RUSSELL HOBBS - THE COMBINATION OF TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN

For decades, Russell Hobbs has stood for the combination of timeless design and advanced technology. The brand has made it its mission to develop stylish household appliances that make everyday life easier and more enjoyable. With this in mind, Russell Hobbs is launching the innovative Calm kettle.

The Russell Hobbs Calm Kettle represents a new era in the preparation of hot drinks by combining design and functionality. The frosted glass housing, adorned with stainless steel accents and copper-coloured details, immediately catches the eye. But it is the soft lighting that makes boiling water a real experience. As the water heats up, the light changes colour in harmonious transitions from orange to yellow, green, blue, violet and red. In the keep-warm cycle, the kettle lights up in a soft white.

The Calm Kettle offers far more than just visual appeal. With a modern digital display and intuitive touch screen, users can vary the temperature in 5°C steps from 40°C to 100°C, allowing them to prepare their drinks exactly

as they wish. Whether it's a delicate white or green tea or a strong black tea or coffee, the optimum temperature is always adjustable. The keep-warm function ensures that the water retains its temperature for up to 15 minutes, which offers noticeable convenience, especially in hectic moments.

A special highlight of the Calm kettle is the optional function of playing calming sounds at the touch of a button. These specially arranged sounds turn the process of bringing water to a boil into a short meditation, bringing relaxation.

The Quiet Boil technology is another sophisticated feature that characterises the Calm kettle. By splitting the rising air bubbles into many small ones, the boiling process becomes significantly quieter, creating a more pleasant user experience.

With its combination of timeless design and advanced technology, the Russell Hobbs Calm kettle is the ideal appliance for anyone looking for practical elegance. Whether it's during a busy day or a quiet tea ceremony, the Calm kettle offers the perfect blend of functionality and style.

JULIUS-K9®

BASED ON SCIENCE, EXPERIENCE & HEART

25 years ago, Julius-K9® was the first company in Europe to develop specialized protective gear such as bulletproof vests and stab-resistant clothing for military and police dogs. In wartime situations, dogs save human lives and often sacrifice their own lives for soldiers. Everyday heroes include dogs that assist people with disabilities.

In modern times, robots and artificial intelligence are being utilized in nearly every field, including as service dogs. We have also explored how a robot dog can be helpful to us.

The development team at Julius-K9® couldn’t resist and designed a harness for the Unitree GO-2 robot dog, which proved to be helpful in navigating during the tests. Following this, we attempted to compare something that truly cannot be compared: a real, flesh-and-blood service dog and the robot dog were deployed in a special situation where the owner has been missing both arms since birth. Bori must cope with this disability while living in perfect harmony in city life with her service dog, Líra.

Líra has been undergoing training by the Do as I Foundation for years and wears an essential Julius-K9® dog harness daily, which Bori puts on with her toes.

We assigned various tasks to the GO-2 robot dog and Líra, including maneuverability, following the owner, object retrieval, and playing together. Upon evaluating the results, it can be concluded that a robot dog could potentially be beneficial over time, including in assisting people with disabilities. For obvious reasons, Bori wouldn’t trade Líra for anything else. She believes the firsthand experience of individuals with mobility impairments is crucial for developing effective robots in the future. We thank Bori and Líra, as well as GO-2, for the enriching encounter.

Julius-K9® is eager to participate in future developments that build and support the extraordinary bond between dogs and humans.

The restaurant Alpenrose impresses with traditional Swiss dishes across the board.

AUTHENTIC PINOT NOIR FROM THE KAMPTAL

In the heart of the Austrian Kamptal, the Christoph Edelbauer winery creates 100% sustainable wines with traditional craftsmanship.

When you visit the Christoph Edelbauer winery amidst the hilly landscape of Langenlois, it becomes clear that its wines reflect the cycle of nature. In the unique setting of the Kamptal, which is characterised by the climatic interplay between the hot Pannonian basin in the east and the cool forest in the northwest, lies a valuable layer of brown earth that is crossed by fertile loess soil.

The individual vineyards, carefully selected by winemaker Christoph Edelbauer, stand out due to their different soil conditions and microclimates. The calcareous loess soils are perfect for Grüner Veltliner, while the Rieslings reflect the soils’ impressive minerality. The winery's poster child, however, is its Pinot noir, which fits perfectly with the climatic conditions and soils of the Kamptal. The cool climate throughout the year with its strong autumnal temperature differences between day and night gives the Pinot noirs on the three vineyards Ried Spiegel, Ried Käferthal and Ried Steinhaus their refreshing note, while the soils laced with limestone give them their complex, delicate and mineral character.

In order to protect the valuable soil for future generations, Christoph Edelbauer and his team rely on traditional craftsmanship and organic cultivation. The manageable size of the winery is designed so that every grape is picked by hand and every step of the management can be overseen by Christoph Edelbauer himself.

Christoph Edelbauer's wines only contain what nature gave them - nothing more and nothing less.

