Goldman Sachs Corporate Office New York, NY Interior Architecture This holistic, 3 million square foot, interior work environment was explored to be positioned future forward. It was developed to allow for the integration of work, fitness, and relaxation into one vertical campus setting, representing current cultural shifts in the workplace.

With the intention of improving the quality of life for their employees, incorporated was a hotel and spa along with a state of the art sports club, child care and retail as part of this corporate office and facility project. Pivotal to the design thinking were considerations of people at a human scale.

Hospitality Education & Fitness Amenities We envisioned a space for expanding the D&G College curriculum offerings with a new program of Hospitality, Food and Beverages to be contained in the existing campus. Our design solution inserts a professional level kitchen and restaurant enabling knowledge building and career specialization while providing students opportunities for real life experiences in a fine dining facility.

Balancing the needs of accreditation approvals with existing facilities and design, our solution captures usable space in a transparent building insert. This new addition set between the existing green trapezoidal volumes of the library and the adjacent purple classroom pod, provides functional space while showcasing the new curricular components.

Inver House Distillers Office Interior Airdrie, Scotland, UK

HQ Office and Visitor Center

Published w/ Multi Media Acknowledgement Focused on reaching their growing international ambitions while maintaining their award winning Scottish identity, Inver House Distillers (IHD) and The Collective worked together to realize the company’s identity and brand starting with their head quarter office building.

Using the artist’s notion of magnification, we expanded the flat image of “the brand” into a larger than life, all encompassing brand experience.

Charles Schwab Retail Branch New York, NY IIDA National Award This prototype for a new retail environment incorporates all attributes of interior architecture to create a consistent brand and customer experience in all branches.

One of the main objectives for the project was to orchestrate the client experience from street curb to financial advisor, creating a positive, rewarding exchange that attracts target customers and supports the development of more profitable relationships with existing clients.

The Mohawk Group Flagship Showroom New York, NY Interior Architecture

Award Winner Multi Media Published Project A first for Mohawk, this flagship showroom was designed for real estate flexibility and efficiency to host seven significant and distinct carpet and flooring brands.

Acknowledging that “carpet is king,� all design inspiration was drawn from flooring materials, manufacturing process and accouterments. The design concept uses the metaphor of a carpet roll unfurling with the two cylindrical volumes designated as Reception and a shared meeting space connecting the two ends of the floor.

With spectacular four-sided views the showroom enjoys a strong Southern exposure. The curtain (made from carpet backing material) is both functional and metaphorical and acts as the connector weaving through all carpet brands.

Best of Show, HD Expo in Las Vegas, NV Award Winner Multi Media Published Project A 3-D interpretation of the printing process used in the manufacturing of the new printed carpet collection for Durkan Patterned.

Carpet designs were separated by individual pattern layers and printed on sheer fabric which was installed as a sequence of volumes allowing for the printing process to be dynamically experienced and explored.

Interactive Sculptural Installation

Televised w/ Multi Media Acknowledgement With the integration of art and science, “Emotion” is an interactive sculptural installation designed to ‘mark’ the science museum. The sculpture actively changes from day to night. EMotion has become a commanding symbol for the Carnegie Science Center in the city of Pittsburgh.

The Edinburgh College of Art Connector Bridge The Edinburgh University Edinburgh, Scotland, UK Master Plan and Design

Published w/ Multi Media Acknowledgement As part of the new master plan for the ECA, a “connector bridge” was required to link the new Evolution House to the ECA’s main building and Art College.

In the heart of the historic city center, the connector is lightly inserted into the overall campus, framing views of the Edinburgh castle and providing a comfortable connection with the main building on campus.

The connector also provides an interactive platform for student work, display and experimentation. Here students can replace and reconfigure parts of the material enclosure to allow for exploration and expression of art, design and architecture.

Architecture, Branding and Master Plan

Founded in 1868, the Baxters Company remains a family business today. Bringing the history and heritage into the present, images of the Baxter’s company are brought to life with modern materiality and exhibition design process. This project emphasizes an educational user experience, both throughout the site and within the buildings and its amenities, all the while making the rich Baxters history “come alive” through out the site and context.

