MUSIC NEW RELEASES Garbage - Not Your Kind of People The fifth studio album from the alt-rock ensemble Garbage, 2012's ‘Not Your Kind of People’ is the band's first release since 2005's ‘Bleed Like Me’. Previously, the band had gone on individual projects as drummer Butch Vig's production work - which nabbed him a Grammy for Green Day's 2009 album ‘21st Century Breakdown’ - and lead-singer Shirley Manson's own creative pursuits, including acting. In February of 2010, the band met up for some initial studio recordings in Los Angeles. Featuring over 15 new tracks, ‘Not Your Kind of People’ includes the lead-off single ‘I Hate Love’. Frontwoman Shirley Manson has said that the band's forthcoming album, 'Not Your Kind Of People', has been inspired by David Bowie, Siouxsie Sioux and Cocteau Twins.

Scissor Sisters: Magic Hour Scissor Sisters return with their fourth album 'Magic Hour'. "It's a sweet joyful mélange of beat-driven future-pop," says Jake Shears of 'Magic Hour'. "It style-hops all over the place unabashedly.Recorded in New York and London Magic Hour is the result of a series of team-ups between Scissor Sisters Shears, Babydaddy, Ana Matronic, Del Marquis and Randy Real - and a whole host of stellar artists, writers and producers, including Calvin Harris, Stuart Price, Pharrell Williams and the German electronic music producer and DJ behind BoysNoize. The Absence' reflects time spent in the deserts of Morocco, the tango bars of Buenos Aires, the beaches of Brazil and the streets of Lisbon. The 12 original songs encompass the sound and feel of all these exotic places and more.

Paloma Faith: Fall To Grace Paloma wrote and recorded Fall To Grace in London in 2011/2012. Paloma teamed up in the studio with producer Nellee Hooper, best known for his work with U2, Bjork, Massive Attack and Gwen Stefani. Talking about her 12-song collection, she said: "The new album has taken on a very cinematic mood. “I am very excited to introduce my new sound into the world. Working with Nellee Hooper has been really inspirational.” On Fall To Grace, Paloma has chosen to strip herself emotionally bare. “At the beginning I wanted to do something that was more of a performance, and I still have that element because it is part of me,” she explains, “but I feel like where I’ve been most successful is when I’ve just relaxed and been myself. Faith’s vocals offer bluesy power and reveal husky emotion.

AT THE CINEMA THE ANGELS’ SHARE

Raw emotions, an overwhelmingly realistic aesthetic, and a sharp script littered with accurate observations on society. There are certain things we've come to expect from the work of acclaimed Irish director Ken Loach, and his latest is no exception, albeit with a positive attitude. The Angel's Share opens on June 1st, and is the filmmaker's eleventh movie chosen for the Cannes Film Festival Official Selection (Britain's only entry). Written by Paul Laverty, who has penned all but one of Loach's features since Carla's Song in 1996 (including the Best Screenplay Cannes winner Sweet Sixteen), Rebecca O'Brien - another of the director's regular cohorts- produces, and John Henshaw is one of the players (The Wind That Shakes The Barley). So all the ingredients for another hard-hitting outing are here, but instead the film is more in line with the creator's

contemporary comedic output. Looking For Eric, the tale of a Manchester postman who finds psychological assistance in the form of an imagined Eric Cantona, was both charming and poignant, and arguably rates as one of the director's best movies, despite being atypical of his general style. Now this latest effort follows suit, and thankfully comes up equal, though not trumps. Another bitter sweet comedy then, the story centres on Robbie (24-year-old Scotsman and feature debutant Paul Brannigan), a classic ne'er-do-well. We see him sneak into a maternity ward to visit his noticeably young girlfriend and spend some time with their newborn son, at which point he vows not to let the as yet undamaged child go through the same experiences he did.

Then he almost breaks this promise immediately, as our Jack the Lad comes close to a prison sentence for actions prior to the film's real unfolding. Handed one last chance, and a community service order, he meets the d u b i o u s l y nicknamed Rhino, along with Mo and Albert. Striking up an immediate rapport he forms friendships with this band of similarly law-breaking types, and realises everyone's in the same situation. Jobs are hard to come by with a r e c o r d o f misdemeanours, and so it's unlikely they'll be able to find any decent work any time soon. Needless to say it would be unadvisable for anyone in this position to look to booze for a solution, but that's exactly what happens next.

