Headteacher's HWelcome eadteacher's Welcome

When Sarah Bonnell, the founder of this school, died in 1769 she left £1500 to build a school for the girls of East Ham . In those days this was a huge amount of money and she hoped it would give girls the opportunity to gain an education that would help them have better lives. Today, the vision for our school builds on her legacy: to provide students with a whole experience of school that empowers them with the knowledge, skills and emotional resilience to enhance their own lives and the lives of others’.

As a girls only school we are in a unique position to do this There are fewer than 200 state girls schools This vision to empower young women really does drive everything we do at the school and I was delighted to get an email from a parent of one of our Year 11 leavers which I feel strongly reflects our success with this. They wrote to me in September to thank the school and explained "My daughter has left Sarah Bonnell as a strong and resilient young woman with life skills that go way beyond the national curriculum expectations " I am sure Sarah Bonnell would be proud !

Less likely to conform to gender stereotypes. Less constrained in their choice of subjects Show a greater likelihood to innovate and take risks with their learning Perform better in examinations Have more opportunities to show leadership Are more successful in the job market

This edition of Sarah Bonnell News demonstrates the benefits of attending a girls’ school even further by spotlighting some of the best achievements of our students and the meaningful opportunities provided for them to learn and develop as young people.

Rae Potter Headteacher in the UK and being one of the oldest means we are experts in how girls learn. Our approach is based upon the belief that girls learn better, achieve better and have better opportunities to be empowered in a girls only school. This is not just a belief, it is backed up by research from a number of sources that shows that girls who attend girls only schools are:

At Sarah Bonnell we aim to create a space where girls can develop and grow into strong independent women. We are given the tools we need to prepare for the real world such as being taught by skilled staff members who continue to push us in our journey, and having lessons based on our diverse learning curriculum.

As we prepare ourselves for the future we are always given the opportunity for freedom of speech. The students here understand that their words can echo positivity and greatness. Our voices matter and they have had a huge impact which has led to our success as a school and a wider community.

Here at Sarah Bonnell we build a positive mindset and participate in enhanced learning days to motivate the students to build their self confidence. As a girls school we are keen on celebrating success and emphasising unity and embrace this by championing each other.

As the current head girl I aim to amplify the message of resilience and that by thinking positively about ourselves we can face the obstacles that challenge us. Every student that achieves both big and small accomplishments should be applauded for their own

the Sarah Bonnell values, I want to implement my motto “Strength in yourself, strength in each other, stronger together.” to the daily life of the students so they feel a sense of belonging and community that they are proud of. Sarah Bonnell School is celebrating their best ever GCSE results with even better outcomes for young people in all the key headline measures.

Schoo would recognise the challenges faced by this cohort of young people during the partial closure of schools caused by the Covid pandemic and that Exam Boards would set Grade Boundaries for the 2022 GCSEs that would result in grades nationally being better than the GCSE examination results of 2019 but not as strong as the Teacher Assessed Grades of 2021. At Sarah Bonnell the results have surpassed this expectation with an increase in all headline measures

.

77% gained Grade 4 and above in GCSE English and Maths (up 8% from 2019) and 62% gained Grade 5 and above in English and Maths (up 13 % from 2019). 85% of our students achieved GCSE Grade 5 and above in English Literature and 63% achieved GCSE Grade 5 and above in Maths. The overall Attainment 8 score has risen to 57.2 (up from 53.6 in 2019).

There have been many impressive individual achievements with students securing places at our local Newham Sixth Form colleges as well as some of our partner Independent Colleges.

For example Eshal Vohra and Miriam Remache gained an impressive perfect Attainment 8 Score of 90 by securing GCSE Grade 9 in all ten GCSEs subjects. Miriam is going to study A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Biology and Chemistry at Newham Collegiate Sixth Form and Eshal is also going to NCS to study Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Psychology.

Saffiya Bazan achieved Grade 9 in English Language, English Literature, Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Drama, Arabic and Grade 8 in Religious Studies and History. Saffiya is going to study Biology, Chemistry , Maths and English Literature at London Academy of Excellence.

Alishba Ali also achieved an excellent set of GCSE results and is now going to study at Queens College London a prestigious Independent Day school for girls that has a special partnership with Sarah Bonnell School. Queens College provides three students every year an opportunity for a fully funded place to attend the college for Key Stage 5.

Roman Malik joined the school in Year 8 speaking very little English. Roman and her family celebrated great results today achieving 8 GCSEs Grade 5 and above including Grade 7 in English Literature and Grade 9 in Art and Urdu Roman said ‘ I feel proud of myself for getting this much The teachers at Sarah Bonnell helped me alot’

It has been wonderful to celebrate an impressive set of GCSE results with our students and their families this morning. There were lots of smiling faces and a few tears of joy and relief. This year group has faced the ongoing challenges of a global pandemic with resilience. Sarah Bonnell students are known for being ambitious, hard working and resilient and these results show that this reputation is well deserved Staff have also worked incredibly hard to ensure students have been supported to achieve the very best results I am very proud of the fact that our GCSE success goes hand in hand with providing a wide range of opportunities and experiences that help our students develop as well rounded and confident young people. I know they will go on to the next stage of their education with skills and qualities that will support them to continue to achieve and contribute positively to our community.

