MUSIC NEW RELEASES

Paolo Nutini: Caustic Love The Scottish singer-songwriter is back and sounding better than ever. Paolo Nutini releases his eagerly anticipated new album 'Caustic Love' on April 14th. Produced by Paolo and Dani Castelar, the album features 12 sparkling new Nutini original songs that sound like no one else. First single 'Scream (Funk My Life Up)', already on the national airwaves, is just a taste of what is to follow on the album. Highlights include the epic 'Iron Sky', the r&b tease of 'One Day', the bluesy swagger of 'Let Me Down Easy’, the beauty of 'Better Man' and 'Fashion' featuring Janelle Monae. This album is definitely worth a listen.

Coldplay: Ghost Stories After nearly three years, alternative rock band Coldplay are gearing up to release their sixth studio album Ghost Stories on May 19th. Since the arrival of ‘Yellow’, Coldplay claimed a legion of fans worldwide and, with each successive album, the band has broken new grounds both artistically and commercially and Ghost Stories looks follow on suit. The sound track ‘Magic’, is a return to Coldplay's traditional form as lead singer Chris Martin lays down his famous tones with an easy going and typically romantic pop track, ‘Midnight’, the album's fifth track has their usual stadium histrionics for fluttering synths. This album will surely be a number 1 when it is released.

Elbow: The Take Off And Landing Of Everything Elbow 's new album is largely inspired by Brooklyn, in New York. The group's follow-up to ‘Build a Rocket Boys!’ is apparently as much about the trendiest borough in New York as it is about Manchester, the band's hometown. Garvey explained the title for the album. "It's to do with the fact that there have been so many life events. There are five members of the band – people have split up, got together, had children. It never stops, this stuff. Especially round the 40 mark... Everybody's feeling relief, with remorse, next to joy, next to loss." Accordingly, the title track was inspired by Primal Scream and Spiritualized. Can we still rely on the bearded kings of Greater Manchester to deliver in 2014? Thankfully the new tracks on this album are proof that Elbow are still providing music that's reassuringly tender and fabulous!

AT THE CINEMA THE STAG

The Stag focuses on the one last night (or in this case, weekend) of freedom that men do their best to enjoy before getting married. Only here the groom-to-be would actually prefer to be joining his betrothed on her hen do. So instead, he, his best man, and the brides brother embark on a rural rambling weekend. Further proof that Ireland can provide the most hilarious yet moving productions of the British Isles arrives on the big screen this month. A word of warning to fans of gloss, though despite first appearances, The Hangover this is not. Nevertheless, as the title suggests, The Stag does focus on the one last night for a man who has no intention of going on something as crude as a stag weekend, and is more interested in overseeing the flower-arranging at his upcoming nuptials. With his dislike of masculine stereotypes ensuring that there will be no strip joints, or vomiting in rubbish stewn city centre alleyways whilst wearing a supposedly witty, bespoke t-shirt. Instead David (Andrew Scott) and stag Fionnan (Hugh

O’Conor) lead a merry band of well-meaning chaps on a rural rambling weekend. Which should be relatively uneventful, if it weren’t for The Machine – an over bearing macho man (Peter McDonald) who has managed to get to the core of what a weekend with friends should, and always will, be about and as you can imagine catastrophes arise. Fionnan’s gay brother (Michael Legge) and older partner (Andrew Bennett) suffer largely in silence, but their unstereotyped relationship is one of the film’s definite trump cards allowing The Machine’s exhausting homophobic bluster to be revealed as precisely that. Location and mood mean the stag is a very different beast all together from The Hangover. From the perspective of a Brit, its more honest and less melodramatic and from the perspective of those beyond, chances are it will be seen as far more humble notion of what might happen when a group of guys are out of their comfort zone, longing for slippers and a cup of cocoa. Despite some flaws - we recommend.

IT’S EASY BEING GREEN

Get clued up this month ahead of Earth Day on the 22nd April. Kermit actually had it all wrong: with so many great books around to help us be more environmentally aware, it’s just a matter of making some simple changes, and finding the right books to help us along the way.

The Green Book by Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas M. Kostigen This book is packed with information about small efforts that can make a big difference. It has thought-provoking facts and figures for when you’re standing there cleaning your teeth with the tap running. There are celebrity hints and tips including pearls of wisdom from Robert Redford, Jennifer Aniston and Justin Timberlake to name but a few.

Last Chance to See… by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine Bestselling author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams has teamed up with zoologist Mark Carwardine for a round the world voyage in search of some of the planet’s most critically endangered species. On their journey they encounter some bizarre and astounding creatures that are perilously close to being wiped out altogether. Adams’ reactions are often those of someone coming face to face with an alien species.

