyefficient. Consider energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs. Consider smart thermostats, ceiling fans.”

Cutting Bills and Consumption

In his backyard, Montemayor has eleven raised vegetable beds, producing cost-free, pesticide-free produce like lettuce, spinach, radishes, and herbs. These 6-feet by 3-feet galvanized steel raised garden beds cost him about $500.

“You make a salad out of this and you go, ‘Wow!’” he says.

Homegrown produce has real taste, and saves on the food bill.

Montemayor’s compost bin is full of leaves and decomposing food scraps fertilizing his plants and vegetables. It attracts animals, but the environmentalist in him says that’s okay. His towering live oaks grow wild—the branches are home to birds, squirrels, and foxes. “We absolutely love the ecosystem taking off. The fox, the raccoon, the skunk, possum, squirrels come, like a feeding station.”

In addition to cutting food costs, Montemayor has seen savings on other bills. His ten solar panels can generate

Montemayor aims to convert his last three gas appliances—a water heater, clothes dryer, and furnace— to heat pump electric systems. Their home will then be powered mostly by the sun, reducing their reliance on the grid.

Montemayor recounted he was able to reduce his summer electric bills significantly, citing that he (very understandably) does not enjoy shelling out money to public utility companies. “We have a love-hate relationship,” he says. For example: “SAWS makes their money from the water volume sold. If everyone did this, San Antonio would need a tenth of the water that we are currently using.” Montemayor is an ambassador of underconsumption.

An engaged community leader, Montemayor has even knocked on the doors of HEB’s corporate offices, seeking a stronger environmental commitment. “One thing the Alamo Group of the Sierra Club does [is] we lobby for more sustainable energy and water policy for the city.

This house is really a demonstration of how we can live lighter, in all aspects, on the environment.” ■

THE INNER WORLDS OF TEXAS ARTISTS

T

he shock of the surrealist movement has worn off since its emergence in 1924, but surrealist impulses still seen in advertising, design, literature, film—indeed, all the visual arts—can jar us out of staid reality. Emphasizing the roles of dreams, the subconscious, and chance, Surrealism is perhaps best known through the otherworldly, enigmatic paintings of Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Leonora Carrington, and perhaps even the ubiquitous Frida Kahlo. (Kahlo disputed the label, declaring that she painted her own reality.) Their art and the underlying impulses continue to inspire and drive like-minded artists around the world, including right here in Texas, where the stereotypes—if they were ever true—no longer apply.

The Art of Dreams, Visions, Other Worlds: Interviews with Texas Artists, my second book from Texas A&M University Press, was published on December 11, 2024, just in time for the centennial of Surrealism. Inspired as much by a lifelong fascination with dreams as with my penchant for surrealism, the book features interviews with 59 Texas artists between the years 2018 to 2020, each accompanied by a striking, full-page image. The illustrated introduction introduces earlier Texas artists enamored of the title themes, while an extensive list of sources and further reading invites extended explorations.

Most interviewees would not describe themselves as

surrealists, but all have been inspired by one or more of the related title themes.

For Scene In SA, I focus on artists who call—or once called—San Antonio home. The artists mentioned in the introduction, the late Bill Reily, Amy Freeman Lee, Forrest Bess, Linda Pace, and Jim Harter were all inspired by dreams, visions, or imagined worlds. Longtime professor of art at University of the Incarnate Word, Reily shared his reflections on local surrealists with me before his passing, including his high estimation of Lee’s influence on art in San Antonio. Lee participated in more than a thousand exhibitions; one important series recreated her hypnagogic visions, experienced on the cusp of sleep and wakefulness. Such visions also drove the most celebrated paintings of Bess. Artist, collector, and philanthropist Linda Pace’s museum Ruby City, showcasing her art collection, was inspired by a dream. Harter is likely best known for his collections of 19th-century engravings for Dover Books that also populated his own mystical and surreal collages.

Ward Sanders, a longtime resident of nearby Lytle—and an interviewee of my book and good friend—hails from San Antonio. His medium is perhaps best described as poetic assemblages of found objects. from Houston to San Antonio in 2011. Describing himself as a “materialist poet,” his media ranges from ingenious assemblages and transformations of found materials to film.

Sanders and Robleto were among the 65 interviewees for my first book, The Art of Found Objects: Interviews with Texas Artists (Texas A&M University Press, 2016), to which my new book serves as a companion. In most cases, the artists composed thoughtful and thought-provoking answers to my emailed, individualized questions—usually after a studio visit. Some, like Houstonians Dario Robleto and Trenton Doyle Hancock, did phone interviews, subsequently transcribed and edited.

