honey. When hunters use mock rubs, they are using an effective natural decoy to attract a deer. As anglers know, to get a bass to strike a lure, or a trout to take a fly, the presentation must be NATURAL to encourage a hit. It is no different with deer. Deer respond to decoy tactics enthusiastically – but only if the presentation looks natural to them. When it does, a decoy, like a mock rub, will work flawlessly much of the time. Deer respond to their environment by a compulsion, reflex, or an inclination. These elements drive deer to investigate many different aspects in their environment. The only thing that prevents a deer from examining something that interests it, is if any of its senses sets off an alarm. Therefore, a mock rub must be interpreted by the buck’s instincts that it looks and smells natural enough to inspect safely. CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

“Like any successful business, where to set up shop is crucial to success.”

Deer react to visual, scent, and sound stimulation tactics. Deer are instinctively drawn to this type of stimuli. For more than 50 years, I have used that fact when hunting deer in North America. Visual, scent, and sound stimulation strategies include mock rubs, scrapes, calls, rattling, plastic fruit, fake ears of corn, tanned deer tails, full-sized deer decoys, deer scents, and other attracting tactics. For me, mock rubs have proven to be an effective visual and scent stimulus tool that ignites this type of instinctive, investigative behavior. You, too, can benefit greatly by creating mock rubs. The absolute key to having a mature buck come into a fake rub, though, is to create the entire illusion of what a buck expects to see and smell.

GEORGE BURKLE, INC.

You will discover this ploy will undoubtedly be one of the best decoys to lure in even the most cunning buck to gun or bow. A mock rub can help you to kill a buck of a lifetime. Therefore, build it right, and they will come!

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Like any successful business, where to set up shop is crucial to success. This adage applies to where you make a mock rub. A fake rub works best when it is made in an area where there are current natural rubs. When a mock rub is made near a natural rub, the fake rub should match the direction the natural rub is facing and its height on the tree. A mock rub can also be made near a rub from the prior season. This is especially true when the rub is on a large tree that shows wear and tear from being rubbed repeatedly over many seasons. This type of rub is called a sign-post rub; it is generally made

SIZE MATTERS After you have found a location to make a mock rub, what is the next step? The key is to not make your rub so large that it appears like it was made by Godzilla! Never create a rub that will look like it was made by the biggest, bad-a_s buck in the woods. Always match the height of a natural rub; make your rub on a similar size tree and slightly shorter in length. Doing this will help attract bucks of all age groups more effectively. Even adult bucks shy away from leaving their olfactory calling cards at a rub that appears it was made by heavyweight George Foreman. Hence, when a buck sees a substantially large rub, it can quickly be put-off by its size, instantly become wary and will often avoid it. If the area you choose has

several natural rubs nearby, match your mock rub’s height to the longest natural rub.

BUILD IT RIGHT AND THEY WILL COME! Before making a mock rub, it is necessary to limit your human odor. Wear unscented surgical gloves and disposable shoe coverings. Using the overall length of the longest natural rub you found (for example, 10 inches), make your mock rub the same length at the same height. A mock rub can be made with a knife, hand saw, or natural antler. I use a single small 8-point antler to make my mock rubs. Antler bone has an odor that will adhere to the tree – creating more realism. I always want to create the entire illusion when decoying deer. Rub the tree vigorously up and down several times removing most, if not all, of the bark. Do not totally remove any shredded bark that hangs down – it will help to create a more natural look. by adult bucks. I have had greater success with making a mock rub near a fresh rub. However, I once killed an 11-point buck in Bellvale, NY as it came to my mock rub which was close to a natural sign-post rub.

Remember, don’t make your mock rub any longer than the longest natural rub nearby. Next, it is crucial for you to measure the rub with a small measuring tape. Do not skip this step.

SMELL DIS For some, the following may come as a surprise. Rubs and scrapes are not the property of a single buck; that’s a misnomer.

tarsal gland and vomeronasal organ). Realistically, it is not possible for a hunter to include all 17 different olfactory messages bucks deposit at natural rubs on a mock-rub. Fortunately, commercial scents will work quite well. Use scents in moderation to make their odors smell as natural as possible. Using too much of any scent will lessen your chances of success. Use a few drops of a commercially made forehead scent on a clean bore patch. Rub the patch along the entire length of the rub. With a new patch, rub an allseason deer scent on the remaining bark. At the base of the tree, place two to three squirts of tarsal scent. Several inches from the tree’s base, generously squirt several drops of buck urine. Then add a SINGLE DROP of interdigital scent as well. While walking away make a few more squirts of buck urine. Spray the buck

urine side-to-side, as a buck would. A doe squats and urinates in a single spot – a buck urinates and drips as it walks. You have ‘Created the Entire Illusion’ – the mock rub is complete.

