Message From the President South Bay/Long Beach SHP members, First of all, thank you for being a CSHP member and choosing South Bay-Long Beach as your chapter. If I haven’t met you yet, then I am grateful for this opportunity to at least introduce myself through the newsletter before we meet in person. Being the president of SBLBSHP is a special honor to me because the South Bay-Long Beach area is not only where I currently live and work, but this is where I grew up. I immigrated here from Korea when I was 11, went to West High School in Torrance, interned at Torrance Memorial Medical Center during pharmacy school, then completed residency at VA Long Beach where I currently work as an ambulatory care pharmacist.

It seems like yesterday, when I was first installed to the SBLBSHP board in 2013 as a 4th year student in pharmacy school, not knowing where I will be in the following year – will I match to a residency program?

If I do, will I be able to stay in the area? If I don’t match, could I find a job nearby? Luckily, I matched at VA Long Beach, and I’ve been able to stay active with our chapter ever since. I have held various board positions in the past 5 years – communications chair, mentorship committee co-chair, secretary, and delegate as well as the New Practitioner Executive Committee member with CSHP. Now with such wide variety of experiences under my belt, I am excited to serve as your president.

My goal for this year is to make you feel at home with SBLBSHP. As your professional family, I first promise to continue to bring you valuable CE programs. We have a strong group of people on the clinical and educational affairs committees, led by Cindy Odegard, Angela Jeong, and Dan Bauman, who have already started working on multiple programs. There will be good food, great speakers, and even better company to make your time and membership worthwhile. So please come join us.

Secondly, I would like to bring you new events incorporating some of my personal passions: health & fitness and community service. As healthcare providers, we spend 40 or more hours per week caring for our patients but tend to neglect our own health. Maybe we can go for a hike or participate in a charity walk for our social event - something new and refreshing to get us to feel good together. As for community service, SBLBSHP has always been very involved, much thanks to our 2017 public relations co-chairs, Scott Harada and Jenny Wan, and student chapter liaisons. However, we can always do more to show that our chapter cares for the South Bay-Long Beach community. Maybe we can set up a scholarship for a high school student interested in becoming a pharmacist. Maybe we can offer brown bag sessions at local senior centers. This world needs more kindness, and we can do more together.

Lastly, I want to continue to enhance communication between you and the board. Our website and newsletters have undergone dramatic improvement over the past year, thanks to our webmaster - Tim Chou - and communications co-chairs Leslie Tanaka and Joanne Lin, but I want to engage you in a way that you crave the next notification on policy discussions, CEs, social events, and more. I am also here to listen. Our board may be planning events or making decisions that we think are best for everyone, but we could be wrong. I want to hear from all the members, what you’re interested in, to make you feel at home with our chapter.

Congratulations to the 2017 board for such a strong year, especially to our now immediate past-president, Matt Kamada; I have big shoes to fill. To the 2018 board, thank you in advance for your dedication and hard work. It will be a busy but fun year. To all SBLBSHP members, welcome home! I look forward to hearing from you and meeting you at future events.

Night with Industry

By Cindy La, Julie La, and Pauline Lam, Social Affairs Chairs The 38th Annual Night with Industry and Installation Banquet was a fun-filled and successful night with over 80 attendees and 13 vendors. The event was held at the fan-favorite Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo, California, which did not disappoint. Our theme this year was Western and our guests sure dressed to impress!

There were plenty of cowboy hats, flannels, and boots to spruce up the venue and keep the night fun and entertaining.

The event began with the Night With Industry which highlighted informative displays from our committed pharmaceutical vendors. Members enjoyed cocktails and delicious appetizers while engaging in stimulating conversations with the various pharmaceutical representatives. Members commented they enjoyed learning about the newest therapeutic options in a variety of disease states. A large number of our guests impressively completed our vendor crossword puzzle and were entered into a special raffle drawing. Our chapter would like to thank Grifols, Boehringer Ingelheim, PharmMEDium, AbbVie, QuVa, Sanofi, Incyte, Alexion, Takeda Oncology, Novartis Oncology, Sunovion, Nephron, and Tesaro for their support and participation in our program.

At the conclusion of the Night with Industry portion of the evening, guests made their way to our the Installation Banquet. Cindy La, Julie La, and Pauline Lam (Social Affairs Co-Chairs) collaborated to host the banquet and welcomed members as they enjoyed a delicious BBQ dinner. The chapter was especially honored and thankful that several distinguished guests attended the event including Dan Dong, CSHP President, and many past SBLBSHP Presidents. Our members and guests each shared inspiring words regarding the future of our ever-changing profession.