Others sat for recorded interviews in their home studios.

Susan Dunis—another good friend, now in Wimberley—had a home and studio in San Antonio when I first visited. An outstanding tilemaker, she has returned to her first love, painting. Lisette Chavez, in San Antonio at the time I visited her home studio, works in media from drawing to sculptural and found-object installations. Other San Antonio artists featured in my book on found objects are Danville Chadbourne, Mimi Kato, Marilyn Lanfear, Ken Little, Kelly O’Connor, Henry Stein, and Gary Sweeney.

Moving through local contemporary art from found objects into surrealism, The Art of Dreams, Visions, Other Worlds has, to my profound delight, finally emerged from a long gestation.

Artists Albert Alvarez, Conan Chadbourne, James Cobb, Jayne Lawrence, Juan de Dios Mora, Daniel Rios Rodriguez, James Smolleck, and Hiromi Stringer remain, to the best of my knowledge, firmly rooted in San Antonio. The reflections that follow incorporate excerpts from some of these interviews, where Alvarez, Chadbourne, and Stringer explain the worlds of their art in their own words.

Albert Alvarez first entered my consciousness with a bang around 2014, when I bought a small, surreal painting from him during the On and Off Fred Studio Tour. In 2019, he described: “My fear of aliens probably started around 1989. I saw the movie Communion with Christopher Walken. For a long time, images of bug-eyed aliens taking you against your will in the middle of the night resonated with me. That movie put the fear of aliens in me. I’ve learned so much about aliens since then that I now think I want to be abducted. I would be a fine specimen to examine.” While some of his art involves such scenarios, it is at least as likely to imagine unsettling domestic scenes or to reveal his social consciousness.

Conan Chadbourne creates prints that explore aspects of mathematics. “Sometimes, when I’m working on a particular problem or spending a lot of time trying to understand a concept, those ideas will show up in dreams, sometimes in unusual ways. When I was in school, this usually manifested itself as certain mathematical concepts showing up in my dreams.” He added: “I do sometimes dream about solutions to problems, 22

either mathematical or design related, that I’m working on. Usually, I don’t actually wake up with a solution, but remember being sure that I had found a solution in the dream. Sometimes though, they do provide some new insight into the problem or motivate me to start looking at it again in a different way.” A math and physics major at New York University, he probably inherited the art gene from his sculptor father, Danville Chadbourne.

Hiromi Stringer first grabbed my attention several years ago with a tour de force exhibition at the University of Texas at San Antonio Arts (formerly Southwest School of Art) involving a 19th-century time traveler from Japan who finds himself transported to and trying to interpret contemporary Texas.

Her work has more recently involved the dreams of her dog, Altin, and a later, knockout dog-centric exhibition at Blue Star Contemporary. “How wonderful it would be if you could peek into a dog’s dream! I once read that dreams reflect past experiences, knowledge, and memory. I think that dog dreams are beyond human imagination. Just considering the possibilities stirs my curiosity, and I can create unspoiled territories in my head, like some wondrous hidden retreat.”

Nevertheless, she added later, “I still think, even at this time in my life, that if it were possible, I would be thrilled to see what it’s like to be a cat.”

The Art of Dreams, Visions, Other Worlds introduces readers to the state’s surrealist art not only visually, but in the artists’ own voices. A peek inside the minds of almost 60 Texas artists, the book is an out-of-this-world documentation of living art history. ■

An Astrological Look Ahead at 2025

A

strology undoubtedly has many facets and layers, which may hinder one’s desire to pursue its wisdom. After all, the starry sky has been gazed upon for thousands of years by myriad cultures around the globe. Countless systems, stories, and significations are woven together to create this complex tapestry.

After studying it for nearly two decades, I consider myself well-versed in Western astrology—natal, current, event, predictive, psychological, signs and their meanings, house systems, asteroid goddesses, dignities, triplicities, nodes, planets, moon phases, eclipses, et cetera. Even then, I’ve barely covered the tip of the empyreal iceberg. While there is much to understand when we look up at the skies, I wish to enlighten you on the differences between sidereal and tropical astrology, provide insight on 2025’s first quarter including important transits and lunar cycles, and describe how best to harmonize with the upcoming astroweather.

