EDITOR’S NOTES

by AMY MERRITT
ast Friday night I got meet Col. Bruce Hampton after his show at Gnat’s Landing. We talked about art and poetry long enough for him to recall that he once wrote a book of poetry, back in the ‘60s, with great Allen Ginsberg himself. The book’s name is The Red Handbook of Poetry, and though it is long out of print, the poet “Hampton B. Coles” (which is how the Colonel’s name appears in the book) is still creating art everyday. After gushing quite a bit about the Colonel’s connection with my favorite Beat poet, I heard him say something that seemed to me both startling and brave. “You’re a Pisces, aren’t you,” He asked me. “No, I’m a Cancer.” I replied.
Then confidently he told me, “You feel for people. You cry for people, and it may be behind closed doors, but you care for people very much, and you’re sad for them. I don’t believe in Astrology or the Zodiac, or whatever. I’ve always thought it was kind of loony. Having my soul read by Morris the lovable band manager of Sling Blade (1996) is certainly not something I’m accustomed to. However, I couldn’t help but think how close to the truth he had hit. I have been known to be an overwhelmingly empathetic person as both a child and young adult. To the Colonel, thanks for the mystical incite. But more importantly, thanks for the heady jams!

THINGS TO DO FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 Community invited to first home game block party
Football season is almost here, and the Georgia Southern campus is buzzing with anticipation. Traditions Council is hosting the year’s first Block Party in front of the University Store from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Sept. 9. All Georgia Southern fans are invited to attend and support Georgia Southern Athletics and our football team as they begin the 2011 season. In an effort to encourage more student and community involvement, Eagle Rallies have transitioned into Block Parties and will be held on Friday evenings before rival games. Block Parties will maintain the Eagle Rally aspect, with several new additions including a free cookout and a DJ. By lengthening the event, students will have more opportunity to interact with peers, administration, athletics and the community. Special appearances at the Block Party include student athletes, GUS, the Georgia Southern cheerleaders and the Southern Pride Marching Band. Additionally, Traditions Council is offering several giveaways to guests. Attendees will also have the opportunity to appear on live television. THE BORO’S MUSIC SCENE... BROUGHT TO YOU BY FREE LUNCH ENTERTAINMENT It’s always nice to meet someone who is passionate about what they do. You can see it in their eyes as they describe to you their visions for the future. They also have a sense of pride in their visions, because they so whole heartily believe in them. Allen Roper, co-founder of Free Lunch Entertainment of Statesboro, GA is a man with a vision to believe in. He, along with other co-founders Richard Chamberlain (of Tent City) and Logan Wallis (also of Tent City), are setting out to put Statesboro on the map, musically speaking. “There is not a real music scene in Statesboro. People go to places with live music, but they don’t go to places FOR the live music. We want to change that” Allen told me over drinks at Gnat’s, “Free Lunch is trying to build something from the ground up with our bare hands. There is so much potential here and people are catching wind.” A recent graduate of Georgia Southern, Mr. Roper knows Statesboro and knows that we are ready to expand our live music horizons. “I bleed blue and white,” he told me, “and I know that Free Lunch Entertainment can make something happen here.” Free Lunch works to connect musicians with venues and vice versa. They book gigs and help make shows happen all over the Southeast. Or, as Allen puts it “We’re your friendly neighborhood booking outlet.” Lots of band managers are starting to notice that Statesboro is here. We are like a hidden treasure; an untapped market. We are thriving with thousands of young concert goers, we have lots of venues, and we are right between Atlanta and Savannah. Yet, we are seemingly unexplored, musically speaking. Free Lunch Entertainment wants to make Statesboro a stopping place for all the best bands. They have dreams of creating larger venues and finding space to hold a music festival as big as Wanee or Wakarusa. “Our last festival, Dam Jam, was great” says Allen, “But, we’d like to have something bigger, where people can camp out and listen to great music all weekend.” The best part, in my opinion, is that with Free Lunch Entertainment, you not only get shows, you get badass shows of high sound and performance quality. The Free Lunch team selects the artists that they work with by studying their sound and doing research on their past shows and recordings. “I don’t apologize for quality. We have standards, and while we are not rude, we will not accept anything below our standards” explains Roper who believes honesty and integrity are the backbone of any business deal. And the acts who make the cut? Well, you probably know a few of them: Eric Dodd (out of Atlanta), Tent City (Statesboro & Athens), Jazz Chronic (Athens), Mama’s Love (Athens), Those Cats (Statesboro), Betsy & the Bare Knuckle Band (Athens), Lefty Hathaway (Athens), and many more. Free Lunch Entertainment has come a long way since booking their first show in 2010 at Rude Rudy’s. Now, they are involved with local venues such as Buffalo’s, Dingus Magee’s, and Gnat’s. “There’s no better feeling in the world than being at a show, seeing how much the band and the audience are digging it, and knowing that I helped bring these people together to have a good time” says Allen, and the way he talks, I believe it. Visit Free Lunch Entertainment (the Company) on facebook to learn more about what they’ve got going on every weekend here in Statesboro. Between the 11th Hour Statesboro page and the Free Lunch Entertainment page, you should not have a dull moment in Statesboro ever again. If you are a musician interested in hooking up with Free Lunch Entertainment, contact Allen Roper at allensroper12@gmail.com or go to Free Lunch Entertainment (the Group) on facebook. The Group page is strictly for musicians interested in finding gigs and communicating with other local musicians.
"Tent City is the heart of Free Lunch Entertainment. I found my outlet and I'm doing what I love. Good music and good people. That's what I love." - Allen Roper, FOUNDER OF FREE LUNCH