The unlikely hero already has a penchant for malt whiskey, and spends a great deal of time educating himself on the finer points of a good blend. With the bruises impacted from his girlfriend's abusive father still smarting this predisposition for a wee dram forms the inspiration for a master plan that will hopefully see the not-exactlyprofessional crooks (considering how many times they've all been inside) pull of a heist, and profit from £500,000 of stolen Scotch. Needless to say what follows is an upbeat but deeply personal crime comedy that's more laugh out loud than Loach's previous football focused heart-warmer, but no less meaningful or uplifting, and perfect for summer.

BOOKS WAIT ‘TIL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME Mother's Day is always a doddle to sort out: flowers, some chocs and smother her with cuddles. With June comes Father's Day and suddenly we're all stumped. We've put together a selection of books where fathers figure. Some will make you laugh, whilst others will have you crying with pity or frustration. Why not pop one in the post and start up a conversation with the old man?

Man and Boy Tony Parsons Scout and Jem Finch have been raised by their lawyer father Atticus in the southern town of Maycomb during the Great Depression. Atticus has the respect of both his children and the local community until he decides to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. Incensed by injustice and racial inequality, Atticus takes on the whole town's prejudices and finally wins a place in everyone's hearts.

Boys Don’t Cry Malorie Blackman What happens when fatherhood is thrust upon you? Dante’s waiting for his A-level results but instead, finds his baby daughter on the doorstep. Her mother can’t cope and Dante’s forced to face up to his responsibilities. Battling with social preconceptions and the realisation that his plans have to change, this is a rare book that tells the story of teenage pregnancy from the father’s point of view.

To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee Scout and Jem Finch have been raised by their lawyer father Atticus in the southern town of Maycomb during the Great Depression. Atticus has the respect of both his children and the local community until he decides to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. Incensed by injustice and racial inequality, Atticus takes on the whole town’s prejudices and finally wins a place in everyone’s hearts.

TRAVEL BHUTAN CORFU HIGHLIGHTS

Corfu is the greenest of the Greek islands, festooned with vines and olive groves and tall cypress trees pointing straight up to the sky. Gentle shores in the east, mostly shingle, sheer cliffs but gorgeous sands in the west, lowlands in the south, mountains in the north, the scenery changes with every bend of the road. Framed by wooded hills on the west coast, Paleokastritsa is one of the most idyllic spots, all crystal clear waters and crescent-shaped bays meandering around cliffs and rocks. Pink villas peep through the trees like giant candyfloss, boats sail around the coast and into gaping caves, most exciting the ‘blue eye’ where shoals of fish swim in a luminous patch of blue water. Up on the headland, crowds head for the pocket-sized monastery, keen to set eyes on precious icons, light candles and enjoy panoramic views over land and sea. In the distance, meadows spread across the slopes, sprinkled with pink orchids and wild gladioli and isolated farms tucked in lemon groves. There are secluded coves, sweeping sands and quiet trails where rosemary and oregano leave their scent in the air.

Meanwhile on the east coast, Kerkyra, the capital, stretches across a peninsula guarded by two Venetian forts. The ‘Old Fortress’ is the most spectacular with ramparts and moat, courtyards, canons, museum and a lighthouse with dizzying views. Mainland Greece is just across the water and in the distance you can see Mount Pantokrator, Corfu’s highest point, just short of 3000 feet. Down town, the main square is occupied by a cricket ground, complemented by an English bandstand and the elegant Liston Arcade modelled on the Parisian rue de Rivoli. Bars and restaurants spread under the trees, horse-drawn carriages wait for custom and the Old Town beckons, a maze of paved lanes and stepped alleyways, tall buildings and spires jostling for space, hidden squares, souvenir stalls and balconies draped in laundry and flower pots. Cruise ships dock on the western pier, yachts bob at anchor while fishermen unload the early morning catch.

A short distance from the capital is the stylish Achilles Palace, not a ruin of ancient Greece, as one might expect, but a flamboyant 19th century building in neo-classical s t y l e , commissioned by A u s t r i a n Empress Sissi to nurse a broken heart. Achilles was her hero and painting and statues pay tribute among colonnades, stucco work and personal belongings of the empress and the next owner, Wilhelm II. But best of all is the fabulous panorama from the gardens, where you might feel just like the beautiful Sissi or James Bond, since the palace featured as a casino in ‘For Your Eyes only’. The Kanoni peninsula is just a stone’s throw away,

home to ‘Mon Repos’, an e l e g a n t mansion built by the British and later, s u m m e r residence of the Greek royalty and birthplace of Prince Philip. Everyone is welcome to explore the grounds and house now exhibiting centuries of the island’s history. Excavations around the estate have unveiled vestiges of Paleopolis, the ancient city of Kerkyra. But it is at the end of the peninsula that you find Corfu’s most iconic image. Set on a tiny islet, the Vlacherna monastery comes straight out of a fairy tale, flanked by a single cypress tree and the mere pencil line of a gleaming causeway.