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS You can expect the first buck that comes by to see and smell the rub. If the rub looks and smells natural, the buck’s instinctive behavior leaves it no choice. Unless the buck smells, sees, or hears you – it will go toward the mock-rub. Often, it will stop short of it momentarily and stare at it. Then the buck will urinate and move directly to the rub. Once there, it will sniff and lick the rub several times, analyzing the scents left from the other buck that made it. CONTINUED ON PAGE 17

Then the buck will enthusiastically rub its antlers on the tree until it is satisfied it has left enough of its own olfactory odors on the rub for the next buck to smell. Once satisfied, the buck will begin to walk away urinating as it leaves. I want to be perfectly clear here – the tactic doesn’t work 100% of the time – but it does work enough to rank high on my list of decoy strategies. My records indicate the most successful dates when bucks have responded to a mock rub were from October 10 through November 5. That doesn’t mean you cannot have success earlier or later. CONCLUSION If after three hunts you have not seen a buck at your fake rub, it is time to reevaluate the spot. Here is where the importance of measuring your rub comes into play. After measuring the rub, if it is the same length you made it, move on, and try the tactic

someplace else – it will eventually work. However, if your rub is longer, you know without question a buck did indeed visit it. Hunt the rub a few more times (I highly recommend from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). If you have no response by then, make another mock rub in a new location. So, there you have it. Mock rubs are one of my better and more successful tactics.

A CLOSING THOUGHT… There has been a lot said and written about large natural rubs. The speculation is adult bucks only rub large trees. Hence, young bucks only rub small sapling type trees. This belief is only somewhat true, but not always so. I have recorded on video many adult antlered bucks rubbing thin saplings, and many small antlered deer, including spikes, rubbing exceptionally large trees with big circumferences. I mention this only to make a point – it is important when hunting whitetails to understand that nothing about a deer’s behavior is written in stone.

New York State DEC

CELEBRATES 50 YEARS

24 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, FALL-WINTER 2020

In recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), here’s some background on their Forest Rangers and Environmental Conservation Officers, as well as short bios of the great men and women who serve Sullivan County.

DEC Forest Rangers

Ranger Howard Kreft Howard Kreft became a Forest Ranger because he loves nature and the Catskill Mountains in Sullivan County provide ample opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Ranger Kreft also appreciates the versatility that comes from being a Forest Ranger with respect to law enforcement, search and rescue, wildfires, emergency management, and public education. The most rewarding part of the job for Ranger Kreft is helping people during an emergency.

D

EC celebrates their 50th anniversary this year, but their Forest Rangers have been on the front lines for even longer, protecting New York's wildlife, natural resources, residents, and visitors for more than a century. The State’s brave Forest Rangers have a vast knowledge of first aid, land navigation, and technical rescue techniques that are critical to the success of their missions in remote wilderness areas, rugged mountainous peaks, white water rivers, frozen lakes, and forested areas statewide. “We are proud of the work our Forest Rangers perform and look forward to another 50 years and beyond of highly-trained service,” said the DEC. Statewide in 2019, DEC Forest Rangers conducted 337 search and rescue missions, extinguished 74 wildfires that burned a total of 212 acres, participated in 29 prescribed fires that burned and rejuvenated 645 acres, and worked on cases that resulted in 2,507 tickets or arrests. Five Forest Rangers cover Sullivan County for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). DEC’s Forest Rangers respond to search and rescue incidents statewide. Working with other state agencies, local emergency response organizations, and volunteer search and rescue groups, Forest Rangers locate and extract lost, injured, or distressed people from across New York State. Below are the bios for the DEC Forest Rangers who cover Sullivan County:

Ranger Griggsby T. Cowart III Griggsby Cowart was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and enlisted in the Marine Corps from 1996 to 2019 as a KC-130 Navigator. Griggsby became a Forest Ranger in 2019 to continue public service in a capacity that allows for daily variety and adventure. Ranger Cowart enjoys the job because every day is a challenge and brings new experiences and chances to grow professionally. He is currently living in the Bloomingburg area where he primarily patrols the Roosa Gap and Wurtsboro Ridge State forests in addition to the CONTINUED ON PAGE 27 CATSKILL-DELAWARE, FALL-WINTER 2020 • 25

Forest Ranger Richard Franke Jr. Ranger Richard Franke Jr. is 29 years old and an avid outdoorsman and golfer. He grew up in Liberty and patrols Sullivan County. The diversity of the job and working outside attracted him to becoming a Ranger. Ranger Franke can find himself on snowmobile patrol one day and on a backcountry rescue for an injured hiker the next.