An Inconvenient Truth: The Planetary Emergency of Global Warming and What We Can Do About It by Al Gore Former Vice President of the United States, Gore is an articulate and prolific ‘green’ campaigner who has long been on a mission to raise awareness of global warming. Gore writes in a succinct, passionate and compelling way about the need to halt climate change and react now, rather than thinking it’s something that’s happening at a glacial pace. He brings urgency and momentum to the debates, insisting that governments need to stop ignoring this most inconvenient of truths: that our planet is heating-up and we have a critical situation on our hands.

How Bad Are Bananas? : The Carbon Footprint of Everything by Mike Bernau-Lee We talk about our giant, trampling, carbon footprints, but exactly how bad is it to take a transatlantic flight, or use a plastic carrier bag, or buy bananas? This book takes us, step by step through around 100 everyday items and occurrences to show the impact our daily existence is having on the planet. It’s an entertaining, though sometimes disturbing read.

TRAVEL THE DECLINE OF STAYCATIONS

We might still be pinching the pennies as the failing economy struggles to revive but it seems holiday makers are fed up with economising on their holidays by staying at home and are looking to escape by jetting off abroad once again. With Spain and Greece providing popular.

on year boost in bookings of 60 per cent making it the nation's favourite destination in 2013. This was followed closely by Majorca and Costa Del Sol both of which have experienced a year on year increase of more than 90 per cent.

The past few years has seen many tighten our belts in light of the recession, but online travel agent On The Beach, says people are splashing out again to escape the economic gloom, as it has witnessed a massive increase in bookings overseas summer holidays.

Greece has also proved a popular getaway despite a difficult couple of years for the country, hoteliers in Greece have sliced prices by an average of 15 per cent in an attempt to help drive the country's economy; this coupled with the weak Euro has led to bookings soaring by 55 per cent, making 2013 the opportune year to enjoy the white beaches and crystal waters of the Greek Islands.

Desperate to escape the depressing economic situation, many of us have turned to British holiday favourite Spain which is still destination of choice for most holiday makers. With many of us - still on a tight budget, Spain and its neighbouring sun kissed islands are proving most popular for British holiday makers this summer as it's famous family-friendly resorts are great value for money. The most popular Spanish hot spot was the Canary Island, Tenerife which has topped the charts with a year

Those of us with a slightly bigger budget might consider a trip to the Pyramids as holidays to Egypt have also decreased in price by an average of 20 per cent compared to 2011, in an attempt to rival the Spanish hoteliers and attract the all-important British holiday maker. This has made the popular Red Sea resorts ever more desirable, resulting in a year on year bookings increase of more than 70 per cent in 2013.

MOTORS MOTOR STARS TOP 10 TIPS FOR DETROIT IMPROVING FUELSHOW EFFICIENCY

James Baggott reports on the big new car debuts breaking cover in Motor City It’s one of the most iconic car shows in the motoring calendar, and this year the stars were out in full force in Detroit. As the covers came off the cars in Motor City, we were treated to some key new model introductions and not just from the home American brands. The Europeans, Japanese and Koreans were all out in full force too with some stellar debuts of key cars for the UK market. Here’s our pick of the new models.

Toyota FT-1 This bonkers crazy concept was created by Toyota’s sandal wearing Californian design team - but don’t fear, it’s no hippy machine. The FT-1 stands for ‘Future Toyota’ and while it is said to be a spiritual successor to the iconic Supra and 2000GT it’s really designed to show the maker’s future design direction. There’s no word on what’s under the bonnet at present, but rumour has it it’s likely to be a traditional combustion engine with high output.

Mercedes C Class This is big news for one of the most competitive sectors in the UK market. Meet Mercedes’ new C Class, a car that’ll take the fight to its bitter rival, and better selling, BMW 3 Series. Merc has worked wonders in the cabin the quality is stunning and will make German rivals sit up and take notice. The manufacturer says this is their ‘most agile and efficient car ever’ and will be a ‘new benchmark’ in the segment. We’ll have to wait and see about that, but there’s little doubt they’ve got the looks spot on.