CULINARY DELIGHT WITH A CLEAR CONSCIENCE: THE VEGAN CREATIONS OF BUNTE BURGER

Bunte Burger, based in Cologne, champions creative veggie combinations over meat substitutes. Their vegan burger patties are clean and authentic, perfect as a main course with sides, in a burger or as a nutritious snack.

Since 2015, Bunte Burger has been enriching the culinary world with its organic vegan gourmet creations. All products are made without soy, gluten and palm oil and are mostly made from vegetables, legumes and fine organic spices. Without any additives, flavour enhancers and preservatives, these organic vegan patties are designed not to mimic the taste of meat but to offer an entirely new experience for your taste buds - and they deliver on that promise.

The company, which began as a food truck but now includes a restaurant, a catering service and a product line for organic retailers, was founded by childhood friends Ulrich Glemnitz and Dr Mario Binder. "Our vision is a future where people are aware of the profound importance of a healthy planet," Dr Binder says. "We want to live in a world where business operates in harmony with ethical values. That's why we're a member of the Economy for the Common Good and published our common good balance sheet and report in 2023."

REVOLUTIONARY FOOD START-UPS: THE FUTURE OF NUTRITION STARTS NOW

Have you ever tried plain water that tastes like sweet lemonade or a delicious tuna sandwich without the fish? These innovations, brought to life by the start-ups Air Up and BettaF!sh, are pioneering more sustainable nutrition options, supported by EIT Food, Europe's largest innovation network.

Founded by the European Union, EIT Food (European Institute of Innovation & Technology) is Europe's largest hub for transforming the food system towards healthier, more sustainable nutrition for all.

EIT Food plays a versatile role in this transformation, showcasing exciting ideas from successful start-ups, the latest agricultural innovations and numerous free educational resources. Since 2018, their co-location centre in Freising, near Munich, Germany, has been a central point for nurturing these innovations under the motto: Ideas from Freising for Europe. Today, EIT Food coordinates activities in 10 countries from there, but with additional hubs, it‘s active in all European countries.

SUPPORTING RENOWNED START-UPS

EIT Food has already supported over 350 start-ups, many of which are now well-known. One notable success is Air Up in Munich, which originated from a bachelor’s thesis.

Air Up has developed a unique drinking bottle that enhances plain water to taste as if it’s flavoured, without sugar or artificial additives. The bottles feature special pods at the neck, which release scents that trick the brain into perceiving flavours, even though only water is consumed. Many believe that taste comes solely from the tongue and taste buds, but Air Up shows that our sense of smell plays a dominant role. The scent pods come in a range of flavours, and Air Up's bottle invention has already gained popularity, particularly amongst school kids, as a healthy alternative to sugary drinks.

Air Up has received an award from EIT Food, helping them expand into the American market in partnership with PepsiCo. Jérôme Hamacher, Managing Director of the EIT Food Co-Location Centre in Freising, states: "We connect people across Europe to bring the latest ideas for sustainable and healthy nutrition onto our plates faster than ever."

The support from the EIT Food network has helped Air Up grow from a small start-up to a major name in healthy beverages.

BETTAF!SH: SUSTAINABLE FISH ALTERNATIVES

Berlin-based BettaF!sh is another standout start-up within the EIT Food network. They offer an environmentally friendly and healthy alternative to traditional fish products with their plant-based ‘TU-NAH’, and have already been recognised as one of the top ten innovations at the world's leading food fair, Anuga. TU-NAH is made from European seaweed and fava beans, is 100% plantbased, protein-rich and free from soy or wheat - yet perfectly replicates the appearance and taste of real tuna, which is often overfished.

BettaF!sh not only promotes sustainable eating but also supports ocean conservation and offers alternative income sources for fishing communities through seaweed farming.

"The EIT Food network has been extremely helpful, especially the EIT Food HIVE platform and online sessions, which provided valuable insights into impact measurement," the BettaF!sh team shares. "Within a few months, we were connected with a corporate partner in the food service sector looking to improve their sustainability record. The financial support from EIT Food also enabled us to participate in excellent networking and trade events."

AN UNBEATABLE NETWORK FOR SUSTAINABLE NUTRITION

EIT Food's extensive network of over 166 partners accelerates innovations in the food

system, enabling quicker implementation of value chains and digitalisation processes. "We provide practical support, especially for SMEs and agriculture, to speed up processes," explains Hamacher. As a pan-European network, EIT Food connects experts across all European countries.

"EIT Food builds bridges to bring innovations from regional innovation centres to Europe. Our strong presence in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland can thus offer young founders in the food or agriculture sectors direct pathways and partnerships in other EU countries as well as the UK. This helps innovators quickly reach the right markets with the right partners, so their products for healthier and more sustainable nutrition also reach consumers in supermarkets," summarises Hamacher. Studies by EIT Food clearly show that consumers, especially the younger generation, want much more transparency in food production and content.

EIT Food encourages consumers to try these innovative products and become part of a movement that promotes healthier and more sustainable nutrition options. The economy is also invited to support the necessary transformation of the food system by backing these innovative start-ups.

We’re definitely on board!

