13 2013-14 SCAC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HONORS

COACH OF THE YEAR MEL DIXON - TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY

In his third season at Texas Lutheran and second as head coach, Mel Dixon has led the Bulldogs to a 20-5 overall mark, a 12-2 conference record and the No. 1 seed in this weekend’s conference tournament. Picked to finish fifth in the SCAC preseason coaches’ poll, TLU posted just its second 20-win season in school history (first in the program’s DIII era) and is currently riding a school-record 11-game win streak. The Bulldogs lead the SCAC in both scoring defense (60.3 ppg allowed) and opponent’s field goal percentage (33.6%) – with the latter statistic bordering on historically good as only one women’s team in SCAC history has held opponents below 34.0 percent shooting for a season. Prior to his tenure in Seguin, Dixon, who had a very successful high school coaching stint in the San Antonio area at Robert E. Lee High School and at Theodore Roosevelt High School, was named the San Antonio “City Coach of the Year” three times and coached the Texas State All-Star Game in 2002. In the school’s inaugural year as a member of the conference, Dixon joins head football coach Danny Padron and becomes the second TLU coach to earn SCAC Coach-of-the-Year honors.

ANECIA RICHARDSON PLAYER OF-THE-YEAR

After earning SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year and D3hoops.com South Region Rookie-of-the-Year honors a year ago, Trinity’s Richardson backed up her rookie season with an even more impressive sophomore campaign – averaging 16.8 points per game (second in the SCAC) while shooting a league-leading 63.3 percent from the field entering this weekend’s conference tournament. A fourtime SCAC Player-of-the-Week selection during the regular season, she also averages 5.7 rebounds per game and leads the league in blocks with 55. Just the second sophomore in conference history to earn Player-of-the-Year honors, Richardson is the second consecutive Trinity women’s player to earn the award (fourth all-time) – following teammate Murphy Burns who was recognized as SCAC Co-Player-of-the-Year last season.

HOLLY TONRY

NEWCOMER OF-THE-YEAR

Holly Tonry of the University of Dallas earned SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year honors after averaging 7.9 points and 4.1 assists per game (second in the SCAC) during the regular season. Tonry leads all freshmen in assists (103) and steals (40) and is second among first-year players in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2), third in free-throw percentage (70.6%) and fifth in scoring. In the school’s third year as a member of the conference, Tonry becomes the first student-athlete from the University of Dallas to receive one of the league’s major post-season awards in the sport of basketball and just the third student-athlete for any sport.

LIBBY KRUSE

DEFENSIVE PLAYER-OF-THE-YEAR

The league’s 2013 SCAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Libby Kruse is the fifth women’s player in SCAC history to earn back-toback Defensive POTY honors and the first since Katie Mathews of DePauw University was selected in 2009-10 and 2010-11. Kruse leads Trinity in both rebounds (228) and assists (95) and ranks third and fifth in the SCAC, respectively, in those categories – the only player in the conference that is currently ranked in the top five for both. A third team All-SCAC selection this season, she is also ninth in the league in both steals per game (1.4 spg) and assist to turnover ratio (1.4). Kruse is the second Trinity women’s player to earn Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors; Jenna Smith was named SCAC Defensive POTY in both 2003-04 and 2004-05.