BMW M4 / M3 Nothing gets car fans excited quite like an M-badged BMW and Detroit had not one, but two of them. The M4 is the new name in the line-up, the coupe version of the performance car. There’s a new M3, now a saloon only, and both share a new six-cylinder turbo-charged unit for the first time. BMW says emissions and fuel economy are 25 per cent better, though, so don’t mourn the V8’s death for too long. The new 2 Series Coupe was shown off in Detroit too but it stole little of the limelight…

Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge If the Q50 is up-and-coming Infiniti’s answer to the 3 Series and C Class, then this is the AMG or M-badged rival. Draped in carbon fibre and drawing inspiration from the Red Bull F1 team hook-up, the Eau Rouge concept named after Spa’s all-or-nothing corner is believed to get a 500bhp powerplant if it ever gets the go-ahead. Porsche 911 Targa It’s a name synonymous with the 911 and has accounted for 13 per cent of all sales of the legendary model and now it’s back. The looks won’t appeal to everyone, but the crazy roof mechanism on the 911 Targa will make grown men weak at the knees. The rear glass dome hinges back for the roof panel to slot underneath in a beautiful fashion. We’re just not quite sure why you’d want one over a convertible.

with few details about powerplant or performance, but it does give Mini fans an idea what the next hot Mini will look like. Volvo XC Coupe The Swedish firm is on a bit of a roll with its concepts at the moment. This is the second of three design studies from the firm and, like the Concept Coupe we saw at Frankfurt last year, it’s an absolute stunner. The firm says it hints at the look of the much-anticipated replacement for the Xc90 - and that the production car will retain its seven-seat versatility that isn’t present on this concept.

VW Golf R If you thought the Golf GTI was good, wait until you see this! With a 296bhp turbo-charged engine, four-wheel drive and a 0-60mph time of less than five seconds it’s the fastest Golf on sale. Due in showrooms in the Spring it’s likely to cost a fraction under £30,000. Quad exhausts and new front and rear bumpers mark the R out. Audi Allroad Shooting Break Believe it or not, this is the strongest indication yet of what the next TT will look like. Don’t worry, it’s not going to be an estate (well, not yet anyway), but the design cues shown off on this concept will feature heavily on the next TT. The Shooting Break concept is powered by the firm’s e-tron hybrid transmission that boasts 650Nm of torque and 400bhp - easily enough to see it hit 60mph in 4.6 seconds! Mini John Cooper Works Concept With more vents than an office air-conditioning system and brushed aluminium bodywork, this Mini won’t be for everyone. It’s little more than a design study at present,

TECH GUIDE GARDEN DELIGHTS

How tech can take the grunt out of gardening It’s that time of year again: Spring has sprung and the grass has started to rise. While robot lawnmowers haven’t quite reached bargain basement prices just yet - a robo-mower such as Husquvarna’s Automower 305G has an RRP of £1,399, and even the cheapest online shops charge around £850 - technology can still help: firms such as Bosch, Greenworks and Mountfield all offer battery-powered lawnmowers that offer the convenience of cable-free mowing without the noise, smell and hassle of petrol engines. Prices range from just over £200 to around £500. What’s even easier than a cordless mower? That’s right: grass that you don’t have to mow in the first place. Hi-tech turf (www.hitechturf.co.uk) looks like grass and feels like grass, but it’s entirely artificial - and if you have terrible memories of plasticky, jaggy artificial turf you’ll be relieved to discover that this is a very different proposition. For around £29 per square metre (for HT Luxury) you can lay a lawn that looks just like the real thing without any of the work. If your budget’s a bit more limited then there are more affordable options including a budget artificial turf at £7.99 per square metre. Lawns aren’t the only places where technology can

make life easier. Battery power has reached the point where it’s good enough for seriously demanding garden tasks. Black & Decker will happily sell you batterypowered chainsaws, pruning saws and loppers. The batteries deliver plenty of oomph - the chainsaw will power through up to 150 3.5cm branches before it runs out of puff - but boffins have yet to invent a device that ensures we remember to charge the power tools before we actually need them. More modest gardening can benefit from gadgetry too. Hozelock’s auto-watering system sticks a timer onto your tap, turning it on and off at the times you program, and options range from a simple sprinkler to an entire micro-irrigation system. Some timers even have rain sensors that mean they won’t turn on the tap if the weather forecast turned out to be overly optimistic. Not all gardening gadgets need electricity to function. The iconic Leatherman multi-tool isn’t exactly cheap, but its products - and their many imitators - offer a huge range of tools in one handy gadget. For example the Leatherman Charge AL includes two kinds of pliers, a knife, a saw and a serrated knife, a wood and metal file, wire cutters and wire strippers.

