This year we want to create pollinator-friendly gardens in our community and backyards. Teaching the community about the importance of honeybees, butterflies and wild pollinators that desperately need a place free of pesticide contaminators, and providing habitats that accommodate birds, butterflies, bees and all types of pollinators.

Our programs and workshops will show us how to develop pollinator-friendly habitats, free from pesticides, and give them a source of food, water and a sheltered place to lay their eggs.

The goal is to plant varieties of flowers that bloom at different times, so they have a source of food all year long.

We encourage you to spread the word of the good things happening when you are part of the Shrewsbury Garden Club.

Shrewsbury Garden Club Continuing Projects

Town gardens that have been developed and maintained by the Shrewsbury Garden Club

Allen House Herb Garden

The Herb Garden at the historic Allen House, which was designed, planted and dedicated by our club in 1974. For over forty years our club has maintained the garden by tending to it each spring, adding and/or replacing herbs as needed and continue to label the plants for all to enjoy. Over the summer, club members are scheduled weekly to care for the garden by way of deadheading spent flowers, weeding the garden beds and watering the garden when necessary. In the fall, we maintain the garden until “Tavernfest� to be held on October 11, 2019 a (Monmouth County Historical Association fundraiser), then we add compost to enrich the soil before putting the garden to bed for the winter.

Borough Hall Planters

The planters were replaced with much larger planters which will complement the exterior of the building. Our members designed the planters with perennials and seasonal accent plants. The planters were donated by Sunrise Senior Living of Shrewsbury in 2019.

Community Garden

The SGC joined the Shrewsbury Community Garden when it opened its gates for planting July 2012. The club renews its membership each season with the purchase of a 60 sq. foot plot that is redesigned each year with a combination of attractive floral displays and vegetables. In 2019 the garden showcased the bright colors of zinnias and cosmos, with pineapple sage, mint and scented geranium adding fragrance, and ornamental oregano and basil providing plenty of charm. The harvest of green and yellow wax beans and late season hot peppers are donated to Lunch Break, a local food pantry.

Eagle Garden

An eagle sculpture donated in 2014, by the family of Dorothy Blair Manson, the first female Mayor of Shrewsbury and mother of Shrewsbury Garden Club member Robin Blair. This garden is in front of the Shrewsbury Historical Society Building, where our monthly meetings are held.

Gazebo Garden - Butterfly Waystation

A new garden design, featuring plants to attract monarch butterflies, was developed Summer of 2019 for the plantings around the 9/11 Memorial Gazebo. We created a Monarch Waystation with signage explaining the benefit of planting specific plants for pollinators. Perennials chosen offer a colorful, attractive and appropriate habitat for monarchs and, as an added bonus, will brighten the gazebo sitting area, making a welcome pathway garden for all who pass from the Borough Municipal Complex to the Community Garden. This garden is registered and certification received from Monarch Watch and can be tracked on their website as the SGC garden named Gazebo Garden for Monarch Butterflies.

Greenhouse Garden

This garden, located at the entrance to Manson Park was once a greenhouse for the Wardell Estate. In 2008, the walled garden was designed and planted with David Austin roses, clematis and other fragrant flowers. The snowdrops and crab apple tree that were planted will give four season interest.

HERITAGE ROSE GARDEN - CHRIST CHURCH

Conceived in Winter 2014, Christ Church historian Robert Kelly, our own Heritage Rose Garden was inspired by eminent horticulturist Stephen Scanniello, curator of the New York Botanical Garden’s famed Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden and President of the worldwide Heritage Rose Society. Sponsored by the Church Elders, Mr. Kelly recruited a volunteer corps of “Edith’s Angels” from local Shrewsbury Garden Club members, dedicating Christ Church lovely rose bouquet in October 2015. Volunteers continue to nurture the memorial’s classic collection.

As recorded in the U.S. National Garden Club’s Historical Preservation of Memorial Church Gardens, on behalf of the Shrewsbury Garden Club, Heritage Garden received the coveted May Duff Walters Achievement Award for Preservation in 2017.

9/11 Memorial Gazebo

Located near Shrewsbury Borough Hall, the Memorial Gazebo was Dedicated in 2004. The Gazebo is surrounded by memorial benches, pavers and the newly created Monarch Butterfly Waystation in May 2019. and maintained by club members. Many town festivities are held here. For the 9/11 Anniversary an arrangement is placed near the memorial statue. In the winter, together with Shrewsbury Borough School committee, we add greenery and lights for the Holiday Season.

Operation Sleigh Bells

A Family and Children Services signature program, started in 1909 by Long Branch community leaders, using their personal resources to buy toys for impoverished children. Our annual giving back to those in need project.