KANGAROOS 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW

20

Over the past three seasons under head coach Michelle Filander, the Austin College women’s basketball team has made a steady climb up the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings. After a four win season in 2011-2012, Filander has coached the ‘Roos to double digit victories in each of the past two seasons, including a 14-11 mark last year, including a 9-5 finish in SCAC play. This season, with a wealth of experience joined by a big group of talented newcomers, the ‘Roos will be looking to take the next step as they chase the conference crown in 2014-2015. Leading the way will be seniors Christina Kime, Jenna Longo, and Paige Picciotti, as well as Erin Riley, who returns to the team as a graduate student. Kime has started at the point guard position throughout her career, and enters the season with career averages of 12.3 points and 3.8 assistsper-game. The All-SCAC selection averaged a career high 14.4 points and finished among the national leaders with a free throw percentage of 87.7% last season. Riley is another All-SCAC honoree after leading the team with an average of 14.5 points and shooting 40.5% from three point range last season. Riley also pulled down 7.0 rebounds-per-game last night, and is another player who has started throughout her career at Austin College. Longo and Picciotti bring senior leadership, with Longo proving to be a defensive standout as a starter last season while Picciotti, in her first season in the program, appeared in all 25 games last year and adds depth and experience on the perimeter. Two more All-SCAC honorees return from a year ago, including junior post player Brittany Stepanski, who has earned conference recognition in each of her first two seasons. Last season Stepanski averaged 10.3 points and 5.4 rebounds-per-game, and for her career she boasts an average

of 1.2 blocks-per-game. Sophomore Kendall Heitmeier is the other returning All-Conference performer, earning honorable mention recognition after averaging 7.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game while also proving to be an outside threat, hitting 31.6% from deep. The junior class also features post players Chrissy Ray and Brianna Harvey, as well as wing player Kayla Linthicum and combo guard Katie Gowdy. All four have seen significant playing time in their first two seasons and will be looked to for increased roles in the upcoming year. Heitmeier is joined in the sophomore class by a trio of talented young guards, including Olivia Bailey, Olivia Cicci, and Madi Aliff. All three have the athleticism and skill sets to make big contributions this season. Along with the wealth of returning talent and veteran experience, Filander is also welcoming in a big, deep, and talented freshman class. Nine new faces will be joining the ‘Roos this season, including guards Kali Vittallo, Meghan Lewis, Abby Moses, Murphy Graham, Lexi Abercrombie, and Leah Taylor, as well as wing player Hailee Meiners and forwards Alix Hoffman and Andrea Velez. The ‘Roos return a whopping 86.1% of their scoring from last year’s team, including each of the top four scorers from a year ago. With that much production coming back from last year, it’s easy to see Filander’s team making even more strides toward the top of the SCAC standing in the 20142015 campaign.

QUICK NOTES • The ‘Roos earned their best season under Head Coach Michelle Filander last season, earning the fourth-seed in the SCAC tournament with a record of 9-5 in conference play • Seinor Christina Kime will be returning for AC at point guard, after finishing the 2013-14 season averaging 12.3 points and 3.8 assists per game • Second-team All-SCAC selection Erin Riley will also be returning for the ‘Roos this season • Nine new players will step on the court for the ‘Roos as Filander brings in a large class of newcomers to add to the veteran squad

TIGERS 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW

28

Courtney Tyus can do virtually anything with a basketball. A three-year starter for Colorado College, Tyus finds herself poised to continue her climb in the program’s record book. She currently is third with 289 career assists, eighth with 161 steals, tied for 12th with 29 blocked shots and tied for 13th with 56 three-point field goals. The senior captain also ranks among CC’s career leaders in points and rebounds. Add two all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors to her resume, and you’ll begin to understand why teams around the league will attempt to keep the ball out of her hands this season. Despite her personal achievements, Tyus isn’t concerned with statistics or personal accolades. She only wants the team to be successful in her final year. After two consecutive losing seasons, a once-inexperienced team is now ready to make a statement in the SCAC. “This season is going to be different,” Tyus said. “Since last season, we’ve had a huge team mentality switch. Most teams have to start a brand new team each year. That’s not the case for us. The heart of our team is back. We are ready to do what it takes to win.” Courtney’s biggest goal this season is to win a conference championship. A mere three seasons ago, she was on the court when Colorado College