SIDEREAL AND TROPICAL ASTROLOGY Nearly 2,000 years ago, ancient Greek gods, goddesses, myths, and legends were immortalized by the shaping of constellations and naming the five large stars that wandered across the firmament. (Fun fact: the word “planet” comes from the Greek word planetes which means “wanderer.”)

Back then, astrology and astronomy were one and the same practice that primarily focused on timing and navigation. By tracking patterns in the sky, astrologers predicted seasons, events, and harvests, and generally helped keep civilization ticking in an orderly manner.

For example, the Sun’s movement into the sign of the ram marked the vernal equinox, the beginning of the zodiacal calendar. The latitudinal tropics of Cancer and Capricorn were instrumental in this calculation, so the practice became known as tropical astrology. Each solstice and equinox was confirmed by the Sun’s ingress, or shift, into one of the cardinal signs. Spring corresponded with Aries, summer with Cancer, autumn with Libra, and winter with Capricorn. Though some of their theories were proven to be incorrect (e.g. geocentrism), the ancient Greeks contributed

a rock-solid foundation to the study of astrology that we know today.

Unfortunately, aligning the earth’s seasonal cycles with the zodiac did not account for a crucial piece of information moving into the future: axial precession. You know how a top wobbles while it’s spinning? Well, the Earth does that, too.

Our planet’s orientation on its axis changes by 1° every 71.6 years; Since the dawn of the Common Era, the constellations in our sky have shifted nearly 30°. Basically, what you need to know is: tropical astrology highlights seasonal changes in lieu of tracking the actual positions of the constellations. The system that accounts for this wobble and accurately depicts the arrangement of stars is called sidereal astrology.

Whereas Western astrologers by and large practice tropical astrology, jyotishas (Vedic astrologers) would use sidereal astrology to draw up your birth chart. A Western chart is most often circular and cut into 12 slices called Houses, but a Vedic chart is a square-like grid and has unique names and meanings for the planets due to separate belief systems.

Vedic astrology also boasts 16 distinct divisional charts per person, each a window that represents just one glimpse at the miraculous puzzle that is you. There are other key differences as well, such as the centering of lunar mansions and nodes in Jyotish. The long-lived “science of light” from India hinges on the precise placement of planets against the backdrop of constellations, so you’ll likely see some visible differences between your tropical and sidereal charts.

You might be wondering how this discrepancy affects you.

Has your Sun sign been a lie your whole life because it’s almost 30° off? Not exactly. While I highly recommend taking a peek at your sidereal chart, the tropical one is still equally valuable as a tool to further your own self-understanding.

Both practices have a long history of observers and both act as divine tools to glean information about your strengths, weaknesses, motivations, natural talents, and key areas in your life. Especially if you’re skeptical about the “accuracy” of Western astrology, my hope is that you’ll be intrigued enough to learn more about your sidereal chart. History lesson aside, it’s time to shift gears and focus on the astroweather for the beginning of the 2025 calendar year.

A LOOK AHEAD Coloring the end of 2024 is Venus – the benefic goddess of beauty, love, and the arts – entering the sign of Aquarius, resolving her vicious stand-off with opposing Mars in Cancer. This should provide some relief to our wallets, emotions, and relationships. Venus joins her friend Saturn in his home of the mystical water bearer. When two planets are in the same House, we call this aspect a conjunction. Their energies fuse and blend, resulting in a powerful new main character. Together, they emphasize defending boundaries and reinforcing self-love rituals. Expect icky power dynamics to shift, compassion fatigue to wane, and for the collective to use its voice loudly.

Adding “hopeful” and “fortuitous” to the mix is one last new moon on December 30, 2024 in the sign of the archer, Sagittarius. Ruled by the planet Jupiter, this fire sign is actively broadening its horizons and exuberantly open to new possibilities. My professional recommendation is to use this time at the end of the year to reflect on how much more accomplished you feel compared to January 2024. Be inspired

by Sagittarius’s secret superpower of manifestation and hold true to your vision. Adjust your aim accordingly. Don’t budge on your personal or professional goals. You can absolutely get what you’ve been daydreaming about.