TOP 10 TIPS FORNISSAN IMPROVING DUKEFUEL R ATEFFICIENCY GOODWOOD

I must admit if I had a nice long drive in front of my house, like Lord March, I wouldn’t get much work done. The temptation to hoon up and down and scare the milkman in anything with an engine would just be too great to resist. Unfortunately, I don’t have that problem, so an invite to apply some rubber to the Goodwood estate’s well wheel-trodden hill climb is always welcome. My invite came for the media day for Goodwood’s 2012 motoring events the Festival of Speed and the Revival. The day is a chance for Lord March to ramp up the excitement surrounding the two events and a good opportunity for the media to get behind the wheel of some new metal from the supporting manufacturers. Fortunately I was looking forward to one helluva ride. Nissan had offered a last minute spin up the hill in one of only two Juke Rs in the world. For those of you that aren’t in the know, this is basically the love child of a Juke / GT-R one night stand and the right genes made it across into the sibling.

and engine from the GT-R. The 3.8-litre, 485bhp twin turbo charged engine has been squeezed into the Juke’s bodywork, the four-wheel drive carried across and it has the performance to match. Foot to the floor and 60mph arrives in around three seconds. The mad project was conceived as a marketing exercise by Nissan GB’s former MD Paul Willcox who, when he took up his new post in Europe, gave it the green light. Costing £250,000 each, the pair were designed and built in the UK by RML one left-hand and one righthand drive. The latter is for exclusive use in the UK. So what’s it like to drive? Well, the 1.16-mile Lord March drive was never going to be long enough to get a real feel for this amazing car, but first impressions were staggering. The Juke R handles all that power remarkably well, transferring it into forward thrust with no drama, much like the bigger GT-R does. There was just enough time to savour the whoosh of the turbos on the start straight as the hay bales and trees quickly melted into a summery soup of colour.

ever get a production run model. The cost and build time would make it very difficult to justify - especially when a GT-R can be had for circa £70k. Still, as drives up garden paths go, this Nissan-powered excursion will be remembered as a very special one.

In front of the house, I managed five seconds-ish of full throttle madness and the Juke R’s turn of pace staggered 120mph was indicated on the digital readout (my passenger reliably informed me).

Flint wall safely passed without grazes, the final section of the run allowed a little more confidence. It was soon clear that although hand-built, the Juke R is a very competent and polished piece of kit. It reminds me of a Renault 5 GT Turbo - but turned all the way up to 11. It’s just a shame these two marketing models are all we’re ever likely to see. There’s very little chance we’ll

TECH GUIDE HERE COMES THE GRILLS We Britons love to barbecue: the slightest hint of sunshine has us rushing to the shed to bring out the barbie and burn things to cinders. Gadget firms haven’t been slow to notice and there are all kinds of gadgets that can amuse guests, chill drinks and even help with the cooking. Some of the most useful gadgets are the simplest. Frosty Ice Tankards (£5.95 each) are ideal for keeping beer cold on warm days: simply keep them in the freezer until it’s time for a can and they’ll keep it nice and frosty. Dedicated wine coolers will do the same for your Chenin Blanc. While your guests enjoy their drinks, you can give them something to look at too. Strings of while, blue or multicoloured LED lights cost around £20 for a wall’s worth, and as they’re solar powered there’s no need to run electrical cables or worry about the electricity bill. You’ll find an enormous range of solar lights from deck lights (£15 for four) and post lights (around £15 for ten) to lanterns (£9 for ten), coach lamps (£11 for two), colour changing table lights (£15 for one) and faintly horrible illuminated animals, fairies and insects. This being Britain, the evenings cool down quickly, so inevitably there are stacks of patio heaters to choose from, including wallmounted halogen heaters (around £180), free-standing electric patio heaters (from around £35) and freestanding gas ones (£99+). Or you could just buy a charcoal kettle barbecue and huddle around that when you’ve finished cooking. Did someone say cooking? Gadgets can help with that too. If you’re fed up with the taste of lighter fuel, persuade the cook to invest in a Chimney Starter (about £15) instead. Using nothing more than two sheets of newspaper, it makes lighting charcoal barbecues a doddle. A digital thermometer’ is a good idea too, as it can solve the “burnt outside, raw inside” problem that