Ranger R. Erik Stratton Ranger Stratton started his career with DEC in 2007 as a fish and wildlife technician out of DEC’s Region 9 Allegany office where he worked until 2013 when he entered the DEC Forest Ranger academy. Upon completion of the academy, Ranger Stratton was assigned to DEC Forest Ranger Richard Franke Jr.

Ranger academy in December 2019 so she is relatively new to the job and the area. Ranger Allwine reports that Sullivan County is a great place to be a new Ranger since you get to experience all the different aspects of the job, plus you get to work on incidents with many other agencies. She’s a lifelong learner who loves to be outside and the work Rangers do is challenging in different ways every day. It’s a fantastic job with a lot of opportunity to focus on personal areas of interest whether it be search, medical, or fire, and she really enjoys that adaptability. The duo has also started some refreshing of the interior of the rustic bar and dining room (added in the 1990s), including a pandemic project of remodeling the main barroom. “We want everyone to be comfortable here, I don’t want anyone to think that they have to change out of their work clothes to come for a home-cooked meal. It’s not fancy, it’s friendly here.” Shawna explained. And come they do. Some diners come in for the famous Prime Rib, Juddy’s chicken, or BBQ Ribs. Some come for the catfish, haddock, scallops, steamers, or other seafood specialties. Others grab a burger and a local beer or build their own pizzas (The Red Schoolhouse offers a variety of crusts from homemade dough to cauliflower) to pair with local wine (by the glass or bottle). There’s a full bar, if a cocktail or mixed drink are more your speed. Most diners wisely finish off their meal with one of Shawna’s desserts (like pumpkin pie or

The menu offers choices to satisfy any craving you may have: appetizers, homemade soups, sandwiches and burgers (including Bison), Italian standards, and surf and turf. Most are served with the potato of your choice, corn or apple sauce, and the salad bar. There is a reason that the “regulars” come in time after time to have their favorites, or try something new. Many customers have been coming since Shawna was an employee! The pandemic has had a devastating effect on the restaurant and bar industry. Shawna and Wes were lucky to be new business owners of a business they know so intimately, having done (and still do, sometimes) every job from dishes to ordering. They were buoyed by the support and flexibility of their family (they are parents to three girls, 10 months to 15 years old) and the customers that came to support the restaurant and its staff, ordering take-out meals when dining in was not an option. There’s no business like snowshoe business STORY AND PHOTOS BY SHANNON CILENTO

I

t’s a blustery January morning in the far reaches of the Tug Hill Plateau. The wind chill is -15⁰F. A heavy, wet snow is falling in sheets. My feet are soaked and I have what feels like cinderblocks strapped to them, though I haven’t been able to feel the ends of my legs for the last two miles. Ice crystals are dancing on my lashes. Yet, despite the conditions, I am thrilled to be exactly where I am. Each winter, hundreds of athletes like myself descend upon the small upstate NY community of Mannsville, population 343. The reason? To compete in one of the country’s largest snowshoe races at Winona State Forest. I know what you’re thinking. Snowshoe race? Yes, you read that correctly. There is a community of people across the world that strap snowshoes to their feet and run races of

various distances—5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons—competing not only against each other, but against an unforgiving winter climate in the North Country. I wasn’t always a competitive snowshoe runner, nor did I know the sport existed. Growing up in the small upstate village of Mexico, NY, I completed the snowshoeing unit in gym class. I hiked, snowshoed and cross-country skied on the weekends with my family. What truly captivated me about winter and led me to discover Winona State Forest was dog sled racing. The forest was an annual training ground for Iditarod hopefuls and the public was welcome to watch. This childhood memory led me to look at the Winona Forest Recreation Association website in 2015. As I searched for upcoming dog CONTINUED ON PAGE 42