If you find gardening is, literally, a pain, it’s worth taking a look at the range of gardening tools made by Radius Garden, whose slogan is “Garden more. Hurt less.” The odd-looking tools have been designed with ergonomic grips to make them more comfortable and less likely to aggravate repetitive strain injuries, and the range includes trowels, forks, transplanters, weeders and cultivators. Expect to pay around £9 for each individual tool or around £30 for a set of four. If taking the grunting out of gardening sounds like something you’d like to do, you might also want to consider a device such as Fiskar’s Weed Puller (currently £25), which is designed to remove weeds without using chemicals or wrecking your lower back: it’s a long L-shaped stick containing deep-reaching stainless steel claws that effortlessly grab weeds by the roots. It might not be an exciting robot mower but anything that helps with a hard day’s weeding sounds like a great gadget to us. FINANCE BUYING A NEW CAR

The average householder doesn’t usually have enough spare cash to enable them to walk into a car showroom and make an outright purchase. Yet as current figures are showing healthy growth in the new car sales market, it’s clear that the money is being raised one way or another. In fact over the last 12 months the number of vehicles obtained using a finance arrangement has risen by 27%, whereas the number bought outright was below 15%. Information from the Finance & Leasing Association puts this trend down to the post-recession realisation that we have to stick within our budgets and manage our cash flow. As the majority of finance deals come with fixed interest rates, new car owners know exactly what their monthly/weekly repayment costs will be for the lifetime of the arrangement. But there are many finance options available and many terms to understand and this can be pretty confusing for a prospective buyer. Not just monthly payments There is much to consider when looking into a finance plan, and a low monthly repayment alone is not enough information on which to base your decision. For example, many finance agreements have a mileage limitation, with penalties for going over this. Some manufacturers will charge more than others but the average pricing is between 5p and 20p for every mile you

exceed. You would probably be surprised at just how many miles you do so it’s important to be realistic you don’t want to find yourself in the position of avoiding using your vehicle for the last few months of your agreement, just to avoid the penalty. Contracts Bank loan: You can seek a loan agreement from your bank for the purchase of a vehicle, which will give you the sum outright. If you are successful then the car will be your own and it will be the bank you owe the money to. Your success in securing personal finance will depend on your credit rating, employment status and ability to prove you can repay the money. As with all loan agreements it is important to look for any small print, and to check you aren’t signing up for payment protection insurance (PPI) unless you want it. Hire Purchase (HP): You will usually have to put down a deposit and then you will the balance in instalments over 12 to 60 months. Because you are repaying the full value of the car, the monthly payments can be high, especially if your deposit was small. Although this sounds similar to a bank loan, the dealer will usually organise hire purchase for you which can make it less hassle. Be warned though that you will not own the car until the final payment, so the vehicle can be repossessed if you don’t keep up with the repayments.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

37

On the other hand, as this gives the finance company some security, it can be easier to get a hire purchase agreement than it is to get a bank loan. Personal Contract Purchase (PCP): This is a variation of hire purchase but rather than paying for the car in full, you agree to pay the difference between the sale price and the estimated value at the end of the agreement period. This will usually mean the monthly payments are lower. At the end of the agreement you have three choices: just hand the car back; trade-in using the residual value as a deposit on a new model or pay the final value in full (a ‘balloon’ payment) and keep the vehicle. You could of course look at taking out a bank loan to meet the balloon payment. Personal Leasing: Essentially you are just hiring the car for the duration of the agreement. The servicing and maintenance will be included (but not insurance). You will agree a limited mileage. At the end of the agreement, you hand the car back - it never belongs to you. Be aware though that as with any hire car, if you send the vehicle back with a scratch, a dent, or damaged upholstery, there are likely to be penalties to pay.

hire purchase or finance arrangement and those with poor credit may either be refused finance or will find themselves paying a higher interest rate. For example, on a car finance agreement with no deposit and a duration of 60 months with a car value of £5,000, someone with an Excellent Credit Rating will pay £5748.75; change the buyer to one with a Poor Credit Rating and they could pay up to £9248.75 for the same vehicle. Who to use When looking into where to obtain a finance agreement, using a company with a car showroom and brand name will give you more protection than a private person or an internet agency. In the former case the contract will be two sided whereas less scrupulous companies can apply fees, charges and new rules and regulations throughout the agreement and, as this will have been a private transaction, it is unlikely you will be able to do much about it. A new car is likely to be the second highest value purchase you ever make after your home, so take your time to ensure that you are getting value for money, both in the car itself and in the repayment method.