Woolworth Building Restoration & Renovation New York, NY

Exterior Renovation

The architect Cass Gilbert designed for Frank W. Woolworth and his company an office building in a free Gothic style. The building, completed in 1913, was the tallest structure in the world between 1913 and 1930. Its innovative steel frame was clad with some 400,000 square feet of a light colored and polychrome terra cotta.

The combination of steel frame and masonry cladding presented a series of challenges and interactions not entirely anticipated causing extensive breaking and cracking of terra cotta over time.

The restoration of the exterior included the elimination of internal stress patterns through cutting of joints, replacement of broken and cracked units with custom fabricated cast stone and the reconstruction of four small decorative flanking towers (called tourelles by Gilbert).

The restoration received at the time the chairman’s award of the New York Landmarks Conservancy and several industry awards such as the Concrete Industry.

Saratoga Springs Bank Interior Restoration Saratoga Springs, New York Interior Restoration and Redesign The Adirondack Trust Company (ATC) is located on the corner of Broadway and Church Street, in a building dating from 1916.

This significant renovation aimed at incorporating contemporary banking practices and needs into a historically significant space involved upgrading of the main banking hall and related spaces, along with areas directly adjacent. This also included the mezzanine, main entrance vestibule and secondary entrance on the northeast corner. While restoring the space new teller counters and officers stations were inserted.

111-115 Broadway Restoration & Renovation New York, NY

Restoration & Renovation

Award Winning Project The Trinity and United States Realty Buildings, located directly north of Trinity Church, were constructed in two phases between 1905 and 1906 to the designs of Francis H. Kimball.

After the preparation of an overall master plan, an extensive exterior restoration of the limestone of the lower floors was executed to restore a unified appearance.

Decorative and accent lighting was designed and installed for the exterior and the interior of the building.

On the interior both main lobbies were fully restored, new security desks installed and all elevator cabs were redesigned in the spirit of the buildings. For the Trinity Building a new two story entrance lobby was created on the rear of the building connecting the upper and lower lobbies with a new cast bronze staircase. All architectural detailing for the new lobby was inspired by the existing architecture.

Utah City and County Restoration & Renovation Salt Lake City, Utah

Restoration and Facility Upgrade

Utah Heritage Award The City and County Building in Salt Lake City, Utah, was completed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style in 1893 to the design of the architects Monheim, Bird and Proudfoot to house jointly the city and county government. This 160,000 square foot sandstone building is located in an active seismic area and posed two fundamental challenges: first, to convert a 100-year-old building into a 21st-century facility; second, to make the building seismically safe without losing the sense of history, the very fact that made saving the building important. This project is the first historic building in the US to incorporate base isolation.

This groundbreaking project has won numerous national and regional awards for restoration, renovation and the use of innovative technical solutions.

NY State Capitol Restoration & Renovation Albany, NY

Restoration & Renovation Master Plan

Award Winning Project The New York State Capitol Building in Albany was built between 1867 and 1899. The State of New York recognized the need for a comprehensive, multi-year restoration and renovation effort. A thorough multi-volume historic structures report was undertaken documenting the history, physical development, and current conditions of the entire building followed by the preparation of a masterplan.

This program outlined areas to be restored versus rehabilitated. Priorities were established and preliminary scopes of work were assembled for the efforts designated. With the work and priorities indentified, cost projections were prepared for a five year program.

New York State Capitol, NY

Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church Restoration & Renovation New York, NY

Restoration & Renovation Master Plan The Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church (MAPC) complex consists of three buildings erected at different times. The Sanctuary dates from the late 19th Century, while the Church House is early 20th Century. Both buildings have been the subject of renovations over time.

Following the recommendation of an earlier pre-existing master plan, a phased implementation was outlined. After the renovation of the Sanctuary and the design of new liturgical furniture, the infrastructure of the adjacent Church House was renovated and followed subsequently by renovation and redesign of residential units, nursery school and shelter and community spaces over the span of a decade.