We were honored to have Dan Dong install the 2018 SBLBSHP Board. Immediatepast president, Matt Kamada, gave a great speech and reflected upon his many accomplishments during his term. Matt also introduced the new president, Angela Lee, who gave an empowering speech regarding the strengths of the chapter as well as the goals she aims to achieve during her presidency. Additionally, Sophie Cheng was recognized for her exemplary contribution as a student member and received our Student of the Year award. We also recognized the 2017 mentees for their commitment to the program as well as the 2017 mentors for volunteering their time and sharing their wisdom with their mentees. In addition to the wonderful speeches and presentations, the event was sprinkled with over 30 raffle prizes including our grand prize which was a one-year membership to CSHP. Lastly, thank you to all of our members and student volunteers who took the time to attend and facilitate our event. It was refreshing to see such great attendance from both USC and WesternU student pharmacists as well. It was a wonderful opportunity to network and also recognize our chapter’s many achievements this year. We are already looking forward to banquet next year!

Festive Board Meeting

By Matt Kamada, Immediate Past President At the close of each year, the South Bay / Long Beach Board of Directors takes a break from the traditional monthly board meeting to enjoy an offsite dinner. This year we had the pleasure of enjoying some finger-licking barbeque at Beachwood BBQ in downtown Long Beach. The restaurant manager Kirk was able to fit our party on the heated outdoor patio adjacent to a pleasant fire pit where we could enjoy ribs, beer, and conversation. It was a particularly big hit for our own chapter beer connoisseur and current Director, Dan Bauman, since Beachwood BBQ has several award-winning beers.

Personally, my favorite was called Street 3, Block 2, which is an American Pale Ale with a juicy, tropical, and piney taste. It was a nice break before the hustle and bustle of planning Night with Industry started. If you have any interest in joining our board of directors, please let us know – we’d love to have your help!

Mentorship Wrap Up

SBLBSHP has seen the highest number of mentorships this past year: a record of 25 USC School of Pharmacy students were paired with 18 mentors from the chapter! The mentorship program also organized its very first Mentor-Mentee Mixer at Five O’clock Wine Bar in Long Beach with much success, allowing for mentors and mentees to meet in person for the first time.

The mentorship program provides an opportunity for pharmacy professionals to contribute to the pharmacy community by cultivating relationships and helping shape students’ career trajectory.

Furthermore, it has been effective in recruiting and encouraging mentees to join the SBLBSHP board upon graduation: Tiffany Luong, a graduate of the 2017 mentorship program, has been installed to SBLBSHP’s 2018 mentorship program committee.

The success of this year’s mentorship program could only be possible with the time and support of volunteer mentors listed below. If you are interested in giving back to the future of pharmacy and volunteering your time as a mentor, please do not hesitate to contact 2018’s mentorship program committee (Helena Lau and Tiffany Luong) – for more information. The mentorship program committee is diligently planning this year’s program, including another Mentor-Mentee Mixer, to continue to provide an enriching experience for both mentors and mentees. Any feedback, questions, comments, or concerns would be greatly appreciated for improvement. Thank you!

ASHP Professional Development Award

By Sandy On, USC Pharmacy Student Every year, recognized ASHP student chapters across the nation are given the option to submit a project that has been done at their school’s chapter, to be highlighted at the ASHP Midyear Meeting. Of over 80 student chapters that submitted a professional development project, USC was one of few chosen to receive the 2017-2018 Outstanding Professional Development Award for its work with SBLBSHP and the Long Beach Rescue Mission. Projects were evaluated on Content & Information, Creativity & Resourcefulness, Service, Outreach & Impact, and Overall Impression.

This distinguished honor truly exemplifies the resourcefulness of SBLBSHP in reaching out and collaborating with their local student chapter to advance the pharmacy profession, in this case serving the Long Beach underserved community through education. At ASHP Midyear Meeting in Orlando FL, USC student Sandy On proudly presented this work through a poster presentation alongside a blue ribbon, highlighting this project for pharmacists and students to learn from. With this project being one of the only ones showcasing student and pharmacist collaboration, SBLBSHP continues to exemplify innovation and leading by example.

The project was recognized at the Pharmacy Student Forum Awards Ceremony and received with great feedback from others, inspiring student and affiliate chapters to collaborate with the idea of achieving a greater goal.

