A ‘Back to School’ Story:

Lee Siegel gets his ‘diploma’ – 71 years late

arlier this spring, Lee Siegel of Livingston Manor made up for his interrupted college education when he received a certificate from the Ithaca College School of Music that recognized the course work he completed before joining the war – as well as service to the country.

The former Town of Rockland supervisor, who’s now 93, reminisced, “I finished my third year in May 1942… December 7, 1941 – Japan attacked, and that was that.

Four to five years later I got out of service. During that time I was stationed in South Carolina, and I

met my wife Marjorie and we got married. We came back and opened a business in Livingston Manor – I had to make a living, so I never went back to college to finish my education.”

That decision proved to be a prudent one, for the business grew to be the very successful department store, The Siegel, at one time the second largest in Sullivan County.

It operated from 1945 to 1982.

this May. Despite his curtailed education, Siegel always kept up with music, and still plays the saxophone together with Gary and Max, who both play the trumpet and piano. They perform regularly on Wednesdays during the summer for the Callicoon Center Band.

“I just want to say I’m proud of the way Gary picked up from when I left and became a very successful music educator. After 55 years, he’s still my little boy,” Siegel said, noting his first choice of career as a music educator.

Gary, who’s just retired from Liberty Central School after 32 years of teaching, described how giving his dad the belated recognition came about.

“When Max was a freshman, we went to a reception at Ithaca at President Thomas Rochon’s house. I got talking to him how Max was [enrolled] and how I and my dad had gone there. He was very intrigued about it, and from then on we tried to figure a way that [Lee] could be honored.

“We talked about it,” Gary added. “[Rochon] said he would work with the Dean of Music School Craig Cum-

mings and try to come up with some way to honor dad. We had conversations for a couple of years.”

Those conversations resulted in Lee receiving his award in the middle of a symphonic concert at which his grandson Max was playing earlier this year .

Lee was not in the know about the honor until he was told on the way up.

Max said, “I told a lot of my friends about it… Many were touched by it in the concert.”

When Lee attended the college, it only had about 600 students, and offered only music, drama and artistic subjects. Now it’s a regular college with about 6,000 students.

The Certificate reads, “In sincere appreciation of your service to our country, and in acknowledgement of the coursework completed at Ithaca College (1939–1942) before being called to duty, Ithaca College and the School of Music recognize Lee Siegel. On this day April 16, 2013, Ithaca College, School of Music.”

ing Tech. He is pursuing a career in sound recording and is currently working at the Levon Helm Studio in Woodstock. Gary is busy running fundraiser baseball trips, and Lee seems to be enjoying himself.

“Now Max is taking the ball and rolling with it,” he chuckled.

Catholic Schools offer scholarships

LIBERTY — St. Peter’s Regional School in Liberty is among 129 in the Archdiocese of New York taking part in the “Children’s Scholarship Partnership – Regionalization Rewards Program.�

Effective September 2013, 1,000 partial-tuition scholarships will be offered to public school children who wish to attend these Catholic elementary schools.

The maximum scholarship amount for academic year 2013-2014 is $2,800, with the actual amount awarded per student to be calculated on a sliding scale determined by the family’s income and the target school’s tuition. Scholarships are available to incoming public school students in grades 1-6. However, Kindergarten children from all schools will be eligible, not just those entering from the public school system. Scholarships are renewable through grade 8 if a family demonstrates continued financial need and

funding remains available. Since these are partial tuition scholarships, families are responsible for tuition and fees not covered by the award.

Funding for these scholarships is provided by the Children’s Scholarship Fund, a national scholarship organization, and the Archdiocese of New York, as part of its recent regionalization process. The Children’s Scholarship Fund currently administers three other archdiocesan scholarship programs, and the application process and awarding of these new scholarships will be modeled after those existing Children’s Scholarship programs already in place.

Boys & Girls Clubs launch ‘Backpack for Hope’ drive A

huge drive to put backpacks filled with school supplies into the hands of needy children this fall is being launched by the Town of Wallkill Boys and Girls Club.

“Each year brings greater demand as the need increases in our communities. We started three years ago with around a dozen backpacks, and we’re hoping to give more than 200 stuffed backpacks this year!” said BGC Executive Director Alexis Eggleton.

Through Friday, August 23 you can visit your favorite local businesses from the list below and drop off supplies. he Leadership Sullivan graduation earlier this summer was another occasion for new SUNY Sullivan President Karin Hilgerson to tout the college’s 50th anniversary and outline its impact on the community and its plans for the future.

Hilgerson took office in February, culminating a search process which began in April 2012 and included more than 40 candidates to succeed Dr. William Murabito. He in turn had taken over for longtime college head Dr. Mamie Howard-Golladay on an interim basis in 2011.

“I was drawn here because I was looking for a presidency of a small college,” Hilgerson told the crowd.

“With a small core of faculty you can take risks and do things differently.

“I’ve never been a city slicker. I’m a rural person,” she added.

