Summer Edition 2022

Headteacher's Welcome Sarah Bonnell News is a great way for the school to celebrate the many enrichment opportunities on offer at school. These extra opportunities give students the chance to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence in a different context to the classroom. But it is also important to recognise that what goes on in the classroom every lesson, every day and every week is also important to celebrate.. Of course, I was blown away by the quality and variety of the musical performances in the Summer Concert , the erudite confidence of our Debate Team and the progress of our Greenhouse Tennis players but I am equally impressed by the quality of the learning I see when I visit everyday lessons in school.

Students and staff have worked incredibly hard this term and I hope you will join me in celebrating the achievements captured here in SBS News and the ones you can't read about that are part of the everyday magic of Sarah Bonnell.

Training for JPSOC for Year 10 and Sarah Bonnell Hosting the Regional finals! The Year 10 cohort were mentored in the art of public speaking and debate on one of our Enhanced learning Days. Students all took part in an amazing speak out workshop delivered by Speakers trust. One to two students from each form then went on to take part in the assembly finals held in school with a panel of judges at Sarah Bonnell. First place went to Elianah Enaharo and Second place went to Meerub Anjum Mir. Hosting the Finals for 2022 Miriam Remmache won the regional finals last year which then meant we could host the finals for 2022. It was a real privilege to host such a wonderful event with an array of talent across Newham Schools. Both Meerub and Elianah performed their speeches along with other regional finalist in front of an audience and Judging panel. It was a fantastic evening. Elianah clinched 3rd place in Newham. Well done.

Some of our fantastic team behind the scene. Couldn’t have done it without them!

SB Ambassadors - peer mentoring programme In December and February this year we ran our Peer Mentoring training for selected KS3 SB Way ambassadors. They learnt a range of skills such as active listening, how to identify the needs we all have using Maslow’s hierarchy as a guide, and how to carry out a successful peer mentoring session. These students will now be meeting their mentees in the Summer term. Here’s what some of the girls had to say about this opportunity: “My experience of being trained to be a peer mentor increased my level of confidence and empowerment. I felt positive and gained the quality to support others’ improvement or development. It boosted my professional and personal self-worth. I was able to learn how I can deal with confidential issues and give advice which built my inner confidence and honesty.” Zafreen Chowdhury 8D. “Being a SB Way Ambassador means alot to me. Compared to other leadership roles I’ve had, being an Ambassador is my biggest one yet. I’ve really enjoyed participating in managing Piazza Moments and leading our recent ELD, International Women’s Day. Most of all, I’m really happy about the peer mentoring sessions that are coming up. As a year 7 student, I’m really fortunate to have an opportunity like these. I’m looking forward to starting my peer mentoring sessions - I’ll have a chance to meet new people, make friends, improve my social skills and have something to praise about later in the future. This has had a great impact on me, because it’s improving my social and communication skills - something I’ve never really thought I’ll need much until now. Thank you for giving me an exciting chance like this!” Haadiyah Pandor 7B. “As a SB Way Ambassador, I’ve had the privilege of participating in many different amazing opportunities. It all started with my Peer Mentoring Training on ELD, which taught me how to become a mentor for my peers, and understand how they feel about their mental health and emotions. It was an experience that enabled me to explore new avenues on how to speak to people in a respectful manner, whilst learning more about them and seeing how they feel in the process. Another thing that I did as part of my role was prepare and plan the activities taking place in the piazza on International Womens’ Day. This included researching inspirational women and creating information sheets on them. It was due to us ambassadors that we were able to execute the slam poetry and photography during lunchtime, which was a great success”. Subaha Saif, 7N “On Tuesday 8th March 2022, I attended a peer mentor training. I felt special you could say as only a few members were allowed to attend the session. (SB way Ambassadors) I didn't know most of my peers but doing activities with them made me learn more than I did before. I can't wait to work with new students as I've learnt more on how to help students. I would love to say thank you to Ms Flowers for her help and support! As an SB Way ambassador, you don't only do peer mentoring but you also lead activities! During February 2022, some of my fellow peers and including myself were leading piazza activities. You have a big role as an SB way ambassador, you're a role model for the school, you show and represent what Sarah Bonnell School is as a whole. I'm so grateful and thankful for how I came this far and became one of these people.” Sayma Jamal, 8R