can affect some barbecued food. Good ones from Weber cost around £15, while wireless ones (about £38) will alert you when your food has reached the right temperature. If you don’t have a barbecue and don’t fancy those horrible disposable ones, how about a flower pot? The HotPot BBQ (£99.99 from Firebox.com) looks like a terracotta pot but contains a stainless steel barbecue grill beneath the foliage. It’s not huge (37cm by 27cm) and best for small meals but it’s quite clever. If you’d prefer something more substantial, the Portable Notebook BBQ Grill (£24) folds up for easy storage but offers a decent 45x30cm cooking surface. Both barbecues are charcoal-fired, but if you’d rather have a portable gas barbecue then celebrity chef Marco Pierre White has the MarcO-Grill 1000, which looks good, won’t damage surfaces and costs around £99. Some BBQ gadgets are a bit less serious. If you fancy making the famous Beer Can Chicken, where half a can of beer bastes the chicken from the inside, then try a chrome Beer Can Chicken Roaster for around £10. The roaster keeps the chicken and can upright to prevent foamy disasters. You can brand meat cowboy-style with the BBQ Branding Iron (£14.00), while the Musketeer Sword Barbecue Fork is ideal for sausages and silly too, shaped like a sword and comes with a free mask to make the chef look like Zorro. It’s yours for around £15.

Crow Tavern - Make mine a pint please! The Crow Tavern is a well known traditional family run pub centrally located in Bishopbriggs which is steeped in history with a myriad of fascinating facts and where you can be sure of a warm welcome and an excellent place to enjoy a drink or a meal. The pub dates back to 1827, it was then just a small pub with three houses above and only had one turret, it was then refurbished in 1902 when the second turret was built as it stands today. A number of strange “ghostly” experiences have occurred in the pub over the years; water taps mysteriously turning on during the night and a strange figure was captured on a mobile phone one night as a customer took a picture of t h e b a r. The current f a m i l y owners have been running the pub for the last 12 years and are proud of the history that comes with the pub. The Crow remains traditionally decorated, is an open plan pub with a long bar and subdued lighting creating a welcoming ambience and the staff are equally warm and friendly A full bar menu is served Monday to Thursday from 12 noon till 4pm, Friday and Saturday 12 noon till 7pm and

Sunday 12.30 till 7pm, offering classic pub dishes such as beer battered fish & chips (made from premium Deuchars IPA ale), all day breakfasts and Sunday roasts, the menu is complete with snacks such as baked potatoes, burgers and sandwiches. The restaurant is child friendly where kids eat free so both parents a n d children c a n enjoy a relaxing and fun m e a l out. By night t h e Crow Tavern features live music and comedy nights. The last Thursday of every month is comedy night with the likes of Des McLean (TV & Radio presenter), Des Clarke (Comedian & Radio DJ), Father Ted star Michael Redmond, Actor & Limmy’s Show star Raymond Mearns and writer of “Only An Excuse”, Phil Differ to name a few of the previous acts. Every Friday and Saturday night from 7pm there is live entertainment. You can also book a table for dinner prior to the show to ensure you get one of the best seats in the house. Group bookings are also available for entertainment nights with minimum of 8 and maximum party of 24. The bar stocks a large and diverse selection of 30/40 malt whiskies from all the producing regions of Scotland to accommodate most preferences, tastes and of course pockets! They are also now serving Deuchars IPA cask ale. A fabulous cask beer with enormous drinkability which has a distinctively radiant, deliciously refreshing taste and is a multi award winning ale including CAMRA Supreme Champion Beer of Britain and World Champion Cask Ale in 2005.

The emphasis of The Crow Tavern is on fun and creating the perfect atmosphere whether it's just a normal Saturday night in town, a midweek 2AB lunch or bite to eat or even a crunch match for Scotland, the Crow Tavern has all (WITHIN APPLE OPTICIANS) you could wish for and of course, quality service. HEALTH TEENAGE DRINKING Binge drinking in teenagers is a serious problem in the UK. How can you help your teen become aware of the dangers? The good news is that the number of teenagers drinking underage is actually on the decline in the UK. The bad news is that those who are drinking are doing it more often - and to excess, such that it is a real problem. Binge drinking is usually defined as consuming four drinks in a row for women, or five in a row for men, at least once in the previous two weeks. We have one of the highest levels of teenage drinking in Europe, with the largest increase being seen among 14-year-olds. While it's not good for a 14-year-old to be drinking anywhere near this level, how much the alcohol affects them will also depend on their body size and shape, plus what stage of puberty they've reached. Tell-tale signs Look out for changes in behaviour that you think just aren't the 'norm' for your child. Are they finding it harder to concentrate on homework or are they sleeping a lot more during the day? Has their attitude changed towards you and do they resent any sort of questioning about how much they are drinking? Are they staying with friends more than before to try to hide from you what they are doing? Have you noticed symptoms of excessive drinking such as vomiting and shakiness?