played against Rhodes College in the first round of the SCAC Championship. Tyus is now the only one on the team with a memory of that experience, and she is determined to lead her team of Tigers back to that game and more in her final season. However the 2014-15 season plays out, Tyus has enjoyed every minute of Colorado College basketball. “I’m grateful to everyone at CC who helped me get to where I am,” Tyus said. “I came into a program that gave me all the resources to grow and pushed me to better every day. It’s the little things about this family that I will take with me when I’m gone, [like the] film sessions, pizza parties, and travel trips.” When not on the court, you’re still likely to find Tyus close to the game, with her own chair and snack drawer in assistant coach Katie Sullivan’s office. Even then, she’ll probably have a ball in her hand. The CC women’s basketball team begins its 201415 season against Hardin-Simmons • The Tigers have just one University at 7 p.m. senior on their roster this on Nov. 15 in Reid year, three-year starter Arena.

QUICK NOTES

Courtney Tyus, who has already taken up spots in the CC record book and has earned two third team AllSCAC honors in her tenure • The Tigers have more experience on the team, with four juniors and three sophomores returnining this season • Colorado College’s top two scorers last season, Danielle Davis and Korbyn Ukasick, will be returning, as will the rest of the top five scorers on the team • The Tigers earned their fourth consecutive SCAC tournament berth last season, earning the No. 7 seed

CRUSADERS 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW

32

The University of Dallas Women’s Basketball Team is looking to improve on their 14-13 record and 6th place finish in the SCAC in 2013-14. Although they lost Second Team All-SCAC performer Christy Allen, they return four starters and seven players that were in the regular rotation. Included in these returners is Marleyna Bustamante who is a third team member of All-SCAC and Holly Tonry who was the SCAC freshmen of the year. Both Bustamante and Brooke Hagemann will be four year starters for UD and have played a significant role in the improvement of the program. Bustamante was UD’s second leading scorer last season and led the league in steals per game. Hagemann averaged 9 points and 7 rebounds a game last season and has had an exceptional pre-season this year. Sophomores Tonry and Sammi Tso shared the point guard duties last season and will continue to play the point and two guard this season. Both Tonry and Tso, and Lindsey Gendron and

Seana Stoia, will asked to have an increased role on the UD team. Gendron lead the Crusaders in three pointers made and three point percentage. MOUNTAINEERS 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW

36

The 2013-14 season for Schreiner Women’s Basketball was a record-breaker. It was head coach Temaine Wright’s first season and it was special for coaches and players alike. Change has certainly taken place in the roster but many of the key faces return for a new season - one that has more reason for optimism than existed just 12 months ago. The returners are led by junior Kelsie Jackson. Although only listed a 5’6”, the Corpus Christi, TX native (King HS) played much bigger on the floor. She earned All-SCAC honors by averaging 15.3 points and 6.2 rebounds last year. She also led in steals and was second in assists. While the production stands out, it is Jackson’s quiet strength and leadership that may be her greatest assets. But Jackson won’t have to be a do-everything player this winter. Back after sitting out last year recovering from major surgery is senior Brooke Sanders (Ponder, TX/Ponder HS). Sanders, statistically, had an even bigger impact on games when those two were both on the floor in 2012-13 and having them back together should help each excel this time around. Also back in sophomore Olivia Lott (Converse, TX/Converse HS). Lott started last year on fire but tapered off over the course of the season. Still, she showed that she can be a monster stats producer and it is hoped that she’ll be that player from early 2013-14 all year. Sophomores Chris Jones (Killeen, TX/Ellison HS) and Sabriyyah Fennell (Cypress, TX/Cy-Ranch HS) and junior Tylor Rambeau also showed major signs of potential and could blossom significantly for SU. Jones has the ability to control the floor with her quickness and ability to penetrate. Fennell is a very sound, all-around player who can really impact a game and Rambeau is a solid, long, inside defender and rebounder that opponents will have to contend with around the basket. There are several new faces who also could change the face of Mountaineer Basketball this winter. In particular,

