Alice & William Jenkins Gallery Recognizing established artists from Florida, the nation, and beyond

Crealdé School of Art is a community-based non-profit art organization established in 1975, featuring an affordable, sequential curriculum of over 100 studio courses and workshops in painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture and related media for adults and children, with hands-on experience emphasized. Also, Crealdé offers an award-winning scholarship and outreach program to special populations from the diverse Central Florida community. Our two galleries offer changing multi-disciplinary visual art exhibitions by artists from Florida, the nation, and the world. Central Florida’s only contemporary sculpture garden showcases over 60 outdoor pieces of art. A limited number of classes are held at the Jesse Brock Community Center in Winter Garden. Crealdé’s main campus is located off Aloma Avenue at 600 St. Andrews Blvd., Winter Park, FL 32792. The office and galleries are open 9:00–4:00 on Monday–Thursday, and 9:00–1:00 Friday and Saturday. Crealdé’s community annex represents a part407.539.2680 nership with the City of Winter Park, and pays tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s historic African American community through a unique collection of historic photographs and oral histories. Established by Crealdé in 2007, the center also features visual art exhibitions and educational programs that explore Southern folklore and cultural preservation. January 11 – March 9, Micro/Macro: An Installation of Sculpture by Joshua Almond The Assistant Professor of art at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, creates free standing and wall mounted sculptures that refer to both microscopic biological structures and geologic formations. Almond’s work exploits the unexpected interconnection between these macroscopic and microscopic worlds. Curated by Faculty member Dennis Schmalstig. Gallery talk and opening reception, 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, January 11.

Showalter Hughes Community Gallery Celebrating the art of Crealdé’s community January 5 – March 30, 2013, Director’s Choice III Be inspired by the recent work of eight Crealdé faculty members representing photography, painting, drawing, ceramics and sculpture, selected and curated by Crealdé’s executive director Peter Schreyer and artistic directors Vince Sansone, Rick Lang and Henry Sinn. Opening reception held January 5 during Open House, 7 to 9 p.m. April 5 – June 1, 2013, Sherri Bunye, Interstate 4: The Exits Less Travelled An interstate highway is rarely thought of in artful visions, but Sorrow of the Trees by faculty this Crealdé Studio member Hye Shin Artist has used I-4 in Central Florida as the jumping off point for a colorful series of photographs called FloridaScapes. Bunye is attracted to dramatic skies and intensely saturated colors. Opening reception 7-9 p.m. on Friday, April 5.

March 15 – May 25, 13th Southeastern Photography Invitational: A Sense of Place For over two decades this Crealdé exhibition has introduced Central Floridians to new trends in contemporary photography. Rick Lang, Photography Department Director, selects a group of Southeastern photographers whose work utilizes the power of the photographic medium to transport the viewer to a different time or place. Gallery talk and opening reception, 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 15.

Heritage Center Gallery

Exploring heritage and folklore through the visual arts and humanities January 18 – April 13, Sewn Together: Photographic Quilts Reflect the Historic Family Ties of Eatonville, Maitland and Winter Park As a tribute to the 125th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Eatonville, the oldest African American municipality in the United States, the Heritage Center Quilting Guild will work with seven families to create a series of photographic quilts that tell the story of the relationships in the African American communities of the three cities. Led by Heritage Center Docent Mary Daniels, Chief Historian Fairolyn Livingston, and curated by Crealdé Painting & Drawing Director Henry Sinn. Opening reception Friday, January 18, 6 to 8 p.m. April 19 – Sept. 7, 2013, Preaching to the Trees and the Animals: The Folk Art of O.L. Samuels As the opening event for this year’s Folk Art and Craft Festival, the Heritage Center will feature one of America’s most noted folk artists. The Tallahassee artist shows his elaborately carved wood sculptures that represent his love for the natural world. The exhibition also features two large carved animal sculptures from the collection of the Mennello Museum of American Art. Curated by Crealdé Executive Director Peter Schreyer. Opening lecture with O.L Samuels, 6 to 7 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, followed by a reception with live blues music from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 19 at the Heritage Center.

Crealdé Upcoming Events January 20 & 21 Winter Park Unity Heritage Festival. This annual festival honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is held in Shady Park, across from the Hannibal Square Heritage Center. Enjoy live music, dance, children’s art activities, and soul food; take a tour of the Heritage Center. Sunday 12-5 p.m. or Monday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

March 9 Crealdé’s 3rd Annual Family Festival. Join in a day of free fun, art, and exploration on Crealdé’s beautiful campus, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day will include pony rides, face painting and a bounce house. Students may register for Summer ArtCamp at a oneday only discount rate.