Credit rating Your credit rating will always be checked for any loan,

HOME THE LONG AND SHORT OF CURTAINS A well-designed set of curtains can complement your architecture, provide a starting point for an interior design scheme and, in general, give your room a sophisticated feel. But choosing curtains can be confusing. Katherine Sorrell explains all. Headings and hangings The way in which a curtain hangs is determined by its heading, often created by a tape which is sewn onto the back of the curtain and pulled to form gathers, pleats or a variety of other styles. Some headings are only suitable for certain weights of fabric and sizes of curtain. For a less formal look, however, there are plenty of alternatives. Tab-tops and tie-tops are often found on ready-made curtains, though they can be fiddly to draw. Curtains can also be hung from a deep hem which is simply slid over a pole, from large eyelets punched in the top, from clips (magnetic ones are easy to use) or even just from hooks.

brass, bamboo, acrylic or glass in various diameters (for various weights of curtain), and are usually circular in profile, though reeded and fluted styles are also available. Designed to be on show, they require a certain amount of clearance above and below to look right (if space is limited, a ceilingmounted track is probably a better option). To finish off the pole at either end, and also to prevent the curtains sliding off, there’s the option of a plain cap or a pair of finials. If you choose very distinctive finials, ensure that they co-ordinate with the overall style of window treatment and the decoration of the room. On narrow windows or dormers, portiere (or swing-arm) rods are an alternative to fixed poles, while for a modern effect you could use tension wire, fixed taut within the window opening. A more subtle effect can be achieved by using a track rather than a pole; this is usually a better option for bay windows too, as they can be bent around to fit. Tracks may be made from plastic (inexpensive) or metal (better-looking) and be mounted either on the wall or the ceiling above the window.

Poles, tracks, wires and rods The most straightforward way to hang curtains is from a pole, ideal for short, straight runs. Poles might be fixed or extending, made from wood, wrought iron, steel,

Window disguises Curtains will cover tracks but only, of course, when they’re closed. When open, if you can’t stand the look of a bare track, you’ll need either a pelmet or a valance, usually about one-sixth of the depth of the curtain and slightly wider than the track. Hung high above the window, they can also make it seem taller; the opposite if hung low.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

39

Pelmets, normally made from wood or medium density fibreboard, can either be painted or covered in a fabric to match or co-ordinate with your curtains. Opt either for a simple rectangle or a fancy shape that complements the architecture of the room. A valance is a set of ruffles made entirely from fabric and attached to a track, pelmet board or rail.

length of vintage embroidery or a lovely chintz quilt. The heavier the fabric, the better it will hold a fold, though very heavy fabrics will be too bulky for smaller windows. Very light fabrics will look floppy unless supported by a lining. Bear in mind, too, that a large window will require metres of weighty fabric; check that your track or pole can support it.

Length and width To let maximum light into the room, fit a pole or track that overhangs far enough each side to allow the curtains to be drawn right away from the window. Very full, thick curtains need more ‘stack back’ space than light, thin ones. If there is space on one side only, fit a single curtain. Floor-length curtains are more fashionable than sill-length these days, though shorter curtains can be practical when radiators or window seats are in the way, or in stairways or kitchens. In-between lengths can look odd, unless specifically designed to disguise awkward window proportions.

Lining Lining is recommended for all curtains except sheers, as it helps fabric hang neatly and protects it from fading, dirt and condensation. It is usually made from a tightly woven fabric (cotton or poly-cotton) that resists shrinkage and creasing, and is often white or cream, though coloured linings are also available.

Fabric Curtains can be made of practically any fabric, from cotton and linen to velvet, silk or wool. As well as the conventional fabrics, consider unusual ones such as tweed, fleece, mohair or denim, or perhaps a sari, a

Thermal linings are coated on one side to reflect heat back into the room, and can be almost as effective as double glazing when they are closed. Blackout lining has the same properties, but also blocks out light and, to a certain extent, noise. Inter-lining, as its name suggests, is sewn between the fabric and the lining to improve drape, body and heat retention. It’s worth knowing that linings can shrink at a different rate to curtains when washed, so either have them detachable or prepare to have the whole lot dry-cleaned.

The sessions also develop breathing control, coordination and stability of the body, changing muscle lengths, relaxing and re-balancing the body.” No matter what age, sex, size or shape Pilates classes can build up core strength, helping to avoid or recover from injury, improve posture, balance and gain a greater mind and body awareness. SC Pilates classes are performed in a group environment with class sizes kept small to ensure participants receive the attention they require. One to one sessions can also be arranged by appointment.