On Tuesday 1st February 2022, we were proud to celebrate our first World Hijab Day at Sarah Bonnell, exploring this year’s theme: “Break the Bias” and ‘Hijab is my Crown.’

During the week, Ms Sahebdin along with students from Year 7-11 delivered an incredibly inspiring assembly. Ms Sahebdin shared her personal and moving story about how hijab originally became part of Sarah Bonnell School’s uniform and students clearly articulate why we celebrated World Hijab Day and how it promoted our Sarah Bonnell

Motto: Be Proud. A range of activities were held at lunchtime where students and teachers supported World Hijab Day by creating and holding up pledges and adorning hijabs and crowns.

- Bibi Ms Sahebdin

“World Hijab Day is an event that we should be proud of celebrating, not just for religious tolerance but for women’s rights around the world.”

On Friday 4 March Ms Potter, Headteacher, and Mr Begley, Assistant Headteacher, gathered together 30 budding Chess players to meet Jennifer Shahade . Jennifer is two times US Women's Chess Champion and Grandmaster and she inspired them with her own success story and stories about other trailblazing ‘chess queens‘. Jennifer also gave each student a signed copy of her book of the same name about the gender stereotypes women face in the chess world and the brilliance of the great female Grandmasters of chess like Vera Menchek and the Polgar sisters. The students were given a masterclass in the game and used the skills they had gained in playing each other.

The school would like to thank Jennifer for inspiring the girls with her visit and to thank Alex O’Brien for her generous sponsorship of the event - buying the school 30 new chess sets and a copy of Jennifer Shahade’s interesting book ‘Chess Queens’ for every student.

Training for JPSOC for Year 10 and Sarah Bonnell Hosting the Regional finals!

The Year 10 cohort were mentored in the art of public speaking and debate on one of our Enhanced learning Days. Students all took part in an amazing speak out workshop delivered by Speakers trust. One to two students from each form then went on to take part in the assembly finals held in school with a panel of judges at Sarah Bonnell. First place went to Elianah Enaharo and Second place went to Meerub Anjum Mir.

Hosting the Finals for 2022 Miriam Remmache won the regional finals last year which then meant we could host the finals for 2022 It was a real privilege to host such a wonderful event with an array of talent across Newham Schools. Both Meerub and Elianah performed their speeches along with other regional finalist in front of an audience and Judging panel. It was a fantastic evening.

Elianah clinched 3rd place in Newham. Well done.

Some of our fantastic team behind the scene. Couldn’t have done it without them!

In the last few months, the students have improved so much with their tennis. We now have three clubs starting at 7.30am as well as three after school. This is such a hard sport to learn from a beginner level, and the girls are doing so well.

There are a collection of Year 8’s & 9’s who are playing three times a week and have moved onto the adult yellow ball The girls participated in local school leagues last term and the aforementioned students played an internal tournament The finalists were Justine Martinsone (8N) and Neda Tarrach (9N)

Year 8: Michelle Adjei

Whatever the weather, all the girls in the programme are always keen to participate which is testament to their growth in resilience. It has also been brilliant to witness blossoming friendships between girls in different year groups, some of whom are playing tennis in local parks at weekends.

WORLD BOOK DAY 2022

Thursday 3rd March saw the 25th anniversary of World Book Day. Staff and students dressed up for the day in book characters and we saw some incredible costumes. Oliver Twist, Katniss Everdeen, Alice in Wonderland, Skulduggery, Laura Ingles, Gangsta Granny, Frodo Baggins, Sherlock Holmes and Cruella De Vil to name but a few.

The Learning Hub was once again the centre of the celebrations and hosted a fair made up of genre-based stalls. The Classics, Mystery, Romance, Crime and Fantasy stands were professionally run by KS3 Learning Hub Ambassadors and KS4 helpers who were just as enthused as the participants. Students had the opportunity to compete in games and activities for prizes by putting their book knowledge to the test. Battling against the clock to get as many correct answers as possible, there was a frantic rush to be the winner!

WBD would not be complete without the Treasure Hunt competition which saw entries from across all year groups. The very deserving winners were Humaira Yasmin & Rodoshi Khanam Salim 11D. The design a Book Bag competition was also a success and I had the impossible task of judging the winning entries. After much deliberation our winners were Zafreen Chowdhury 8D & Kelly Ochlan 7B who will see their designs printed on book bags and distributed to the school community. As always Kindle Fires were up for grabs and all our First Prize winners received one. Our genre-based stall winners won books, badges & bookmarks along with all our SEND entrants.

A great day was had by the whole school community leaving everyone look forward to World Book Day 2023!

On Friday 25th February a group of aspiring Year 8 engineers took part in the annual Faraday competition. Students were tasked to create a product that would help children in hospital feel comfortable. There were many designs created and the students' imagination and creativity was incredible to see. There was ofcourse a winning group who received £10 shopping vouchers, certificates and the winning trophy for the school! Well done to all who participated in this amazing event.

On Tuesday the 15th March 2022 Year 9 students were involved in a brand new DeepMind Artificial Intelligence technology workshop. Students were thinking about Ai Technology and how this has an impact on our everyday lives. They were also tasked to create solutions for everyday situations we face everyday such as ‘waste management’. Year 9 coded and tested robots which could hold and lift cans, bottles and paper cups. Students were fully engaged in the workshop and enjoyed the robots and live lab tour they had of the DeepMind head office.