Part of what made Hilgerson undertake the cross country trek from her previous job in Oregon was what she tabbed “the extremely well known

and highly respected” SUNY system and its support for community colleges.

Two developments have impacted the college positively in recent years, she noted: The on-campus dorms and the expansion of the athletic programs.

“The residence halls have improved [our position] dramatically,” she said.

“They are safe, and students who live there build collegiality.”

In addition, “We have great athletes, and it adds a lot when you have competitive sports teams.”

Hilgerson made note of the college’s unique mix of county and out-ofcounty student population, with the urban culture of New York City meeting Sullivan’s rural character.

“We want them to learn from one another, to expose students to other cultures. That is exciting,” she said, adding that she hopes to attract at least 100 students from other countries. To that end, the college has hired a international student program coordinator.

The Hilgerson file • Before coming to SUNY Sullivan, Hilgerson was the vice president for Instruction at Central Oregon Community College in Bend. In addition she served as: • Executive vice president of Instruction at Walla Walla Community College.

• Dean of Arts and Sciences at Spokane Community College, where she was also interim dean of Liberal Arts and Vocational Related Education.

• Communications Studies instructor at Spokane CC. • BA in Organizational Communications from California State University Stanislaus.

• MS. in Rhetoric and Communication and a PhD in Educational Policy and Management, both from the University of Oregon.

What SUNY Sullivan said: Dr. Hilgersom brings with her five years of executive-level experience, five years of experience as a dean, and 16 years of full-time faculty experience, including time as a department chair. In particular, her experience leading transfer and workforce programs will be an important asset at SUNY Sullivan, as will her work with major and minor capital building projects from pre-design through completion.

Her impressive background ranges from work in governance to grants; policy analysis to research; and the classroom to administration.

Hilgerson revealed, “I had to make some very hard decisions in my first 90 days to prepare for next year.”

Her goals include raising funds for capital improvements and expanding enrollment with new programs and scholarships.

“The world around us has changed in unbelievable ways and all colleges need to be held to a higher standard,” she noted. “The old style of learning was ‘Just give the facts.’ Now, you have to show me how we can synthesize information. How we can use it.”

Hilgerson highlighted the new Respi-

ratory Care program, given in collaboration with the Center for Discovery.

She revealed that every single participant was already guaranteed job placement at the Center upon graduation.

Demand for specialists is so high and the jobs pay so well that, “it was hard to find faculty.”

“We need to have a well-educated citizenry,” Hilgerson pronounced. “We can play a role in [the county’s] economic development and meeting workforce training needs.”

Hilgerson was supportive of Governor Cuomo’s plan to create tax-free

zones around upstate community colleges, including SUNY Sullivan. StartUp New York will give breaks to businesses who will “be aligned with or further the academic mission of the campus, college or university sponsoring the tax-free community.”

“We have to recognize that if we want corporations to pay living wages for employees doing sophisticated work,” Hilgerson pointed out, “we need programs such as the one the governor is proposing. We’re competing globally against countries where governments totally subsidize [entire industries].”

nsurance considerations should be at the top of your college checklist, according to the Professional Insurance Agents of New York State Inc.(PLANY).

The trade association that represents agents across the state reminds students and their parents to contact their insurance agent to verify the specifics of their policies and educate themselves about any coverage limitations. You may need to purchase additional coverage for your child’s possessions, depending upon where your child will live at college.

“Check your homeowner’s policy to see if the items your child is taking to college are covered in case they are damaged or stolen,” said Michael J. Skeele, CIC, CPIA, president of PIANY. “Prepare and maintain a list of possessions such as computers, televisions, stereos, cameras and jewelry, including the original cost and their purchase date. If the value of these items exceeds the off-premises coverage limit of your homeowner’s policy, you may want to purchase additional coverage. You’d be surprised how everything adds up.”

Students living on campus may be protected by their parents’ homeowner’s policy, as long as the student maintains residency in the parents’ household.

Some insurers expressly define what “residency” means in their policy, but many insurers leave room for interpretation. Before a claim occurs, be sure to find out what criteria your insurer uses to determine whether your student child is still a resident of your household.

College students renting an off-campus apartment or house while away at school should consider purchasing a renter’s policy. In order to get the best protection, choosing a scheduled cover-

age option often makes sense for highvalue possessions, such as computers, musical instruments and jewelry.

Auto insurance is another consideration for college-bound kids. If your child is attending school more than 100 miles from home without custody of a household vehicle, you may be eligible for a reduction in your auto insurance premi-

ums. If your child has custody of a vehicle at school, then the insurer may want to rate your insurance based upon where the vehicle is garaged. And, don’t forget to instruct your child on what to do in case of an accident and make sure they know where the important documents (i.e., insurance card and vehicle registration) can be found, suggests PIANY.

“It’s a good idea to contact your professional, independent insurance agent whenever a major life change occurs,” said Skeele. “College is one of them. Parents and students should be fully aware of the options available to them.”
