Dear SBES Community, It is truly inspiring looking back and reflecting over all that our students, parents, clergy, faculty, staff, Board of Trustees, and volunteers have accomplished during the 2017-18 school year. This marks the successful completion of our 47th year of mission and ministry to children 4 years old through 8th grade and their parents.

What an honor and privilege it is to serve alongside such a dedicated community who actively demonstrates their passion and tireless commitment to empowering each student to achieve academic and moral excellence in a faith-filled environment based on God’s Word.

While there is a lot of chaos and uncertainty in the world around us, we truly have much to be thankful to God for. He has showered all of us with His abundant blessings, grace, mercy, and protection. His promises and provision for His children of all ages are endless!

Wherever you are located, whether in close proximity, or in another country, please know that we are praying for you and thanking God for you. We rely upon your ongoing prayers and invite you to stay connected for the benefit of the children.

Preparing for the Future In 2015, we sought input from Board members, faculty, staff, parents, and students which shaped our 20162021 strategic plan. There are 8 initiatives as well as an intentional design in place by which these are being fulfilled annually to further the vision and mission of SBES.

The Board of Trustees has partnered with Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF) to guide us as our school and church community engages in a discernment phase to gain feedback and input from all of the school’s stakeholders towards the development of a long range master campus plan. Faculty, staff, parents, students, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, volunteers, church members, community partners, and donors will be invited this fall to participate in informational sharing sessions. Andrea Foster, Board Vice President and Discernment Committee Chair, along with Andrea Scott and Liz Chanfrau, Co-Communication sub-committee Chairs, will be sharing more about the upcoming sharing opportunities.

Annual Fund Overview Of all fundraising programs at St. Barnabas Episcopal School (SBES), the Annual Fund is the foundation. It helps maintain excellence in the academic programs for which our School is known. Annual Fund gifts are unrestricted and allocated towards the school year following the year they are received.

The Annual Fund bridges the “gap” between tuition income and the cost of operating SBES. This fund keeps tuition as affordable as possible and ensures that our programs continue to enrich the lives of our students. On the following page is a list of our generous donors for the 2017-18 school year. The next page will also give insight into the positive impact our donors’ gifts have on our School.

This year, our students were able to help raise over $23,000 through the Fun Run. This was the first year hosting a Fun “Glow” Run through Boosterhon, and it was a huge success. Not only were students taught about biblical stewardship, but the program also incorporated a fun character building lesson each day!

The St. Barnabas Episcopal School Legacy Club is a program that was started in 2016 to help provide a financially stable future for the School. Funds raised through this program are funneled into our Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF) investment account for the purpose of growth. On an annual basis, 3%-5% of funds are drawn on the growth of this account without ever touching the principal balance. In time the Legacy Club will prove to be a large endowed fund that will continually give back to our students. As a member of the SBES Legacy Club, you are committed to providing a quality and sustainable education for generations of students.

How do I Become a Member?

Planned Giving:

There are three ways you can become a member of the SBES Legacy Club: Long term pledges, Planned Giving, or Endowment Giving.

All members receive recognition on our Legacy Club banners in the Harwood Center, the opportunity to purchase a brick in designated sections of the school, and the assurance of leaving a legacy for future generations of students at SBES.

Including St. Barnabas Episcopal School in your will or living trust is a great way to show your devotion to providing quality education to our students and school.

Contact Kyle Hays, if you wish to be recognized as a Legacy Club member through adding SBES to your will.

Long Term Pledges: Committing to a gift of $250 or more for a 5-year minimum will grant you membership to our Legacy Club.

Endowment Giving: Establishing an endowment in the name of your family or a loved one can leave an enormous impact on our students. Though a minimum gift of $50,000 is required for a named endowment, some donors have pursued this path by splitting this amount out over the course of many years. Endowed funds not only give you recognition as a Legacy Club member, but also help our school create a long-term sustainable future for education and growth.

Alumni Spotlight

Laura Schwanebeck, Class of 2006 “I am so glad I went to St. Barnabas!” says former student, Laura Schwanebeck. “Every single teacher I had at St. Barnabas made learning fun and fostered my desire to learn.”

Schwanebeck graduated from SBES in 2006 after attending from fourth to eighth grade.

Laura notes that she has always had this passion for learning, and continues to love learning new things every day. In the past twelve years, she has certainly proven this to be true.

Laura attended DeLand High School, where she completed two years of International Baccalaureate classes and two years of early college courses. From there, she completed her undergraduate years at the University of South Florida; however, Laura knew she wanted to continue her schooling and obtain her doctorate in Physical Therapy. Schwanebeck was delighted to learn of her acceptance into the University of Florida’s Physical Therapy Program on her birthday, April 30, 2015. “It was the best birthday present I could have asked for!” she exclaimed. Laura graduated this May and just recently completed her board exams.

She is looking forward to getting her results back and pushing herself to grow in her field.

Already, Laura is considering obtaining a K9 Rehab Certification or a Certification in Sports Physical Therapy.

While Laura has spent the past several years studying extremely hard, she has also made time to have fun adventures with her four-legged friend Charly the Peekapoo.