The full moon in Gemini on January 13, 2025 is sitting opposite from a lot of major players: the Sun, Ceres, Pluto, Pallas Athene, and Mercury. Fair warning: this time may have you feeling emotionally vulnerable. By nature, full moons are always opposing the Sun, but this configuration nonetheless spotlights an interesting emotional vibration: our daily needs and habits may be pulling us away from healthy relating. Especially in our committed partnerships, many of us end up parentifying ourselves, even if it’s not what we intended. This harmful pattern becomes increasingly evident with this lunation, and we would be wise to heed these rumblings. Wisdom is a hard-won, organic culmination of our experiences, and you don’t owe other people access to it. Try to put down what you were taught about being in a relationship by your role models and allow your perspective

to transform. You are not a summary of all the people you know. You are not your creative intelligence. You are not what you bring to the table. You are worthy and deserving of love because you are alive.

The start of 2025 has a few other major occurrences worth diving into: the first of which is the Venus–North Node union in Pisces that starts on January 28 and lasts for 110 days until May 18. I love this moment. It feels very “yes, diva!” I sense Goddess consciousness singing Her songs on repeat to help the collective redefine our values in relationships. Exalted in the sign of Pisces, Venus encourages us to pursue what makes us truly happy. There’s also a potent Sun–Moon– Mercury conjunction in Capricorn on the same day! Could it be an omen of favorable rules and policies? Or maybe it’s indicative of finding better ways to communicate discomfort and combat disconnection?

On February 12 during the full moon, a conjunction occurs in the sign of Aquarius between the Sun, Saturn, and Mercury, with Luna joining in a couple weeks when she’s new again. I get the sense that this means all the people playing “catchup” are in for dramatic awakenings. Here comes spicy selfassertion. I strongly advise using every graceful diplomatic move in the playbook and delivering any heavy or big news extraordinarily carefully. Reinforce boundaries firmly, but with a healthy amount of respect for other people’s feelings.

Mars stations direct in Gemini on February 24, empowering intellectual action. Mercury moves into Pisces on the 27th, allowing us to more easily flow with our intuition. The day after the full moon on March 13, there is another sizable conjunction between the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and the North Node, all in Pisces. ■ .....................................................

It's a small world and getting smaller by the day, judging by the growing number of shrinking celebrities admittedly jumping aboard the Ozempic train. They aren’t the only ones going full steam ahead. Millions of people have turned to Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy, or one of the other glucagonlike peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications to shed unwanted pounds. Designed for managing blood sugar in type 2 diabetics, these medications quickly surged in popularity for their appetite-suppressant qualities. Prescriptions have risen among pre- and even non-diabetics looking for a way to manage their weight.

However, as with anything that promises an easy solution to weight loss, nothing is as simple as it seems. There are several considerations when it comes to taking GLP-1 drugs, especially without an underlying condition, a significant amount of weight to lose, or doctor supervision. Side effects and high costs can outweigh the benefits for some people, while others might be willing to endure a few inconveniences for a shot at a slimmer way of life.

How It Works

According to Sarah Evans, a nurse practitioner in charge of the weight loss management program at Nova Aesthetics, GLP-1 medications influence hunger hormones to decrease hunger pangs and increase feelings of fullness.

In other words, patients on the drugs eat less and still feel satisfied.

“GLP-1 medications make it easier for individuals to adhere to healthier eating habits without feeling deprived or overly hungry,” she explained, adding that the drugs also work to slow the digestive process. “This slower digestion helps keep blood sugar levels stable, preventing the rapid spikes and crashes that often lead to cravings or overeating,” According to Evans, patients can expect to steadily and gradually lose approximately 5%–10% of their body weight over six months, with potentially more significant losses occurring after one year. For people like wardrobe stylist Jules Aldaz, who has struggled with her weight for years, it's easy to see why these drugs might look like the long-awaited answer to their prayers.

Aldaz has had a lifelong battle with her weight, fluctuating up and down before topping out at 200 pounds on her 5'1" frame. Pre-diabetic and with high blood pressure, the 55-year-old mother of two decided to try Mounjaro at the suggestion of her physician, Tamyra Rogers, MD. "It worked great. I lost seven pounds in the first month," she said.

Now, two years later, Aldaz is 80 pounds lighter. But more than just weight, she has lost her pre-diabetic status and is completely off of her blood pressure medication. Those losses equate to a big win overall.

Weighing the Side Effects

While Aldaz has been happy with her results, there were challenges along the way – some she still lives with.

Much has been shared about the potential side effects of GLP-1 medications, specifically moderate to severe gastrointestinal issues. These issues can disrupt a patient's lifestyle or even affect the quality of it.

“The most common side effects of GLP-1 drugs include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation, especially at the start of treatment,” said Evans. “Those side effects can often be minimized by gradually increasing the dosage and staying at the lowest effective dosage.” Of course, individuals should always consult a doctor or qualified health professional before beginning any new medication or changing dosing or treatments.