Additionally there was work done to restore the sanctuary bell tower. The general approach was to assess the existing steel and masonry, dismantle and reconstruct assemblies on the original structure using original components when practicable, and fabricate and install new components in-kind when necessary.

5th Avenue Presbyterian Church Exterior Restoration New York, NY Restoration

National Preservation Award Built in the 1870's, the deteriorated brownstone exterior was restored and a reconstruction of the 50 ft spire on the north tower was reinstalled.

Bethesda Terrace, Central Park Restoration New York, NY Restoration

Bethesda Terrace (called the Water Terrace in the original Greensward plan by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux) is located in the middle of Central Park was constructed between 1859 and 1864 to the design of Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould. The underpass to the south end of the park has an unique suspended ceiling consisting of glazed encaustic tiles made by Minton. The terrace facing the lake and underpass were restored, granite stairs were reconstructed, masonry restored and missing ornaments, finials and portions of the delicate sculpture of flora and fauna that flank the stairs and that had been vandalized were re-carved and reinstalled using the original New Brunswick sandstone. Large flagpoles that were missing (gonfalons in the words of Vaux) were reconstructed in bronze and aluminum on the basis of original drawings and historic photographs.

GSA Peer Program

As part of the National GSA Peer program Theodore Prudon participated in the review of the proposed exterior restoration of the Mies van der Rohe-designed Everett M. Dirksen and John C. Kluczynski Courthouse Chicago Federal buildings. Attention focused on the preservation issues related to the repair and repainting of the original glass and metal curtain wall.

Product Development & Design

Bronze Pedestal Object Design The four foot high bronze pedestal was designed with a rotating Italian marble top to allow for the display and view sculptural objects from different vantage points. The bronze was finished with a statuary patina and highlights that accented the sculptural quality of the ornamental detail and its bronze castings.

Object Design Fireplace Screens

New custom designed screens reflecting the design of the spaces and fireplaces of their proposed location in design and detail and fabricated using traditional materials and fabrication techniques reflecting the craft of earlier periods.

Fireplace Tool Stand Object Design

This Fireplace Tool stand was designed to accommodate various antique fireplace tool sets. The stand used traditional materials and fabrication techniques that reflect the craft of the historic tool sets.

Bridging (I and II) Product Design Personal Collection Textile Work

Published w/ Multi Media Acknowledgement “Bridging� collections I and II, designed as a metaphor for the connecting of cultural divides, used a source of inspiration stemming from bridge structures. Careful consideration was given to the variation of proportioned scale differences. The collections are further enhanced by the range of coordinating textures and patterns which provide increased sensory stimulation.

Karastan Carpet Sensory Collection Best of NeoCon Silver Award Winner Award Winner Multi Media Published Project

The sense of touch is the only sense that is fully developed at the time of birth in the human species and the one sense that cannot survive without. Because textile / fiber products allure people to touch, the Sensory collection explored the qualities of touch both literal and visual. Synthetic fiber is made to look richer than wool with the intentional focus on textures with optimal tactile appeal.

Translations Karastan Carpet Collection Antron Design Excellence Award Best of Show , NeoCon Innovation Award Award Winner Multi Media Published Project Having never been done before, the Translations Collection transformed the current woven technology to produce a physically 3Dimesional product. Contrary to the typical carpet design process for manipulation of color pattern and texture, Translations uses one color, and instead, manipulates the inherent structure as pattern and 3Dimensionality to induce change.

Recognized for its innovative use of existing technology, when installed Translations delights over time with the discovery of new patterns shaped by light and shadow.

Using a high lustre Antron yarn, the colors were inspired by the engineered building materials such as glass, metal and concrete.

Karastan Carpet Undertones Finalist, ID Magazine Best of Year (BOY) Award Winner Multi Media Published Project “Undertones” continues to be inspired by the sense of touch. The rich use of texture and color is augmented by the ability for a comprehensive pattern and color customization capability which is rich and luxurious in its offering. Undertones, like the unique tone underlying the skin’s complexion, is a collection which provides deepened character and a strong base as a coordinating collection supporting several other Karastan offerings.