She also spends time improving her own physical health by completing crossfit training. Schwanebeck is not only dedicated to achieving her academic best, but she also strives to achieve greatness with anything she is involved in.

Laura still fondly recalls the SBES “Meet Your Teacher” days. Now, she excitedly anticipates meeting her own clients in physical therapy. It is with pride that we recognize Dr. Laura Schwanebeck as she begins a career in the field of her passion.

Endowments What are Endowments?

Endowed funds established after the 2014-15 school year are placed in an investment account with the Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF). These funds are then invested and have a projected annual investment return of 7% or more. As the principal value of these funds grows, SBES is then able to disburse 3%-5% of these funds on an annual basis to support the school. This means the value of an endowment fund will never fall below its principal balance and is expected to increase by a minimum of 2% per year.

How do I set up an Endowment?

An endowment can be established by pledging a gift of $50,000 or greater to SBES. These funds can be pledged in a lump sum or broken out over a number of years. Endowments can be restricted; however, advisement from the Director of Development and Head of School is required. Our current endowments total over $153,000 and have a projected yearly giveback of $5,000 – $8,000 to the school.

SBES Endowment Funds:

Rebecca Whalen Scholarship Fund: In June of 2008, this endowment was established in loving memory of Becky Whalen.

Becky’s life epitomized the qualities of selfless giving, pride, and love. A scholarship is awarded in her memory to students who model these qualities. This endowment was established as a restricted scholarship fund that can be awarded to a maximum of 6 students annually.

Johnson Family Scholarship Fund: The Johnson Family Scholarship Fund was established during the 2015-16 school year. Upon its inception, the principal donors asked for this fund to be restricted for scholarships. A minimum of $2,500 in additional scholarship funds are planned to be disbursed during the 2018-19 school year.

Landon Birnie Endowment Fund: The Landon Birnie endowment is our newest endowed fund at SBES. When pledged to the school, the principal donor of this fund requested it be used for the school’s “greatest need” and has been restricted for campus capital improvements.

What's New at St. Barnabas?

PreK-K Playground During our FKC accreditation and after reviewing our VPK requirements, we discovered a need to create a “separate and distinct” play area for our PreK & Kindergarten classes. We are excited to announce the plans for this project (see rendering) have been approved, and we are expected to complete the new PK/K playground within the first month of school's starting! We would also like to thank our generous donors who made this happen: Hyatt & Cici Brown, Randy & Andrea Dye, and R.C. & Mimi Hill!

PK-4th Grade We updated all PreK, Kindergarten, 3rd, and 4thgrade flooring. We have completed our three-year plan to renovate and modernize our PreK through 4th-grade facilities.

Campus Safety & Security Council This past March a Campus Security Advisory Committee was formed with the purpose to research and recommend safety and security measures to the Rector and Head of School for the protection and well-being of our St. Barnabas Community and Campus. Assistant Head of School, Jeff Shaw, is the Committee Chair. The committee members are Patrick Sills (Campus Facilities Manager), Kim Martin (Teacher), Al Strub (Vestry), Morgan Gilreath (Vestry), David Brannon (Parent / Vol. Cty Sheriff’s Dept.), Pat Leahy (Parent / DeLand PD), RC Hill IV (Attorney), Dr. Carole Luby (Episcopal Counseling Center), Jim Mauney (Lake Helen PD & Consultant).

Parking Lot As you make your way back to campus this year, be sure to notice some of the campus improvements and upkeep our facilities team has been working on. One of our completed summer projects was resurfacing and repainting our parking lot!

Parent Advisory Council

Our Parent Advisory Council (PAC) assists St. Barnabas Episcopal School in effecting positive change for our students, teachers, and staff. All parents at SBES are members of PAC and consistently meet throughout the year to assist the school in fundraising, volunteering, and positively impacting our students. This year, PAC voted on and effectively ran multiple fundraising events, coordinated volunteers, and assisted in many other areas of the school. This organization is led by our PAC Board, which is a team of parents voted into their role by parents to coordinate and run our Parent Advisory Council.

PAC GALA Exceeds Goals!

This year, our Parent Advisory Council hosted its first ever “Building for the Future Gala,� and we could not be more pleased with the results. Over 220 people attended, and over $70,000 was raised to support SBES. This was by far the highest grossing event PAC has ever run, and it could not have been done without the support of our PAC Gala leadership. More importantly, the funds raised through the 2018 PAC Gala and other fundraising initiatives throughout the year gave SBES the ability to provide new flexible seating for 5th-8th Grade classrooms, a new IT Office, and partial funding towards a new sound system for our Harwood Center. Emmy's Faith Walk Rising 8th Grader

My name is Emmy Miles, and I am entering eighth grade. I’ve been attending St. Barnabas Church since I was born and St. Barnabas School since I was a four-year-old preschooler.

My faith walk truly started in second grade. This is when I began acolyting.

