Fine dining in cultural ambiance The proximity to Hanover’s best-known stage, the GOP vaudeville theatre, the elegant design and a unique atmosphere all contribute towards Restaurant Gondel being a great meeting place for anyone who loves good food and drinks. Located in the 100-year-old Georgspalast, Hanover’s favourite restaurant combines its history with a contemporary design. TEXT: JESSICA HOLZHAUSEN  I  PHOTOS: RESTAURANT GONDEL

Restaurant Gondel convinces guests with a relaxed atmosphere and a modern 1960s ambiance. “At our restaurant, guests can experience outstanding cuisine at the juncture of avant-garde and tradition,” says Bobo Weinzierl, head of marketing and public relations at the GOP theatre Hanover. With an open kitchen and a glass-clad kitchen front, guests have a clear view of the kitchen team that turns fresh ingredients into unique and lively dishes. “Culinary art without frills,” says Bobo Weinzierl. One of the restaurant’s specialties is a ramen soup – the best in Hanover, says Weinzierl. At least one ramen soup on the changing menu recreates the original dish in exciting new ways – depending on the 42  |  Issue 80  |  November 2019

season: for example, with kale or asparagus. “During trade fairs, the Restaurant Gondel is Hanover’s Japanese hotspot.” Additionally, the restaurant offers many seasonal German dishes. The kitchen team sources produce solely from trusted sources. The restaurant, with its 100-year-old history, is an institution in Hanover. It was one of the first steel-frame construction buildings in Germany with visible Art Nouveau pillars. Still today, many guests who have experienced glorious times at the GOP theatre or the restaurant, continue to visit the Gondel – among them, former service or cloakroom staff. Restaurant Gondel is part of Hanover’s GOP, Germany’s favourite vaudeville the-

atre, with around 180,000 guests each year. The restaurant celebrates the joint history with a Gondel legends menu: “Inspired by the Gondel era of the 1950s and 1960s, it includes shrimp cocktail on ice, cold roast beef and the classic Fürst Pückler dessert, newly interpreted.” Restaurant Gondel also reconnects with its history by staging special events, like the ‘Welcome to Burlesque’ programme, Josephine Baker style. The close proximity to the GOP makes the Restaurant Gondel an ideal place for dinner before, or drinks after, a trip to the theatre. The restaurant has an international flair: “Artists often go to the Gondel bar, which makes them somewhat tangible to Gondel and GOP guests.” The restaurant is therefore ideal for anyone who wants to experience some real theatre atmosphere. Young and old, city dwellers and country people, bankers and office workers – it ends up being a memorable evening out for all. www.restaurant-gondel.de