Lees’ Carpet Metafloor Collaborative Collection Best of NeoCon Innovation & Gold Award Award Winner Multi Media Published Project Noteworthy for its collaboration, Metafloor exposes nylon for a radical new construction that is edgy, elegant and affordable. This product development explored exposed the beauty of the inherent materials intrinsic to contemporary carpet manufacturing technologies.

ICF/Helikon Adante New York, NY Furniture Design The anytime, anyplace work ethic of today inspired this furniture line.

The need for a product which is dignified and supportive has resulted in these quietly detailed elements of plane, volume and surface. With integrated technology and the unfolding of components to stimulate discovery and delight, this series was designed with optimal flexibility for both the private office and the open plan.

Does yellow make people happy or does it evoke aggression?

Is blue really calming?

Do restaurants designed with red encourage guests to linger and eat more?

Bridging Art with Science, Spatial Color was an exciting project which obtained comprehensive color knowledge in the built environment.

This three room installation experiment documented behavioral reactions through the observational recording of visceral and the physiological human response as measured through empirical means. Studying three color immersions simultaneously, a comparative analysis of the colors relative to each other was also carefully conducted.

The Spatial Color Project was reported on the Today Show (NBC), Published in numerous magazines and books including Metropolis, Contract,, and “The Shape of Green: Aesthetics, Ecology, and Design� by Lance Hosey (Jun 2012)

SC COLLECTIVE Shashi Caan, Founding Partner Shashi Caan is an internationally recognized thought leader for progressive design. During her 25 years of design leadership, she has simultaneously developed the interlinked aspects of design practice, education and the coalescence of the global design community.

With her former experience as Associate Partner and Design Director with Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Gensler, she developed an exemplary background in Corporate Design. With the unique structure and the collaborative, research and people focused approach to supporting client and business success, the SC COLLECTIVE’s portfolio reflects a project diversity to include governmental, institutional, hospitality and education typologies. With a hands-on approach to all projects, Shashi has worked with such clients as Goldman Sachs, Aon PLC, Fidelity Investments, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Inver House Distillers, Dumfries and Galloway’s College, and Edinburgh College of Art. Whilst establishing an award winning practice, Shashi has also served as Chair of the Interiors Program at Parsons the New School of Design. In 2004 she was named US Designer of the Year and IFMA’s Educator of Year. In addition, Shashi is a two-term President and Fellow of the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (FoIFI). She is also an honorary Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia, the British Institute of Design and the American Society of Interiors. In 2010 she was granted an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts Degree from the NY School of Interior Design. A respected public speaker and design advocate, Shashi Caan holds two masters degrees (in Architecture & Industrial Design) from the Pratt Institute, and a BFA (w/ honors) from the Edinburgh University, in Scotland.

Theodore Prudon, Founding Partner Dr. Theodore Prudon BNA, FAIA, is an internationally renowned architect, licensed in multiple jurisdictions including Europe, and a leading expert on renovation and the preservation of modern architecture. He is a principal of the SC COLLECTIVE and is a partner of Prudon & Partners. Born in The Netherlands, Dr. Prudon was educated in architecture at the University of Delft and Columbia University where he also received his doctorate. Over the course of his forty year career, Dr. Prudon has worked on hundreds of significant projects and buildings such as the Woolworth and Chrysler Buildings in New York City, and the City and County Building in Salt Lake City and in Albany, NY. With experience in the management of distinguished architectural and design practices, he is well-versed in all aspects of the design/construction process. He has completed projects for the Adirondack Trust in Saratoga and with such academic institutions as Smith College, University of Utah and Columbia University. In addition he has worked on projects in the Netherlands, the UK, Poland and the Dominican Republic. Dr. Prudon teaches at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and Pratt Institute’s Programs for Sustainable Planning and Development. He is the author of numerous articles and a seminal book Preservation of Modern Architecture. He lectures extensively across the world and has been the subject of many interviews in print as well as digital media. He serves on the board of various professional and charitable organizations. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA), the Association for Preservation Technology (FAPT), and the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (FoIFI). He is also a member of the Dutch Royal Institute of Architects.