Coconut Thai: Asian Fusion Revamped For Students
A
s the first Thai restaurant in the ‘Boro, Coconut Thai enriches each customer culturally the moment they open the door. Although the restaurant has only been open a few years, they decided to do some menu reconstructon to cater more effectively to the clientele in the area. The menus as well as the appearance of the restaurant have undergone some major changes. The owner, Calvin Phan, created this restaurant to share his family recipes and offer Statesboro an alternative to fast food. Everything is produced organically and the seafood is never frozen before cooked. Each customer is greeted warmly as they make their way to their table. According to Ryan Blalock, manager for Coconut Thai, “Phan just wants everyone to have an enjoyable eating experience.” They want each customer to have a personal experience; Blalock even said that they know most of their customers by name. Restaurant changes include the look and layout, as well as some of the recipes that now encompass all types of Asian cuisine, not just Thai. They also have a new chalkboard wall, which they change weekly to let customers know what Coconut Thai has to offer. A new and popular item on their menu served for just five bucks every Monday is Korean dish called Chops and Hops. For five bucks you get a pork chop meal with a 32 ounce glass of the beer of your choice. They now offer about six different mixed drinks and six different beer mixtures. The beer mixtures are combina-
tions of Thai beer with other familiar/American beers. One example of these beer mixtures is called Blue Water, which is a mix of Blue Moon and Sweet Water. Have you seen a Guerilla mascot that hands out flyers on the Georgia Southern University campus? Well, in an effort to be more student- friendly, many of the items on the menu have decreased in price. I was pleasantly surprised when I entered the restaurant and noticed the price drops. Like me, many other college students couldn’t afford to come to Coconut Thai often, but with the new changes I look forward to it. Although many people still come in for soups and salad, they also carry Sake Bombs. Sake Bombs are a combination of beer mixed with a shot of sake; it is a balance game using chop sticks often played at the bar. Many of the popular items on the menu remain, like the Coconut cake, Fuji Apples, and their hand made Sangria which is known as the best in the ‘Boro. “Many people come in for the Pineapple Fried Rice, which is served in a pineapple shell,” said Blalock. Coconut Thai provides a cultural experience and customers get to enjoy great food in the process. They use fresh ingredients and provide the customer with an experience they can’t get anywhere else in the ‘Boro. Coconut Thai is worth trying at least once, but warning, once you taste it you will be coming back for more.

SCENE ration between The Black Keys and Damon Dash and will feature a host of rappers to emcee the album. A press release for TV On The Radio has announced the band will release a live EP, World Café Live, on Sept. 6. The EP, which includes five songs, was originally recorded for NPR’s World Café program. According to Mashable, Facebook will be launching its rumored music platform next month, with an official announcement coming at the social networking company’s f8 developer conference on the 22nd of this month. Inside sources say that that Facebook won’t directly host any music themselves, but rather will depend on partnered services to provide content. So far, Spotify, MOG and Rdio have been revealed as launch partners for the service.
Blakroc was The Black Keys’ hip-hop project, and combined rock/blues beats with vocals from some of the best rappers in the game.
Last Friday the Wall Street Journal reported that Gibson Guitar Corporation was raided by federal officials. The raid resulted in a confiscation of wood, guitars and files. At the time of the raid, Gibson responded immediately, revealing that the pressing issue was environmental: “The wood the government seized Wednesday is from a Forest Stewardship Council certified supplier,” Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz
said. While the feds have been quiet on the matter, NPR reported that it looks like the government is preparing to charge Gibson with trafficking wood that was obtained illegally. Having finished up recording their followup to 2010’s Brothers with Danger Mouse, the Grammy-winning duo is now working on their collaborative hip hop project, BlakRoc. This second go at the BlakRoc project will again be a collabo-
Glen Campbell may be best known for his hit “Rhinestone Cowboy,” but the country-pop singer has had a more extensive career than a few hits. He’s worked with artists such as The Monkees, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Now a biopic about his life is in the works and it will involve James Keach, the man who produced the award-winning Johnny Cash film, Walk the Line. The two films might be
more similar than people think. Campbell dealt with substance abuse and marital problems. Perhaps the biggest difference is how big of a star Cash was compared to Campbell. David Bowie’s 1969 space rock classic “Space Oddity” has been illustrated as a children’s book by artist Andrew Kolb. The images are set to the lyrics of the song, which details the story of fictional astronaut Major Tom. Probably the only thing that Jack White and Insane Clown Posse used to have in common was that they both had roots in Detroit. Sadly, that is no longer true— in a horrific turn of events, Jack White has produced an Insane Clown Posse song about ass licking. While it was unclear whether the producer wandered into the wrong studio, a press release confirms that White collaborated with the face-painted duo, one song called “Leck Mich Im Arsch,” (which the press release says translates to “Lick me in the arse.”)