Unser starkes Standbein in Deutsch-

ROXANA SAMADI “I WANT TO REMIND PEOPLE THAT, AT OUR CORE, WE ARE THE SAME”

German actress Roxana Samadi is best known for her roles in Tatort, Para – Wir sind King and many more. For her latest project, Freiheit im Herzen, she has swapped being in front of the camera for taking over as the documentary’s director. She speaks to Discover Germany, Switzerland & Austria about the significance of this socially relevant documentary, her Iranian roots, and more.

Discover Germany: How did you become an actress? Has this always been your dream profession?

Roxana Samadi: “I actually couldn't imagine doing anything else when I was a child. I think I always had an inner urge to imagine situations that were not connected to my own reality because that always broadened my horizons and changed the way I looked at the world.”

Discover Germany: What has been your favourite role to play so far?

Roxana Samadi: "I'm not sure if there's one specific role that stands out, but I particularly love projects where you have the time and space to create a character from head to toe. This includes shaping how the character moves, speaks, dresses, and behaves. These are the kinds of projects where you collaborate closely with all the other departmentscostume, makeup, and of course, the director

- right from the early stages. When all the layers of filmmaking come together like this, it truly allows the character to be fully realized. It requires a lot of time and effort, which is why not every production works this way, but when it does, the result is truly magical."

Discover Germany: Your latest project, as a director, is the documentary Freiheit im Herzen. What is it about? What social issues are addressed in it?

Roxana Samadi: “The movie was a reaction to what I witnessed in Germany after the death of Jina Mahsa Amini in Tehran in 2022. That event sparked an uprising across Iran, starting in the region of Kurdistan, with the goal of toppling the Islamic Republic. The reaction of the diaspora all over the world was incredible to see. All of a sudden, Iranians outside the country came together, putting their differences aside and standing up for the people fighting and dying in Iran. I felt

I had to capture what I was witnessing on the streets of Germany. The uprising was not just any uprising; it was the first feminist revolutionary movement in the world. In the name of ‘women, life, freedom,’ men and women, queer people, old and young, even children, people of different religions and ethnicities, risked their lives, hoping they could bring down the mullah regime. In times of social media, the online representation of that movement was incredibly helpful. It gave people outside the country the chance to amplify the voices of those inside and to demand action from their politicians. Unfortunately, that didn’t last long. The film also shows how, over time, the diaspora began to argue and divide itself again. The people in Iran were executed and murdered, causing the protests to become quieter and the movement to not result in a revolution.

What remains, however, is a society that has learned that those outside hear and see them and are ready to fight alongside them, and an outside society that proved that, once they put their egos and differences aside, it is possible to stand together as a force that can achieve a lot.”

Discover Germany: What do you want to achieve with the documentary? What’s the background?

Roxana Samadi: “I want to remind people that, at our core, we are the same. We come from the same place. We create them ourselves. Once we realize that, we can see each other and our struggles, and because of that, we can come together. And once we find each other, we have a power that no single person can have. That power is not the result of anger and hate, but it can be built on love— on love for each and every individual—and it can grow and spread through empathy and respect. Based on those principles, a world in which a woman is worth the same as a man or a nonbinary person is possible. A world

in which your religion, ethnicity, or cultural upbringing doesn’t make you any less of a human. Based on love and respect, a world in which 'women, life, freedom' is the foundation is possible.”

Discover Germany: What was it like being behind the camera as a director?

Roxana Samadi: “It felt very natural because I didn’t think of myself as the director. I just felt the urge to capture the moment, and from that, I acted accordingly. This meant buying a camera, asking people to be my pro-

tagonists, finding partners, learning how to edit, and finding a composer and a sound designer. I took every single step one at a time, and all of a sudden, I had a finished movie. It was painful and exhausting, but it taught me so much, and now when I look back at it, I don’t know how I did it anymore. I think that’s part of the magic.”

Discover Germany: What else is planned for 2024/2025? What can we look forward to?

Roxana Samadi: “At the beginning of September, I will be at the Toronto International Film Festival to attend the World Premiere of Seven Days. It is a drama based on the stories of many women’s rights activists in Iran. An Iranian human rights activist, who has been granted a seven-day medical furlough, must decide whether to escape to freedom with her family or return to prison to continue her fight for equality and democracy. I had the honor of working together with my father on this project. This was an experience that I will never forget and that enriched my life immensely. Collaborating with him, watching him tell this story from the deepest place of his heart and soul, and literally risking his life moved and inspired me. The film will most likely be in German cinemas at the beginning of 2025."

Discover Germany: And last but not leastwhat wishes and dreams do you have for the future?

Roxana Samadi: “I hope to be able to continue telling stories. I think that is a beautiful way to connect people. When I ask myself what our purpose is on this planet, I come to the conclusion that, having grown up as privileged as I did, I feel a responsibility to promote positivity rather than engage in conflict and negativity. Whatever position I tell them from, whether I act, direct, or hold a camera, it’s the stories that matter, and I wish to tell the ones that connect us with each other, that inspire us, that give hope, that show realities that are often not seen in society, and that are honest.”

