EDITOR’S NOTES

I

by AMY MERRITT

’ve been painting my apartment for a couple of days now. Netflix has been running non-stop to occupy my brain while I do the monotonous and painstaking work. Last night I stumbled upon a documentary called 2012: Time for Change, and as I stroked maroon onto my previously drab walls, I began to learn that the world is going to collapse very soon unless everyone trips on psychedelics and becomes self-actualized. IMDb says, “2012: Time For Change is a documentary feature that presents ways to transform our unsustainable society into a regenerative planetary culture. This can be achieved through a personal and global change of consciousness and the systemic implementation of ecological design.” Let the differences in my and IMDb’s descriptions of the documentary tell you one thing: It handles a wide variety of subjects. A wide, wide variety… To Daniel Pinchbeck (a major contributor to the film), if you want to believe that Ellen Page (of Inception and Juno) seriously washes her clothes

THE FAMED TRIPLE OPTION

T

he Georgia Southern Eagles are famous for their historic use of the triple option offense. Ask any diehard Eagle fan in the Statesboro area, and I guarantee they will be more than happy to tell you all of the intricacies of this offensive attack. What about the fans who simply don’t know what the triple option is? I know you would like to think that there is no way one could call themselves a true fan of Georgia Southern football, and not know about the triple option. Unfortunately, such fans do exist. No worries though! The purpose of this article is to simply inform those who don’t know, and to entertain those who know the triple option like the back of their hands. The triple option is really a very easy offense to learn. It is one of my personal favorites to see being ran to perfection. It all starts with having a great coach who knows all of the ins and outs of the offense. The typical option offense lines up the same way every snap. You have the quarterback

directly under the center awaiting the snap. Behind the quarterback awaits the fullback in a three point stance. The fullback is the primary ball carrier in any option attack. Last, but not least, you have two running backs lined up to the left and right of the fullback. Once the quarterback hikes the ball he has several decisions to make. In most cases, the quarterback will simply hand the ball off to moving fullback and let him do what he can. If the quarterback decides against the handoff, he has two more choices. He can either pitch the ball to a running back or keep it himself. That, my friends, is the triple option in a nutshell! In a recent Georgia Southern football game against Western Carolina, the Eagles executed to triple option to perfection on their way to racking up an amazing 634 yards rushing against the Catamount defense on their way to a 52-20 blowout victory. After 3 games, Georgia Southern has outscored opponents 145-58 while scoring 48.3 points per game. Anthony L. Brown, II

CHALK TALK

MEET THE ARTIST BEHIND THE COLORFUL STREET ART GRACING OUR SIDEWALKS is white shirt and black pants lightly bear a blend of colors, similar to an art pallet. His hands have formed calluses to act as a protective shield from the sandpaper pavement that is his canvas. Beside him is his chalk supplies, an assortment of colors, sizes, and types. His almond colored top hat is placed upside down, with black written letters that read “Tips.” The irritating gnats have finally passed, the streetlights illuminate the sidewalk, cars pass by and the area is becoming full of activity: this is his art studio. The Statesboro night scene is typically full of energy and spirit but recently, the scene has become colorful too. Chalk art has begun to appear on the sidewalks, primarily between Lanier Drive and Georgia Avenue. The artist behind these colorful pieces is 35-year-old Daniel Wair. Daniel and his fiancé recently moved here from Atlanta this June when his fiancé got a job teaching for Georgia Southern University in the Department of Communication Arts. Over the past few months, Daniel has been happily surprised with the positive reactions he has gotten for his work. “I get a lot of people who stop to talk and tell me how they love it. I wasn’t sure how people were going to take it but everybody’s been really awesome. It’s been surprisingly accepting here.” Daniel’s art background originally started with theater. It was not until ten years ago while in college that he picked up a sketchbook and started drawing seriously. His only professional

me from my sketchbook.” A typical session for Daniel begins around 10 p.m., not because he wants to avoid the heat during the day, but because he cannot stand the gnats. On average, each piece takes him three to four hours to finish. Simpler pieces can be finished in an hour, while detailed pieces can last

art lesson was an introduction drawing class. Daniel began experimenting with chalk art five years ago in Atlanta. His first piece was an oversized Brian from Family Guy with a martini glass in his hand. After seeing the work of professional chalk artists Julian Beever and Kurt Wenner on the Internet, Daniel instantly became interested and wanted to try it. His black 3X4 sketchbook contains all of his drawings and ideas for pieces. He enjoys animated designs, similar to American cartoonist Matt Groening’s style. There is no real strategy to what piece Daniel decides to draw each night. “Every once in awhile I’ll go out with something in mind but usually it’s just whatever strikes

him over five hours. He has collected an array of chalk over the past five years. Most of his collection consists of Crayola chalk he gets from Walmart or dollar stores. Other chalk consists of paper chalks, which are his brighter colors. Charcoals make up the rest of his collection, which are used for shading, outlining, and other line work. He uses about two or three sticks of the bulky Crayola chalk, half of a piece of paper chalk, and half of a piece of charcoal for each design. When Daniel finishes a piece, he gently sprays water on the top. This is the last step of the process. The water acts as a seal to the chalk, adding the last blend, so once it dries off, people can walk or ride bikes over it and it won’t damage the piece. Daniel will usually do two pieces a night, depending on the scale of detail. His schedule for his sidewalk art is best suited for the weekend when he has the most free time. He gen-

erally spaces his sessions out, allowing his hands to rest. “After three nights in a row, I just can’t do it anymore. The sidewalk rubs my fingers really raw. When I first started doing this, before my hands got used to it, after about three hours I could see where the chalk was moist because it was so raw. I’m missing fingerprints on a couple fingers.” Daniel’s tried alternatives to relieve his hands. After researching, he saw an idea that suggested using the felt strips from old chalk erasers for blending. He has also tried using gloves, but the pavement eats right through them. One pair of gloves is needed per piece. Over the five years of his chalk art experience, Daniel has preferred building calluses on his bare hands because he enjoys the feel of the sidewalk. It is part of the experience. As long as the weather allows for it and he has the time, Daniel tries to chalk as much as he can. His pieces usually last until it rains hard enough to wash the chalk away. He doesn’t mind losing any of his pieces to the rain though. To him, it is just part of the process. “The rain just gives me a blank canvas and I can just start over again.” Daniel aspires to take his art to New York City one day and fill the streets of Manhattan with his artwork. It is just a matter of time and money until he makes his trip to what he calls the “ultimate city.” For the time being however, the biggest payoff for Daniel is seeing people’s encouraging reactions and watching them snap pictures. He never signs his pieces because he likes the sense of anonymity of it, but it is always rewarding when he walks down the street and hears people talking about his art. “If I could do this professionally, this would be the dream.” DANAE KAIMULOA