I served on the altar through the whole Sunday service and listened intently to each sermon. My young mind would process what it could of the sermons’ messages, but I developed a fear. My early faith was based solely on my fear of Hell. I was so afraid that I wasn’t good enough. Prayer and Bible study helped me realize that, through my faith, I could trust that Jesus loved me enough to help me. My fear changed to courage, knowing Jesus would always be with me. During my fourth grade year, I heard the story about God sending sickness to the Pharaoh and his people, and I was deeply troubled.

Why would I follow a God who hurt people? I was too young to wrap my mind around it. But soon I learned that God’s purpose is to be glorified.

Everything is done for the glory of Him. Pharaoh's people needed to learn that they would grow closer to God in the hardest times. By enduring the sickness, the Egyptians did learn to glorify God, and I did too.

My faith walk continued in fifth grade, as I simply doubted His existence. It was an important time to fully dive into my faith and forget my doubts.

The only solution to my problem was to believe, which is exactly what I did.

My faith really started to bloom from this revelation, but I still had questions.

My most recent struggle came at

the beginning of sixth grade.

Jesus tells many stories about how there is more rejoicing in heaven over one returned lost sheep than 100 sheep doing what they are supposed to do. Why is this the case? If I faithfully attend church each Sunday with the congregation-which is what I am supposed to do--why is this wrong?

Jesus’ stories also relate to my real school life. I watch some students consistently earn good grades and others consistently earn F’s. When a failing student uncharacteristically earned a good grade, the teacher praised him for it, but the passing student was never congratulated. What I discovered, connecting with Jesus’ story, is that the good student IS rewarded--with the special gift of peace. Eternal peace is received by obeying, and God honors obedience in the long run. I now understood the ‘Why?’ During my thirteen-year faith walk, through much questioning and praying, I have gained confidence and understanding.

My priest, my parents, my teachers, my youth pastor, my mentors, and my friends have all helped me with my faith journey, and I will count on them to continue to help me. God is good, all the time!

Cole's Faith Walk Alumni Class of 2018 The dictionary’s definition of faith is complete trust or confidence in someone or something and/or the strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

I have come to believe that faith is something that was given by God to give people a choice to believe in Him and receive eternal life. My belief in God started at St. Barnabas Episcopal School, but it really started to take hold of my life while on a mission trip in Honduras when I went with the St. Barnabas team.

The mission trip in Honduras was not just a great traveling experience, but was also a phenomenal personal and religious one. I learned and experienced many things and the trip changed my life including relationships that were made on a physical level on earth and spiritual one with God. It was a checkpoint in my faith as I saw and felt God’s hand at work.

The moment I got back from Honduras I decided to apply what I had learned and do my personal best in my actions according to what is in the Bible. I thank St. Barnabas Episcopal School and Church for the opportunity to have such a great and unique experience that has taught me how to live my life to the fullest as a Christian.

Welcome to our New President of the Board of Trustees Vinny Ricci is an enthusiastic member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, St. Barnabas Men’s Prayer Ministry, and Kairos Prison Ministries. A former Assistant Head of School and retired Director of Admission at The Rectory School, a K-9th grade boarding school in Connecticut, Vinny has had many years of administrative and classroom experience in independent education. He and his wife, Claudia, also a retired Rectory teacher, live in DeLand and have two daughters and four grandchildren. Vinny served as vice president and was a member of the Executive and the Development Committees during his first year as a board member. He is honored to be part of such a fine, faith-based school as St. Barnabas.

Thanks to our Outgoing President Pam Dean continuously and generously shared her gifts to further the vision and mission of our School. During her three-year term on the board, she spent a two-year term as president. In this role she led the way for the board to add to our mission statement by creating a vision statement: “To be the crown jewel for the sake of Jesus Christ in education through faith, virtue, and excellence.” This vision is the response to the question, “What is Christ calling us to be?” Pam’s leadership helped empower and develop our board into a “working board.” By doing so our trustees became more effective in using their gifts for the fiduciary, strategic, and generative future needs of SBES. She continues to serve on our board’s Finance Committee.

Servant Leadership Development 

Honduras Missions We are entering our 5th year of our companion relationships with the Honduran leaders and members of St. Michael’s the Archangel Episcopal Church and St. Mary’s Episcopal School.

For the past four years we have sent teams from our church and school to Honduras.

We are excited to share that the leaders and several members of our companion church will be traveling from southern Honduras (Ojo de Agua) to visit us this October. The leaders and 10th grade students of our companion school will be visiting St. Barnabas in late February 2019.

Nurturing Confidence & Joy 3rd-5th Grade Program: “Girls on the Run” This is a new 10-week program offered at SBES with lessons to encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age. They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences. Throughout the season, the girls will make new friends, build their confidence, and celebrate what makes them unique.

6th-8th Grade Program: “Heart & Sole” We believe adolescents bring a lot to the table. We also know that girls at this age often sort through conflicting messages about their worth, their abilities, and their value. Our middle school program helps girls develop skills needed to tune into their own truths and unleash their power to live confidently and joyfully. Heart & Sole creates a positive, structured space for middle school girls to learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy, strengthen connections, and develop life skills that will help them as they move through adolescence and beyond.