Freiheit im Herzen will be shown at a renowned German film festival in October. Follow Roxana Samadi on Instagram for updates: @samadiroxana

– A GUIDE TO MUNICH'S  OKTOBERFEST 2024

The Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, is one of the world's largest and most famous beer festivals, drawing millions of visitors from around the globe to experience Bavarian culture, traditions, and of course, a hearty dose of beer.

TEXT: NANE STEINHOFF
Photo: München Tourismus, Werner Böhm

The annual festival is a celebration of Bavarian traditions, filled with music, dancing, great food, and a variety of amusement rides for the entire family. Let's delve into the rich history and exciting highlights of Oktoberfest in Munich so you don’t have to plan your visit and can dive in straight away when you visit.

HISTORY

The origins of Oktoberfest date back to October 12, 1810, when the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig (who later became King Ludwig I) married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to celebrate the royal wedding on the fields in front of the city gates, now known as Theresienwiese (Therese's meadow). The festivities included horse races, beer, and food stands, marking the first Oktoberfest. Over the years, the festival grew in popularity and expanded to include various amusement rides and attractions, becoming the iconic event that it is today which attracts around 7.2 million revellers annually.

The event’s name ‘Oktoberfest’ might be confusing to some as the two-week festival always starts in mid-September. According to the festival’s website, the reason behind the name is quite straightforward: "Because the weather in October was usually already cooler and the days are significantly shorter, one let the Oktoberfest begin in September. Since 1872, (it has) always (been held) on the first Saturday after September 15 until the first Sunday in October."

WHAT TO WEAR

Attending Oktoberfest is a unique and exciting experience, and one of the most important aspects of preparing for the event is choosing the right outfit. Traditional Bavarian attire, known as ‘Tracht’, is highly encouraged at Oktoberfest and adds to the overall festive atmosphere. Oktoberfest is a vibrant and lively festival that celebrates Bavarian culture and traditions. Here’s a guide on what to wear at Oktoberfest.

Dirndl for Women: A dirndl is the traditional dress worn by women at Oktoberfest. It typically consists of a bodice, blouse, full skirt, and apron. Dirndls come in a variety of colours, styles, and lengths, so you can choose one that suits your taste. Make sure to tie the bow of your apron on the right side if you are single, and on the left side if you are taken or married.

Lederhosen for Men: Lederhosen are the traditional leather breeches worn by men at Oktoberfest. They are usually accompanied by a checkered shirt, suspenders, knee-length socks, and Haferl shoes. Lederhosen come in various shades of brown and can be paired with a trachten shirt or a traditional shirt for a complete look.

To complement your outfit, consider wearing a traditional Bavarian hat, such as a fedora or Tyrolean hat for men, and a floral wreath or hat for women. Adding accessories like a

feathered hat pin, traditional jewellery, or a cute handbag can enhance your overall look. Comfortable shoes are a must for Oktoberfest, as you will be walking and standing for extended periods. Traditional Haferl shoes for men and flats or comfortable boots for women are good choices. Avoid wearing stilettos or brand-new shoes, as they can be uncomfortable on the festival grounds.

While dressing in traditional Bavarian attire is encouraged, it’s important to note that wearing costumes or outfits that mock or misrepresent Bavarian culture is frowned upon. Stick to authentic Tracht to show respect for the festival and its traditions.

WHAT TO DRINK

Oktoberfest, the world's largest beer festival held annually in Munich, Germany, is famous for its lively atmosphere, traditional Bavarian cuisine, and of course, a wide selection of delicious beverages. While beer is undoubtedly the star of the show at Oktoberfest, there are also many other traditional German drinks to enjoy during the festivities.

Of course, beer is the undisputed king of Oktoberfest. Visitors can enjoy a variety of traditional German beers, including Märzen, Helles, and Weißbier. The beer served at Oktoberfest must conform to the Reinheitsgebot, the German beer purity law, which stipulates that beer can only contain water, barley, and hops. Some of the most popular breweries at Oktoberfest include Hofbräu, Augustiner, Paulaner, and Löwenbräu. Radler,

a refreshing beverage made by mixing beer with lemonade or soda, is a popular choice for those looking for a lighter alternative to traditional beer. Radler is the perfect drink for a hot day at Oktoberfest, offering a crisp and citrusy flavour that is both thirst-quenching and easy to drink.

For many attendees, one of the highlights of Oktoberfest is enjoying traditional German beer while revelling in the festive atmosphere. When it comes to what to drink at Oktoberfest, there are a few key options that stand out, with the most iconic being the ‘mass’. The ‘mass’ (pronounced mahss) is a staple of Oktoberfest, and it refers to a one-litre (approximately 33.8 ounces) glass mug of beer. This hefty mug is a quintessential part of the Oktoberfest experience and is often adorned with the brewery's logo or the festival's official design. The most common type of beer served in a mass at Oktoberfest is the Märzen, a malty and slightly sweet amber lager that is brewed specifically for the festival.