freshman Jordyn Villa (Crawford, TX/Crawford HS) - a point guard - and freshman wing Shaila Wolter (Keller, TX/Byron Nelson HS) might stand out. The Mountaineers’ strengths should be veteran leadership, a team-first mentality and continuity. Schreiner was picked sixth by the league coaches this year. Coach Wright on the 2014-15 season: “I’ve been involved with SU Women’s Basketball for five years. It’s been awhile since the program has had a nucleus of talented players who are older and can lead our younger players like this group could. In the past, freshmen would often come in and play over the upperclassmen but this may not be the case this year. It’s going to be fun to be a part of the progression of Mountaineer Basketball this winter.” After crushing the program’s previous bests with a 15-12 overall record and 9-5 mark in the SCAC (3rd place), the Mountaineers are in a place where maintaining is unlikely. The opportunity is that this group could take another step forward towards the top of the league but must avoid the pitfalls of success as well. Schreiner starts its season with a long road trip to the Pacific Northwest. SU opens in the L&C Bon Appetit Tournament in Portland, OR against Lewis & Clark and Willamette on the weekend of November 14-15. Hardin-Simmons is the Mountaineers’ home-opening opponent on Monday, November 24th and SU then starts home league play on a big night. Friday, January 16th will see Texas Lutheran come to town but will also be the grand opening for • The Mountaineers will reSchreiner’s long anticiturn second-team All-SCAC pated Athletic & Events player Kelsie Jackson who Center. averaged 15.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game last season

QUICK NOTES

• Head Coach Temaine Wright will be back for his second season at the head of the Schreiner women’s basketball program after leading the team to a record of 15-12, 9-5 in conference play • The Mountaineers made it to the SCAC tournament in their first season with the conference, earning the fifth-seed • Schreiner earned a first round upset at the 2014 SCAC tournament, defeating No. 4 Austin College 75-63 before falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Texas Lutheran

PIRATES 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW

40

After earning the third seed at the 2014 SCAC Basketball Tournament by posting a 9-5 conference mark, Southwestern University was upset in the first round by the six seed University of Dallas. This year’s edition of the Pirates wants to put the memory of that game behind them. With plenty of returning talent, that shouldn’t be a problem for head coach Kerri Brinkoeter, including a pair of 6 foot senior forwards that should provide match-up headaches throughout the conference. Second team All-SCAC selection Annie Bourne averaged 9.5 points and a league-high 10.8 rebounds per game a year ago, and shot 44.7 percent from the floor (fifth in the SCAC). With 822 career rebounds heading into the 2014-15 season, Bourne has a chance to break the league’s all-time career rebounding mark of 1,083, which is currently held by Austin College’s Katy Williams (2006-2010). Jordan Owens, who earned Third Team All-SCAC honors last season, is the team’s leading scorer (14.1 ppg – ninth in the SCAC) and was in the top 10 in the conference in both field goal percentage (44.2 percent – eighth) and free-throw percentage (75.5 percent – 10th). Junior center Audrey Garcia (6.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg) along with a duo of seniors – forward Madison Eschle (5.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg) and forward McKamie Place (5.5 ppg, 2.9 rpg) – will all be counted on to make valuable contributions if the Pirates hope to return to the SCAC championship game as it did in 2013.

Only Trinity has won more conference games since Brinkoeter returned to the sidelines in Georgetown prior to the 2010-11 season. She has a 40-21 mark in SCAC play over that span and an overall mark of 64-43. Last season’s squad finished 13-13, the team’s first “non-winning” season since prior to Brinkoeter’s arrival. After struggling to a 2-8 start, Southwestern bounced back to win 11 of its next 13 before faltering with two straight conference losses and the opening-round tournament loss to Dallas. Even with the size advantage it enjoys most nights, Southwestern prefers an up-tempo style of play – evidenced by its league-leading 22.0 three-point field goal attempts and 6.8 makes per game in 2013-14. The downside to that approach was the team’s 17.6 free throw attempts and 12.2 makes per game – both league lows. The Pirates were strong from the field and on the glass in 2013-14, finishing second in the SCAC in both rebounding (44.0 per game) and field goal percentage (41.1 percent). Southwestern opens its 2014-15 campaign with a home game against University of Texas-Dallas on Tuesday, November 18