Public Relations Update

By Scott Harada, Public Relations Chair On January 5th, SBLBSHP had the pleasure of working with USC first year student pharmacists Christopher Limbo and John Dawod teaching the LBRM shelter about diet and exercise. Shelter members shared of their military background and asked plenty of questions anywhere from "Can I exercise too much?" to "How do I read the nutritional box?"

Preventative strategies remain the backbone of this program and this topic is certainly a foundation for improving our community's health and wellness. Our committee is currently looking for pharmacists with specialties in diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking cessation, or other health topics interested in providing a short interactive 30 minute presentation to the shelter. If you would like to nominate yourself or a colleague looking for a way to give back to the community, please do not hesitate to email me at haradarx@gmail.com. This opportunity is highly flexible and we look forward to getting our members engaged.

USC Chapter Updates pharmacists inspired over seventy-five students ranging from P1-P3’s to get more involved with the pharmacy profession.

By Kara Onouye and Sandy On Throughout the Fall Semester, SBLBSHP has provided students from the USC School of Pharmacy with an immense amount of support and mentorship throughout their active involvement with the USC chapter.

This year, USC hosted its Sixth Annual CSHP/CPhA Joint Professional Luncheon on October 19, 2017.

At this event, pharmacy students were provided with the opportunity to socialize with eight pharmacists who are actively involved in various local associations. In addition to Dr. Daniel Dong, CSHP President, we were fortunate to have Dr. Steve Thompson, CSHP President-Elect, and Dr. Daniel Kudryashov in attendance to represent the South Bay Long Beach Society of Health-System Pharmacists. On November 3, 2017, nearly two hundred pharmacy students devoted their Friday morning to USC’s Annual Legislative Day – an event made possible by the generous contribution from SBLBSHP. The purpose of this event was to educate pharmacy students about the importance of legislative advocacy and speaking up in support of our profession. Of the six total speakers and eight panelists, Dr. Daniel Kudryashov was among the panel pharmacists present, in addition to Dr. Steve Thompson, whose presence is always a delight.

Finally, our Annual “Meet the Directors” event, which highlights pharmacists from different career fields, was held on November 15, 2017. With a total of seventy guests and a pharmacist to student ratio of approximately 1:4, students were able to interface with professionals who hold highly respected positions in their career fields of interest.

KGI Chapter Updates

KGI hosted its very first Residency Roundtable on November 9, 2017. Over 10 pharmacy residency preceptors and pharmacy residents from Kaiser Permanente Fontana, Ontario, Riverside and Loma Linda University gathered for the event. This included Dr. Sophia Ho, Kaiser Permanente Fontana’s residency program director. The event provided a large networking ground for students who were planning to pursue a residency postpharmacy school. It was a great opportunity for students to seek guidance on the best way to navigate their own individual path to residency. The event was a success and KGI cannot express enough gratitude toward the guest speakers for sharing their experiences and time.

KGI also organized a drug take back day at Kaiser Permanente on October 28, 2017.

Students successfully collected over 67 boxes of expired or unwanted medications. KGI was extremely grateful to work so closely with Kaiser Permanente pharmacists and provide support in promoting safety and awareness to the community.

KGI-SSHP Upcoming Events 2nd Annual PharmCAMP • March 3 and March 10 (Saturday) • The pilot PharmCAMP program was designed to expose young students to STEMrelated careers through active and fun learning. The program familiarizes students with careers in pharmacy and other STEM fields and encourages and inspires students to pursue higher education. While STEM has been a buzzword for the past half decade, pharmacy continues to be a little known career field, especially among children.

Educational Dinners

The Southern CAL chapter members joined us at our November 11, 2017 promotional dinner on Immune Thrombocytopenia @ Il Fornaio in El Segundo. Erin Benekos, RN, NP-C spoke on Immune Thrombocytopenia: Symptoms, Etiology, and the Importance of Treatment in Adults and Children. The program was supported by Gabriella Oseguera of Novartis.

We hosted a cozy dinner sponsored by Theravance on December 6, 2017 in a private room at Delius Restaurant in Long Beach. Stefan Schneider, MD spoke on Vibativ, an antibiotic.

Our first 2018 promotional dinner will be on February 28 at 555 East American Steakhouse.

Speaker Scott Wirth, PharmD, BCOP will present on the first and only once-a-day oral PARP Inhibitor approved for use regardless of BRCA status. The evite should be in your email so please RSVP at your earliest convenience to ensure you have a seat for this talk.
