Spend a beautiful nine spring days in northern New Mexico, one of America’s most unique and enchanting regions. Nowhere is there a more unique and diverse landscape in scenery, people, history and culture. Practice your photographic skills by exploring the rich tri-cultural heritage of this part of our country. Travel in a small group along historic back roads, visit small towns and to get to know the ancient and contemporary places of America’s first people. Together with Hispanic and European settlers, they have preserved New Mexico’s “Land of Enchantment”. The tour is custom designed for photographers of all levels, as well as individuals interested in art, history and cultural heritage. Tentative Tour Itinerary Saturday, March 16: Mid-day
assembly of group at Albuquerque Airport. Afternoon drive along the historic “Turquoise Trail” with visits to several former “ghost towns”. Checkin for four nights at the fabulous and historic La Fonda Hotel, the “Inn at the End of the Trail”. Our excursion headquarter is centrally located on the picturesque town plaza with its world class museums, galleries and restaurants. Welcome dinner at the hotel’s La Plazuela Restaurant.
Sunday, March 17: Morning walking
tour of one of America’s most beautiful cities – Santa Fe, followed by free time to explore the renowned Indian Market at the historic Palace of the Governors. Afternoon excursion to the mountains around Los Alamos to Bandelier National Monument with its dramatic canyons and pre-Columbian cliff dwellings – spectacular for hiking and photography!
Monday, March 18: All day excursion
to Chaco Canyon National Historic Park in remote northwestern New Mexico. A thriving and vastly networked community more than a thousand years ago, the UNESCO World Heritage Site features the impressive, multi-storied ruins of an ancient civilization, which is considered the ancestral homeland of many of New Mexico’s contemporary native people.
Tuesday, March 19: Today, we will
visit the mysterious geological landscape of Tent Rocks National Monument south of Santa Fe. Our hike will take us through a series of box canyons, eventually leading to a high plateau that will provide a spectacular 360 degree view of the surrounding natural landscape.
Wednesday, March 20: Following the traces of the legendary Santa Fe Trail, we will travel to Fort Union National Monument, the 19th century site of an extensive supply fort to protect the
wagon trails going West. Check-in at the Victorian Plaza Hotel, a more than one hundred year old restored hotel in the other city of Las Vegas, one of New Mexico’s still undiscovered historical treasures. After dinner, a special night photography session will be featured.
Thursday, March 21: Today, we will
travel across the spectacular Sangre de Christo Mountains, through the culturally interesting Mora Valley. Stops will include the picturesque mill on the historic Salman Ranch and the 18th century Spanish villages and mission churches on the famed “High Road to Taos”. Group dinner at the classic Rancho de Chimayo Restaurant, located in a century-old adobe home in the pilgrimage town of Chimayo. Check-in for two nights at the charming El Pueblo Lodge in the high elevation town of Taos, known for its vibrant artist community and beautiful surrounding scenery.