hand, then talk to their school and consult your GP for advice on obtaining professional help. The effects We tend to think that drinking is less of an issue than drugs, but it leads to many problems. It can cause a lack of concentration, so your child may begin to fail in school. Your child could suffer from alcohol poisoning, which can be life threatening. It affects the body's involuntary reflexes, such as breathing and the gag reflex. It leads to drink driving and makes your teen less likely to practice safe sex as well as causing anti-social behaviour - your child will be doing things they wouldn't do under normal circumstances. The three leading causes of death for 15-24-year-olds are car accidents, murder and suicide - and alcohol is a leading factor in all three. In fact, more than 5,000 deaths every year of people under the age 21 are linked to underage drinking. So don't wait for the problem to get worse, start talking to your teen now.

Talking to your teen Your teen may be binge drinking because they think it will make them feel good - or look good in front of their friends, or they may be using it as a way to relieve stress, or to appear older than they are. Talk to your teen before the problem becomes too serious. Chatting in front of a TV programme where alcohol is featured is a good way to have a more relaxed conversation. Family meal times are a good way to open up discussion and they may talk more freely. Ask what they've learned about alcohol and drug issues at school. Remind them that they don't have to drink to excess to fit in. Children learn from example, so if your child regularly sees you drinking too much, they will see this as acceptable. If you think the problem is getting out of To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

INTERIORS MAKING AN ENTRANCE A hallway is like a handshake: the introduction to your home, creating a look and feel that should be both attractive and welcoming, as well as providing useful storage, explains Katherine Sorrell. Design and decorating Width is the crucial issue in hallways, and unless you’re prepared to do some substantial building work and remove a wall, you’re probably stuck with what you have. To increase the feeling of space in a narrow hallway, use pale colours and add large mirrors (ideal for checking your reflection just before you leave the house, too). Keep the space as clear as possible by adding only the most essential items of slender storage furniture, and using the full height of your walls rather than encroaching on floor space. If, on the other hand, you have a large and spacious hallway lucky you! Think of it as an extra living space and make the most of it by adding a sofa or chairs, bookcases or a writing desk. For plenty of inspirational ideas, see Hallways, Corridors and Staircases by Leslie Geddes-Brown, with fabulous photography by Christopher Drake (Ryland, Peters & Small, £25). Whatever the size of your hall, consider it as a linking room and make sure your choice of decorative schemes works well when doorways to other rooms are open. If you have chosen a pale colour scheme for the walls, woodwork could be slightly darker for interest. Halls that see a lot of wear and tear could be painted with an extra-tough paint, or clad with tongueand-groove panelling, tiles or hard-wearing wallpaper. Fabulous flooring Halls and stairs are high-traffic areas, so ensure that your flooring is non-slip, durable, resistant to dirt and simple to clean if you can mop it, so much the better. Stone, ceramic or quarry tiles, or colourful Victorian encaustic tiles, are all easy to care for, while solid wooden boards or parquet require only some regular polishing or waxing. Cheap wood laminates may not last too long in such a well-used space. Lino or vinyl can look impressive, too, especially when laid in patterns. Carpet, however, is more problematic as you’ll need to

Elegant, high quality wood laminate flooring enhances any hall, and looks fantastic in this luxuriously large space. Linnea oak tower flooring, around £33 per m2, Kährs (023 9245 3045, www.kahrs.co.uk)

choose a colour or pattern that won’t show the dirt and make sure that it is suitable for a hallway: an 80:20 twist classified for heavy domestic use is often the best. Cosy and bright Under-floor heating is ideal for narrow halls, but do check that it will be compatible with your flooring. On the other hand, if there’s room, you could opt for eyecatching radiators, perhaps a period-style cast-iron column or an eye-catching modern type. Hall lighting doesn’t need to be bright enough for reading, but it should be welcoming and lead the eye into your home: it could be an amazing chandelier (given high enough ceilings) or a series of recessed ceiling downlights. In a narrow hall, avoid wall lights they will just act as obstacles.