QUICK NOTES

• The Pirates will be returning second-team All-SCAC honoree, Annie Bourne, who posted a conference leading 10.8 rebounds per game • Southwestern finished second in the league in both rebounding and field goal percentage last season • The Pirates earned the third-seed at the 2014 SCAC Basketball Tournament after posting a 9-5 record in conference play • The Pirates lost three seniors from last season, including Chelsea Leeder, who ranked third among the conference, avergaing 15.5 points per game

BULLDOGS 2014-15 KEY RETURNERS KARISA CANTU

SR., SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

42

Cantu stepped into the TLU women’s basketball team and became not only a team leader, but one of the conference’s best players in her first year with the Bulldogs. The senior earned All-SCAC First Team honors in 2013-14, leading the team in scoring (12.3/game) and assists (3.5/game). She finished second in steals (39) and fifth in rebounding (3.9/game). The guard only started three games for TLU, but came off the bench and captained a lethal second unit that helped propel the Bulldogs to a program-first conference title and NCAA Division III Tournament berth.

TAYLOR DYDALEWICZ

JR., DRIPPING SPRINGS, TEXAS

As a sophomore, Dydalewicz saw huge statistical jumps despite averaging essentially the same amount of minutes as she did her freshman season. She increased her scoring more than five points per game, finishing second on the team with 11.1 points per contest. She also averaged more than two more rebounds per game as a sophomore, finishing second on the squad with 5.2/game. A major portion of her production came at the free throw stripe, as she finished second on the team with 93 made free throws and 142 attempts.

SAVANNAH HIGHT

KRISTEN LYE

SO., SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

Lye didn’t waste much time introducing herself to Bulldog fans and becoming a crucial part of Coach Dixon’s squad as a freshman. She earned All-SCAC Honorable Mention, leading the team in rebounding (5.6/game) and finishing third in scoring (10.7/game). She was also extremely efficient from the field, finishing second on the team among qualified players in field goal percentage (45.7). Her best two-game stretch came early in the season against Northwood and St. Ambrose, when she averaged 19 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest.

CHELSEY STOLLE

SR., FALLS CITY, TEXAS

Stolle was the defensive anchor in the middle of the paint that every championship team needs. The senior led the conference in blocked shots, averaging 2.1 per game and influencing countless others by standing with her arms straight up in the paint. Stolle also pulled down 4.9 rebounds per contest, good enough for third best on the team. She averaged 4.4 points per game.

SO., SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

Hight joined Lye as the second-half of the Bulldogs’ dynamic freshmen duo. The sweet-shooting guard earned All-SCAC Honorable Mention after averaging nine points, 1.1 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game. Hight established herself as one of the Bulldogs’ top outside threats, finishing second on the team with 39 made 3-pointers while shooting at a 39 percent clip from outside. She was also a defensive presence, leading the team in steals and finishing second in blocks.