SC Pilates, founded in 2013 by Silvia Catani, offers Pilates classes in Bishopbriggs, Lenzie, Bearsden and Milngavie. This simple, yet effective exercise method can help participants develop a healthy self-image, through the development of better posture, proper coordination, breathing and improved flexibility. As a direct result of their weekly practice, Silvia's clients often experience improvements in confidence, selfesteem and self-awareness resulting in a new zest for life. Silvia Catani, owner of SC Pilates, said “Having been recommended to try Pilates to overcome back pain in 2008, I quickly fell in love with the health and wellbeing benefits experienced as a result of my weekly practice. I was so passionate about how Pilates had helped me, I wanted to share this with others, which prompted me to embark upon my studies as a Pilates instructor and subsequently change career to allow me to teach others this highly rewarding exercise method.” Karen from Milngavie commented: “Silvia's classes are enjoyable and relaxing. She explains everything brilliantly and ensures that everyone has the correct positioning which is so important with Pilates. My back problems are improving and I am so much more aware of my posture and stance, in general - Silvia has helped me to correct bad habits I have had for years!“ Silvia commented “High fitness levels or great suppleness are not a necessary prerequisite for Pilates. What is Myofascial Release? Myofascial Release (from myo, muscle, and fascia, band) is a unique approach to manual therapy pioneered by US physiotherapist John Barnes. At its simplest, MFR involves gentle stretching of tight, painful areas in the client's body using slow, sustained pressure or subtle traction. At its most profound, it reaches deep beneath these superficial restrictions to unwind the body's unconscious holding patterns which, though we may not know it, are often the root cause of our dis-ease. Fascia forms a continuous 3D web throughout the body, providing a framework of support for the skeleton, muscles, organs, nerves and blood vessels. Without fascia to hold us up we would collapse in a heap. A healthy fascial system is relaxed and resilient, acting as our body's shock absorber. After injury, however and injury can be both physical and emotional - our fascia begins to tighten and harden in the areas affected. Over time, as the body tries to compensate for these restrictions, it creates further imbalance and tension at sites ever more distant from that of the original trauma. Thus a problem which originated in the

knee/hip could eventually cause pain in the shoulder/neck, and vice versa. Research suggests that the body remembers everything that happens to it and stores that information in the fascial tissue. These subconscious memories of past experience may be associated with postural positions, actions or emotions. The body/mind is also capable of creating habits and bracing patterns to protect us from physical and/or emotional pain and discomfort. While these holding patterns are essential short-term coping mechanisms they can persist into the longer term, resulting in a new set of problems for the body. MFR practitioners seek out underlying patterns of fascial restriction and follow them to source. We do not treat by numbers. No two clients are identical, even if they present with apparently identical problems. Find the pain, yes - but look elsewhere for the cause. For more information on how MFR can help promote health and wellbeing, contact Jane Meek, MFR practitioner, on 07759 182236.

MYOFASCIAL R ELEASE

(J.F BARNES METHOD)

A unique hands-on approach to the relief of pain and tension in joints and muscles

FIND THE PAIN LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR THE CAUSE Myofascial release (MFR) uses gentle pressure and traction to unlock restrictions in the body’s fascial system or connective tissue. MFR tracks these restrictions to source, addressing the root cause of a problem rather than just the symptoms.

BEAUTY

KITCHENS FOR LIVING

FIGHT PREMATURE AGEING Ageing is unfortunately an inevitable process for us all, but if you take steps to protect your skin now, you’ll benefit in the future. Environmental factors play an enormous role in how well - or not - you age, so it’s really important to look at how your current lifestyle might affect your skin in the future. Those bad health and beauty habits you have now could be exposing you to longterm skin damage and accelerating the ageing process. But don’t worry, if you take notice of our tips, you’ll stay looking youthful for longer. Keep Your Skin Safe in the Sun The sun is one of the biggest factors in premature ageing, so you need to ensure that you properly protect against it. You’ll be well aware of the need for sunscreen when you’re lying on the beach, but you might not realise that you need to use it every day. That’s because skin-damaging UV rays are present even when the sun isn’t shining.

Apply sunscreen liberally to every part of your body that’s exposed to the sun. Don’t rely on SPF-enhanced make-up alone for your face, it’s likely that you don’t apply enough of the product to fully protect your skin. And remember the dangers of UV rays go far beyond wrinkled skin, over exposure puts you at risk of developing skin cancer.

If you can’t live without an all-year-round tan, then you’ll need to find an alternative to regular visits to the sunbed. Sunbeds are equally - if not more - damaging than the sun and they’ll leave your skin looking coarse, leathery and wrinkled.

Time to Quit Another lifestyle factor that you need to address for the sake of your skin - and your health - is smoking. It’s hard to quit, but if you want to curb or prevent the signs of premature aging then it’s a must.