39

Storage Most people store a variety of things in their halls, from coats, scarves and hats to phone books, buggies or vacuum cleaners. The type of storage you choose is always best moulded around what you need to store, how much space it will take and how frequently you need to access it. The main choice is between built-in, hidden storage or open, display-type storage. The former is best when space is tight slender floor-to-ceiling cupboards with plain doors, (perhaps painted the same colour as the walls, or even mirrored to maximise light) ranked along one wall, will hold masses yet be hardly noticeable. On the other hand, you could make a statement with an eclectic selection of free-standing cupboards, sideboards, tables, benches, dressers, baskets, shelves and so on. If necessary, fit hooks or pulleys high up on walls to hold bikes, and perhaps a coat stand or row of pegs for everyday coats and bags. Umbrella stands and boot racks are ideal for spacious, country-style halls

Somewhere to keep post and keys is a good idea, too, whether a bowl and rack on a dresser or a small, wallmounted cupboard and set of hooks. If you have lots of books or delicate items to display, a shelf running the length of the hallway above head height can be extremely useful. For times when space is really hard to find, it is even possible to build storage.

GOLF TIP GET CONNECTED Take your posture as normal, but put the butt end of the club into your belly button. Grip down the shaft as if holding the club normally (both arms relatively straight). Then, turn back until the club shaft is parallel to the ground. You should be able to do this without the club coming out from your belly button. This gets your muscles used to working in tandem with each other while you rotate your body on the backswing. Try it and see how you get on being connected! ENVIRONMENT

SOLAR POWER - HOT IDEA OR HOT AIR

Although most people have good intentions when it comes to being ‘green’, any incentive that ties an environmental initiative with a way of saving money is much more likely to turn those intentions into action. With the April 2010 introduction of a government scheme called FITs, solar power is exactly that combination and has become very popular over the last year. If you are wondering if solar energy could be a good choice for you, here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions. What are the basic requirements for solar panels? The main requirement, rather obviously, is that the panels have maximum exposure to light. They are generally put on the roof because they won’t be blocked by objects, trees and other buildings. The roof should ideally be south facing and although it is possible to use a roof that’s between due east and south, or between due west and south, the further away from true south you are, the less output you are likely to achieve. Solar panels need light so less electricity will be generated on shorter winter days and although they will work on cloudy days, the performance will be reduced compared to a sunny day. Finally, although the north of the country naturally receives less sunshine than the south, they do have longer days in the summer. The north won’t be able to benefit quite as much as the south but it is still worthwhile. Can I cut my electricity bill to zero? Perhaps one of the prime misconceptions about solar energy is that you will no longer have an electricity bill. Unfortunately this is not true as you will not be generating energy when it is dark, yet are still likely to be using it with your television, computers and even the fridge and kettle. Most domestic installations have little or no capacity to store electricity.

What’s the government’s incentive scheme? The government’s Feed-in Tariff (FITs) scheme became available in the UK (except Northern Ireland) in April 2010. The scheme guarantees a minimum payment for all electricity generated (the generation tariff) whether you are using it for yourself or not. Then there’s an additional payment (export tariff) for the electricity exported to the National Grid. Tariffs are even index-linked so the income will hold its value for the entire life of your system. The total amount of electricity generated is measured by a meter in your property. But measuring the amount of electricity you are exporting to the grid is usually either not possible or not financially viable (for domestic installations) so in most cases it is assumed that you are exporting 50% of all electricity you generate and your payment will be based on that. How much can I save? The Energy Saving Trust gives the following example of potential cost savings of a typical domestic solar electricity system in Scotland with an installation size of 3kWp: £489 a year from the Generation Tariff, £35 a year from the Export Tariff, £76 a year reduction of current electricity bills - to give a total saving of around £600 per year. This is a great return on your investment (typically 8 12%) and certainly higher than most savings plans. Of course the one little caveat here is that you no longer have your capital sum to draw on if money is a bit tight. You will have increased the value of your property, but it is unlikely you will want to sell up just to tide you over a short term budget shortfall

It is recommended therefore that you make use of your electrical appliances during the day so you are using your own generated electricity rather than having to take power from the national grid which will be charged to your usual bill. For example you would use your washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher and possibly the oven in the daytime rather than the evening. To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

49

What about water heating? If your water is usually stored in a cylinder and is heated by either electricity or gas, you could also benefit from installing a second type of solar panel which heats water. Unlike electricity which is difficult to store, storing heat is much easier and it’s likely you already do this anyway so that you can always have hot water on demand. You will need some checks made on your home water heating arrangements to see if it would be suitable. Could I change my heating system over to solar? In theory yes, in practice no. The times when you need your heating are in the winter - less light, and at night, no light. If it’s a bright sunny day between May and September it’s unlikely that you will be running your heating. What are the costs? Like any property improvement it does depend on a number of factors. If you are installing panels on a two bedroom home, it’s going to be a lot less expensive than equipping a mansion. A bungalow, if suitable, may be a lower cost as the scaffolding requirement will be less. But a budget of between £4,000 and £14,000 will cover most standard domestic installations.