BULLDOGS 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW

44

The 2014-15 campaign promises to be a brand-new experience for the Texas Lutheran women’s basketball program. After a surprising (at least from the outside world) and scintillating run to both SCAC regular-season and tournament titles, along with the program’s first NCAA Division III Tournament berth, the Bulldogs will see their role switch from the hunter to the hunted. The Bulldogs spent their first season in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference running through their new conference foes on their way to a school-record 23 wins and a 23-6 overall record. They finished 12-2 in the SCAC, before capping off the season with a scintillating 54-52 win over Trinity in the SCAC Championship final. Karisa Cantu sent the Bulldogs to their first NCAA Tournament with a jumper in the final seconds of the game. Texas Lutheran ended the historic season with a 74-62 loss to John Carroll University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. “Last year, to be real honest, I think we snuck up on some people,” Texas Lutheran coach Mel Dixon said. “They knew we weren’t very good in the ASC – we’d only win seven or eight games a year and that’s just the way it was. Last year we broke out of that mold. I think people saw we had potential to be good, but we hadn’t been very good. There’s not going to be any sneaking up on people anymore.” Last season is one for the record books, and certainly won’t be forgotten anytime soon by TLU followers. But, the thing about sports is, the reset button gets hit every year. All eight SCAC schools have eyes set on a conference crown. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, although the record may start back over at 0-0, much of the talent and experience from last year remains. The Bulldogs will return nine of their top 10 scorers from last season, having lost just two seniors from that championship squad. In fact, they will return over 90 percent of their scoring and rebounding. Cantu (San Antonio, Texas) will be among the talented group coming back. The senior guard earned All-SCAC First Team honors in her first season with the Bulldogs last year, leading the team in scoring (12.3/game) and assists (3.5/ game). She was one of the members of an explosive bench unit that played a crucial role in the Bulldogs’ success. Senior leadership is important to any squad hoping to accomplish the things TLU wants to accomplish, and with five

seniors on the roster, Dixon has plenty to lean on. Along with Cantu, Dixon will rely on Bianca Casas (Edinburg, Texas), Natalie Vella (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Chelsey Stolle (Falls City, Texas) to help lead this squad on a championship defense. Taylor Dydalewicz (Dripping Springs, Texas) is another upperclassman ready to lead this team after earning All-SCAC Second Team honors last season. “Most of the seniors have been here their whole careers,” Dixon said. “So they’re used to me, I’m used to them. They know things about me, and I know things about them. They know what I like and what I don’t like – what will get them in trouble real quick. I have a lot of trust in our seniors. All six of them have been through the wars.” To go along with the senior leadership, the Bulldogs will trot out two sophomores who exploded onto the scene as first-year players. Both Savannah Hight (San Antonio, Texas) and Kristin Lye (San Antonio, Texas) earned All-SCAC Honorable Mention as freshmen. Hight was an assassin from behind the arc, finishing second on the team with 39 3-pointers. Lye did more of her work inside, leading the team in rebounding (5.6/game). It’s a good thing the Bulldogs have such a talented, experienced group coming back, because they will need all of that talent to navigate a tough non-conference schedule which features seven road games in the first 10 contests. The Bulldogs will take on former ASC rivals UT-Dallas, Concordia-Texas and Mary Hardin-Baylor early on. They will also play host to Whitworth, a team receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches’ poll, on Dec. 5. The non-conference slate concludes with Tyler, Texas, where the Bulldogs will face off against No. 12 Texas-Tyler. The SCAC schedule kicks off on the road Jan. 3 against Southwestern. The Bulldogs’ first home SCAC game comes against Centenary on Jan. 9. After starting conference play with five of their • The Bulldogs are coming off first seven games on the of an exciting season, earning road, the Bulldogs will the team’s first SCAC Champiclose five home games in onship, and the program’s first the final seven.