For those who want to keep a clear head, the Apfelschorle is a non-alcoholic drink made by mixing apple juice with sparkling water. This refreshing beverage is a great choice for visitors who want to stay hydrated and enjoy a fruity drink without the alcohol content. Apfelschorle is commonly enjoyed throughout Germany and is a popular option at Oktoberfest for those looking for a non-alcoholic alternative.

When it comes to enjoying your drinks at Oktoberfest, it's important to remember that the

mass is not just a vessel for beer but also a cultural symbol. The proper way to hold and drink from a mass is with one hand on the handle and the other supporting the bottom of the glass. Prost (cheers) is the traditional German toast that is heard throughout Oktoberfest, and clinking glasses with a hearty prost is a must-do when enjoying your beer.

WHAT TO EAT

Oktoberfest is not just about beer - it's also a celebration of Bavarian culture, music, and food. One of the highlights of Oktoberfest is the delicious traditional German cuisine that is served at the festival. From hearty meats to sweet treats, there is something for everyone to enjoy at Oktoberfest. No trip to Oktoberfest is complete without indulging in a giant, salty pretzel, for example. These warm, soft pretzels are the perfect snack to enjoy

A proper Bavarian meal - veal sausage, pretzel and a bear. Photo: Photo: München Tourismus, G Standl

while wandering around the festival grounds. Be sure to pair them with some mustard or Obatzda, a creamy cheese dip made with ripe Camembert cheese, butter, onions, and spices. It has a rich and tangy flavour that pairs perfectly with beer.

Of course, Oktoberfest is a sausage lover's paradise. From bratwurst to currywurst, there are a variety of delicious sausages to choose from. Whether you prefer your sausage grilled or fried, you are sure to find a tasty option at one of the many food stalls at Oktoberfest. For meat lovers, the traditional Schweinshaxe (roasted pork knuckle) is sure to be a highlight. The pork knuckle is roasted to perfection, resulting in crispy skin and tender, flavourful meat. Schweinshaxe is often served with sauerkraut and potato dumplings, making it a hearty and satisfying meal.

Other dishes that should be tried are Leberkaese, a traditional Bavarian meatloaf, potato salad, and schnitzel, a breaded and fried cutlet of meat. As dessert, roasted almonds or a slice of Apfelstrudel, or apple strudel, is a great way to end your culinary Oktoberfest journey.

WHAT TO DO

While the festival kicks off with a parade featuring traditional Bavarian costumes, marching bands, and horse-drawn beer wagons – a highlight for the entire family, the Oktoberfest has several carnival rides and attractions on offer for all ages. From roller coasters to bumper cars and Ferris wheels, the Oktoberfest is, at its core, a fun amusement park. Of course, the beer tents are highlights not to be missed. Here, visitors from all over the world

drink beer, laugh and dance on the tables until the early hours. Each tent represents a different brewery.

Another highlight of the Oktoberfest in Munich is the traditional ‘Trachten- und Schützenzug’, a costume parade that sees thousands of participants dressed in traditional Bavarian clothes. For those seeking to really feel Bavaria’s essence and learn more about its culture, this is a great event to visit.

Munich also has a lot more to offer for visitors, such as the Cuvilliés Theatre. Photo: München Tourismus, Vittorio Sciosia

TRAIL RUNNING IN REIT IM WINKL - LIMITLESS TRAILS IN THE BORDER TRIANGLE

An officially certified snow hole in winter - a colossal mountain arena for epic trail running in summer.

TEXT & PHOTOS: NORBERT EISELE-HEIN I TRANSLATION: NANE STEINHOFF

Early in the morning, the thick morning haze still clings to the fir tree tops. Extracts an intoxicating breeze that our lungs eagerly absorb. The trail climbs steeply up to the rustic Hindenburg hut. Your pulse is already racing, your temples are pounding in time with your steps. The sun gains strength and tears entire shreds out of the cotton wrap. Individual rays wander through the magical forest. Gravelly serpentines guide us through a beguiling fantasy film that tastes like a bag of cough drops. The first alpine pastures mark the tree line. Shortly before the Straubinger Hütte we open the gate to the steel blue sky. The crack of the sun hits us head-on, the last remnants of fog evaporate as if in fast motion. Marsh marigolds, cobbler's nails and gentians flash like small light bulbs in the backlight. We take the last steps to the terrace exactly on the BavarianTyrolean border. The view of the summit tempts you to indulge. The bold cutting edge of the Großvenediger shines above the numerous barns. The completely assembled, still deeply snow-covered Zillertal Alps shine like freshly bleached Hollywood beauties. The Kitzbühler Horn rises in front of it. The vertical rock faces of the Wildes Kaiser press in. In contrast, the gentle, green Chiemgau Alps seem almost tame. Wow, what a start.

