Jamil Sheriff’s Five Gold Rings

22-24 September 2023

Welcome!

There’s a lot of variety in this year’s festival programme and the usual mix of well-established performers (but still moving forward!) and younger up-andcoming groups. There are some very impressive largish bands:

•To celebrate his 60th this year Alan Barnes has put together a 12-piece band playing music, arranged by Mark Nightingale, from the year of his birth 1959.

Take a look at the programme and I’m sure you’ll agree this is going to be an exceptional weekend of varied and exciting music.

•Saturday night should bring the house down with Jeremy Sassoon’s Ray Charles Project. His mixture of seventeen instrumentalists and singers will be perfect in the Spa Grand Hall.

•And to finish the festival who better than the ‘musicians, musician’, the legendary guitarist Jim Mullen with his nine-piece ‘Volunteers’ band.

And a farewell because this will be my last festival as director. It’s been a wonderful twenty years and I have met some amazing audience members and musicians. I would particularly like to compliment the Spa team and my wife Marian for all their

•And let’s not forget the wonderful charismatic vocalist Kate Peters celebrating the centenary of Ella Fitzgerald’s birth with an eighteen piece band of Northern musicians – who will demonstrate that we can match the best in London up here.

Over the weekend there will be lots of smaller, but very different. combos. And two great solo performers: Liane Carroll and Dave Newton.

Scarborough Castle, the sea and the beach await you – and a very welcoming Spa team.