How do I choose who to do my installation for me? As with any other significant property work, choose a reputable company and preferably a local one. Ensure you have carried out some basic research on the technology before you invite a company to quote so that you can gauge if they are knowledgeable and that the potential returns aren’t being exaggerated. Ask for references from other customers in the area. Finally look for accreditations as recommended by Energy Saving Trust. For more information see www.energysavingtrust.org.uk

SPORT TOUR DE FRANCE 2012 Every July the Tour De France takes over the streets and towns of France, and the TV screens of the world. This legendary event has grown hugely in popularity since its inaugural run in 1903 and is now watched by an estimated two billion television viewers. The 99th Tour commences on 30th June 2012 from Liege and 3,479 gruelling kilometres later, it finishes on the Champs Élysées in Paris on 22nd July. In early 20th century France, anyone envisaging a near-2,500-km-long cycle race across the country would have been widely viewed as unhinged. But that didn’t stop Géo Lefèvre, a journalist with L’Auto magazine at the time, from proceeding with his inspired plan. His editor, Henri Desgrange, was bold enough to believe in the idea and to throw his backing behind the Tour de France. And so it was, that on 1 July 1903, sixty pioneers set out on their bicycles from Montgeron. After six mammoth stages (Nantes - Paris, 471 km), only 21 “routiers”, led by Maurice Garin, arrived at the end.Le Tour soon won over the sporting public and the roadside crowds swelled. The French people took to their hearts this unusual event which placed their towns, their countryside and, since 1910, even their mountains, in the spotlight. The Tour originally ran around the perimeter of France. Cycling was an endurance sport and the organisers realised the sales of L’Auto magazine they would achieve by creating supermen of their competitors. Night riding was dropped after the second Tour in 1904 after there had been persistent cheating because judges could not see riders. That reduced the daily and overall distance but the emphasis remained on endurance.

sometimes with unconnected days’ races linked by train, while still maintaining some sort of loop. The tour is split into stages, each stage being completed within a day. Stages can be flat, undulating or mountainous. Riders are judged by the time each has taken throughout the race, a ranking known as the general classification. There may be time deductions for finishing well in a daily stage or being first to pass an intermediate point. It is possible to win without winning a stage, as Greg LeMond did in 1990. Riders normally start together each day, with the first over the line winning, but some days are ridden against the clock by individuals or teams. The overall winner is usually a master of the mountains and of these time trials. Probably the most famous participant in the race is American Lance Armstrong. In 1996 Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer, a tumour that metastasized to his brain and lungs. His cancer treatments included brain and testicular surgery and extensive chemotherapy, and his prognosis was originally poor. Incredibly he went on to win the Tour de France each year from 1999 to 2005 and is the only person to win seven times, having broken the previous record of five wins.

A succession of doping scandals in the 1960s, culminating in the death of Tom Simpson in 1967, led the Union Cycliste Internationale to limit daily and overall distances and to impose rest days. It was then impossible to follow the frontiers, and the Tour increasingly zig-zagged across the country, To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

KITCHENS FOR LIVING

BRONZED GODDESS - THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO FAKING A TAN

A great tan is essential for summer. We all know however that spending hours soaking up the sun’s rays is a definite no-no. It’s no surprise then that more and more of us are opting for the safe option and getting a golden glow courtesy of one of the many ‘at home’ fake tanners that are on the market. It’s not always easy to achieve the results you’d hoped for though - most people have an ‘orange disaster’ tale to tell. That’s why we’ve compiled a definitive guide to fake tanning. It’s just in time to help you look beach-ready and gorgeous and it goes a long way to prove that with careful preparation, the right products and an hour of your time, you can successfully be transformed into a bronzed goddess. Step One - The Right Product If you’re new to self-tanning or have pale skin, it’s a good idea to start with a gradual tanning product. The result is fairly subtle which means it’s forgiving of beginners’ mistakes and it also allows you to achieve the depth of colour you want gradually. Step Two - Planning Consider where you will be applying your tan. The bathroom is the obvious choice, but not necessarily the best. Ideally you need a fair amount of space, a full length mirror and lots of natural light. Allow plenty of time and don’t be tempted to rush.