For Aldaz, however, the symptoms did not subside.

“It’s not for the weak,” she said. Admitting that although some of the side effects subsided after a day or two, she experienced constant nausea and indigestion while on Mounjaro. "I took it once a week and was nauseous for two days after, with day two being the worst," she recalled.

There is also the risk of hypoglycemia, especially in diabetic patients who are on additional drugs to help lower glucose levels. A local diabetic woman who asked to be identified as L.Z. said that she often felt like her blood pressure was bottoming out while on Ozempic. "I felt dehydrated and dizzy," she described. Coupled with the fact that she didn't experience a significant reduction of appetite, only lost five pounds, and eventually had to have surgery for a ruptured gallbladder, L.Z. elected to discontinue the drug and switched to Mounjaro.

“I am feeling much better and have been able to change my eating habits since switching,” she said. “Personally, I would not recommend Ozempic.”

Interestingly, one of the most talked-about side effects of GLP-1 drugs – loss of muscle mass – may not be directly related to their use.

“Muscle loss itself isn’t directly caused by GLP-1 medications,” explained Evans. “Rather, it can result from losing weight too quickly, which can happen with any aggressive weight-loss program.”

To combat that issue, Evans recommends that patients incorporate strength training and focus on adding adequate protein to their diet, using the lowest effective dose of the medication to keep the weight coming off consistently, rather than at an excessive rate.

It is imperative that patients communicate with their physicians to ensure the medication and dosage are correct for their particular body type and needs. As L.Z. discovered, everyone's experience is different, and the medication that works for one person may not work as well for another. That's why Evans recommends compounded formulas.

“Compounding allows for customization to meet individual needs, such as adjusting dosage or combining ingredients,” she explained.

effective. That was the case for Aldaz, who had to switch to the compounded tirzepatide. “My insurance stopped covering Mounjaro because I was no longer considered pre-diabetic,” she said.

There’s No Magic Bullet

There is no denying that GLP-1 drugs are beneficial for helping stabilize blood sugar in people with diabetes. It is also a fact that weight loss can improve blood pressure and cardiovascular health. However, these drugs are not magic bullets and should not be considered substitutes for healthy lifestyle changes.

“They are most effective when used as part of a comprehensive lifestyle plan that includes a balanced diet and exercise,” said Evans. "They are not intended as a quick fix, as they support sustainable weight loss rather than rapid, shortterm results.”

Dr. Monica Anz-Cavazos, Clinical Director of Sage Bariatric Institute in San Antonio, agreed.

“These drugs are just one element of many that are needed to lose weight in a healthy way,” she said. “They help you eat less, but without dietary education and changes, they can do more harm than good.” Especially in terms of pre-diabetics, GLP-1 drugs shouldn't always be the first line of defense, as the same outcomes may be achieved by lifestyle intervention or different medications.

Dr. Anz-Cavazos underscored the importance of eating well in the face of eating less. “Our bodies cannot function healthfully without proper nutrition — we end up with vitamin and mineral deficiencies, chronic inflammation, and disease.

more important to be eating highly nutritious foods such as vegetables and lean proteins.”

Aldaz said that she recognizes that her medication is something to use in conjunction with—not instead of—a healthy lifestyle. "It is not a miracle worker," she advised. "You have to put in the effort and be very disciplined."

Without putting in the work to establish healthy habits, there is the very real possibility that the weight will return if and when a patient discontinues the use of the GLP-1 medication.

“Some patients may experience a return of appetite, which could lead to weight regain if not managed,” cautioned Evans.

One Size Does Not Fit All

For someone like Aldaz, who had tried for years to manage her weight through diet and exercise to no avail, GLP-1 medications have been life-changing and, in her opinion, worth the side effects. To those who suggest that the medication is a crutch, she is quick to point out that she exercised and followed a strict, physician-monitored diet and still couldn't get the scale to move. "I needed the shots because nothing else I'd done was working," she said. "I wanted to be healthy for my daughters.”

According to Evans, GLP-1 medications are typically only prescribed to patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, or a BMI of 27 or higher with an associated medical condition like hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or sleep apnea. It may not be the best option for those who want to use it simply to knock off five or ten pesky pounds.

But they also laid out some serious caveats.

• Always consult with a qualified healthcare professional before starting, stopping, or altering any medication. Prescription drugs should only be taken as directed by a licensed physician or healthcare provider.