And sun-lovers really must be aware of the damage to their skin, because it doesn’t end there. Squinting in the sun can, over time, cause crow’s-feet, so always wear sunglasses and ensure that they offer proper protection for your eyes or you may become more prone to cataracts in later life.

The free radicals in cigarette smoke break down collagen, slow the skin’s ability to heal and make it look sallow, dull and lifeless, because smoking inhibits the blood supply that keeps skin looking healthy. Wrinkles prematurely begin to form and you start to age quickly compared to your non-smoking friends.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

61

Even if you don’t smoke you are still at risk of these effects if you spend time in smoky atmospheres, so it’s best to steer clear of second-hand smoke altogether. Don’t Pull Your Face Your mum probably told you that if you pull your face that way it’ll stick that way… well she was right. Repetitive movements - like frowning and raising your eyebrows can encourage lines to form earlier than they should. It’s good to express yourself, but if you find yourself frequently pulling the same expression make a change now, or expect wrinkles in the future. Get into a Routine Start a skincare routine today. There’s no better time to start dedicating time in your day to your skin. Invest in a variety of skincare products to help you in your quest to stay looking youthful. Eye creams, moisturisers and exfoliators are essential. And don’t forget the value of living a healthy lifestyle. Eating a diet that’s rich in vitamins A, C and E (found in brightly coloured fruit and vegetables) and omega-3 fatty acids (from fish, nuts and seeds) will boost skin from the inside out.

GARDENING BRINGING UP BABIES

By Pipa Greenwood

A visit to any nursery or garden centre at this time of year will reveal a brilliant array of herbaceous perennials. True, right now they may not look particularly enticing as they usually show little growth and seem to be unbelievably small but just take a look at the illustration on the label and you will see that these small plants have great potential. At this stage, before they put on their fabulous foliage or flowers, herbaceous perennials, particularly those grown in relatively small pots (3in or 7.5cm) are fairly inexpensive, usually somewhere around the £1.50-£2.50 mark and great value. They’re packed full of potential and within a year or two will have formed really good sized plants. In order to make sure that newly planted herbaceous perennials not only survive but thrive, it’s essential that you give them that little bit of extra tender loving care. Small plants such as these are more likely to be prone to any weather extremes such as drought or waterlogging and even plants in larger pots should be well established. When you ease the plants out of their pots, if you see a really plentiful supply of roots that usually means you have purchased a good plant. Unlike woody plants such as shrubs and trees, a crammed in root system tends to mean that the plant has been growing well and is unlikely to lead to problems in the future. Check the plant labels to see the ultimate spread of the plant and then this will give you an idea of how far apart you should space them. For the best effect you generally want to grow several individuals of the same species and I suggest you choose an odd number, perhaps three, or five for a much larger garden, as this invariably makes a better display than if even numbers of plants are used. It may be tempting to plant too close and although this will provide a better looking display initially, over-crowded plants are less likely to become well established, will have to be moved in the near future and in the meantime will be more prone to numerous diseases including grey mould and powdery and downy mildews. t’s also essential to plant at the correct depth. With herbaceous perennials you need to make sure that you

place the plant in the ground to the same depth that it was in the container and although you may decide to mulch the soil afterwards, do remember not to mulch right up to or over the crown of the plant, as this is likely to lead to poor growth and maybe even dieback. Weed control is essential and you can either hoe regularly between the plants to prevent the weeds causing competition or you can use a deep mulch or perhaps even place squares of landscape fabric or black polythene around each plant. Do remember however, that if you use polythene, rain will not be able to penetrate through it and so the plants are more likely to suffer from drought.

With landscape fabric this is not a problem. I’m a great fan of copper-impregnated and coated fabrics as these help to keep weeds and slugs and snails at bay. Once you have dug over the whole bed, then it’s well worthwhile adding a general fertilizer at the rate suggested on the packet; this will help to start the plant off well. If you notice that the soil is on the heavy side and unless you have chosen plants which are only likely to thrive under these conditions, it would be advisable to attempt to improve the soil conditions by

incorporating plenty of bulky organic matter and grit. Similarly, if the soil is excessively dry, then you could try to improve its texture by incorporating large quantities of any good bulky organic matter. Once the plants are in position, firm the soil thoroughly and do take care not to compact it if it’s on the heavy side. Regular watering is essential and if the ground is not already quite moist, you should water the plants in well. Although they should have been in good condition when you purchased them, do check them regularly for signs of any pests or diseases as it will be much easier to stop something in its tracks if you start to take action early on in the season.