sled events, I stumbled across the Stone Wall Snowshoe Race. I was already an avid runner and decided to sign up. I had no idea what I was in for, or just how serious this sport is. The United States Snowshoe Association (USSSA) is the official governing body in the US for snowshoe racing and hosts the annual National Snowshoe Championships, while the World Snowshoe Federation (WSSF) is its international counterpart. Both organizations are perennially advocating for the sport’s inclusion into the Winter Olympics. To prepare for the first race in January 2016, I trained by running 4-5 miles with ankle weights around the Cornell University campus, where I attended graduate school at the time. The icy December hills in Ithaca proved to be an ideal training ground. Training also provided a brief daily intermission from the stress of coursework. The weather on race day was less than desirable. The temperature hovered around 32⁰F and it was pouring rain. Ice was forming over the several inches of snow already covering the

ground. Those around me wore custom racing snowshoes, some had sponsorships, others were collegiate athletes. I remember trying to silence the voice in my head telling me I was way out of my league and would be the last to crawl across the finish line. As the gun sounded, all my nerves melted away with the rain. The course started on groomed snowmobile trails and quickly turned off into an unmarked section of dense coniferous forest, winding up and down steep hills and riverbanks, and even across a frozen creek. Somehow—and I’m still not sure how—I finished that race in fourth place for the women’s division. The adrenaline I experienced in that first race cultivated a passion for snowshoe racing. I had already begun counting down the days to the next race before I even finished the first. I was fortunate to compete in one final race at

Winona this past January before the pandemic took hold. While the upcoming race season is riddled with uncertainty, you will likely find me snowshoeing on one of the many trails in Sullivan County as soon as the first flake sticks to the ground. Though I’m not sure the U.S. Women’s Snowshoe Champion title is in my future, there are several things of which I am certain. First, whether it is welcomed or not, winter always finds its way back to the Northeast. Second, Sullivan County is the perfect playground to enjoy the cold winter months. There is a strong network of trails, including flat segments of the Sullivan O&W Rail Trail which are ideal for a first foray into the world of snowshoeing. If you’re searching for a new trail to try snowshoeing, a great local go-to source is www.trailkeeper.org. Finally, despite a global pandemic, we can all strap on our snowshoes and hit the trails together, this winter and those to come. The snow must go on.

B

ow hunting season in New York State, running from October 1 to November 20 in the Southern Zone, attracts outdoorsmen from across the region who enjoy the challenge and excitement. According to Archery Trade Association President and CEO Matt Korman, the Industry is seeing growth in ways they haven’t seen before. “People are tired of being at home and want to get out,” Korman said in August. “Most states are reporting increased participation. This points to tremendous participation this fall, 48 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, FALL-WINTER 2020

which is great for our industry.” That’s good news for Walt Travis of Woodbourne. For the past 31 years, the Travis family has been dedicated to the sport of archery in Sullivan County. Started by his father, Howard Travis Jr., Travis Archery once hosted an indoor archery range in the basement beneath the Garry’s Great American grocery store on Main Street in Liberty. Travis Archery offers a range for anyone looking to hone their skills.

Walt now carries on the family tradition on his property on 332 Clak A Road in Woodbourne where they’ve been able to expand and offer even more services to those with a passion for the sport. “We lost a few people and gained a few people since the move, but we still have a lot of loyal customers,” Walt said about moving the business about eight years ago. In addition to the bow shop, which takes up the bottom floor of his home, Travis Archery boasts a sprawling 1,500-square foot all-season range split into five shooting lanes at 20-yards apiece. A corrections officer by day, Walt runs the business during the evenings and on weekends. The father-and-son duo, both considered masters of their craft, still work closely together and Travis Archery is as much of a family business as it ever was. They often host the Catskills Mountain Archers – a club of archery enthusiasts from across Sullivan County – as well as leagues for different age groups – from youngsters to adults. “That kind of got shutdown due to Covid –– • Bryan & Barbara are ready and waiting for you at the front counter and by the phone or computer to take your orders.

While other businesses have struggled to keep the lights on during the Covid-19 pandemic, Travis Archery has found itself in a different position. Walt said they’ve been selling more bows and equipment than he expected they would. “I didn’t think people would be worried about bows and such when everyone's losing their job and here I am running out of stuff, Travis said.