• Regular lab work will help make sure GLP-1 therapy is safe and effective for you. Get your labs checked periodically to monitor metabolic markers like calcitonin (a marker for cancer), pancreatic enzymes, and renal function to detect early signs of drug-induced kidney stress.

Dr. Monica Anz-Cavazos and Dr. Frank Kuwamura explain GLP-1 agonist drugs help decrease appetite and lower gastric emptying time, which helps patients eat less.

• Weigh the risks. These drugs may cause unwanted or serious side effects, like pancreatitis or medullary thyroid cancer, especially in patients with a family history of certain diseases. Nausea associated with GLP-1 therapy can lead to dehydration.

• Diet and lifestyle changes are necessary. Proper protein intake, exercise, and activity are necessary to maintain muscle mass. A loss of muscle mass can result in a lowered resting metabolic rate, making it harder to lose weight down the road.

• GLP-1 medications are not appropriately indicated for patients with more severe obesity. Bariatric surgery is typically the standard care option for weight management In patients with a 40+ BMI (or even 35+ BMI combined with metabolic or chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension).

"These medications are generally reserved for those with more significant weight management needs due to the potential side effects and cost," she explained.

They are also generally reserved for adults. Although childhood obesity and early-onset diabetes among adolescents are on the rise, Evans says that prescribing GLP-1 medications to minors, though approved by the FDA for a select group of younger patients, needs to be carefully regulated.

"There should be a thorough evaluation and collaboration between a child's pediatrician and endocrinologist to ensure that the benefits outweigh any risks, as children's developmental needs differ from those of adults," she said. "Ultimately, it should rely on the outcomes of rigorous studies, FDA review, and doctors' input to set appropriate guidelines.”

The future of GLP-1 drugs for children remains to be seen. Still, for adults like Aldaz, these medications can provide either a short-term jump start or a long-term solution, depending on the patient’s needs.

"I will probably be on it for the rest of my life, just at a lower dose and a longer period between injections," she said. "Everyone's journey is different, but if I had it to do over, I'd do it again in a minute. For me, it has been 100 percent worth it." ■ ..................................................................................................

he historic Charline McCombs Empire Theatre’s gilded stage hosted the inaugural Celestial Awards, an elegant celebration of the many talents and contributions of Texan women across the media and entertainment industries.

The ceremony was presented by Women In Film & Television San Antonio (WIFT SATX), an organization working to better platform and increase parity for women in media both in San Antonio and the greater South Texas region.

Jaselyn BlanchardPace, effervescent executive director of the Majestic Empire Foundation, was presented with the “Jocelyn” award, named after Jocelyn “Joci” Straus, for excellence in overall producing. RK Group founder Rosemary Kowalski (pictured bottom left), who celebrated her 100th birthday in September, presented the “Rosemary” award to Diana Barrios Treviño of San Antonio Mexican food restaurant royalty Los Barrios for excellence in culinary arts and hospitality.

Host Nicholas Gonzalez, of The Good Doctor and La Brea fame, guided the audience through an evening full of music, singing, dancing, and some well-earned applause.

Opening the awards was a scene about Clara Bow’s experience with Wings, a 1927 film shot here in San Antonio, and the winner of the first Academy Award for Best Picture. The piece, performed with aplomb by the Joci Award performers, highlighted the shamefully-large discrepancy between men and women’s pay in Hollywood, and served as an energetic introduction.

The evening’s honors were further punctuated by the instrumental stylings of YOSA (Youth Orchestras of San Antonio) and the vibrant colors and dynamic moves of Fiesta Noche del Rio’s dancers, among many others.

Featuring awards like the “Carol” (for legendary excellence and women’s advocacy, named after trailblazing San Antonian

Chartered in November 2023, the official San Antonio chapter of WIFT celebrated its first birthday at the Celestial Awards, and is ready to hit the ground running. “Direct indexing has been around for decades, but previously, it was only available to ultra-high net worth or institutional investors. Now, it's broadly available to everyone, and there's essentially four key benefits for direct indexing that I really want to illustrate.

What features make a particular savings account more attractive than another?

“If we're looking at, let's say a savings account or a checking account, outside of what the APY would be for the account, let's take a look at the fees.That's something we could very easily manage. Are there monthly services, overdraft fees, foreign transaction fees? Are you getting ATM fee rebates for cash withdrawals when using a different bank's ATM? Are there any kind of security guarantees if anything were to happen?”

