CLICK SHEET: CREATING A STUDENT LOGIN TO PSCONNECT

4

CLICK SHEET: LOCATING THE STUDENT PEIMS NUMBER

5

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: FRONT PAGE AND LOGGING IN  Website: Directly to http://moodle.houstonisd.org/lamarhs/, or through the Lamar 2.0 Teacher Portal.  Teachers use their own HISD username and password that they use for Chancery, Gradespeed, Windows, etc.  Passwords cannot be changed through moodle, but should be changed through the HISD portal. If you forgot your password, use the “Forgot password” button on the Windows network login, or call the help desk (713-‐ 892-‐SERV).

6

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: NAVIGATION & COURSE LAYOUT  Don’t panic, it will get easier  The middle of the course page is the meat of the course  The left and right sides of the course page have the bells and the whistles

7

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: NAVIGATION TIPS  Use the breadcrumbs at the top  Expand and collapse blocks  View one topic at a time / all at once

8

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: REQUESTING A COURSE Before you can edit your course, we need to make sure that you have a course to edit. Please note that a moodle course doesn't have to be a class. It could also be a club or extracurricular activity. MY COURSES BLOCK

Go to the front page of Lamar's Moodle site after you are logged in. On the right side, try to find the My courses block (or perhaps Course categories); at the very bottom of that block, click on the All courses button.

9

COURSES PAGE

When you click the All courses button, you will be taken to the Courses (or Course categories) page.

You can look through the list of departments and categories, and see if your course is already there; if so, email lhstic@groups.live.com, so you can be added as a teacher to that course. If your course is not there, then go to the very bottom of the Course categories page, and click on Request a course.

Then you will be taken to a Course request form with some basic information about your course. Fill out all the information, including the enrolment key. The enrollment key is important to keeping out unwanted users; it is basically a one-‐time password that the teacher gives to the students so that they can sign up for the 10

course. Also, you must type something for Supporting information…, but don’t worry about making a detailed narrative explanation.

11

12

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: RESET YOUR COURSE  Find the Administration block in the left blocks column  Click on the Reset link

        

Do not pick Delete events if someone (you or a colleague) may have put events on the calendar for the upcoming year. Delete logs will delete records of student activities. In Roles, make sure you select the Student role and only the Student role. If someone set up a gradebook in moodle last year, that work will be lost if you Delete all items and categories. Avoid checking that. Delete all grades will delete the grades that were recorded last year. Delete all submissions will remove student submitted work form last year. You may want to avoid Delete all posts if there are forum posts that you wish to save. After taking a deep breath, make sure you click the button Reset course. Click Continue when directed to do so.

16

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: CREATE GROUPS  Find the Administration block in the left blocks column  Click on Groups (if you don’t see this link, go to settings and change your Group mode)

 Create group for each teacher section number.  Include a unique enrollment key for each teacher’s section.  Use a pattern in the enrollment keys (passwordBudd6, passwordDoran3) to make it easier to manage and remember. [But use an actual password instead of ‘password’.]  Teachers should give students the enrollment key for the period, not for the course.  If students use enrollment key for the period, they are automatically enrolled in the class, and put in the right group.  Use Add/remove users to manually switch students after schedule changes

17

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: CREATE GROUPINGS  First of all, moodle’s vocabulary here leaves a lot to be desired. Just remember that “groups” are sections. And “groupings” are basically groups of groups. We will make a “grouping” of all the sections that a single instructor teaches.  Find the Administration block in the left blocks column  Click on Groups (if you don’t see this link, go to settings and change your Group mode)

 Click on the Groupings tab  Click the Create groupings button

(This is continued on the following page)

18

 Name the Grouping after the teacher whose sections (“groups”) you are grouping together

 Now we will add sections (“groups”) to your grouping: click on the people icon to change the grouping.

 Select the sections that correspond to that teacher. In moodle language, you are “grouping” the groups. Left click with your mouse on the first section, and then you can shift-‐click the rest. (Or you can just add ‘em one-‐by-‐one.)  Click on the Add button to add the groups you selected to your teacher grouping.

19

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: TURN EDITING ON Teachers, but not students, have the ability to modify and edit a course.

This will change what your course looks like. You will have a host of new icons for adding, editing or deleting elements of your course.

20

21

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: CHANGING TITLES  Turn editing on  Click on the hand with a pencil in it to edit/ change/ Update

 Don’t forget to Save changes

22

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: ADD A FILE      

Be aware of Mac/Windows/Linux compatibility issues when you make your file Be aware of version issues (your Word 2010 at home may not work at school) Turn editing on Resources (students look at) vs. Activities (students do – these can be gradeable) In the right unit/ topic: Add a resource  Link to file or website Choose or upload file  Upload a file  Browse  pick your file  Upload a file  Don’t click on the file, but instead Choose that file  Make and use folders to help organize files  Hit Force download for files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, pdf)  Don’t forget to Save changes

23

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: ADD A LINK       

Very similar process to Adding a file Turn editing on Resources (students look at) vs. Activities (students do – these can be gradeable) In the right unit/ topic: Add a resource  Link to file or website Paste the URL (http://) address in the Location box. Make sure you don’t double the http:// Same window vs. new window Don’t forget to Save changes

24

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: ADD AND MOVE A CALENDAR BLOCK  Turn editing on  Find the block labeled Blocks for adding new blocks

 Use the dropdown menu to add a Calendar block  After you add it, it will be at the bottom on the right.  Use the up or left arrows to slowly, step-‐by-‐step, move the Calendar block where you want it.

25

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: ADD EVENTS  Find the Upcoming events block (usually on the right column)  Click New event

 You can also click New event on the calendar page

IMHO, Events = important due dates, not what you’re doing that day Using moodle as a calendar planner means you have to do it all again next year. Avoid. Files and such are added to the center column of the main page, not to the calendar. If you use Add an activity  Assignment  Offline activity, the assignment be listed on the course page, and the due date automatically added to the calendar  User events are for you and only you  Group events are for a group, e.g., a teacher’s section  Course events are for everyone enrolled in the course    

26

CLICK SHEET: MOODLE: ADD A DISCUSSION FORUM  Turn editing on  Add an activity  Forum  Use the [?] help icon to find out more about the settings