“I can’t get equipment fast enough when everyone is looking to be doing more outdoor activities.” And it’s not just the enthusiasts and regular customers. Travis said he’s been seeing a lot of new people come through his shop. Since the DEC started allowing people to take a certified hunter safety course online, Travis said it’s boosted the number of people looking to get involved in the sport. “There’s not much better social distancing than to go out and sit in a tree by yourself for a while,” Walt said with a laugh. “It’s the challenge of a bow hunt that attracts a lot of sportsmen,” Travis said. “With a bow, you have Walt Travis to be within 20 or 30 yards of a Travis Archery deer whereas with a rifle you can be 200 yards from a deer. That changes the game dramatically.” New products and technologies are also

expanding the sport to more people. New York State allows the use of crossbows for a small portion of the archery season. “That’s another market for me, but it’s not the whole season and New York has a lot of restrictive laws when it comes to which crossbows I can sell,” Travis said. For example, New York requires a minimum crossbow width of 17 inches (outer tip of limbs, excluding wheels and cams, uncocked). Travis says a lot of manufacturers are now making crossbows that are 8 or 10 inches wide. “It really limits what kind of crossbows you’re allowed to hunt with,” Travis said. No matter what kind of equipment, Walt looks forward to carrying on the family tradition as | more people look to the great outdoors to restore some internal sense of normalcy. “It’s going to be a great season this year,” he said.

Ants use their flexible antennae as sensory organs for smelling, touching, feeling and communicating with other ants. Attached to the front of the head, the antennae can even move in back of the ant.

Old as the hills, Ants cuddle to sleep away the colder months 56 • CATSKILL-DELAWARE, FALL-WINTER 2020

nts surviving winter? You’ve got to be kidding. But it’s true. The very ants we might have seen under a rock all spring and summer begin to stoke up on food and put on poundage as outside temperatures cool. They huddle together in their colony's nest as cold-bloodedness allows them to adapt body temperatures to the environment. Ants have fascinated humankind for centuries, their creepiness on picnic platters notwithstanding. Hearkening back to the days of dinosaurs about 160 million years ago, today’s 10,000 ant varieties all sport large heads, flexible antennae, powerful jaws and sticky feet that allow them to climb vertical surfaces like trees or kitchen walls.

At certain times, the queen produces winged males and females groomed to mate with ants from other colonies. After mating, the male ants die. The mated queens fly off and start new colonies. The great botanist, zoologist, and physician Carl Linnaeus once wrote “Nature is most marvelous in the smallest of her creatures.” And so it is with the ants. Living together in huge groups, these insects divide the labor of finding food, rearing their young and defending their nests. Ants are tough and strong, despite their smallness. Depending on the species, an ant can carry up to 100 times its weight: the equivalent of a 150-pound human lugging around 150,000 pounds. Ants' strength comes from the fact their body mass is mostly muscle and from their powerful jaws. Termed mandibles, these mouth parts can carry food particles, construct nests and even tote one another – one worker lifting another in its jaws to move the ant towards a food pickup site or to help with nest building. The creature's antennae are also hard working. The feelers are used for finding the way, smelling, locating food, and recognizing other ants and communicating with them. Chemicals in the ant body also help to alert others of danger

MARVELS HIDDEN UNDER ROCKS The famed National Geographic Society calls ants “enthusiastically” social, a sweet description of the tiny creatures related to wasps and bees. All live in structured nest communities, the ants themselves typically nesting underground but also found on ground-level mounds or in trees. Ants begin life as eggs and proceed through larva, pupa, and adult stage. Ant colonies are headed by a queen, whose function is to lay thousands of eggs so that the colony can survive. Worker ants are wingless and are the insects typically seen by humans. They forage for food, care for the eggs, work on the nests and protect the community.

HONEYDEW AND SOCIAL DISTANCING Out-of-doors, ants typically eat nectar, seeds, fungus, or insects. They also sip “honeydew,” the name for the sweet substance emitted by aphids that feed on plants or trees. Ants stroke the aphids with their antenna, causing the insects to excrete the sweet liquid. The ants swallow it and store it in their own special holding stomachs. Back at the nest, the delicacy is shared with the queen and other workers. Some ant species even keep live aphids in their nest, giving them food and shelter in exchange for the tasty honeydew. Like all living creatures, ants’ presence is essential. Their many underground tunnels aerate the soil and allow moisture to get to the roots of plants. They till the earth by bringing pebbles and particles to the surface. They feed on organic waste and on insects or other dead animals,

serving as decomposers. In the process of gathering food, ants pollinate flowers and distribute seeds. Ants themselves are the source of food for beetles, caterpillars, flies, snails, snakes, fish, birds and bears. And, in times of Covid, the behavior of ants might serve humans as a humbling lesson. When a contagious fungal disease sweeps through their society, both sick and healthy ants rapidly change their behavior in ways that slow disease transmission. They reduce social interactions, spending more time away from the colony, until the disease has passed.
