Increased demand leads to department’s expansion Grover Hermann doubles Physical Therapy unit to accommodate growth

BY FRED STABBERT III CALLICOON – A dramatic increase in the number of physical therapy patients has led to a huge expansion of the department at the Grover Hermann Division of Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC).

Located on Route 97, just two miles south of the hamlet of Callicoon, Grover Hermann has long serviced the Delaware River corridor with patient rooms, a 24hour emergency room and physical and occupational therapy offerings.

But a steady – and ever-increasing – stream of physical therapy patients during the past year led hospital officials to the decision to double the size of the unit.

“We are basically rehabbing the Physical Therapy Department in Callicoon,” CRMC Physical Therapy Director John Palowski said. “Over

the past five years the department has expanded and has expanded very rapidly recently.”

“The department is now located in the old surgical suite so very little remodeling was necessary. We doubled our size,” he said.

Callicoon Physical Therapy Site Manager Megan Eggleton said, “We see between 20 to 25 outpatients and patients on a daily basis.

“Students can get dropped off in front of the hospital [for their visit], which works very well,” she said.

“We have installed several new pieces of equipment, including a

new elliptical treadmill, which is technically called a non-linear Nu Step machine.

“A traction table will be delivered soon and we also have a combination electric stimulator and ultra sound machine,” Eggleton said.

“That is in addition to a portable electric stimulation unit.”

Eggleton said that part of the growth which Physical Therapy is experiencing is from patients doing prehabilitation – or pre-operative exercising.

Eggleton said many patients recover faster following surgery if they have built up their muscles before they go in.

In addition to having outpatients come in for physical therapy, Grover Hermann also offers a Bridge to Home service, which readies patients to leave the hospital.

“We offer that service to many hospital, including Wayne Memorial, Wilson Memorial and hospitals in New York City,” Eggleton said.

Palowski also credited some of Grover Hermann’s recent demand to its convenience.

“People don’t want to travel more than 15 minutes for a reoccurring appointment,” he said. “Grover Hermann meets that need.”

“We have a lot of graduates,” Eggleton said of her Physical Thera-

py department. “And we also have some repeat offenders – or alumni as we like to call them.”

Palowski also oversees physical occupation and speech therapy at both campuses of CRMC. “The occupational unit at Grover Hermann is getting a facelift as well,” he said. “Specifically the hand therapy side, which is a very intricate joint.

“When you have injuries, you need a specialist,” he said.

Peck’s aids local food pantries

Through December 15, each one of the stores will have a big donation bin for the local food pantries. Every item you donate goes into that bin and at the end of the drive Peck’s will add up the amount donated and match that amount with food.

It’s a win win situation for the food pantries. Last year, the pantry in Narrowsburg got $715 worth of food donated and then Peck’s gave the food pantry another $715. With the holidays coming upon us the pantries are in much need of food.

All five Peck’s stores are hoping to break last year’s amount and are looking to donate over $10,000 worth of food.

On October 10–12 Peck’s is having a three-day sale, a great time to start your donations. Items that the food pantry is in need of are soup, tuna, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, sauce, canned fruit, boxed rice, canned meat and mac and cheese.

Injections and masks – flu season is here

I

f you see staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital wearing protective masks, don’t be alarmed, say hospital officials. “The masks are a precaution and are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) during the flu season,” explained Kay Daley, RN/Infection Control.

During the influenza (flu) season, which generally runs from October 1 through March 31 of the following year, Daley said Wayne Memorial Hospital takes many steps to protect its patients, staff and visitors.

“Each year, the strains of influenza may be different from the last year, which is why we urge people to be vaccinated annually,” she continued, “and, at the same time, we revisit our visitation rules and public information pieces, such as flyers and posters, to make sure we are addressing the right symptoms to keep our community safe.”

Wayne Memorial has campaigned heavily this year for all of its staff, particularly its clinical staff, to be vaccinated against the flu. And if they’re

not vaccinated, all staff is required to wear a mask within six feet of patient care areas.

“Even if you don’t have the flu, if you come into contact with someone who does, you can bring it into a patient’s room or your home,” said Daley.

Wayne Memorial’s Employee Health Nurse Cindy Lazorack, RN, and the hospitals Director of Patient Care Services, Jim Pettinato, RN, would like to see at least 90 percent of the staff vaccinated against the flu.

Influenza, a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses, can cause mild to severe illness.

Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or death.

Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with chronic health conditions are at high risk for serious flu complications.

This season’s flu vaccine will protect against the influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the season. This includes an influenza A (H1N1) virus, an influenza A (H3N2) virus, and one or

two influenza B viruses, depending on the flu vaccine.

The hospital is asking anyone with flu or flu-like symptoms – coughing, fever, sore throat, diarrhea, nausea – to please visit on another day when they are better.

The bottom line, Daley reiterated, is simple, “If you don’t want yourself or

others to get sick, get vaccinated.”

Melanoma symptoms frequently diagnosed by podiatrists W

hen members of the New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA) were surveyed on whether they had ever discovered melanoma or skin cancer during a routine foot examination, 75 percent of the foot specialist respondents answered positively.

Survival rates are dramatically lower when melanoma is found on the foot since it often goes unnoticed until the patient is having a serious problem. If the melanoma is not caught in the early stages, the fatality rate is about 50 percent within five years of diagnosis. All the more reason for checking your feet on a regular basis, say doctors of podiatric medicine.

C – Change in color.

D – Diameter of the lesion. If it is large or getting larger.

E – Evolving. Changing in size, shape, border, color, itching.

F – Fingernail or toenail bruise that

does not grow out with the nail.

“I’ve diagnosed melanoma through routine foot exams,” said Dr. Robert A. Russo, president of the New York State Podiatric Medical Association and a practicing podiatrist. “One example is a patient who came in thinking they had a plantar wart, but the biopsy I ordered proved it to be melanoma.”

Feet that are not regularly exposed to the sun during the year are very sensitive. Skin cancer can occur on the soles of the feet, as well as on the tops, between the toes and under the nails. Podiatrists say that it is important to have routine foot checks to diagnose any abnormalities that could be symptoms of the disease.

The majority of Americans have been conditioned to protect themselves by staying out of the sun or using a broad-spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

But many times feet, especially toes, are not given proper sunscreen protection. Additionally, sunscreen must be reapplied regularly, especially after going in the water.

Signs of malignant melanoma – one of the most deadly forms of skin cancer – include changes to moles such as itchiness and bleeding. Also, normal lesions are generally one color, with a distinct border, and about the size of a pea or smaller and do not dramatically grow in size. The A,B,Cs of possible melanoma lesions are: A – Asymmetrical shape.

B – Bleeding or oozing.

LIBERTY — The Town of Liberty Parks and Recreation Department is offering two American Red Cross Training Programs.

CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers: The purpose of this course is to train professional-level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children, and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. Participants must be 15 years of age by the start date of the class.