What financial instruments offer the best return on investment (ROI), and how can that change depending on somebody's savings goals?

“I know that when investing, a lot of people like to focus on how much they can make, and not really think about whether they can afford to lose, and that's risk capacity.

The way that we like to approach it is: always start by establishing a financial plan.

By putting together a plan, you can visually see your goals and illustrate factors like time and risk tolerance that we can reverse engineer to say, ‘This is what we're

What are some useful financial instruments?

When we're thinking about direct indexing, it's not like you're owning a share of the index or a share of the fund of the index—you own the individual stocks that make up the index. Being able to see the individual holdings within the actual index [gives the] advantage [of] transparency.

Another benefit is you can customize it. Let's say that you don't want to have exposure to a particular sector or a particular industry; the tobacco industry, for example—nothing against tobacco at all, but let's just say it's a personal value. You have the ability to say, ‘I don't want that inside my portfolio. Let's remove that.’ Or let's say you're overly concentrated in another individual industry or sector in your portfolio. You can exclude that from the index by customizing it.

Now, and what I would say is one of the most beneficial things, is being able to potentially outperform the index on an after-tax basis. I'll break that down for you because I'm not sure if that's gonna…” [laughs]

“Let's look at it like this. When we think of investors, a lot of times they focus on one item, and that's the amount before: did it go up or did it go down? When we're looking at direct indexing, as far as outperforming an index on an after-tax basis, we're viewing the portfolio in two layers.

equities work for you long-term?

Looking at layer one, [for example,] we had a million dollars in the portfolio and let's say the portfolio was up 20%. Well, by the end of the year, the portfolio would be valued at $1.2 million, right?

The best investment strategy is the one that allows you to sleep at night. If you can't sleep at night, maybe you're taking on too much risk.”

Now, layer two—and this is where we start to look at the outperforming on an after-tax basis—let's say we also locked in 8%, or $80,000, in losses. So, you get the performance of the 20% growth, but you're also getting 8% in losses. What does that mean?

Let's say you sold real estate and you have a capital gain [or] you're selling other securities outside of the direct index itself. You can use those losses [from the direct index] to offset those taxable gains, or you can carry those losses forward indefinitely.”

So, for people who haven't engaged with stocks or investing with stocks, is there a particular reason they should start now?

“Equities and stocks [have] historically been great defenses against taxes and inflation. Let's dig in a little deeper there. The average annualized total return from [something like the S&P 500] from 1970 to 2020 after taxes and inflation has been about 4.7%.

Now, let's [compare] bonds using the Bloomberg Government Bond Index: [in] the same time frame between 1970 to 2020, bonds after taxes and inflation are only up 0.1%.”

Ooh.

“You're starting to see it. Now, let's look at cash based upon the U.S. 30-Day Treasury Bill Index. During the same timeframe between 1970 to 2020, that yield for cash after taxes and inflation has been negative 1.4%.”

Uh-oh.

“Yeah. So, then it circles back to your question: why should I start now?”

I think for folks who don't typically engage with the stock market, they think about potential big gains, but also potential huge losses. How do you square that with it being a great defense against inflation? Do you just hold onto it? How do 60

“Well, in all honesty, you’ve got to expect some form of risk to be associated with investment. But that's why I think it's so important to start off with something like a financial plan, because we want to understand what your risk tolerance is and your risk appetite first.

It seems like there are a lot of scams out there, and they’re becoming increasingly sophisticated.

Are you aware of any schemes that people are trying lately to relieve people of their savings?

“It's something that's been on the rise here for years, and we’ve got to be very vigilant about it.

Clients [tell us], ‘Hey, I got an email about an investment,’ and it has exaggerated high returns with minimal risk, the first thing we say is: let's be skeptical. Instant returns or yields with no risk: probably not realistic.

We're also saying, well, ’Let's get all the information on this investment in writing.’ Anytime you feel like you're being pressured to make a decision quickly, you should see a red flag going off.

When you're getting links in the email, verify them.

Maybe you want to hover over the link to see exactly where it's taking you to. Or you can copy and paste it into the browser to see exactly what pops up. But in all things, in essence, do your research before you run directly into any kind of things you're receiving via email.”

Are there any hard and fast rules that you go by, regarding when it’s “okay” to use your savings?

“Let's take a step back and redefine the purpose of a savings account, where we want to define it as maybe a rainy day or an emergency fund. Essentially, it’s a way to protect yourself financially in case of illness, injury, or unexpected events.