Step Three - Exfoliate The most important stage of the process is preparation. Your skin is the canvas on which the fake tan product will be applied and it needs to be as even and smooth as possible. Exfoliation is integral for establishing the right base. It’s best done the night before, as it allows the skin to settle overnight. If you’re going to wax your legs, then make sure you allow 24 hours between waxing and tanning to avoid dark dots that emerge as a result of the product building up in open follicles. Thoroughly removing dead skin cells will allow for an even base on which to apply the tan. Step Four - Moisturise Moisturising is essential. Be incredibly generous with your moisturiser and ensure that it’s fragrance and colour free, as some varieties can affect the result of the tan. Pay particular attention to troublesome areas. Knees, ankles, elbows and wrists are generally drier and will soak up the tanning product if not properly moisturized, resulting in a patchy finish.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

61

Step Five - Apply When applying the tan it’s a good idea to wear latex gloves. Work quickly but carefully, starting with your feet and methodically covering every inch of your skin evenly. Don’t forget to include your armpits, toes and backs of your ankles. Step Six - Don’t forget hands Once you have tanned your entire body, remove your gloves and thoroughly moisturise your hands, working the cream into nails, knuckles and wrists. Apply a dot of fake tan to the back of one hand and rub it against the other, working up past the wrists. Step Seven - Leave to dry Drying times vary from product to product - mousses tend to work faster than creams or lotions. Whichever you use, it’s imperative that you allow it to dry on the skin fully. Speed up the process with a cool blast of air from your hairdryer. When you do dress, choose loose fitting clothes and keep away from water for at least six hours.

GARDENING LAWNS A lawn is an essential part of most gardens, but how can you make sure yours looks good? Feeding a lawn is essential to ensure it looks lush and green. Feeding keeps the grasses growing vigorously enough to help keep out moss and weed growth. A poorly maintained and inadequately fed lawn is far more likely to be invaded by moss, weeds and is prone to disease. Choose a lawn fertilizer formulated for the specific needs of the grass at this time of year; nitrogen is often in short supply largely because it is so important in the formation of the grass and, as this is constantly being removed by mowing, it’s constantly necessary to replace it. There are also many other nutrients, in particular phosphorus, potassium and iron which help to promote and maintain top quality growth. The precise amount of fertilizer that your lawn requires is determined by many factors including soil type, frequency of irrigation or rainfall, frequency of mowing and whether clippings are left on the lawn. If your lawn has a weed problem and you’re happy using chemicals, it’s easiest to use a product containing both weed killers (usually two different ones to provide best overall control) and a fertilizer. Applying these together ensures rapid grass growth to fill in the gaps left by the dead weeds.

daisy grubber or even an old kitchen knife. A proprietary moss killer should take care of the moss, but follow the instructions carefully to ensure that the mosses have been thoroughly killed before you attempt to rake them out. If living moss is raked out the problem becomes worse. It’s worth remembering that once the moss is dead the lawn will look worse than when the moss was alive. Once you have raked the dead moss out, the overall effect is even worse all the bare patches may make you despair, but if you keep the lawn well fed or, if necessary over-seed the worst looking areas as well, it will soon green up. Regular mowing is essential. A lawn which is left for too long before the grass is cut will soon lose its good, green appearance and when it’s finally cut, you may well wonder if it will ever look right again. If cut frequently, so that only small amounts of grass are removed at any one time, it should grow dense and green. As a rule, you should try to remove up to 30% of the grass growth at a single mowing. During spring, once the weather starts to warm up, the frequency of

If you have time, there is a marginally better effect if you feed the lawn with the spring feed then wait a couple of weeks before applying the weed killer. Small infestations of weeds can be removed effectively by hand, using a To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

cut will be noticeably greater than in early spring. With the onset of summer the rate increases rapidly again. However, if the weather is dry and the lawn isn’t well watered, growth rate will be correspondingly slow. If the grass is to be well walked on or used as a playing surface then the cut should be kept to ¾-1 inch. If you want a really smart lawn for show that isn’t subjected to pounding feet, then keep the grass to ¼ inch or slightly longer, but remember that to achieve this during summer you will need to use the mower several times a week - another good reason for keeping a more low-key lawn!

What about mowers? The range seems to be ever increasing and the one you choose will probably be determined by cost as well as the job you want your machine to do. If you have a level, fairly high-quality lawn then a cylinder mower is best, as it tends to give a better quality cut. If the surface of your lawn is the slightest bit uneven then a rotary mower is a better choice as it will cope much better in ‘adverse’ situations and, in most cases the cut it gives is perfectly adequate. If you remove a fair amount of grass at each cut then the clippings should definitely be raked up immediately. However, if you cut the lawn regularly and produce only tiny clippings then, particularly during very dry weather, there may be some advantage to leaving them on the lawn where they can act like a mulch and help to conserve soil moisture.