VR Immersive Experience Heritage 5G in conjunction with Newham-based, Hyperactive Developments and Immersive Computing Labs delivered an intensive workshop for Sarah Bonnell students to gain exposure to using immersive technologies as part of Heritage learning and content creation. Greenhouse Tennis In the last few months, the students have improved so much with their tennis. We now have three clubs starting at 7.30am as well as three after school. This is such a hard sport to learn from a beginner level, and the girls are doing so well. There are a collection of Year 8’s & 9’s who are playing three times a week and have moved onto the adult yellow ball. The girls participated in local school leagues last term and the aforementioned students played an internal tournament. The finalists were Justine Martinsone (8N) and Neda Tarrach (9N) The other participants were:

Year 9: Year 8: Evelina Ismaili Michelle Aneesa Miah-Choudhury Adjei Aishah Gordon Aaisha Ali Whatever the weather, all the girls in the programme are always keen to participate which is testament to their growth in resilience. It has also been brilliant to witness blossoming friendships between girls in different year groups, some of whom are playing tennis in local parks at weekends.

Step into Sport Leadership Camp Congratulations to Fatou Kolley (8A), Sumayah Khan (8L), Milan Abagun (8L) and Hibatullah Meah (8L) for all of their hard work and successes at the Step into Sport Leadership Camp. The day was a great opportunity to learn lots of different leadership skills and put these into practice with other students from schools around Newham. It was great to see friendships being built with fellow students that developed throughout the day. We were also lucky enough to meet Katerina Johnson-Thompson and speak with her about leadership and all of her work that she does as an elite athlete.

Cricket at Sarah Bonnell There was fantastic enthusiasm for cricket from year 7 to year 10. There have been fixtures for year 7 & 8 and 9 & 10 which were against Brampton Manor Academy and St. Angela’s. There were some fantastic efforts from all students. Well done to all students who took part!

Geography Rivers GCSE investigation On the 7th of February, Year 10 GCSE Geographers embarked on their ‘Rivers’ investigation to investigate downstream changes along Loughton Brook, Essex. Rivers are popular locations for completing geographical investigations. This is because they are dynamic systems, which means they are constantly changing. Their aim was to test trends against the theory on the ‘Bradshaw model’ that all rivers get wider, deeper, flatter and faster as they move along the channel. It was found that these trends were false, using a variety of data collection methods and equipment to reach their conclusions. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the investigation, including the lessons which consolidated most of their new found skills. Congratulations to the Year 10s for completing their ‘Physical Geography’ requirement for GCSE Geography a few months ago.

Geography ‘Stratford Regeneration’ GCSE investigation On the 29th/30th of June, Year 10 GCSE Geographers embarked on their ‘Urban’ investigation to investigate regeneration and social improvements since the 2012 London Olympic Games. Their aim was to explore whether Stratford had upgraded and rejuvenated since the Olympic games, both socially/economically and environmentally. Pupils gained a plethora of knowledge, using a variety of techniques to obtain robust and relevant data. These included questionnaires, environmental and quality of life surveys, field-sketches and photographs to gain both qualitative and quantitative primary evidence. In the next few weeks, pupils will be demonstrating their skills within lesson time to assess whether their data reaches accurate and reliable conclusions. Mr Mathews

Sarah Bonnell’s budding young scientists have been showcasing their innovative and enthusiastic efforts in a variety of projects and experiments in Science Fun Club. They have been investigating applications of Science in everyday life and creating models, recipes representing this. Our Scientists have been designing and creating rockets, evaluating these models and discussing the requirements for an effective rocket. They have made bath bombs, perfume, slime and created their own rainbows. The images also show a banana DNA extraction and our scientists creating a model of our solar system identifying and analyzing the sizes and effects of different planets.
