Friends,

As you read through our Annual Report, I hope you will join us in celebrating our many accomplishments and successes. We are proud of our impact - our mission ‘to support family and neighborhood life in South Boston’ remains significant Our participants – seniors, families, teens and children – come from all backgrounds and many are living with some of life’s toughest challenges. We continue to meet them where they are and work together to rise and overcome!

We remain focused on our priorities: to positively impact the lives of those in our community; to meet the needs of families and individuals experiencing social and economic stress; to be a resource and advocate for our community’s most vulnerable and isolated residents; to promote and develop early literacy, academic success, healthy families, social and life skills, health, wellness and independent living for all our participants. We do this through innovative, highquality, engaging programming in six program areas and we do this successfully through partnerships and collaborations

We are grateful to so many who helped make South Boston Neighborhood House the vibrant, impactful and extraordinary organization it remains after 124 years of serving this community. There is always more work to do! Please continue to stand with us as we build upon our strategic priorities and plan for SBNH’s future.

Sincerely,

Early Education & Care Boston Pre-K Program

Since 2017, our partnership with Boston Public Schools (BPS) has made a considerable impact on the children and families we serve in our Boston Pre-K classrooms

Our Boston Pre-K students learn from the Focus on Pre-K curriculum - a nationally acclaimed, play-based curriculum focused on early literacy and whole-child development, developed by the Boston Public Schools’ Department of Early Childhood

SBNH has received above average scores on Fidelity, the research-based tool developed to measure outcomes of the BPS Focus on Pre-K curriculum

Education & Center Development Program

54 local youth took part in professional development trainings, life-skills workshops and academic supports focused on preparing them for successful education and career development

34 youth participated in SLIP which includes college and career activities; 30 youth participated in school year trainings including college and career readiness skills, time management, financial literacy, and college and post-secondary training and career exploration Overall, 100% of youth created and updated their resumes

41% of the youth who participated in the SBNH programs throughout the year were residents of one of the three public housing developments in South Boston

School Age

66 youth hired in summer and afterschool jobs SBNH created its 1st Robotics Team

24 youth participated in Learn to Snowboard, Skateboard and Surf

Boston After School and Beyond Observer

Feedback:

“By far, the greatest strength of this program is the positive, supportive relationship between staff and youth It is so impressive to observe staff so actively engaging with youth in such an authentic way Staff members were respectful, kind, interested, enthusiastic, and supportive The program exudes warmth and caring Activities offered youth choice, opportunities to pursue their own interests and make decisions, and opportunities to work collaboratively in teams.”

Seniors/ ‘Club 55’ Program

299 Participants

SBNH intentionally works with our most vulnerable older adults and those living across three low-income family housing developments and several affordable senior housing buildings

We are focused on creating collaborative partnerships with organizations (SBCHC, Task Force(s), and private developers) to create spaces across the neighborhood for seniors to participate in programming and receive services to improve health and overall wellbeing