Preservation of the Shrewsbury Garden Club Records

In 2018 a 60th Anniversary booklet was printed to represent the history of the club. The club will continue to archive the club’s records (minutes, agendas, photographs, yearbooks and original documents). Copies available for sale.

Shrewsbury Historical Society - A Place for Pollinators

The garden club holds their monthly meetings at the SHS. In appreciation for the use of their building, the club maintains the garden beds surrounding the building and the two urns that stand on high pedestal bases at the entry to the Shrewsbury Historical Society building with decorative arrangements that change throughout the year to accentuate the changing seasons. The planters are filled with purchased annuals most of the year and refreshed with cut greens from our own yards for the winter. Club members designed, funded and with the help of an Eagle Scout project, installed a new garden along the building’s front in 2006.

The garden beds are in the process of being redesigned to include and feature plants for pollinators. Long-established anchor plants will remain and serve as the backdrop for new perennials. Chosen for their importance to insect pollinators, the new plants will add another educational component to our garden endeavors. Plant labels and signage describing the mission will be included in the second phase of the project.

Shrewsbury Garden Club New Projects 2019-2020

Butterfly Catch and Release

SGC member Julie Brain raises the Monarch Butterflies from the egg and will show the children of the community how to look for the eggs of the caterpillars on the milkweed, how to pick the leaves of the milkweed, put it in a container, and explain the next several steps so they too can release a butterfly one day. SGC will release, throughout the season, monarch butterflies into our waystation as long as mother nature cooperates.

Butterfly Waystation - 9/11 Memorial Gazebo

Phase 2 of our Waystation project from last year will be to have signs made to describe each of the plants surrounding the gazebo for the community to learn about pollinator plants in the way station and it’s importance to the butterfly.

Sunrise Senior Living of Shrewsbury will help with this project.

Germander Challenge

In 1974 the original germander hedge was done by cuttings. We plan on a horticulture challenge and all the members will participate. Sue Berdahl and Terry Blake will show us how to propagate from cutting and seeds. Each member will go home with seeds and a planted cutting. In March we plan on A March Madness Germander Planting at the Allen House Herb Garden.

New Projects 2019-2020 continued

Horticulture Challenge

Fred Karl, the Dahlia Llama delivered dahlia tubers to us in June 2019, just in time for planting in our gardens. Dahlias bloom from late summer to frost, so they would be ready for exhibit at our September 2019 meeting. Club members will be asked to bring in a cut stem to exhibit and we will award a gift to Best in Show! A great way to begin a new club year!

Raised Garden Beds at Sunrise Senior Living

SGC will assist the residents of Sunrise Senior Living of Shrewsbury with implementation of perennial plants and annual flowers in their raised beds for all to enjoy. We will teach them how to put the garden to bed in the Fall and how to prepare it in the Spring.

Smokey the Bear Poster Contest

In honor of Smokey the Bear’s 75th birthday, the SGC will invite the children of the community to participate in a National Garden Clubs, Inc. poster contest .

Wreaths Across America: GCNJ Special Project

The members of the club, instead of a holiday gift exchange, will be sponsoring wreaths to honor an American hero at a participating cemetery. What better way to ensure that the legacy of duty, service and sacrifice of a veteran is never forgotten.

WELCOME BACK GARDENERS! Pollinators and Propagation

The get together will be held at the picturesque Narrowgate Farm, home of Evelyn Bonanno, 440 Sycamore Avenue, Shrewsbury, hosted by SGC member, Steve Orgo. Please bring an appetizer or dessert. Please RSVP by 9/10 to Toni Fiorello, Hospitality Chair. We will start off by recognizing our members who have been with the club 30+ years. Nancy Stewart 50 yrs, Nancy Schmaltz 35 yrs, Michele Rankin 35 yrs and Sue Berdahl 30 yrs. Congratulations! Then we will have a propagation program to refurbish the germander hedge of the Historic Allen House Herb Garden. In 1974 the original plantings were done by our club from cutting; we plan on duplicating this. Sue Berdahl and Terry Blake will show us how to propagate from cuttings and seeds. Each member will go home with one and bring it back in March to plant in the Allen House Herb Garden. PLEASE bring 2 or 3 pollinator plants or perennials in a pot from your garden to share with other members or seed packets. When divorced from her husband, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, this powerful style-maker and lifelong fashionista focused her energies on her estate, Malmaison. Succulents are all the rage but did you know that there are succulents you can grow outdoors and are hardy in our zone 7! Learn all about these “easy care” perennial succulents, how to plant them and how to grow them successfully. You’ll also see many examples of how to design with these plants in your garden, providing inspiration for your next outdoor succulent project.

GARDENER’S MARKET Shrewsbury Garden Club Gardner’s Market will be held on Friday May 8, 2020 and Saturday, May 9, 2020 at the Shrewsbury Municipal Complex, 419 Sycamore Avenue, Shrewsbury.
