The above outstanding students were selected by Culture, Education & Community Affairs Committee Vice-Chairman Philip Kia and Council Member Wan Shung Ming. Recipients of the SCCCF Business and Chinese Studies scholarships from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) were: • • • •
Chong Tze Hin (Business Studies 2nd year) Nigel Seah Shao Jun (Accountancy 2nd Year) Lim Shi Hui (Chinese Studies Final year) Yang Suyu (Chinese Studies 2nd Year)
The above outstanding students were selected by the Chamber’s Secretary-General Tham Poh Cheong. Chan Chun Sing (back row, middle), then Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth & Sports and Senior Minister of State for Defence, and Chamber’s President Teo Siong Seng presented the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce Foundation (SCCCF) Business and Chinese Studies scholarships during the celebrations.
During the dialogue, Ms Sim highlighted the three main goals of the Bi-cultural Taskforce: To cultivate a new breed of bilingual talents and community leaders, further promote Chinese language, culture and traditional values and strengthen social cohesion. She also thanked the Chamber’s council members for their support towards the “Lee Kuan Yew Bilingualism Fund”. The Chamber’s council members also provided feedback and suggestions on bilingual education. The discussion revolved around topics like students’ views on learning their mother tongue, and that mother tongue learning tends to be highly dependent on a student’s environment such as family and school. Ms Sim also expressed the hope that community organisations could support the Bi-cultural Task Force to promote Bilingual education. After the session, Ms Sim toured the Singapore Chinese Chamber Institute of Business (SCCIOB) to gain a better understanding on its training for pre-school teachers as well as explore opportunities for the Ministry of Education to work with IOB. Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce Foundation (SCCCF) The Foundation selected outstanding students from the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University as recipients of the SCCCF scholarship. Recipients of the SCCCF Business and Chinese Studies scholarships from the National University of Singapore (NUS) were: • Jonathan Woo Kai En (Business Studies 2nd Year) • Timothy Koh Chuen Yu (Business Studies Final Year) • Leonard Yeo Zong You (Chinese Studies 1st Year) • Teo Jing Yu (Chinese Studies 3rd Year)
Recipients of the SCCCF Business scholarships from the Singapore Management University (SMU) were: • • • •
Francis Phuang (Economics Final Year) Guan Wenyi (Accountancy Final Year) Herman Cheong Wei Quan (Economics 2nd Year) Roy Pek Wen Long (Business Studies 3rd Year)
The above outstanding students were selected by Council Member Lee Peng Shu. In addition, Culture, Education & Community Affairs Committee member Wan Shung Ming selected the following outstanding Malay/Muslim students for the Yayasan Mendaki scholarship: • Siti Adriana Binte Muhamad Rasip (Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences, NUS) • Mohammad Saleh Bin Khaled Bagesher (Bachelor of Business, NTU) Chan Chun Sing, then Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth & Sports and Senior Minister of State for Defence, presented the students with their scholarship certificates at the Chamber’s Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations. In 2011, a scholarship recipient from SMU, Hoo Tun Kun, withdrew from school, and the scholarship was presented to Goh Zhong Huan (Business Management, 1st Year). NTU “Mayors’ Class” Gold Medal Since 2006, the Chamber has pledged two “Mayor’s Class Outstanding Student Award” worth $400 to the outstanding students under the Master in Public Administration and Master of Science in Managerial Economics programmes. The award is aimed at improving bilateral exchanges and fostering close relations. The 2011/2012 SCCCI Gold Medal was awarded to the following outstanding students: • Yuan Yuanzhen (Master of Science in Managerial Economics) • Liu Haitao (Master in Public Administration)
