The Chamber hosted its annual National Day Celebration Dinner on August 8 at Orchard Hotel Singapore. Minister for Manpower Tan Chuan Jin graced the event as Guest of Honour. The dinner was attended by 550 distinguished guests, including ambassadors, officials from various government departments, statutory boards and leaders from the business and art communities. In his National Day message which was screened during the dinner, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong thanked the pioneer generation for their hard work and concerted efforts in driving Singapore’s growth. He called upon students from Polytechnics and ITEs to always engage in learning, citing the ASPIRE Committee, chaired by MP Indranee Rajah, which is a government effort to assist polytechnic and ITE students to master specialised skills and attain relevant certifications according to their career needs. PM Lee also stressed that to ensure Singapore remains a land of opportunities, Singaporeans should not just judge an individual based on academic qualifications but also look at that individual’s strengths, contributions and character. He highlighted that to improve the living standards, Singapore needs to maintain a growth of 2.5-3.5 per cent in the next ten years. The government will also continue to employ state-of-the-art technology to transform Singapore into a Smart Nation. In his speech, President Thomas Chua pointed out that the older generation of Chinese entrepreneurs have made earnest efforts to contribute to society besides being preoccupied with their own business interests. In fact, many of these entrepreneurs who had started their business from scratch persevered despite facing a host of difficulties in the early years of industrialisation. As the structure of the Singapore economy continued to change and improve, Chinese entrepreneurs have seized opportunities, adapted to the environment, and moved along with the times. They built up a global business network with Singapore as home base.