What that's gonna be made up of, let's try to keep it around three to six months of essential living expenses.

Keep in mind, maybe you want a little bit more in your emergency fund [because] you might be changing jobs maybe within a year, or [you’re] anticipating any other significant life changes. [Your savings] is there to access immediately for any of those major life events.”

“Well, this is actually a really good question. And in all honesty, it's one of the reasons why I'm in this industry as well. In 2013, my grandmother passed away from ovarian cancer, leaving her estate to her only child, of course, my mother. My mother was an assistant principal and my father was an engineer at a local nuclear plant, and just thinking back, I can still recall the feeling of hopelessness that my family experienced through selling my grandmother's estate.

My mom worked in education and my dad was an engineer; [they] never had any financial education or experience to lean on at all. So, at that moment, I made the decision to develop the skillset to become a resource of financial guidance and literacy for my family [and other] families in need—one of the most empowering parts of my job.”

What has been the most valuable piece of advice, or rule that you live by that maybe you didn't expect to be?

“It's two things [that I learned from playing collegiate golf]: the first thing is understanding the difference between what you feel and what is real. The second thing is the importance of developing a strategy.”

What you feel and what is real. Is that research?

How does that play in finance?

“Let's say, for example, we're all looking at our portfolios and we feel we're doing fantastic jobs, or we feel that this is gonna be a great investment, or we feel that we need our ROI of twenty percent: What's real? What do we really need to do? What do we really need to accomplish?

What are our real goals?

We're not just investing. We're saying, I want to retire at age 65. And I want to make sure I leave an estate to my kids, and I want to have an estate at X amount of dollars, so I can travel to Bora Bora three times a year. Let's do that and develop our strategy to reverse engineer this, go back to the portfolio, and say, what do we need to do to accomplish these goals? Let's get the strategy together.

Let's be very strategic and disciplined in our approach.”

Is it ever too late to start saving?

“The key is really to develop a financial plan, get invested, [and] remain disciplined in your approach. Because there's a lot of different strategies, a lot of different solutions that we can piece together to help you in achieving your goals. And that also leans into the second part, the importance of developing a strategy. You know, if I want to use an analogy of playing golf, when you look at tour players, they're not out on the course just putting the tee in the ground and firing off at the flag, or firing off at the fairway for 18 holes. Whoever does it the best wins the tournament. They're putting together a strategy, saying, well, I'm gonna be on this side of the fairway, attacking this part of the green to hit this pin, and if the wind changes, or there's changes in humidity, or whatever it may be, we're gonna adjust our plan, our strategy. That's what investing is.”

It's all the stuff that they don't show you.

“100%. And if you look at it, even the conversations going on between the professional and the caddy, they're a lot more in-depth than two guys out just having a good time on a round of golf, right? The Creamery District

What was, once upon a time, the Borden milk plant in Tobin Hill is now home to seven (with an eighth in the works) unique restaurants, cafes, lounges, and a sports bar, collectively known as the Creamery District. Owner Moris Saide (Summer 2024 issue) that he intended for his patrons to linger. With multiple concepts in one complex, just walk 20 feet to a different establishment if you forget to make reservations in time for February 14. Amor Eterno is truly Southtown's sexiest bar. With a vibe that only Gimme Gimme's Aaron Peña (Summer 2023, Fall 2024 issues) could dream up and seasonally themed drink menus curated by co-owner JC Salinas (and a killer espresso martini to boot), it is a place for all lovers at heart, regardless of relationship status.

Sorrento's Ristorante

This always-packed Broadway gem is no secret. Owned by the same family for decades, the quaint Alamo Heights scratch-based kitchen tucked into a corner is authentic Italy on a plate with signature recipes crafted by Gino and his wife Anna (and her eggplant parmigiana is exquisite). Sorrento's is one of those places where they take care of you like real family. I can't imagine you'll be able to snag a table on Valentine's Day, but for that della casa house pink sauce (which HEB named as a finalist in 2023's Quest for the Best), it's worth a shot.

Scuzzi's Italian Restaurant

Maybe I've just been watching too much Sopranos, but Valentine's Day is made for carby goodness like only Italian food can supply. Scuzzi's is an elegant and spacious restaurant with service so good, I could swear they wore white gloves.

Definitely a place you take a romantic partner, but with private party rooms, Scuzzi's is also perfect for large groups. Have a Galentine's dinner!