TIGERS 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW

48

The 2014-15 Trinity Tigers women’s basketball team can best be described as a hard-working ensemble of dedicated players. Third-year head Coach Cameron Hill will work with 11 returning players, including three starters, as the Tigers take the floor November 15 at George Fox University at Newberg, Oregon. Trinity completed last season with a 20-8 overall record, and finished up at 10-4 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Tigers were edged 54-52 by Texas Lutheran University in the SCAC Championship played in Sams Gym. Lost to graduation were All-American Murphy Burns, and two-time SCAC Defensive Player of the Year Libby Kruse. But, among the returnees are All-American Anecia Richardson, All-SCAC performer Hannah Coley, and stalwart player Caitlin Barrett. However, Coach Hill is emphasizing the teamwork aspect of his charges. “Everyone who is still part of our program can be a contributor this year,” Coach Hill said. “That is because of how we work as a team. We have a roster of players where I can literally play anyone at any time. The biggest difference this year is our team’s chemistry. It is really special.” Richardson is a 5-10 junior forward who was selected for the Women’s DIII News All-America Honorable Mention Team. In addition, Richardson was named the SCAC Player of the Year. The prolific Richardson averaged a SCAC-leading 16.6 points per game. She also led the conference in field goal percentage (62.4 percent), which ranks as the fourth-highest single-season mark in SCAC history. She stood at No. 6 on the NCAA Division III national level during the 2013-14 season. Richardson’s 466 points place her at No. 7 on Trinity’s single-season scoring list. She also leads the returning players in rebounds, with 5.8 per matchup. Richardson was responsible for 59 blocked shots (2.1 per game) Coley, a 5-7 senior guard, joined Richardson on the AllSCAC First Team. Coley averaged 14.8 points per game, and dished out 94 total assists (3.4 per game). Ranked fifth in SCAC scoring, Coley accounted for 414 total points. Combined with her two previous seasons, Coley has amassed 1,127 career points (13.7 per game), and is the ninth-leading scorer in Trinity history. She needs just one point to move up to No. 8. In the assists department, Coley has chalked up 246 (3.0 per game) over the past three seasons, and is fifth all time among Tiger players. Coley is the returning “theft” leader, as she made 46 steals (1.6 per game). Additionally, the versatile Coley pulled in 4.1 rebounds per game. Barrett, a 5-5 junior guard, played and started in the Tigers first 11 games before sustaining a season-ending injury. She

averaged 6.1 points and 3.4 rebounds, while pumping out 41 assists (3.7 per game). Barrett also produced 37 steals (3.4 per game) in her shortened season. In addition to Coley, two other seniors will provide leadership for the Tigers this season. Lauren Splawn, a 5-5 guard, scored 6.0 points per game, and made 30 steals (2.7 per game). Taylor Hollins, a 5-11 center, averaged 4.4 points and 3.4 rebounds. Hollins recorded a 50 percent shooting average. Sophomore 5-5 guard Grace Horn was a playmaker with 53 assists (2.0 per game), while chalking up 21 total steals. Horn started in 10 games during the campaign. Allison Staley, a 5-9 sophomore guard/forward, averaged 4.2 points per game. Bryony Harris, a 5-11 junior forward, brought in an average of 3.5 rebounds for the Tiger team. Also back to provide depth are 5-7 junior guard Natalie Dewitte, and 5-5 junior guard Ashley Alexander. Returning to the lineup after an injury is 5-10 junior guard Elizabeth Balido. Trinity led the SCAC in scoring offense with 75.4 points per game, good for a No. 36 ranking in Division III. Also on the national books, the Tigers were ranked 17th in assists per game (17.0), and 23rd in field goal percentage (43.9 percent). Trinity was fourth in SCAC defense with a 63.6 opponents’ average. Five newcomers will bolster the Tigers lineup during the 2014-15 season. Assistant Coach Stephen Bourne believes the new Trinity players will complement the veterans. “They have really showed up, and are buying into our program,” Coach Bourne said of the newest group of Tigers. “With that, I think our whole team is ready to do some good things. They are an entire unit ready to dominate their opponents.” A 5-9 sophomore guard is Monica Holguin, who will be joined in the backcourt by 5-7 first-year player Rebecca Gordon. First-year 5-11 forwards are Maria Protic and Mollie Hughes. Coming in at post is Kate Irvin, who claims the Tigers height advantage at 6-1. A welcome addition to the coaching staff is Joe Shotland, who was a standout on the Tiger men’s team. Trinity will play 11 games in Sams Gym this season, starting December 19 with North Park University of Chicago, Illinois. The conference home slate begins January 16 with Southwestern University, while the SCAC Championship is scheduled for February 27-March 1 at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas.