February 13 SNAP! Celebrate the Photograph reception at the Hannibal Square April 20 The Family Festival welcomes all ages Heritage Center. Crealdé School 4th Annual Hannibal of Art is partnering with the interSquare Heritage Center national SNAP! Festival for an Folk Art and Craft Festival, evening of photography presentations and soulful features work for sale by Florida artists as well as music from 5-8 p.m. live folk music, soul food, and a hands-on “Kid Folk” workshop. Summer Art Camp June 10 to August 2

Central Florida’s original ArtCamp, first created in 1982, provides an overview of the fundamentals of art-making as each student learns from professional artists in real art studios. Camps are offered for students ages 4 to 17, who are placed in age-appropriate groups of up to 13 participants. Students explore their creativity in photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and painting and drawing. Abstract and figurative forms will be constructed and prepared for kiln firing. Simple mold making will be introduced toward the end of the session. You’ll learn the basics of Case Bound, Coptic, and Stab stitch (Japanese style) on hard cover books. Make your own personalized journals, sketchbooks, albums and more! TD178 The Art of Papermaking

Insructor: Hye Shin Winter & Spring Tuesday, 10:00 a.m.–12 noon Heritage Center Learn the basics of papermaking using recycled paper, rose petals, onion skins, sewing scraps, junk mail, etc… Students will use mold and deckle techniques to make their own unique paper. TD182 The Art of Fabric Collage

Instructor: Hye Shin Winter & Spring Thursday, 10:00 a.m.–12 noon Heritage Center This class is based on traditional quilting and sewing to develop a visual language using scraps of fabric, appliqué, threads and beads. Students will create printed fabrics of their own design using an ink jet printer. This class is for all levels. A sewing machine is preferred for faster progress. Weekend Workshops Introduction to Welding

with David Cumbie Foundry Choose from 3 weekend workshops: Jan. 26-27; Feb. 23-24; March 23-24; 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Registration deadline one week prior. Join us in designing small sculptures in a weekend. Practice cutting and basic welding techniques while creating artwork from found objects. Materials are included. Create Fused Glass Jewelry

Instructor: Tammy Lennox Studio 7 Choose from two workshops: Jan. 27; April 28; noon to 4:00 p.m. Enjoy this fascinating introduction to Dichroic Glass fusing and discover kiln fired glass. Students will see the kiln fired, be introduced to and learn about dazzling dichroic glass, basic glass cutting skills and design elements. Helaine Schneider has been sculpting the figure in clay for the last nine years. Her work started out focused on the figure itself, anatomy and form taking precedent over meaning. Saturday, 1:00–4:00 p.m. Studio 1A with Kathy Chenet. Winter & Spring This is a six-week class. Painting landscapes in the studio from photographs as well as on-site, outdoor painting. Learn to use a limited palette to mix colors for the landscape, composition, linear and aerial perspective to create depth in your paintings, and how to combine these skills to paint light and shadow. Painting & Drawing Workshops Symbolistic Painting Workshop

January 12 and 13 with Barbara Tiffany 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. in Studio 1A Throughout art history, symbolism has been used as a means to tell a visual story. Through a thoughtful selection of props, you can tell a personal story about yourself, your family, a particular experience, or even enhance a commissioned painting. There can also be images such as a landscape or animals, slightly suggested in the background to enhance the story. You may work from life or a photo on this project. Speaking with Barbara ahead of time may help you come up with some ideas that are personal to you. Since each painting is unique to you, bring your own materials. Beginning her career as a commercial artist, she began participating in outdoor art festivals, as well as museum exhibits and competitions, winning awards along the way. Painting From The Intuitive

March 1, 2, and 3 with Patricia Wheeler 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. in Studio 1A The spirit of art is always affirming. Students will work from their intuitive side to build paintings that can transform personal experience or vision into art. Using the concept of palimpsest, where remnants of earlier, imperfectly erased markings are revealed, we will employ scripts and symbols to create abstract paintings. We will use limestone clay on board with a variety of acrylic paints as stain, and cold wax to seal the final layer. As we build, stencil and cut into the paintings, we begin to understand the layering and distressed surfaces of ancient places and how that can metaphorically reflect ourselves. Prerequisite: Basic design sense. This work is physical and messy. Emphasis on working in series. Designed to educate students about their specific cameras, these weekly workshops provide an overview of menus and usage for better control of your photographs. • Refunds must be requested by noon the day before the first class. A refund will be issued less a $10 processing fee for members and less a $30 processing fee for non-members. Refund requests made after the start of the first class will not be honored; see below for credits. • Withdrawal from class for credit must be requested before start of the second class. A class credit will be issued if requested no later than 24 hours prior to the start of the second class. Class credits are good for the two terms immediately following the original term. • Refunds for workshops are full tuition less processing fee based on membership status. No refunds for workshops will be made after the registration deadline. • Class transfers must also be completed no later than 24 hours prior to the start of the second class. Transfers after the first class but before the second class will be assessed a processing fee. Transfers, refunds and credits are not available after the second class. These policies apply regardless of attendance status.