But let's turn back the wheel of time for a moment: it cost a whole 10 German marks or 70 Austrian shillings to take part in the Reit im Winkler three-country high-altitude hike in 1970. Under the patronage of the then mayor Hagl of Reit im Winkl, you could choose between three routes 18, 29 or 35 kilometres and up to 2,500 metres in altitude can be selected. Alpine clubs, fire departments, mountain rescue services and medical crews from the border triangle of Bavaria, Tyrol and Salzburg jointly organized and looked after the fabulous route. The starting signal sounded in the nearby Seegatterl and strung together top trails, beguiling panoramic peaks and monumental mountain trails like pearls on a chain. Dürrnbachhorn, Winklmoosalm, Steinplatte, Fellhorn - the hikers and runners had to complete an alpine summit program. And even though the three-country tour was held for the last time in 2006, it provides us trail runners with a tailor-made template. The perfect blueprint and inspiration, so to speak, for a week of running with howling calves and an almost inflationary panorama factor.

Reit im Winkl is actually considered an officially certified snow hole. As the saying goes in meteorological jargon, “the phenomenon of cold air lakes” causes increased snowfall. And indeed. The Maserer Pass often forms the border in winter. Green dominates on this side. Beyond the microclimate of Bavarian Siberia, winter sports enthusiasts have to put on snow chains for the last 10 kilometres and there is often a powder alarm. Since Rosi Mittermaier won a lot of precious metal at the Olympics in Innsbruck in 1976, the Winklmoosalm and Reit im Winkl have been a household name in winter sports. But where skiers click their tongues because of the many black slopes in winter, trail runners will of course also find plenty of first-class trails in summer. The routes wind their way around the town centre over more than 1,000 metres in altitude to the peaks of the DreiländerHöhenweg. Wind over the Heutal to behind the Sonntagshorn, the highest mountain in the Chiemgau Alps. Many loops take a detour to the Kaiserwinkl on Tyrolean territory.

We sip an apple spritzer and almost have to force our way away... - because at the Straubinger Hütte the terrace slobber quickly gets the better of you. The locals call our afternoon programme ‘Om ummi’. That section of the Dreiländer-Höhenweg that leads to Steinplatte. ‘Om ummi’ is neither Latin nor Japanese, but a Chiemgau dialect and simply means ‘on top’ in standard German. The rock interspersed alpine meadow trail zigzags uphill downhill. Leads through mountain pine fields between 1,400 and 1,600 metres above sea level. In between, Almrausch flowers in rich magenta and

violet-blue gentians provide a magnificent splash of colour. The last 400 extremely steep meters to the summit of the 1,869 metre high Steinplatte are extremely tough.

The mix of standardized gravel and asphalt sets our thighs on fire. But the effort is worth it. The nearby Loferer Steinberge in Salzburg territory, freshly covered in fresh snow, look as monumental as the Rocky Mountains. We deliberately walk in wide bends down to the Winklmoosalm. This is the only way we can reach the 1,776-metre high Dürrnbachhorn with the last grains. Our thighs gasp alarmingly on the narrow trail, especially when we have to jump up the many rocky steps. The 600 meters of altitude gave us the rest, but the 360-degree panorama more than compensated for it. The deep view of the lake trilogy of Weitsee, Mittersee and Lödensee,

which sparkle like emeralds from the valley, gives you goosebumps. The panoramic view of the Berchtesgaden Alps, especially the top dogs Watzmann and Hochkalter, increases our happiness at the summit. We high-five briefly and just nod silently. Back at the Winklmoosalm we take the shuttle bus back to Reit im Winkl. Enough for today.

After this big bang, we'll take the second step a little more leisurely and take on the Three Lakes circuit. We walk northwards over extensive, green ridges and mountain ridges. For now, you can only see the beaches of the Bavarian Riviera from above. On the way back to the south bank of the Weitsee there is no stopping. We kick our running slippers across the beach and throw ourselves into the waterrunning and swimming in such a postcard idyll complement each other wonderfully.

Our last tour starts directly behind the Saint Pankratius Church. A sandy trail, repeatedly interspersed with steps, leads uphill opposite the Hausbachfallsteig, the first TÜV-certified via ferrata in Germany. To the right of the waterfall, mountaineers hang on the ropes and struggle over the bulbous rock bulge on ladders and steps. To the left, our soles crunch over small pebbles. The exemplary signposted path through the shady mixed forest leads us to the 1061 meter high Wetterkreuz summit. We continue trotting along the Alpin Chiemseeblick premium hiking trail. After just a few turns of the road it becomes clear what premium means. The beautiful trail loops do not saw through the panorama, but rather reveal it very carefully. The majestic landscape feels not conquered, but flattered. He has earned the golden crown on the signposts. The predicate may sound awkward, but that's apparently how it has to be with titles of nobility.

“It was anything but easy,” says Florian Weindl, head of the tourism office in Reit im Winkl. The German Hiking Institute, which is responsible for the certification of the 12.4 kilometer loop, requires an extensive catalogue of

criteria to be met. It records the strengths and weaknesses of the hiking trails as objectively as possible. This is done not least so that hiking enthusiasts can find routes that suit their preferences as easily as possible.

“The path format, the user-friendly signage, the landscape, rustic inns, culturally interesting things and possible noise emissions –everything is put to the test,” says Mr. Weindl.

