Named after traditional English apple varieties, as the site is adjacent to orchards that have been tended by the Peake family over the last 70 years, our lodges have been carefully hand-built, and nestle perfectly within their idyllic wooded landscape.
The lodges feature natural cedar tiles on the rooves, which age to a beautiful silver grey, and the exterior walls are clad with Iroko wood sourced from sustainable forests. Each eco-lodge is fitted with photovoltaic and solar panels as well as air source heat pumps, which together provide 100% of the green energy supply required for their underfloor heating, lighting, and hot water.
In recognition of all of these initiatives, the team is proud to have won several environmental awards and to have become an “Anglian Green 100 Business"

INTERIOR INSPIRATION
The Brief: to create a timeless light, bright, luxurious, practical, flexible and non-gender specific five-star level interior.
The Apple Tree Lodges site was used as a hostel to house the land army women working on the local farmland during the Second World War. All but one of the buildings (viewing tower – previously a water tower) have now been demolished. I wanted to pay homage to these inspirational, hard-working women by reflecting some elements of 1940s design into the interiors of the new lodges.
The recruitment posters portrayed a fun, healthy outdoor existence, thus suggesting life in the country would be something of a holiday. I find it quite apt that the hostel site has become a destination for exactly that!
1940s DESIGN
The 1940s was an era of sharp smart fashion tailoring, feminine shape and glamorous textures During the war years design was suppressed but 1945 onwards saw a revolution in both the fashion and interior design sectors as Britain looked forward to a bright future.
“We did not get television until 1949 before that, our idols were often very glamorous Remember women’s clothes from the 1940s – their hats and tailored suits and gloves and bags and hose, the whole very puttogether thing? That’s the look I think of for 1940s bedrooms and living rooms – formal, very put together ” - Retro Movement
Interior design of the 1940s took its lead from the late 1930s Art Deco style with geometric patterns sitting alongside feminine curves. Colours were generally slightly muted, with pinks, greens and blue all having a slightly grey hue Beige was a popular colour of choice. Materials were solid and dependable, natural woods, stone, metal and glass providing a sense of longevity and security after the uncertain war years.
The style of the late 1940s kitchen was simple with clean sleek lines and flat fronted units. Disease was common post war with soldiers bringing back polio, malaria, typhus and yellow fever; by having a simple clean bright kitchen cleaning was made easier and disease seemed less likely

APPLE TREE LODGES INTERIORS
Britain was greatly influenced post war by America and Hollywood glamour. I wanted to capture this buzz of chic elegance, excitement and luxury within the lodges I aimed to achieve a contemporary look to suit our living style today but with a nod back to the design style of the late 1940s
I have approached this by using large mirrors, generously sized furniture, walnut wood finishes, a favoured wood of the time mixed with darker richer woods Geometric patterns, a mixture of curves and hard lines
In the lounges I’ve used a mixture of walnut and mirror on the AV sideboard to add a feeling of luxury, the combination of the curved lines of the mirror and the angular lines of the unit soften and feminise thi large piece of furniture This mixture of form an material is echoed again in the design of the dinin table which has an Art Deco square stepped design t the pedestal leg finished in wenge with a walnut top The curved corners of the table top soften the piec and again you see this fantastic mix of hard and sof lines together
The dining chairs are a reproduction of the series Butterfly chair designed by Arne Jacobsen (architect and designer) and Fritz Hansen The design cooperation between these men and dates back to 1934, their work was fluid and mould-breaking at the time Although launched in 1955 it is by far the most sold chair in the history of Fritz Hansen and encapsulates his design style shown in the 1940’s I love the mixture of materials and the iconic feminine curve of the back The four-legged stackable chair can be seen as the culmination of the use of the lamination technique A technique refined to perfection during the Twenties and Thirties by S C Hansen, the grandson of the founder, Fritz Hansen.
The coffee table is a replica of a piece designed by Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988), son of an American writer and a Japanese Poet. Noguchi was one of the most celebrated sculptors of the 20th century First introduced in 1947, the Noguchi Coffee Table is a true icon, and is unique in its appeal as the design is both sculpture and furniture
The bespoke carpet sections, luxurious fabrics used for the scatter cushions, the floor standing tripod light which emulates a Hollywood film spotlight, the glass chandeliers along with the mixed material door handles all work together to add a feeling of indulgence and sophistication
The sofas and armchairs have been designed based on images of original 1940s pieces of furniture; these again combined a fluid relationship between straight and curved lines Deep buttoning was extremely popular, we used this technique in the master bedroom storage benches and headboards
To me these chairs are quite symbolic of the land army women; slim, feminine but practical, strong and robust.
INTERIOR INSPIRATION
I’ve purposefully kept the window dressings simple and discreet to maximise the views surrounding the lodges The use of pattern or bright colour would have automatically halted the line of sight at the window frame rather than looking past to the landscape beyond I have used natural fabrics at the windows they help to link the interior design to the surrounding countryside
The bespoke pieces of artwork within the lodges have been handmade by Vintage Playing Cards They use cards from original vintage games and 1920s parlour games that have been individually sourced We have chosen popular war songs which we felt were an accolade to our land army girls, such as "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree", "Goodnight Sweetheart", “We'll Meet Again”, and others appropriate to the lodge setting such as "When I’m Cleaning Windows", "Run Rabbit Run" and "That Lovely Weekend". These pieces are stylish, retro and unique - each a true original.
I hope you find the combination of modern architecture and technology coupled with design influences from the past a relaxing and enjoyable environment to spend some precious time.