HEALTH CHOCOLATE & EGGS - SUPERHEROES OR ARCH-VILLAINS? At Easter, eggs are everywhere - both the decorated hardboiled variety and the tempting chocolatey type. But what’s the latest advice about eating eggs and chocolate? Do they harm or heal? Eggs Once considered a nutritional Big Bad Wolf, a better understanding of how our body uses food means eggs are now seen as an important nutritional source. Packed with goodness A medium egg is very low in carbohydrates, supplies over 10% of our daily protein needs and contains just 66 kcals and 4.6g of fat (less than a third is saturated). It also supplies many essential vitamins and minerals, including 3 often scarce in UK diets: it provides a third of our daily Vitamin D requirement (vital for bones, teeth and muscles), over half of our required Vitamin B12 (for red blood cell formation, energy metabolism and healthy immune and nervous systems), and nearly half of our selenium requirement. Around 20% of us have inadequate Vitamin D levels, and as eggs also contain useful amounts of Vitamin A, Vitamin B2, folate, biotin, iodine and phosphorous, it’s not surprising that they’re increasingly recommended as a healthy and fulfilling food. What about cholesterol? And salmonella? At one time eggs were supposedly rather bad for us and we were given a weekly ‘safe’ limit. The concerns stemmed from misunderstandings about cholesterol, the ‘baddie’ that furred up our blood vessels. But research shows that cholesterol found in eggs and other foods has a negligible effect on our cholesterol level, which is influenced by many factors. Our body produces its own cholesterol, and although saturated fat has long considered the chief culprit in raising our blood cholesterol level, a fresh look at the evidence has recently cast doubt on this. As for salmonella - while the Food Standards Agency is recommending, for now, that vulnerable groups should only eat hard-boiled eggs, the massive increase in chicken vaccination has more than halved yearly cases

of infection. Eggs with the Lion Mark are guaranteed to come from vaccinated chickens, and all of the 150,000 Lion Mark eggs tested during the last two years were salmonella free. Chocolate For years chocolate stood accused of causing acne, obesity, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and diabetes, to name just a few. But research has shown it’s not necessarily guilty, and may also have positive effects. Acne: There’s no scientific proof that chocolate causes acne. If there is a dietary link, studies suggests it’s foods with a high glycaemic load. Obesity & diabetes: Most chocolate is high in sugar and fat, so as with any other high-fat, high-sugar food, prolonged over-indulgence is likely to show on the scales. However, recent studies showed that chocolate can lower your insulin resistance (which could reduce your risk of developing diabetes) and leave you feeling full. In a trial on nearly 1,500 teens, those eating around 1.5 ounces of chocolate daily had less body fat than those eating 0.16 ounces, and also had more energy and higher activity levels. Scientists say 1.5 ounces a day may be beneficial for us: good news! The bad news? That’s about a square and a half. While there’s no need to avoid chocolate altogether if you’re diabetic, experts advise you to monitor your total carbohydrate intake.

Cardiovascular health, cholesterol levels and blood pressure: Many studies suggest that cocoa has beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, improving blood pressure, vascular function and blood flow. It appears to reduce platelet aggregation and adhesion, making arteries healthier and reducing clot risk. Chocolate with good levels of plant sterols and cocoa flavanols may lower cholesterol slightly, but only - you’ve guessed it - when eaten as part of a low fat diet. Stroke: A study involving 44,489 people concluded that chocolate eaters were 22% less likely to suffer a stroke and 46% less likely to die from one. Brain function: Another study has shown that chocolate can help preserve blood flow in the brain and prevent memory decline in older people. This could be an important factor in diseases such as Alzheimer's. Mood: Chocolate contains chemicals that can raise our serotonin levels and may also affect other receptors in

the brain that trigger feelings of well-being. Migraine: While chocolate contains come chemicals believed to be migraine triggers, recent data shows that cocoa contains compounds that would be beneficial in migraine treatment. There’s no need to avoid it unless you’re sure it’s a trigger. Osteoporosis: Now for the bad news. Chocolate may contribute to osteoporosis. One study of women aged 7085 found that daily chocolate consumers had lower bone density and strength, which may be due to oxalate content, as oxalate reduces calcium absorption. Proper comparison studies haven’t been done between white, milk and dark chocolate, but most beneficial effects come from the cocoa content, while the unwanted effects are from the fat and sugar. So choose high cocoa content and low sugar and fat varieties when you can, and view chocolate as something to be eaten in moderation as part of a healthy diet.