We think Premium is great. We walk almost 950 meters above the wildly romantic Hutzenalm and the beautifully situated Stoibenmöseralm through an opulent, almost kitschy local film. Cows stand like statues on the steep slope. Only their jaws move as they meditatively chew the flower-strewn meadow. An alpine farmer sharpens his scythe and mows the steep stream bank by hand. In the background, the spikes of the Wilder Kaiser sparkle golden. Down in the village, fiery red geraniums shine in the flower boxes. The guild symbols on the maypole are cleverly backgrounded by fluffy clouds. Truly, such a white and blue overdose releases a lot of happiness hormones - even if your thighs burn badly after three days.

Tip for runners:

The Mountainman is currently taking place on October 4th - 5th, 2024. There are five routes to choose from with a maximum of up to 73 kilometres and 3,245 demanding metres in altitude.

RELAXCOACHING RCS – FUTURE OF COACHING

Through its groundbreaking approach, the innovative start-up RelaxCoaching RCS solves a common challenge faced by those who prioritise a conscious and healthy lifestyle.

With RCS, learning and coaching while relaxing is possible – whether on the train, on the plane, at home or during a break at the office –you can continue the day refreshed and informed.

The focus is on efficiency because it is simply difficult to learn when you are stressed or tired. A relaxed state however enables you to learn both efficiently and sustainably. Two stress-causing problems are therefore solved: lack of time and pressure to perform. "With RCS, you no longer have to choose between relaxation and further training," explains RCS founder Adil Abdulkadir.

RCS has developed an audiovisual technology that uses specific light and audio frequencies to stimulate the brain and put it in a relaxed and receptive state. Combined with music and coordinated coaching and learning content, an effective and at the same time relaxing learning experience is created.

The final prototype, consisting of light glasses, an app and initial coaching content, was made possible with the help of various grants from associations, state and federal ministries. RCS is thus attracting great interest and already has strong cooperation partners, such as Dirk Kreuter, CopeCart GmbH and newboxes GmbH.

“By the end of 2024, we are looking for investors who share our vision of more successful, more relaxed and, above all, happier people, in order to launch the first devices on the market at the end of 2025.”

PORTALMARKETING:

AUF B2B-MARKTPLÄTZEN FINDEN

ANBIETER

Manche Firmen publizieren sogar spezielle Landingpages.

Also z.B. ‚Drehteile Firmen‘, ‚Frästeile Firmen‘, ‚Leiterplatten Firmensuche‘, ‚Pulverbeschichtung

Bailaho ist mehrfach bei hochrangigen BusinessAwards ausgezeichnet. U.a. Best of InnovationspreisIT, Industriepreis Best of, Hauptpreisträger und mehrfacher Preisträger beim Mittelstandsprogramm, Finalist bei den European Business Awards.

Firmensuche‘, ‚Hydraulikzylinder B2B‘, etc.

CSMM – THE EFFECT OF RESILIENT ARCHITECTURE

A unique way of combining innovation and vision with sustainability in planning and consulting, as well as the revitalization of existent structures with an efficient handling of resources mark architecture and consulting firm CSMM.

"Our basic architectural approach is to achieve the optimum with minimal intervention and effort", explains architect and managing director Malte Tschörtner, “this applies above all to revitalization projects for existing structures, which now make up the majority of our project list.” CSMM sees the future of architecture in the adaptive reuse of existing buildings: “We believe in resilient buildings which can extend both their lifespan and usability, maximise their functionality and minimise their environmental impact.” For office architecture in particular, the way to get there is through New Work – an omnipresent term nowadays, as firms and companies try and coax their employees back to the office since hybrid work has become the norm in modern work models.

Malte Tschörtner studied in both Munich and Milan and initially gained several years of experience in large architectural firms before deciding to dedicate himself to his own field as an architect. Since 2010, he has been the

managing partner of CSMM together with Timo Brehme, Sven Bietau and Reiner Nowak. The planning and consulting firm has grown steadily over the past 15 years and today counts a team of over 100 employees at five locations in Germany as well as in Warsaw.

“We are particularly proud of our planning process,” says the architect, “investing time and effort in a 'phase zero' is not a given these days – but most of our long-standing clients have come to appreciate our holistic approach.” In the near future, AI will play an

increasingly important role in the analysis phase. The processing of data on user needs and requirements for the building can thus be accelerated and refined right from the start and provide a more complete picture of the planning objective."

Sustainable building and, most significantly, adaptive reuse concepts are currently at the top of the CSMM planning list: Negotiations with the municipal authorities of Berlin and Munich concerning large-scale revitalization projects are underway this very minute.

"For us architects, the focus lies with the spectrum of future users and the effect that architectural spaces have on us all," explains Malte Tschörtner. This is why CSMM always takes a cross-sector approach to architectural design – for both new buildings and adaptive reuse, for flexible buildings and mixed-use concepts, or generally within the framework of holistic planning and consulting models: The CSMM claim "Architecture Matters" is expressed in all their projects.

Cultural Plots

Right next to one of the most significant wall memorial sites, an unlikely oasis combines Berlin’s past and present local culture.

During the pandemic years, the daily walk practically became doctor’s orders and for some Berliners, this habit has since grown into a treasured routine. Obvious destinations of course were the big parks and the river Spree embankments. In those parts with little access to green and water however, many Berliners simply started walking allotments and community gardens. It was due to the global glitch of the pandemic that citizens thus stumbled upon a part of local history and culture dating back to prewar times.

The working Berliner has always been in need of a little patch of green to call their own, as to counterpart say the view from dingy ‘Hinterhaus’ flats onto inner courtyards which, around the 1900s, often consisted of nothing more than an air shaft with garbage cans, the respective noise and smells forming part of the ambience. Beyond the need for greenery and fresh air, the nourishing aspects of a small piece of land grew downright existential in times of depression and war, when a few selfplanted potatoes, carrots and cabbages could literally save an entire family. It is said that during WWII, Berliners even moved out of their bombed houses into the little allotment shacks called “Datsche”, a tongue-in-cheek colloquial term derived from the Russian word “dacha”, as in ‘country house’.

Nowadays, under less grim circumstances, the main attraction of the much soughtafter plots is the simple luxury of a closeby retreat, where peace, greenery and lush flower beds are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike, while a craft beer at the garden cafe allows for diving head-on into Berlin local culture.

The Bornholm gardens I+II are run by a lively community and known to take part in city-wide festivals such as the ‘artspring artwalk’ or the Fête de la Musique. Built on a former landfill in 1896 by wild settlers who were growing vegetables for pure survival, the area is set right by the Bösebrücke at Bornholmer Straße, a site of more recent historical fame: It was right here where the first crowds came pouring in from the East, that night when the wall came down on November 9th 1989. At this point, the allotments had long suffered a half life marked as “border area” ever since 1961, with multiple restrictions: Garden ladders for example were strictly verboten due to the fact that they could have been used as escape tools for climbing the wall.

Today, a welcoming and liberal community feeling marks the colourful gardens with their multitude of trees and flowers on lush display. Just like all over the rest of Berlin, there are many bee-friendly projects underway, and even if there is no special

event or concert to attend, a stroll through the leafy allotments after visiting the Bornholmer Straße memorial site will leave you both inspired and refreshed. If you happen to come by in September, you may even catch the local harvest festival.

Are Germans secret royalists?

As we all know, the country got rid of its kings and queens a long time ago. Staunch republicans, we are. Yes, indeed. If it wasn’t for the fruit and vegetable monarchies that stubbornly persist in the Republic of Germany. I wonder, is there any other country with so many queens of all things green? In rural regions up and down the country, a whole range of fruits and veg have their female rulers who represent and promote the local produce for a year before they pass on crown and sceptre to whoever is selected next. Wine, asparagus, potato, apple, plum, kale, cherries – you name it, there’s a reigning queen.

Among the most popular and well-known are wine queens and each of Germany’s 13 winegrowing regions has one of them. In 1931, the Palatinate (‘Pfalz’) was the first German wine region to crown its own queen. There is also a German Wine Queen which is traditionally elected each year in the Palatinate town of Neustadt an der Weinstraße from among the individual wine regions’ queens. The election process is quite a comprehensive affair and the competing local queens have to go through different rounds of assessment to prove that they’re fit for their one-year term of office, representing and promoting German wine at trade fairs, wine festival and other events. Jointly with two wine princesses, by the way, because, obviously, every queen needs to come with princesses.

All the more shocking then for some that it was in the Palatinate, the cradle of wine queens, where a republican uprising has recently been in the making: The ‘Verein Pfalzwein’ –Palatinate Wine Association – announced that it would abolish its queen. Instead, a male or female ambassador for Palatinate wine should be elected instead – with the official title of ‘PfalzWeinBotschafterin’ (female) or ‘PfalzWeinBotschafter’ (male). In case you’re wondering, yes, those are madeup, Instagram-friendly terms, random capitalisations within words are not (yet) in the book of German spelling.

A representative of the association explained the dethronement with the ‘Pfalz’ wanting to be perceived as a “modern wine region”. And apparently, there’s no room for queens anymore then. This pursuit of modernity was followed by a huge public discussion in the Pfalz region because turns out people –and local politicians – like their wine queen. One very outspoken critic was the mayor of Neustadt who apparently wasn’t at all keen on the idea of an ambassador, particularly a male one. Cut a long story short, only a few weeks after the big announcement, ‘Pfalzwein’ made a U-turn, announcing that the office of ‘Palatinate Wine Queen’ will remain, after “intensive talks” with the city of Neustadt (read: the mayor).

According to the wine association, a compromise has been found: At the election of next year’s Palatinate wine royalty in October, either a queen will be chosen who will then also wear a crown, or – if a man wins – this ‘wine sovereign’ will receive a golden pin instead of a crown. The association concluded that the discussion about the Palatinate Wine Queen has shown that this role “means something to many people who identify with the Palatinate wine region”. Moral of this story is apparently: Don’t try and mess with Germany’s fruit and veg monarchies. Long live the queen…
